Queen’sMessage by Meghan Murphy Hi everyone! I hope you are as excited as I am about spring and the beginning of our 2013 show season! Let me fill you in on my 2013 thus far. I had a fabulous time at the Annual MQHA Convention in January. I was able to catch up with so many of you, as well as meet several more of our great members! I really enjoyed visiting with everyone including Past AQHA President Mr. Ken Mumy and Mrs. Mary Ellen Mumy. Additionally, it was very special to take part in the year-end awards presentations. I know how hard each and every exhibitor has worked to achieve those awards and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your experience and witness your recognition. In February, I attended the MQHYA Winter Spectacular however, the show ended prematurely for my mother and I. Unfortunately my grandfather suddenly became very ill, which prompted my mother and I to leave East Lansing early Saturday morning. Sadly, one week later, my grandfather passed away, at 92 years old, in his home, surrounded by family. My mother and I express many thanks to the MQHA family for your support during this difficult time. In March, I attended the 30th annual Michigan Horse Expo in East Lansing. I had a great time meeting so many new people and promoting MQHA there. I met with many young children and underprivileged youth who had never seen a horse up close before. It was special to be able to introduce them to a horse for their first time. The children had opportunities to pet the horses and it was amazing to see how much joy was brought to them when they would lightly stroke the horses soft nose. I believe a horse is one of the best things for the soul and it was truly neat to see some of these youth connect with the horses they met. At the Horse Expo, I also had the opportunity to receive a roping lesson from the Michigan Roping Association. It was so much fun! Needless to say, I am an all around girl, and I think I just may have found an event I would like to take on next! Many photos and video were taken and I am sure you can find one or two on the MQHA Facebook page or Michigan Roping Association Facebook page. I am really excited to experience what the 2013 season brings. We have already kicked off the year with a successful February show and we have several shows this spring. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at one of the shows soon - Good Luck!
YouthSpotlight by Aubrey Videtich For this issue’s Youth Spotlight, I had the opportunity to interview one of my personal role models, MQHYA past president, Morgan McCarthy Warda. Although she showed leadline when she was little, Morgan did not really gain an interest in showing until she was twelve. The horse show bug was inevitable, of course, as she had grown up at shows with her mom, and eventually her trainer, Michelle McCarthy Warda. Morgan attended high school at Lapeer East, graduating in 2011. While in school, she juggled showing while being a varsity soccer player, equestrian team member, as well as a part of the symphony and marching band. Unlike many mothers and daughters, Morgan and Michelle are able to find the balance between trainer and mother, “Having my mom as a trainer has been a blessing. In both aspects she has my complete respect. With every win and every loss, there is no one else I would want by my side. It has brought us closer as mother and daughter, developed a friendship and one horse has continued to make both of our dreams come true.” The dynamic has definitely paid off in the arena. Morgan and Mea Major Mito a.k.a. Wilson have been finalists at the AQHYA Built Ford Tough World Show and most recently, finalists at the American Quarter Horse Congress in 15-18 showmanship and horsemanship. Her favorite youth memories have been made at these shows, “Competing at that level with other kids who have become my friends and knowing how hard each of us has worked to get there, was a very rewarding experience.” Going into her final year as a youth (2012), Morgan wanted to make the most of every ride and appreciate the journey she and Wilson have taken since her leadline days. As far as becoming an amateur in 2013, she isn’t worried, “I am looking forward to showing as an amateur as time permits. MQHA has presented me with opportunities and created memories that will stay with me forever. No matter where my life takes me, I will find time to show and continue supporting this wonderful association.” Currently, Morgan is attending the University of Michigan-Flint where she is a Biology/Pre-Dentistry major with aspirations of becoming an orthodontist. We wish Morgan the best of luck in her journey and look forward to seeing her around the MQHA shows. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

2 Step Up Western Pleasure Classes!
A totally new Western Pleasure class concept with new criteria. (see 2nd page)
APPROVED FOR MQHYA TEAM POINTS
Step Up Western Pleasure Entry Fee $0. Added money $100. These new classes are designed to expand the interest in Western Pleasure to include those horses and exhibitors that are not comfortable with today’s go slow requirements. We all know that many horses are truly nice movers if they can go a bit faster at the jog and especially the lope. Not every horse has the ability to be attractive at the pace currently required in Western Pleasure classes. The Step Up Western Pleasure will require that horses be shown at an extended pace in all three gaits. A PACE horse will be placed in each class to demonstrate approximate speeds that are acceptable. Even if a horse has the ability to go slow, he will be marked down if he is substantially slower or faster than the PACE horse. Judges will be briefed on the requirements and the intent of the new classes. All Around Awards (Champion Coolers) • Open • Youth • Novice Youth • Amateur • Novice Amateur • Select Amateur Entry Fees All AQHA Classes $10/judge Lead Line and Small Fry $5.00 Novice riders enter open classes (NO Charge) All Division Blanket Fee $175.00/Horse Office charge per horse $5/judge AQHA Charges per horse $5/judge Ribbons will be available through sixth place. Kathy Christensen with 2012 MQHA Queen, Meghan Murphy
It is my privilege to represent you, as a MQHA Board Member. I have been an MQHA member for many years and enjoy going to the shows with my horse, An Impulse of Guy. I work for Henry Schein as a Dental Field Consultant and I live in Caledonia, MI. I am the Chairperson for the MQHA Queen and work diligently to promote our association and our Queen! This year I will also Chair the Journal and Website committee. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the shows!
Charles Closser I am a professional horse trainer and a licensed and certified Farrier. I have been training horses for 40 years. I reside in Cedar Springs, MI with my wife Janet. I have been involved with the MQHA and AQHA for over 20 years. I am happy to be a part of the MQHA family and to be a board member. I am very interested in what each member has to say and want every member to know that what they think does matter. My goal as a member of the MQHA board is to continue to strive for excellence in communication and to work with the other board members to keep MQHA the leader in our industry.
Warren English
Hi, I'm 54 years old (gosh that sounds old), married for 30 years to my wife Laurie and have 4 children. I own insurance agencies in Michigan and Illinois, and have been a Certified Insurance Counselor for 20 years. This will be my 5th year on the board. I was the youth advisor for the first 3 years and now I am the finance committee chair. My wife and I started in horses when our daughter, Corinne was 7years old and have had horses ever since. We currently have 7 Quarter Horses, and 2 miniature horses at our farm in Sturgis, MI. My chief job at the farm is manure processing and I’m told that I’m pretty good at this! One thing I would like everyone to know is that as a finance committee member for the last 5 years, I have seen the way MQHA has been directed and can tell you that Michigan Quarter Horse Association is one of the strongest associations in the country, both financially and in member participation and I’m certainly proud to be a member! Remember you don't need a horse to participate in the horse shows. See ya at a show!!!
Taylor (Tenlen) Fabus
grew up in mid-Michigan and spent her youth years showing all-around events on the MQHA circuit. During her youth career she held many officer positions including President of MQHYA for 2 years. During a hiatus from the show ring, Taylor earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Animal Science at Michigan State University where she is now a faculty member. Taylor is married to Mitch and has a 2 year old daughter Caroline. Taylor purchased her current equine friend, Rivazi a.k.a. “Ozzie”, in 2009 and has since shown lightly on MQHA’s circuit. She’s excited for her new role on the MQHA board and looks forward to being an active participant! She feels that her involvement in MQHA and AQHA, as a youth, provided many leadership and educational opportunities and she would like to continue those great opportunities for other MQHA members. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

2013 MQHA BOARD OF DIRECTORS Pattie Hall
My greatest accomplishment is being a single mom to three wonderful adult sons. I live in the Adrian area with my two dogs; Aussie, a shepherd mix and Kizzy, a Jack Russell puppy. My mare Annie (Suddenly Sexy) and I ride and show with Troy and Jody Prime of Prime Quarters and we have a great time! I have been in love with horses all of my life and the Quarter Horse in particular since the 1970's when I was lucky enough to have a King Ranch Quarter Horse gelding named Brushee Reed. My horse obsession started at nine years old when I was allowed to ride the neighbor’s ponies in exchange for cleaning stalls. As I got older, my obsession grew and I found myself begging and borrowing horses wherever I could find them, working for YMCA Storer Camps in Michigan where they allowed me to spend all of my spare time in the barns, showing on the Hunter/Jumper circuit and now showing the Quarter Horse Circuit. My goal for being on the MQ board is to work to keep costs down for exhibitors and uphold the success of the organization.
Megan Hirschman
I have been an active MQHA member and exhibitor for over 12 years. I show in All-Around events at nearly every show throughout the year, and have experience supporting and working at Speed, Cutting, Roping and Rodeo events. As a current MQHA Board Member I have strived to keep the exhibitors needs in mind. As the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University, I have experience in both auditing and creating financial documentation, fundraising for a non-profit organization, and helping support recruiting and membership in the organization. I am honored and appreciate the opportunity to serve on the MQHA Board of Directors again this year. Good luck to all of the exhibitors in 2013!
Ted Meyer
I live in Cadillac, MI and I have been a MQ board member since 2006. My wife and I own and operate the Frosty Cup Family Restaurant in Cadillac. Our family has been showing Quarter Horses for about 15 years. I am active in our community, as well as the horse community. I am President of the Northern District Fair, located in Cadillac, and have been, for the last four years and previous to that was Vice President for five years. I am also President of NMQHA and Vice President of the Cadillac Area Livestock Committee. I enjoy being a MQ board member and look forward to the upcoming year.
Jacque Moody
I've been a member of the MQHA Board for 8 years during which time I've served three years as Chair of the Finance Committee; two years as Co-Chair with Jen Goss on the Harbor Classic; and for the last three years have chaired the Futurity/Great Lakes Show which has become my #1 project – I'd like to continue to develop that as Michigan’s premier show of the year. My family and I have shown horses as members of MQHA for over 35 years and we continue to enjoy the many friends we have made.
Monty Montgomery
I have been a member of the MQHA Board for six years. My committees are Year End Awards and the Easter Eggstravaganza. The most important thing I have learned doing these projects, is that it takes a village to run an organization like MQHA. It takes not only staff and board but members, not to mention a very supportive wife.
Tom Powers Horse trainer since 1960. MQ board member on and off for twenty years. Retired Navy and Airline pilot. Manage quarter horse shows and Futurities in Michigan for 33 years. Member of MQHA and NSBA Hall of Fame.
Chris Perniciaro
My wife Laura and I first met at an MQHA show, and we have been married for 14 years. We live in Leslie, MI where we breed and raise both Quarter Horses and Standardbreds. I have worked at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn for the past 20 years in their Tool & Die Division. This is my first year being on the MQHA Board. I have been selected to work on the futurity committee, as well as the Stallion Service Sale committee. I am looking forward to getting involved with both of these important committees. I truly believe that the breeder is one of the most important facets of this industry, and that our MQHA Breeder’s Futurity is one of the best futurities that the AQHA has to offer!
Jody Prime
I live in southeast MI with my husband Troy and sons Cade and Colt. We operate Prime Quarters LLC from our home farm, specializing in training young horses and giving lessons. Troy and I met through the Quarter Horse industry and as we married and began our own family, the horse world has naturally remained a strong common thread running throughout our life. This is my 2nd term as a MQHA board member. Throughout this term, I want to continue to help promote our breed in a positive light, educate the public on the mission of our association, foster good sportsmanship amidst healthy competition, and gather new members for our association. These are things I believe in. These are things that you can count on me to pour my energies into as a Board Member of MQHA. Jody with her son Code (pictured left). www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Morgan McCarthy Warda
2012 Past President
I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan. This is my first year as an amateur and I am very excited to serve on the board of directors in 2013. I have sat on the board for two years as the president of the Youth Association and served on the youth board for the past seven years. I look forward to working for the association that has done so much for me in the past. Thank you for this opportunity!
Nicole Brown Veldhoff
I have been elected to the MQHA board of directors for 2013, and I am very excited to be the Youth Advisor. I am looking forward to meeting many new youth as we are going to try and grow our youth membership. We are planning on a lot of new and exciting fundraisers that will help our World Show Team, NYATT team and also donations to various charities. This is my first year as a board member and I am looking forward to helping such a great association grow and reach goals we have set for MQHA and MQHYA. My husband and I just moved to a farm in Kalamazoo where we run NBV Performance Horses, we have many youth and amateur customers.
Debbie Wadds
I am looking forward to serving on the MQ Board in several areas at this time. I will be on the committee for the Harbor Classic show up in beautiful, Ludington, MI. The SSS is an area that I feel a lot of people truly don't understand. I would like to promote and help educate mare/stallion owners of all the benefits that MQ has to offer at this event. I am also on the MQHA Convention Banquet committee, and as a 20 year veteran of event planning, feel I will be able to add and help on this committee as well. My husband, Gordy and I have been married since September of 2010. We own & operate Gord Wadds Show Horses in Ovid, MI. We have the pleasure of doing what we love every single day. Gordy helps develop my horsemanship skills on a daily basis. Last year was my first time showing at Congress and as long as I know where he’s at in the seats, I don't have a worry in the world.
Karen Waite
I am serving as the MQHA Board President for 2013. I have been a member of AQHA and/or MQHA for roughly 30 years, since I got my first quarter horse at the age of 11. As a youth, I participated in 4-H, with the goal of showing on the MQHA circuit. Eventually, that dream (and many more) came true, with the purchase of AQHA/PHBA mare Dream of a Leaguer, from the Brower family and later, with the purchase of Pretty Much Zipped, a 2001 gelding. With these particular horses, I have shown at many AQHA and MQHA events, including the Congress and AQHA Regional Experience. The MQHA has done so much for me personally and professionally, and my objective as President is to build on the great work that has been done to showcase the great people and horses that are MQHA. www.MIQuarterHorse.com
Tiffany Weitzel
I have been involved with Michigan Quarter Horse for eight years. I am currently the Vice President and look forward to supporting our membership. My goal is to continue listening to ideas and constructive criticism from the members to shape our organization. Please feel free to call, email or Facebook me with any feedback you have. In the past I have served in many leadership rolls, but most recently as the director of the Homer Caring and Sharing food bank and before that the panhellenic council president at Albion college. I currently work as a grain buyer for The Anderson’s. MQHA Journal • April 2013 • 36
2013 MQHA BOARD OF DIRECTORS Kris Woroniecki
I have worked full time for MQHA since 2001. I am the youngest of four Thome girls that my parents raised on a small farm in Comstock Park. I have been involved with horses my entire life, starting out with spending every waking moment with my own horses and then graduating to working at horse farms with my sister. We rode training horses of every breed, started and fixed race horses, reprogrammed race horses for second careers and of course, showed on the MQHA circuit many years ago. I reentered the Quarter Horse world when I took a job with Tom Powers where I was involved in the inception of the Yearling Longe Line class and the birth of the Triple Challenge Futurities and the Triple Challenge Stallion Trust. My job evolved from this to managing horse shows for MQHA and then eventually to this job. Along the line, I traded in my horses for kids. I am married and we have four wonderful boys. Two of them live in Anchorage, AK, and are doing very well with their schooling and careers. One of our boys now lives locally, is married and is an airline pilot. The last one of our boys has just recently graduated from tech school with the Air Force and will be relocating soon to California. I am officially now an “empty nester” and working to adjust to my new role! My family is my life and away from my job, I spend as much time as I can at our little lake front home or on wonderful vacations with my husband. I have been blessed with a wonderful family who is incredibly supportive of this crazy life I have chosen to lead. I have a job that I enjoy that includes a horse show family that I cherish. I am also fortunate to have a very committed Board of Directors and wonderful people including Aschelle VanZandt, Andi Knapp, Pam DeGraaf, Cindy Couturier and Amy Hartwig to work with regularly.
2013 MQHYA BOARD OF DIRECTORS Michelle McDowell Youth President I am a Senior at Wayland Union High School. This year I was thrilled to be elected as President of the MQHYA. This is my third year showing with MQ, however last year was the first year I showed my mare MillionDollarDetails (aka Paris). 2012 was one of the most exciting years of my life, and the highlights included representing Michigan at the Youth World Show in HUS, Showmanship, and Equitation and at the Congress on the NYATT team in HUS. I was proud to place 9th, and our awesome team went on to place 9th overall in the competition! I also placed Top Ten in NY HUS, and was a finalist in Y HUS there. Paris and I are looking forward to working hard at our new goals in 2013. Additionally, I plan on attending Grand Valley State University in the fall, and hopefully ride on their equestrian team. Good luck to everyone, and I look forward to seeing what the youth can accomplish this year!

SHOW APPROVAL: Kris Woroniecki reported that there would be a show approval meeting in January. It will be a conference call. Since AQHA is so far behind, the meeting has been delayed until information could be firmed up to help guide the show committees through the process and help them understand the new rules and rule changes. NATIONAL DIRECTOR UPDATE:
NEW BUSINESS: Youth Advisor – Nicole Veldhoff has volunteered to be the Youth Advisor. Warren English stated that they would have to see the results of the election before putting her into the position. He also mentioned that there are several parents who are interested in being involved and will be delegated jobs to help the Youth Advisor. The Youth are working to reassemble the committee to be an active advisory board for the advisor. Financial – Warren English explained that the rule that goes into effect in 2013 states that a Year End Review does not need to be completed every year. He asked the Board their opinion about getting the review done. He explained that currently the MQHA finances are looked at by several people. The consensus on the Board was that they would like to continue to have the review done. BoardMinutes Sinko seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Warren English presented the financial statement for the period ending January 2013. The total assets of the Association as of January 31, 2013 are listed at $257,451.18; the total liabilities at $118,738.28, and the total members' equity is listed at $138,712.90. Kelly Chapman seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Warren explained that the profit and loss is showing a significant difference right now due mainly to the Stallion Service Sale. He is hoping to see an increase in income in that account. Budget numbers are entered. It is difficult to get a feel for anything until we get through February and see the results of the horse show and the tack sale. By all accounts, the first show of the year was well attended. TREASURER’S REPORT: Kris Woroniecki presented the accounts payable and receivable reports. The accounts were reviewed. Mary Robertson made a motion to accept the report and Taylor Fabus seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kris Woroniecki presented the check detail report showing all checks written for January 2013. After review, Warren English made a motion to accept the check detail report for January. Tiffany Weitzel seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. P R E S I D E N T ’ S R E P O R T: K a r e n Wa i t e s a i d congratulations to all on a fantastic February Show and Tack Sale, and a huge thank you to everyone who made it happen. It was a long weekend; however, it was also large and very successful. It is an excellent way to share the good people and horses of MQHA. Also, there has been good input on the Facebook group regarding some ways that we can streamline the schedule and other things. Karen realizes that not everyone loves Facebook or is even on it, but it gives us a great way to interact with our membership. On that same note, a reminder that Cindy Couturier has asked for a board photo and 200 word bio by March 15 from all of the Directors so the membership can put a face to a name. Finally, the Directors have received an Executive Director’s review that is due by March 1. Karen asked that it be completed and submitted to her so that the Board is able to conduct Kris’s annual review in April. New board members are not required to complete it. VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Tiffany Weitzel stated that the committee assignments have been sent to the Board. She thanked the Directors who were willing to try some other committees. She stated that if a Director is on a committee that just won't work, to let her know. She reminded everyone that they can help on any committee, they don't need to be assigned to it and she also reminded everyone that committee members do not need to be on the Board. OFFICE REPORT: Kris Woroniecki discussed some website training that the journal editor is willing to set up. There will be a small cost to the Association but it should allow the MQHA office to be able to access the website for minor posts. The Directors agreed that it would be a good opportunity for the office staff. Kris then read a thank you note from an exhibitor who attended their first MQHA Convention. The Directors were very happy to get the correspondence. Kris then went on to discuss state

qualifying for the AQHA Novice Championship show. A motion was made by Chris Baldwin to accept the state qualifying requirements for the AQHA Novice Championship show. Taylor Fabus seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. COMMITTEE REPORTS CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel reported that the revenue for the Convention was $6963 which included silent auction revenue of $1357. Expenses totaled $6873.77 which included the cost of the band. The final profit on the event was $89.23 so the event at least paid for itself. The band was very well received. The Committee is working on the 2014 Convention and they are considering a possible survey for the membership. EASTER SHOW: Kris Woroniecki stated that she spoke with Monty Montgomery. He has all of the class awards for the show purchased. He is working on the high point awards. The committee has the ring stewards hired but is in need of gate help and trail, hunter hack and western riding set up help. He has secured one sponsor for the event. The committee is planning on the pizza party and Sunday breakfast as they have done in the past. FINANCE: Warren English mentioned that he will be coming to the MQHA office in March to meet with the bookkeeper and get the financials in order for the tax season. A committee was set up during the last meeting to discuss the credit card fees. Megan Hirschman reminded the Board that MQHA paid almost $8000 in credit card fees in 2012 alone. As a side note, the Association is absorbing the cost of the increase in fees from AQHA for the show approval fees which could mean an additional $7000 - $8000 in fees for the 2013 show season. There have been years that the Association lost money or barely broke even, and with the addition of the show approval fees, it is necessary to recoup some of the lost revenue in credit card transaction fees. After considerable discussion, Taylor Fabus made a motion to institute a 3% convenience charge for the use of any Master Card, Visa or Discover card. Megan Hirschman seconded. Motion passed with none opposed. The Board agreed that this new fee would be effective April 1st. FUNDRAISING: Megan Hirschman stated that the Fundraising committee has two or three meetings per year. She proposed that the meetings should including the chairman for each of the shows. She will work to set up a meeting and will include an invitation to the Directors.
updated the rules and application for the Queen's contest, and they should be on the MQHA website. REGIONAL SHOW: Karen Waite explained that after extensive searching, the Region 4 Experience has been cancelled for 2013 due to lack of a facility. Ohio Expo grounds changed their State Fair dates. The committee met last week to discuss potential locations for 2014. YOUTH: Youth President, Michelle McDowell stated that at the February show, the youth did a soup fundraiser and made $524.50. The kids also signed up 11 new Youth members. They are going to hold a conference call next week to discuss their fundraising for the Easter show. Michelle mentioned that they have discussed numbering Easter eggs, selling the eggs and then when the egg is opened, there might be a prize. They also talked about getting paid for votes for someone to wear bunny suit at the show. The other idea discussed is a poker run based on class placings. During the February show, the Youth had a general open meeting and discussed the Letter of Intent. Revisions were made and sent out to the Youth for approval. Warren mentioned to be clear in the Letter of Intent, who will be doing the service hours as there have been problems with that in the past. Chris Baldwin made a motion to accept the Letter of Intent as it was submitted to the Youth, with the clarification on the expectations of who is actually expected to log the service hours. Taylor Fabus seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. NATIONAL DIRECTOR UPDATE: Chris Baldwin stated that the AQHA Convention will be held in mid March. She expects that both she and Kelly will have a lot to report after that. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: AQHA Affiliate agreement – Kelly Chapman made a motion to accept the annual AQHA Affiliate Agreement. Megan Hirschman seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Amateur Status complaint: An anonymous complaint regarding an amateur's status was received and discussed by the MQHA Board of Directors. The consensus was that any information received by MQHA that is not signed will not be pursued, no differently than the policy held by AQHA. The Directors also shared that amateur status is regulated by AQHA and any complaints with regard to amateur status would need to be sent to AQHA as MQHA has no ability to govern this issue. A motion to adjourn was made at 8:25 p.m. by unanimous consent without objection.
FUTURITY: Kris Woroniecki stated that the Futurity committee met on the Sunday during Convention. The showbill is set up. They will be holding the trainer sale again and the fundraising opportunities will remain the same as they were in 2012. The committee will meet again in midsummer.

Congratulations to the members of “Warda’s Wild West” who were the youth team champions. MQHYA would like to thank everyone who allowed us to have a fabulous year including our generous donors and sponsors, our supportive parents, all the new youth who joined us in 2012, and of course MQHA and the ladies in the office who helped us throughout the year.
