Somewhere in time's own space, there must be some sweet pastured place. Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow. Some paradise where horses go. For by the love that guides my pen, I know great horses live again. ~ Stanley Harrison www.MIQuarterHorse.com
MQHA Journal • January 2015 • 26
READING PEDIGREES By Charlene Strickland Green Grass Syndicated Features The horse you see or the foal you envision reflects generations of ancestors. Owners of those ancestors made decisions on mating horses, planning each generation. They selected animals by examining the successes of previous horsemen, as recorded in pedigrees. Each breed includes individuals that meet a standard of a breed registry. The registry-an association or a government agency-maintains the records in a studbook. To understand more about the effects of breeding decisions, learn how to read a horse's pedigree, and how to examine the ancestry beyond the names listed in the chart. Knowing bloodlines helps you predict a horse's suitability as a performer or breeder. Pedigree research can be a lifelong pursuit, involving the science of genetics. For starters, here's a three-step approach covering some popular registries, along with the European sport horses. TRACE THE CHART A pedigree chart portrays a horse's family tree. Charts are included in advertisements of horses for sale and stallions at stud, in sales catalogs, and farm brochures. When you research an individual horse, a certificate of registration (the "papers") establishes that animal's identity. The registry that issued the certificate verifies the accuracy of ancestry, citing stallions and mares recorded in studbooks. On the certificate, a chart may list four generations: sire and dam, the four grandparents, the 8 great-grandparents, and the 16 great-great-grandparents. Most pedigrees read from left to right, branching on the "top line" (the sire and his ancestors) and the "bottom line" (the dam and her ancestors). The certificate should cite registration number, birth date, color, markings, sex, breeder, and owner. Ancestors' names may include their registration numbers, breed (in a crossbred, which would be breeds other than the Thoroughbred, Arabian, and Trakehner), and color. A European sport horse may include the date of branding, www.MIQuarterHorse.com
proving acceptance by a representative of the studbook. On the certificate, you'll notice abbreviations for sexes and colors. For a Thoroughbred, c and f represent colt and filly. A German-bred horse would replace the colors of b (bay), ch (chestnut), and dkb/br (dark bay or brown) with b (braun), f (fuchs), and db (dunkelbraun). As you read the ancestors' names, you learn to recognize major sires and dams. Every established breed has certain famous bloodlines, which become prominent through the progeny's accomplishments. These names often indicate a well-bred foal. Learning the lines requires looking at lots of pedigrees, and identifying the names. For example, Quarter Horse names include Doc, Poco, Bar, Zip, Peppy, and Leo. Breeders may refer to some of these lines as "foundation-bred," implying dominant sires of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A few stallions that established the type as a recognized breed include Joe Bailey, King, and Peter McCue. Breeders in subsequent generations may build on a parent's name. The Quarter Horse names carry down through decades, incorporated into the names of generations of foals. Most registries limit the number of characters. Some European studbooks require that an individual be named with the first initial the same as the sire's (Hannoverian), or dam's (Trakehner). In others, such as France's Selle Francais, all horses born in a certain year use the same initial. Learn the jargon of pedigrees. A horse's second dam is his maternal grand-dam (the dam's mother). Sport horse breeders often refer to the sire of the dam; you'll see a horse listed as xx--xxx--xxxx (meaning xx by xxx out of a mare by xxxx). With a Thoroughbred, you'll hear the term, "broodmare sire." You may also encounter terms such as "own son" and "own daughter," which indicate a direct sire or dam. In tracing ancestry, pedigree researchers advise to study the closest generations. Peter Birdsall, DVM, specializes in tracing sport horses of Thoroughbred and warm-
Sample
blood breeding. He said, "I usually follow back to the fourth generation. All the genes don't come from the mother or father. You can get genes farther back than the parents'." (Here Birdsall refers to genes as inherited traits.) "The first three generations are the most important, to judge a horse by--such as a good broodmare sire. You'd like to see a daughter of his in a pedigree. It's important to see him at that area of the pedigree." LOOK AT THE GENOTYPE Starting with the pedigree, begin investigating the genealogy. Every horse's ancestry forms its genotype or the traits it inherited. Sire and dam contribute toward each foal, and the individual reflects parents, grandparents, and beyond. Susan Ewart, DVM, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University. She said, "Having a basic understanding of the contributions of both mare and stallion to the offspring is important. That includes understanding how to intensify or select for a good trait, and how that simultaneously occurs with selecting for potentially negative traits. Your investigation collects information about ancestors' accomplishments. You'll explore how each mating resulted in performance on the track or the show ring. How did an equine athlete rate in type, soundness, elegance, or speed? You may also want to learn more about the coat color inheritance of a horse's ancestors. And if you really become entranced with equine family trees, you can trace an individual back to a registry's first studbook, published in the 19th or early 20th century. (Thoroughbreds trace back MQHA Journal • January 2015 • 27
to the 18th century, with the publication of the first General Stud Book in England.) Besides identifying each ancestor by its phenotype (external factors such as coat color and markings), you'll want to confirm its registration. In any breed that isn't a purebred (the three named earlier), you must be able to recognize codes that indicate the breed. The major North American breeds are simple: in a Quarter Horse pedigree, TB means Thoroughbred, and in a Paint's, AQHA represents Quarter Horse. However, the many studbooks of Europe use multiple abbreviations and codes, requiring more study. A Thoroughbred has xx added to its name, an Arabian, ox, and Anglo-Arabian x. Each studbook is represented by an abbreviation: Hann (Hannoverian), Holst (Holsteiner), SF (Selle Francais), Old (Oldenbourg), KWPN (Dutch), etc. Breeders in Europe frequently cross to individuals from other studbooks. Registries recognize the value of crossing back to "improvement" sires. The running Quarter Horse developed with the influx of Thoroughbred sprinters. Most spor t horses competing at Olympic level are the result of crossing Thoroughbred stallions on warmblood mares. (The Hannoverian state stud has imported U.S. Thoroughbreds to cross with German mares.) Birdsall points out an outstanding improvement sire for jumpers. "Ramzes was an Anglo-Arab, by a Thoroughbred out of an Arabian mare. Generations later he's commonly found in pedigrees. Horses of the Ramiro line go back to Ramzes--he's been a useful ingredient.” Over the centuries the Trakehner breed has infused Thoroughbred, Arabian, and AngloArabian lines to maintain its refinement. In 1998, the American Trakehner Association accepted its first-ever Arabian mare born in the U.S., Al-Marah Xanthium. The mare's approval is part of a pilot program to study the effect of adding select Arabian and Thoroughbred blood to the Trakehners bred in North America. To go beyond the basics of the certificate, you'll employ resources produced by breed registries and scholars. You can purchase studbooks in print form or CD-ROM. You can also read books by breed experts, who www.MIQuarterHorse.com
report on the major lines. Several such experts have web sites, where they share some information at no charge. Some registries have established ratings to classify individuals' performance. In the U.S., the Arabian Registry established a system of Achievement Awards in 1965. Superior horses receive points in recognition of their consistency in the show ring, on the racetrack, or in competitive trail and endurance rides. Specific symbols become part of the horse's name, and you'll see these in pedigree charts: Legion of Honor + Legion of Supreme Honor +/ Legion of Merit ++ Legion of Supreme Merit +++ Legion of Excellence +// Legion of Masters ++++ Quarter Horses registered with the AQHA can also earn similar awards, such as the Register of Merit (ROM). A horse that earned an AQHA Championship adds a # to his name; a few outstanding performers win the title of Supreme Champion. A racing Quarter Horse achieves a speed index rating, where a 100 matches a track's record. A high speed index, which may be abbreviated as s.i., indicates a fast race time. A racer that runs a speed index of 80 or higher earns a Racing ROM; the AA and AAA ratings also categorize racers. Thoroughbreds earn distinction as winners of stakes races. In a performance chart, you'll see codes of racing records. SW indicates stakes winner. Stakes are rated as Grade I, Grade II, or Grade III, with additional notes as turf (T) or restricted by other than age or sex (R). Advertisements and sales catalogs print names of stakes winners in bold type, called "black type." Thoroughbreds are also rated by breeding statistics. Stallions and mares have an Average-Earnings Index (AEI). This reflects the horse's progeny racing performance, compared with other foals racing at that time. A Comparable Index (CI) reports the average earnings of progeny produced by mares bred to one sire, when the same mares are bred to other stallions. Both the AEI and CI start at an average of 1.00. 2.00 is twice the average. For spor t horses, the French have established the Best Linear Unbiased
Reading About Genetics Dr. Ewart recommends these books: Horse Genetics, by Ann Bowling Equine Color Genetics, by D. Phillip Sponenberg and Bonnie V. Beaver
Predictor (BLUP) to measure a horse's genetic potential for show jumping. The World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses' yearbook ranks active performers in the three Olympic disciplines, along with sires. Individual horses earn points for performance; their positions in the list also qualify their studbooks for annual awards. Pedigree researchers record their findings. You might choose the card system, copying information onto a 3 x 5 card for each ancestor. Or, you can develop a computerized database that includes a record for every horse you're tracking. To simplify your records even more, try a specialized computer program (two names are CompuSire and TesioPower). Whatever medium you choose, carefully transfer names and details. Double-check your writing or typing to verify you're copying the data exactly as it appeared in the original resource. INTERPRET THE IMPACT In this step, you ask "Why?" Why did a breeder decide to mate a mare with a specific stallion? Your analysis explores the reasons behind matings, and clues toward improving the next generation. Recording animals within a breed helps breeders to select the best animals, improving the breed's performance through superior individuals. Systematic breeding aims to improve good qualities, while reducing or eliminating negative traits. Thoroughbred breeders look for that elusive "class" that makes a runner win stakes races. Arabian fanciers aim to increase the breed's traits of elegance, along with correct conformation and movement. Breeding horses is a science, and you'll need a basic background in genetics. You'll need to understand the differences between heterozygous and homozygous genes. Ewart explained, "Every gene we carry, we have two copies--one from each MQHA Journal • January 2015 • 28
parent. Those can either be identical or different. In an individual, you can have two copies that are identical, if homozygous, or one of each, heterozygous. The interaction determines your phenotype." Many breeders follow the practice of linebreeding, or crossing relatives in the effort to concentrate superior traits. Ewart terms linebreeding as "a polite way of saying you're breeding closely related individuals. The problem with inbreeding is that you are more likely to get this homozygous or identical copy of a gene copy. This may be good in a desirable trait, or it could be bad." Certain ancestors have proved to be prepotent, or perpetuating their traits in their offspring. A few notable examples include the Arabian Bask, the French jumper Galoubet, and the Morgan's foundation, Justin Morgan. In the Thoroughbred, the Dosage theory is based on a list of prepotent sires. This type of pedigree analysis identifies patterns of ability in horses, with the sires (each identified as a chef-de-race) classified into one or two of five categories. A point system predicts the racing ability of a mating. The Dosage index (DI) is a number that indicates a horse's potential for speed or stamina. Breeders debate the success of linebreeding vs. breeding type to type. No one knows for sure the results of crossing one horse with another, but analyzing the ancestors can help predict. Outcrosses bring "hybrid vigor" to a gene pool. Ewart said, "Hybrid vigor is a sound principle. Most individuals are healthier
when they have a limited number of homozygous genes. The heterozygous genes tend to have more heartiness, more vigor, and are more reproductively sound. It's probably a more sound way to produce an athlete--but it's harder to predict the results of an individual offspring of a mating.” In analyzing a pedigree, realize that some lines carry negative traits, such as genelinked diseases. Ewart noted that you might be able to track this inheritance by examining the sire and dam. (For more detail, see "Genetic Testing" in the December 1998 issue.) Maternal inheritance, or qualities passed on from the mare, has been in the news as the X-factor. However, a recent theory of the X-factor breeding a larger heart currently has no scientific evidence. Breeders look for the "nick," or how one line consistently crosses well with another. However, one horse resulting from a mating may excel, while his or her siblings may be average in their conformation and performance. Breeders also wrestle with the concept of the individual sire or dam producing one outstanding foal, yet others from the same cross were less-than-stellar performers. Birdsall advised breeders to plan matings for a horse's performance. "If you breed for a purpose, know which horses are at the top of the sport and how they're bred. Think several years down the road. Know what's winning and where those horses come from--then base your decisions on that knowledge.”
Do It Yourself, or Hire an Expert? The first step, tracking certificates, is simple. When you move into more thorough examination, you may decide to engage a pedigree researcher or consultant. Experts in the major breeds have devoted years of study; they know the bloodlines intimately. Their services include analyzing a pedigree, and advising you on recommended matings. For a fee, they can draw up a detailed pedigree chart. You can find experts advertising in breed magazines, and on the web. Two examples: A Thoroughbred service Edited pedigree (as in a sales catalog) $15.00 for 2 crosses, 3 dams Basic 4-cross pedigree, with race record and dosage $5.00 An Arabian service 6-generation pedigree with comments (major show wins, produce record, siblings for first 3 generations) $25.00 Basic 6-generation pedigree $15.00 Some consultants teach courses in pedigree research. You can also take courses from some breed organizations, led by officials employed by the registry. Award-winning writer Charlene Strickland lives in Bosque Farms, New Mexico. The net income as of the end of August is listed at $54,691.78 compared to $64,572.42 for the same period in 2013. A motion to approve the August, 2014 statement was made by Taylor Fabus. Bob Milks seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Warren English submitted the following report to the MQHA office prior to the meeting: Sorry to miss this meeting. The financials through August look very good. We are at $54,000 in profit, year to date. Our balance sheet shows a little over $300,000 in cash in the bank and an equity of $209,000. We are $10,000 under budget on income, year to date and $20,000 under budget in expenses. While I would like to see our income a little higher, our expenses have been a bit lower. I'm still concerned with the trend of income being lower, and again would remind all that we should be looking at small increases for next year's shows to pick this back up. I would really not like to see a major increase all at once and this trend has been about three years in the making. Picking up these trends are why we look at these financials all the time. The only concern I have www.MIQuarterHorse.com
is paid help, but this will equal out by the end of the year and I will address in next year's budget. Also please note that I will be working on the budget for 2015 and will have it ready to input in November. If you have any changes to your budget needs, please address them to the board for approval this month and October. TREASURER'S REPORT: Kris Woroniecki presented the check detail report showing all checks written for August 2014. After review, Jacque Moody made a motion to accept the check detail report for August. Bob Milks seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kris then presented the accounts payable and receivable repor ts. The accounts were reviewed. Megan Hirschman made a motion to accept the accounts payable and receivables report and Taylor Fabus seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: President Karen Waite thanked Jacque Moody and the Futurity Committee for pulling off a successful event. It was well attended and people seemed to have a good time. She also congratulated the Youth on a successful mum sale. VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Vice President Weitzel stated that she heard good things during the Futurity and very little complaining. She congratulated Jacque Moody on a successful event. Tiffany also stated that she was disappointed in the lack of response for volunteer help during the Futurity. OFFICE REPORT: Kris Woroniecki shared some thank you notes sent from various exhibitors and members, thanking the Association and staff for good things that happened. COMMITTEE REPORTS CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel stated that the committee will start discussion about finalizing plans for the Convention. She will communicate with the committee via email. FUTURITY: Jacque Moody explained that the committee operated short staffed with the resignation of Ted Meyer. She was disappointed in the response she received regarding volunteers to help with the hospitality and the exhibitor party. There were a few that did step up and she was thankful for everything that they did. The show went well and was well attended. The committee will report back on the financials once everything is in. HALL OF FAME: Jody Prime reported that the committee has narrowed down people candidates for the Hall of Fame. The committee is requesting additional horse candidates for consideration.
HARVEST CLASSIC: Kris Woroniecki reported that the show had about 175 stalls sold, but should still be ok considering the Novice Championship show which immediately followed. JOURNAL/WEBSITE: Kathy Christensen stated that the new website is being pulled together. She also explained that Cindy, the editor is holding an oldest MQHA Journal contest. Kathy explained that she has almost a complete set of old journals and is only missing a few issues. MEMBERSHIP/PUBLICITY: Morgan Warda has been in touch with GoHorseShow and is working on getting the 10 free page certificates that were part of the package that we bought earlier in the year. Morgan hopes that they can be used for the silent auction during the convention. There was discussion about the West Michigan Winter Horse Fest. The event will be held December 6 and 7 at a new location in Grand Rapids. Apparently the Michigan Horse Council is in a bit of disarray and the status of the MHC Expo is uncertain. The consensus amongst the Directors was that the West MI Winter Horse Fest might be a good fit for MQHA this year depending on the cost of the space. The MQHA office staff will get the details to Kathy Christensen and Morgan Warda for final determination. Kathy and Morgan will begin working on getting volunteers to work at the event. NOMINATIONS/ELECTION: Kris Woroniecki explained that there are four vacancies for the Board. Bob Milks asked that any information for potential candidates be shared with him so that the ballot can be completed. The bios/pictures for potential Directors are due to the office by November 1. She also mentioned that Michigan was well represented at both the Congress and at the World show. She congratulated all exhibitors. Tiffany also reminded everyone that the election ballots would be out soon and that everyone needs to vote. OFFICE REPORT: NSBA Executive Director, Dianne Eppers called the MQHA office and spoke about the possibility of MQHA adding NSBA dual approved classes back to the shows. Kris Woroniecki explained the process and the costs. The Board is not opposed to offering the classes, but they did feel as though the shows already run so long there is a concern for the classes adding additional time, not to mention putting additional tasks on the office. Kris explained that Dianne is willing to attend the MQHA Convention to explain NSBA to the membership. The Directors agreed that it might be a good idea to have her attend. The Directors also agreed that if MQHA was going to do anything with NSBA, it would be for 2016, not for 2015. Kris Woroniecki reviewed the State Qualifying for the AQHA Novice Championship show. After review, Megan Hirschman made a motion to accept the qualifying criteria as presented. Debbie Wadds seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kris Woroniecki shared the tentative 2015 Board meeting dates. After taking an unofficial poll, the Directors present at the meeting stated that they preferred the face to face meetings rather than the conference calls. A couple of the meeting dates were shifted around to help accommodate a few conflicts. Kris will go back www.MIQuarterHorse.com
and confirm availability at the MSU Pavilion and return a confirmed calendar to the Board. COMMITTEE REPORTS AWARDS: Monty Montgomery stated that the Year End saddles are in. The Reserve All Around awards are ordered. Several purchases were made at the Congress for both Year End and for horse show awards for 2015. The rest of the items will be purchased soon. CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel stated that she had been in contact with the Ramada representatives. She reiterated the issues we had last year with them, hoping that we will not have a repeat of the problems. Tiffany sent an email out to the committee and explained the jobs that needed to be covered by volunteers. Tom Gear has been confirmed. Taylor Fabus has volunteered to manage the silent auction. Jody Prime has offered to help her with that task. There was discussion about table decorations. Tiffany has a message in to Chris Baldwin about doing another scoring/scribing clinic. Kelly Chapman has been confirmed to help Tom Gear emcee. Tom Moore and Ken Mumy have been confirmed to do the stallion auction. EASTER SHOW: Monty Montgomery shared that the committee will meet after the Board meeting to review the showbill and finalize plans to move forward with the event. The AQHA show application is due by December 1. FUTURITY: Jacque Moody shared the financial report from the Futurity. The futurity cleared slightly more year to date than last year, but there are still a few outstanding items. Overall the show was up a few entries, down a few stalls and about the same on the camping hook ups. The awards bill was more, sponsorships and donations were down but the trainer sale was up. All in all, it was a good event and was well attended. Jacque explained that it is really a difficult task to maintain an economically sound, user friendly event. The Futurity committee will meet in January to break down the income and expense and begin preparing for the 2015 show. The show dates are tentative until AQHA responds to a request to move to September 17-20 in order to work with the MSU Pavilion. HALL OF FAME: Jody Prime reported to the office prior to the meeting that everything was set for the Hall of Fame. The pins have been ordered and the office will provide the certificates. Jody and Ken Mumy will work on the presentations at Convention. HARVEST CLASSIC: Meggen Baynes reviewed the profit and loss for the Harvest Classic show. The show was down almost $1700 from last year. The profit on the event was just over
$5000. Meggen is hoping that with the dates moving back to November, there will be fewer conflicts and the show will be better attended. She explained that a reserve all around award was added for this year and she feels it is an important bit of recognition for the exhibitors. She is hoping to add Ranch Horse Pleasure to the show for next year. JOURNAL/WEBSITE: Kathy Christensen explained the status of the new website design and due to some issues outside of the editor's control, the website will likely not be ready to go live until the spring of 2015. Kathy will keep the Board updated. MEMBERSHIP/PUBLICITY: Morgan Warda reported that the certificates from Gohorse show.com have been received and will be used for the silent auction in January. Morgan also asked about advertising the clinic and the tack sale in other publications that Morgan suggested. Kris Woroniecki asked that she get the costs and due dates together so that the committee can pursue it. Kathy Christensen reported that MQHA would have a booth for December 6 and 7 at the West MI Winter Horse Fest in Grand Rapids. She and Morgan are currently working to secure help for the weekend. NOMINATIONS/ELECTION: Kris Woroniecki shared the open ballot with the Board of Directors. It contains the names of five people for four positions. The youth ballot is ready as well. There are 10 youth members on their ballot. All 10 youth will be elected to their Board. QUEEN: Kathy Christensen stated that there were 16 candidates that ran for Congress Queen. MQHA Queen, Minae Zomer ended up 8th overall and NMQHA Queen Ashlynn Balmer ended up 7th overall. Kathy stated that Michigan was well represented and the membership should be proud. RULES & CONSTITUTION: Kris Woroniecki referred to the MQHA Rule Book, Section 3, Show and Special Event section, regarding Lead Line and Small Fry classes. Ideas and changes were proposed regarding changes to both. Kris will make the changes to the rulebook and bring the official version back for the December meeting. MQHA
fellow American Quar ter Horse enthusiasts, as well as introducing people to MQHA.
Hello All,
Outside of queening, I also recently completed my Bachelors degree from Western Michigan University. December was a very busy month for me!
I hope everyone had a happy holiday. The 2014 show season has concluded, and 2015 is now upon us. This past year has been a whirlwind for myself, and I am so excited to see what this new year has in store for not only me, but also all for my fellow equestrian enthusiasts. MQHA will be a part of some great upcoming events including the MQHA/4-H educational weekend that will include many educational clinics and discussions as well as the annual tack sale February 7 at the MSU Pavilion. Miss Meghan Murphy and I will be holding a forum to discuss being 'Equine Royalty'. There is more information regarding this weekend on the MQHA website. I recently attended the West Michigan Winter Horse Fest in Grand Rapids representing our great association. It was wonderful to spend the day talking to www.MIQuarterHorse.com
As 2014 goes in the books, I again would like to thank everyone that made this dream a reality. I am always amazed by the support that can encompass a single individual. Remember, as 2015 begins, we, as crazy horse people are all connected by this insane all consuming hobby, support each other, enjoy one anothers company, make friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
Minae & Jill Finley at the W MI Winter Horse Fest
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent this great association for the past six months, embrace what this new year has to offer, I know I will! “The past is not a place of residence, but a place of reference, dream big for 2015!” Sincerely, Minae Zomer
