By Nancy Wesolek-Sterrett, Dressage Dept. Head Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre Recent comments on a Meredith Manor Facebook page got me thinking about the importance of groundwork with our horses.

One alumnus asked for suggestions about a herd bound horse. Working the horse in the same pasture as his buddies was her only riding option. The horse worked willingly when riding toward the other horses but stubbornly resisted when turning away from them. Another wondered how to help a filly too scared to leave her side when she tried to work the baby horse from the ground in an arena.

These are tough problems but the answer to both is thoughtful, consistent groundwork that establishes the handler as leader of the herd in the horse's mind. In our training classes, we teach students to 'heed' rather than merely 'lead' their horses. The idea is to be totally focused on your horse from the moment you open the stall door and greet him, to the moment you put him away. You cannot ask the horse to give you his full attention if you do not give him your full attention first. That means putting aside your usual mind chatter, shutting off your cell phone, and limiting conver-sations with friends until your horse is put away.

Teaching a horse to heed is a step-by-step process. We start baby horses at liberty, and then apply the same principles to moving them on a lead line. With some horses, you might start on the lead line. Either way, the sequence of mental and physical pressures you use is the same. First, you pay attention to the speed and direction the horse offers and MATCH it. Then you use your body language to SHOW the horse a change that's just a step away from that. You SHOW him the change you want until he consistently matches you. Now you have reached the point where you can ASK the horse and expect the response you want. When the horse consistently understands what you want and offers it, only then is it fair to TELL the horse what you want and reinforce it with your aids if he refuses.

When the horse matches your requests for basic changes in speed and direction on a lead line, you can add elements that increase the mental and physical difficulty and the subtleties of the communication between you. For example, before I ever get on a young www.MIQuarterHorse.com

horse, I use groundwork to start showing him how to move away from the pressure of my leg. From my heeding position at the horse's shoulder, I put the hand with the lead behind my back and use my other hand (or the butt end of my whip if the horse is large) and apply pressure where the leg will be. Initially, a horse will move into pressure. He needs to learn to move away from it. Since release from pressure is the greatest reward, I repeat the pressure until the horse moves away from it, even a tiny bit, and immediately release it.

By the time I get in the saddle, the horse understands a little bit about communication from the rider's leg and we have a good start.

Again, I follow the training sequence of show, ask, and tell.

Let's see how this might apply to our Facebook questions. The girl with the herd bound horse might work her horse from the ground on a lead rope until the horse willingly responds on both sides to pressures to start, stop, adjust speed at the walk or trot, circle, turn on the forehand or hindquarters, and leg yield. Once she establishes her leadership on the ground, she can use this new connection in her under saddle work. For example, she might try working in a circle around the herd at a distance the horse is comfortable with.

Then she might leg yield to increase the distance rather than riding directly toward or away from the other horses. Incrementally asking the horse to do another thing just one step away from what he is already comfortable with will reinforce her leadership role without pushing the horse so far out of his comfort zone that he reverts to his former stubborn resistance.

The scared young horse considers her trainer 'the herd' and she does not want to leave this safety zone. When the trainer establishes her leadership through careful, consistent groundwork on a lead rope, she can gradually ask the filly to expand the distance at which they perform their little pax de deux. As the filly's trust and confidence grows, their connection should make the introduction to under saddle work easy both mentally and physically.

Groundwork is not just for green horses or resistant horses, however. It can be a great way to introduce new movements such as turns on the haunches or forehand, leg yield

or side pass. If an older horse tends to be stiff, exercises on the ground can help supple him before mounting. If you do not have access to an indoor arena, you can create a groundwork exercise program for your horse that can be done in the barn aisle when weather or footing keeps you inside.

Groundwork when you cannot ride keeps your horse's muscles and mind conditioned until you can.

Groundwork can even be done with the horse standing still. Static exercises can help horses work their muscles like crunches and weight lifting can help riders work theirs out of the saddle. Ask your horse to contract his back muscles and lift his belly by pressing your hands or fingers along the midline of his belly. Depending on the horse you may need to wiggle your fingers, tickle, or move your hands forward or back a bit. You can also use your fingers along the rump area down the hind leg to round the horse's lower back area, you can do one side at a time (be careful not to stand directly behind the horse). Use carrot or apple treats to ask your horse to stretch straight down in front of himself, between his front legs, and along his sides toward the point of his hip and lower down toward his stifle. Experiment to test your horse's flexibility and work to increase his range of motion. Nerves at the ends of muscles send 'stop' messages to the brain to avoid overstretching injuries. Instead of working for duration, hold a stretch for 3 or 4 seconds then release and repeat. With each stretch you should be able to go deeper and see an improvement. A program of static and moving groundwork can be a great way start rehabilitating a horse coming off an injury.

Some riders consider groundwork inferior to saddle time. I encourage them to change their perspective. Think of groundwork as a 'reset' button that helps you and your horse become better partners when training issues arise. Horses that have bonded with you definitely work better for you under saddle.

My horses love scratches and body work because it feels good and they often scratch me back. Ground work helps with the nervous or scared horse. The routine is very relaxing to them. Think of groundwork as a rehab tool for muscles and mind when injuries sideline your horse. When weather or time pressures keep you from riding, even a shor t time spent doing groundwork reinforces the mental connection with your horse. Good groundwork will pay dividends whenever you get back in the saddle.

Horse Show Moms & Dads These Pages Are Dedicated To You! Introduction written by Kimm McDowell What does it mean to take on the role of Horse Show Mom (or Dad)? Little did I know what I was getting into when my darling daughter asked me at age nine to let her show her pony in 4-H! It started innocently enough, as I look back now at photos chronicling her evolution from 4-H cutie to the poised college freshman showing at the World Show level today. Those photos show so much, from her first ribbon won with her pony to the coveted medallions won at the Congress.

Sure, the clothes (and the price tags that came with them!) have changed, but what those photos don’t show are the hours of grooming, clipping, bathing, training, and drying of tears both of joy and disappointment that came along the way. Those photos also don’t show how the Horse Show parent worked so diligently in the background to help ensure their little equestrian had the best chance with the best they could afford to be able to take those photos capturing the moments in life that take your breath away. I am proud of being a Horse Show Mom and being just a small part of my daughters success, whether it is fetching her gloves, wiping off her boots, lunging the horse while she gets her hair done, cleaning tack, walking the horse at three a.m. when we worry about colic, cleaning the stall, feeding at five a.m. so she can sleep one more hour, pinning her back number on (straight this time!) hauling out for lessons, washing the fake tail, or just paying the bill.

The scrapbooks of photos also cannot contain the memories of shared confidences, and long talks held in the privacy of the truck while driving to the next horse show. I was privileged to gain insight into my daughters thoughts, dreams, and worries as we forged a relationship that has grown deeper as every year passed (or at least when she wasn’t asleep five minutes after leaving the driveway!). Memories swirl in my head of the first time she was bucked off her pony mixed with the memory of the first time she won a buckle. The reward today for hours spent together is huge, as I see a confident, outgoing, tender hearted, accomplished equestrian that is on her way to being an adult any parent would be proud of.

I could talk about the three jobs I work trying to pay for the high cost of showing on the quarter horse circuit, but that’s not even relevant when my daughter says with joy “Mom, watch this!” as she executes a perfect pattern, grabs the right diagonal, puts her horse over a jump, or gets that elusive flying lead change. Then I only see that gap toothed nine year old in the oversized Western hat begging me to “Please Mom I want to show horses!” And my heart is full.

I was exposed to horses since the day I was born. My dad had horses growing up, so we always had a horse or two around. My sister and I starting showing 4-H with the help of Joe and Jan Todaro back when I was 8 yrs old and my sister, Rhonda was 12.

We needed help since my sister rode a stud and I had a fat pony.

Once we got help, we gelded the stud and Rhonda continued to show him and I got a palomino gelding that was already shown in open shows and AQHA. My palomino was the first horse that was mine. Of course at 9, I did not pay for him, but did have to sign a contract that I would ride and take care of him. I still have that contract and haven’t broken it.

I was a horse crazy kid with my room full of horse posters and every school project somehow ended up being about a horse. It was actually my dad’s idea for us to start showing. He wanted us to be involved with horses and 4-H. He tried to get us to do more speed events, but we liked the show side, so we stuck with that. My mom wasn’t too thrilled about the horse showing since she was scared to death of horses, but as you can see she came around.

My dad did not show but was involved with the 4-H, racing his ponies. He had buggies and cutters that he would hook up his pony and horses to. My moms only experience with a horse was being bitten as a kid. She rode a little at home mostly because my dad forced her too. He bought her a quiet grade mare named Lucky that she rode through the fields with us but wouldn’t run. That was the last horse she had. The more we got involved in showing the more she started to like it and help us out.

She went to all of our lessons and began helping us at home. It only took her 13 years to finally get her in the showring. She showed my horse. He Is Special, “Luther” in Novice Amateur Showmanship and I showed him in the Amateur classes. They were quite a force. They ended up winning the state of Michigan, winning the circuit championship every time shown. My mom then noviced out of showmanship that year and had no desire to ride. 10 years later when Luther was 18, my mom decided she wanted to show again. Again they kept their winning ways with a circuit championship every time and won more than 50% of the classes she entered. They reached her goal of qualifying for the Select World show. She did not show because of the long haul. Luther was then retired.

The most memorable experiences I have is traveling all over Canada, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan with her and just spending good quality time together. We have spent countless hours together on the road and at home and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. She has been with me through the highs and lows of showing. She is my trainer, my mom and my friend.

My future goal is to do as best as I can in all my events. Of course I would love to win the Congress or World, but I just want to be competitive no matter where I show.

My mom has helped me at home for years now, since I am 37. She came to all my lessons and had trainers help her, to best help me at home. We like keeping the horse home as much as we can. She has helped coached me to top ten placings at Congress, in the national standings and countless MQHA year end awards. Over the past few years she has helped both my sister and I more than probably any other mother would do. Since I live 2 hours away from my parents, she works my horse regularly to prep him for shows. She also does all the clipping and loads the horses and takes them to the show mostly herself. We try to meet her somewhere where she doesn’t have to drive most of it alone. After the show, she drives the horses home and she and my dad unload and get them ready for the next show. Lets just say my sister and I are very blessed to have a mom who not only loves us, but also loves helping us out.

My mother introduced me to horses at a very young age. She grew up riding and showing horses, and so did I. I own three horses right now. Terms Of The Story, Impulsed N Moonlight, and Malibu Margarita. I ride Western and English.

Growing up, my mom showed western events at open shows and 4Meghan and her mom, Mary H. My mom shows in the Select Amateur All-Around Events currently.

In 2012 and 2013 she showed my all-around gelding, Terms Of The Story. We recently purchased a new horse that she will be making her debut with in 2014, I also plan to show him some too. His name is Impulsed N Moonlight. We also own a two-year old black filly named Malibu Margarita. We share all three of our horses with each other.

My mom and I have traveled to shows together since I was a child. I really enjoyed when I was younger and we both showed a lot and each had our own horses. One moment that will forever be special to me is when I won my first Congress Championship. It was in 2005 in the Novice Youth Hunt Seat Equitation with a horse we bought on our Meghan, her mom and brother own and boarded at a facility about ten minutes from my house. I started receiving help with him from Jennifer Leckey about two weeks before the Congress but otherwise, most of it my mother and I did on our own. My goal was to place at the Congress for the first time in my life. Well, I not only accomplished my goal of placing at the Congress for the first time….but an even bigger goal of becoming a Congress Champion! I was so excited and I think my mother was even more excited!

A time that was special to me was when my mother showed in AQHA for the first time in her life in 2012. She showed my horse in the Select Amateur Horsemanship in East Lansing and won on both of the judge’s cards. She was happy and I was extremely happy for her.

Another highlight would of course be when I was crowned the 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. Anyone who knows me well, knows that this has been a dream of mine since I was nine years old. I am glad my family was able to be there to experience it with me.

In the future, I would like to compete in the Amateur Versatility at the Congress and I would ultimately love to win an AQHA World Championship. My mother has goals of qualifying for the Novice Championship and Select Amateur World Championship…. my goal is for her to win!

My mom has always been my biggest supporter. Whether she is there to be my groom, biggest fan, or provide mental support, she is the best. She’s been to almost all of my shows, no matter what kind of show they are. She rarely misses one, even when I was competing in the NCAA, she flew all over the country to attend most all of my NCAA competitions. When I was competing for Congress Queen she was a tremendous support and went to the Congress with me both years, stayed on the grounds in her motor home and was around for the entire competition, even though I was busy with the contest a lot of the time and stayed with the other queen contestants in a hotel. I got started in horses through 4-H. My mom, Darlene, had horses as a kid, but wasn’t able to show.

She was very excited when I wanted to start taking lessons. I really wanted to show horses and I had my moms full support.

Though my sole focus today is Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle, I ride everything from Saddle Seat to Gymkhana. We currently own three horses, the least amount we have owned for twenty years!

My mom started to show when she turned 50. It was one of the things on her “bucket list.” She started with good ole’ Mel, a.k.a. Tiger Zziples, then bought her own horse, Just Chippin, which we both qualified for the World with. Now she has Too Cold Too Sleep and is very excited to continue learning.

We have shared almost all of the horses we have owned in the show ring. It’s sometimes a challenge, but we have always made it work.

Some of the most memorable experiences I have had showing with my mom is camping. We didn’t have a living quarter trailer until I got married. As a youth we had a two horse bumper pull organized to become our “camper” as needed. One tub had the kitchen, one the bathroom, etc. While I was working horses, my mom would clean out the back of the trailer, then put a tarp down, blow up mattresses, and then hang fans or heaters, depending on the season. It wasn’t glamorous, but it worked. I have pictures of us sleeping with hats and gloves on!

I have many goals for the future, but I am superstitious about sharing them. My main goal is to have fun and be competitive. The time that I spend at shows with my mom are priceless!

I’d like to share this fun story about my mom (sorry mom). My mom wanted a pony so bad when she was little. Her parents adamantly said no until she was 7. Her mom was going to have her baby sister.

Apparently to ease the transition with the new baby, she got her pony. Not just any pony did she receive, but a large ex-rodeo pony! Her sister is not fond of horses to this day. And for good reason...

My mom put a feather in her sisters hair like an Indian and tied her to the front of the pony and set the pony loose in a field! A neighbor drove by and saw the child tied to the pony and knocked on the house door to find her parents. Hmm, Darlene was no where to be found. Wonder how that happened!

The total assets of the Association as of August 31, 2013 are listed at $344,581.55; the total liabilities at $157,952.32 and the total members' equity is listed at $186,629.23. The net income as of the end of August is listed at $64,031.83 compared to $61,479.12 for the same period in 2012. Debbie Wadds made a motion to approve the August 2013 financial statement. TREASURER’S REPORT: Kris Woroniecki presented the check detail report showing all checks written for August 2013. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: President Karen Waite stated that it has been a very successful year and she thanked the Board for all of their efforts.

Karen also explained that she worked with Meghan Murphy on completing the Congress Queen application.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Vice President Tiffany Weitzel apologized to the Board for her absence throughout the show season, which she www.MIQuarterHorse.com

explained was due to family issues. She said that she is hearing very positive feedback on MQHA horse shows.

COMMITTEE REPORTS CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel explained that it appears as though the membership would like to find a new location for the Convention in 2014.

The comments were that the current venue was just too crowded and that people in the back could not hear or see. Tiffany is working on finding a new hotel.

FUTURITY: Jacque Moody reported that the Futurity is looking like it will be comparably sized to last years' show. The overall income will be down because of the trainer sale. Sponsors are also down slightly. The Committee will host a pizza party on Thursday night. Ted Meyer will be putting on the exhibitor party Saturday night. Ted will also be managing the hospitality area and feeding the judges. Jacque hopes that the weather will hold out for the show.

HARVEST CLASSIC: Taylor Fabus and Charlie Closser reported that the show is coming together nicely. They are looking for gate and ring help. The class awards are ordered and the high point awards have been agreed on.

QUEEN: Kathy Christensen reported that she has been helping Meghan Murphy get ready for the Congress. Kathy explained that the contestants must provide gifts to the other Queen candidates.

Kathy asked for help in gathering items that would be appropriate.

STALLION SERVICE SALE: Chris Perniciaro stated that the SSS committee is working on gathering information to possibly change the format of the auction for 2015. There was also discussion that the SSS and Futurity committee would like to have a trophy made in memory of Jim Evans. Taylor Fabus made a motion to pursue raising the money needed to create a trophy and fund future replica trophies. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed.

YOUTH: Michelle McDowell mentioned that the Youth would like to have a tail wash fundraiser during the Futurity and they would like to have a leadless showmanship at the Harvest Classic.

Michelle also described the Good Ride shirts that the Youth would like to purchase for the NYATT team. Megan Hirschman made a motion to allow the Youth to spend up to $1500 from their fundraising money to pay for black Good Ride shirts for the NYATT team. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed.

NATIONAL DIRECTOR UPDATE: None OLD BUSINESS: Kris Woroniecki reminded everyone about the discussion about moving the Summer Series from Memorial Weekend in Allegan to Midland in June. Megan Hirschman made a motion to keep Summer Series in Allegan on the existing weekend. Taylor Fabus seconded

the motion. Motion passed with Powers and Wadds opposed.

NEW BUSINESS: Tom Powers mentioned the loss of Jerry Cappy. The Cappy family has been a staple around the MQHA shows for many, many years. The Board sent their condolences to the family and Kris will mail a card to the family.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: President Karen Waite welcomed the Board to the meeting. She congratulated everyone on moving toward the end of another great year. There has also been a lot of success by Michigan exhibitors at the shows and a new Congress Queen. Karen stated that there is a lot that Michigan should be proud of. She is looking forward to attending to convention to celebrate all of these accomplishments.

VICE PRESDIENT’S REPORT: Vice President Tiffany Weitzel commended the SSS Committee on their hard work. Everyone knew there would be a huge void without Jim Evans. The committee has really stepped up to keep the sale successful.

There is a great list of stallions. She especially thanked Julie Leek for all of her efforts for the sale.

OFFICE REPORT: Kris Woroniecki stated to the Board that in the earlier years that she worked at this job with MQHA, the Directors used to have dinner purchased by the Association as appreciation for their work throughout the year.

Kris went on to explain that the association had a few very lean years and one of the things that got cut out was purchasing dinner for the Directors.

She asked if it might be time to offer it again. Taylor Fabus made a motion that MQHA should purchase a Director dinner for Convention. Jody Prime seconded the motion. Motion passed with Moody abstaining.

Kris also explained the situation with the horse show computer. Debbie Wadds made a motion to form a committee to evaluate needs for horse show management hardware. The committee will respond at the December 10 meeting with upgrade ideas not to exceed $2500. Jacque Moody seconded the motion. Motion passed with Fabus and Weitzel opposed. Kris passed out a calendar of the Board Meeting dates for 2014.

COMMITTEE REPORTS CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel explained that Monty Montgomery, Stacy MOntogmery, Kris Woroniecki, Aschelle VanZandt and she toured the Ramada Inn in Lansing for the upcoming Convention. The layout should work well. The room for the dinner will be much larger than in the previous years. There is a big pool area with a game room attached which the kids should enjoy.

Room reservations include breakfast. The hotel is pet friendly. A decision was made to hire Tom Gear. Tom will bring in his sound system which will be used for the Stallion Service auction all the way through midnight. He has agreed to help emcee the awards dinner. This should eliminate the issues we have had in prior years with people having trouble hearing and issues with the sound system conflicting and squealing. Taylor Fabus, Kathy Christensen, Stacy Montgomery and Nicole Veldhoff have agreed to take on the silent benefit auction. Plated dinners will be offered this year as opposed to having a buffet. The plated dinners were less expensive than the buffet at this location. The dinner prices were raised over last year by $8 per person. This was necessary to cover the additional costs of the new venue. There will still be no registration fee. Tiffany wants the membership to understand that they need to get their room reservations and dinner reservations in on time. It is not a mandate to buy a dinner ticket to attend the banquet; however, we need to meet a certain room reservation number as well as a certain dinner reservation number to be able to afford the facility. If we do not meet these numbers, we may have to raise prices substantially for upcoming years. Debbie Wadds will make centerpieces for the dinner tables which will be given away at the end of the evening. There will be snacks made available into the evening.

Sasha Glover, the MQHYA Vice President has offered to put together a slide show to display during the festivities. He is requesting photos be sent to him. He can be found on Facebook or the photos can be sent to the MQHA office. There will be a formal MQHA photo backdrop for anyone wanting to get Year End Awards pictures.

EASTER SHOW: Monty Montgomery explained that the Easter show committee met and has finalized the showbill for the event. It will be held April 17 – 20, 2014. The AQHA show application has been submitted and the judges are hired.

Some of the awards have been purchased.

FINANCE: Kris Woroniecki stated that Warren English spent a day in September at the office.

They met with the new bookkeeper, Polly, and Warren explained to her what he hoped to have for the budget for 2014. Polly will have the budget ready for Warren to present at the January meeting. He wanted to remind everyone that if

they had changes to their budgets, he needs the information prior to the December meeting.

Warren also had discussion with Kris about an incentive plan for the employees. He is going to pull numbers together and present it to the Board after the first of the year. The Executive Secretary/ Treasurer contract renews in April.

Kris also mentioned that the CPA firm has contacted us about gathering information for the 2013 Year End Review. Last year the review cost $2400 plus an additional $850 for the 990 and 990T. Megan Hirschman made a motion that we bypass the review for 2013. The motion was tabled until we could determine what the cost of the 990 and 990T were going to be if the CPA firm did not do the year end review. Kelly Chapman also asked what the cost of an audit would be. Kris will follow up on these questions and get back to the Board for the next meeting.

FUTURITY: Jacque Moody reported that there was a MQHA Breeders' Futurity meeting held with a Stallion Service Sale meeting on November 6.

The committee reviewed the profit and loss statement and it looks like the Futurity should end the year with a profit slightly ahead of 2012. They are happy with the numbers considering the late start on sponsorships and the lack of the trainer sale. Jacque is going to spend a day at the MQHA office next week working on the showbill so that it can be reviewed by the Committee at the January meeting during Convention. Work is already being done to get the Trainer's sale rejuvenated for 2014.

HARVEST CLASSIC: Taylor Fabus explained that the Harvest Classic was down 132 entries, 13 campers and 22 stalls which resulted in revenue being down about $1600. The show will be in September for 2014 and can move back to November for 2015.

JOURNAL/WEBSITE: Kris is working with Cindy to get the website cleaned up and updated for 2014. Kris has also requested a quote to have the website redone to make it more user-friendly.

Kathy Christensen mentioned that the January issue will include a Horse Show Mom and Dad’s section. There was discussion about the two MQHA Facebook pages and it was suggested that the name of one of them gets changed to a MQHA marketplace. It was also mentioned that the link on the MQHA webpage goes to the public page and should be changed to the other one.

MEMBERSHIP/PUBLICITY: Morgan Warda stated that the Membership committee is quite under-utilized. She would like to see it have more to do. Tiffany will get with her on some marketing things that used to be done that haven't been.

NOMINATIONS: Kris shared the current ballot with the Board of Directors and asked if there were any additional names to be added. The ballot goes in the December MQHA Journal as well as on the website. Review nominations on ballot!

QUEEN: Kathy Christensen reported that Meghan Murphy was successful in her bid to become Congress Queen. Congratulations to Meghan!

Meghan was 3rd in the test, 1st in the interview and 1st in the horsemanship. Kathy wanted to thank Caleb Bailey for the use of “Invitation To Boot” for the horsemanship. He was kind enough to get horse prepared for her to show. Meghan is planning on fulfilling her Congress Queen duties as well as her MQHA duties. Kathy stated that she is starting to look for candidates for the 2014 contest.

RULES: Constitutional Rule Change – Megan Hirschman presented the following to the Board: Proposed Constitutional Rule Change As the final step to re-qualify MQHA as a Service organization to conduct licensed gaming events as allowed by Act 382 of the Public Acts of 1972, the State of Michigan Bureau of State Lottery is requiring that we have the following verbiage as part of our MQHA Rule Book.

MQHA – MQHYA CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IV - OFFICERS AND DUTIES Add: SECTION 9 – DISSOLUTION OF ASSOCIATION All assets and real property will revert to the local government or another nonprofit organization should the organization dissolve.

Megan Hirschman made a motion approve. Taylor seconded the motion Motion passed with none opposed.

SHOW APPROVAL: The 2014 Show Approval meeting will be held as a conference call. The date will be set soon. The MQHA office was waiting for information from AQHA regarding the new novice exhibitor parameters.

STALLION SERVICE SALE: Chris Perniciaro reported that there was a MQHA Breeders' Futurity meeting held with a Stallion Service Sale meeting on November 6. Chris explained that the committee has been working hard to get the stallions enrolled for the 2014 sale. Currently there are 108 stallions that will make it into the December issue of the MQHA journal. There is still time to get stallions into the supplement that will be updated on the website. The committee will take stallion donations up until the sale starts on January 11.

YEAR END AWARDS: Monty Montgomery stated that the majority of the awards are either purchased or decided on. The remainder should be chosen in the next week or two. All Around, Reserve All Around and the High Point Halter Horse awards are done. The committee is waiting on the final points to be approved. For the awards presentation, the committee is going to do things differently this year. Instead of allowing people to pick up their items as their names are announced, they will all wait to retrieve their items until after all of the names and accomplishments are read. It is hoped that this will alleviate confusion, eliminate noise and chaos disrespectful to others, and will help with the problem of having awards disappear.

receive their certificate, can have a photo with the Queen and the certificate and then when everything is done, they will take their certificates to the “awards room” to pick up their items.

Winners will be excused by name to get their items. They can then stop at the photo back drop and take their own photos if wanted. The journal editor will also be in attendance and may be able to shoot some pictures for the magazine.

YOUTH: Nicole Veldhoff explained that MQHYA President, Michelle McDowell has really wanted to put something together as a fun activity for the youth that aren't on the show teams. She tried to pull together an event at Craigs Cruisers but could not get the attendance numbers needed. In place of that event, Michelle would like to give a small gift at the Convention to all of the kids who are involved with the Association. She hoped that they could take a few minutes during the Awards presentation to recognize the Youth who have been either on the Board or have helped throughout the year. The Youth have fundraising money left from 2013 and she hoped to get support to use that money. Nicole also explained that the Youth have some left over donated items from their Easter fundraiser. They were thinking about wrapping the items in boxes and selling the boxes during the Convention as a fundraiser. The Board thought it would be a fun idea.

There was also discussion about some rule changes. Nicole gained a consensus on the items and indicated that she would bring something back for the December meeting.

Nicole discussed with the Board the fact that the Youth did a lot of fundraising in 2013 and currently have about $3500 remaining. She would like to have that money held for use on start up fundraising for 2014. Taylor Fabus made a motion to approve earmarking $3000 in Youth Fundraising money for use as start up fundraising money. Jody Prime seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Nicole mentioned several fundraisers that they are thinking about and will come back to the board with more information at a later time.

NATIONAL DIRECTOR UPDATE: Chris Baldwin explained that the AQHA Leveling/Novice program is back on. More details will follow. Chris mentioned the loss of the stallion, Good I Will Be. Condolences go out to Stephen Stephens. Chris also mentioned that Carl Yamber had a heart attack and a stroke. Carl has ties to Michigan. She wished him a speedy recovery. Chris will be hosting a scoring clinic during the Convention. It will be held on Saturday, January 11 at 1:00 p.m.

NEW BUSINESS – Unsportsmanlike Conduct – The following was taken from the 2013 AQHA Rule Book and shared with the Directors: • VIO220. UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT or any other form of misconduct that is irresponsible, illegal, indecent, profane, intimidating, threatening or abusive is prohibited. This provision applies to:

• VIO220.1 AQHA members, non-members, exhibitors, trainers, owners, owner representatives, spectators and all other persons on the show grounds of an AQHA-approved event; and • VIO220.2 AQHA members on the show grounds of an event held in conjunction with an AQHAapproved event; and • VIO220.3 AQHA members on the show grounds of an event during which an AQHA-approved class is held regardless of whether the conduct is associated with or occurs during an AQHAapproved class.

• VIO221. Show management may immediately expel individuals exhibiting unsportsmanlike conduct from show grounds and shall file a written report with AQHA concerning the conduct in question.

This information was shared with the Board of Directors as the result of a discussion with the MQHA Executive Committee. Over the 2013 show season, there were several instances of bad behavior on the part of a few MQHA exhibitors.

The Board agreed that this information needs to be posted at the MQHA Horse Show office, put on our website and on our showbills. Karen Waite will work on adding some additional wording specific to MQHA. OLD BUSINESS: A motion to adjourn was made at 12:30 p.m. by unanimous consent without objection.
