Minae Zomer tells about her experience at the 2013 All-American Quarter Horse Congress Overall, do you feel your experience at Congress was positive?: It was definitely positive. It’s my favorite time of the year. And to be surrounded with the amount of talent that shows at Congress is refreshing, the show is run smoothly and it’s such a change of pace from the weekend shows. Who did you attend Congress with and how long did you stay? I attended with my mom, Renee Holstege, and my dad and trainer Greg Holstege. They were there for two weeks with the youth clients; I was there for one week. What classes did you participate in and what was your horse’s name in each class? I showed in the Amateur Equitation and HUS and my mom showed the Novice Amateur Equitation and HUS. We both showed Too Sleepy To Chip. Do you feel this is the ultimate Quarter Horse show? I do. There is so much talent there, the best of the best. And you can learn so much through observing the warm up pens and watching the classes. It’s just amazing to think that there can be so much knowledge and ability in one place at one time, and everyone sharing the same passion. Did you place in any classes at the Congress? If so, please list which ones. I placed eighth in Amateur Equitation and my mom placed twelfth in Novice Amateur Hunter Saddle, there were over 200 entries in her class!

Do you think that anyone that shows Quarter Horse should experience Congress at least once? For sure, even if you do not get to show there, anyone that shows should go to at least watch. You can learn so much, and I know for me, I always come home with higher aspirations and a stronger work ethic, because I see the best of the best and want to reach that next level. You don’t really understand what Congress is and how big of a deal it is until you attend. How do you deal with the pressure before entering the show ring? It took many years to be able to handle my nerves, and I definitely do not have them reigned in completely, I was a nervous wreck for my mom. However, for me I just have to believe that I deserve to be there. I know that I have put my time in and you just have to be willing to accept whatever happens. I think to myself, I have this one opportunity and I cannot let my nerves take that from me. I don’t think of what could or might happen, I just do what I am capable of and accept the outcome.

Minae & Mom, Renee Holstege

Minae & Too Sleepy To Chip Do you feel the cost to show at Congress is within reason or do you feel the fees are excessive? For tunately, showing at Congress for me is my Christmas present and I do not have to pay for it. However, I feel that it is expensive, but this hobby as a whole is expensive. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

What was your most exciting experience at this year’s Congress? I have two: I was very excited to finally make the finals and place in the equitation. That is my favorite class, and it took me five years to make the call back in it, it was incredibly rewarding because I had put in a lot of time on a young horse this year and I think it really helped my equitation even with my trusty partner Earl. But I was most excited for my mom. She has sacrificed a lot for me to be able to show, and I was so happy she finally got the chance to experience her name being called over the speakers at Congress. She had three goes in the HUS and she rode each one better and

better. She was amazing for only riding Earl a short amount of time, she used to only show western so it was a big step outside of her comfort zone and to see her in the finals made me the proudest daughter at Congress! What advice would you give to a first time Congress participant? I would say, don’t let the nerves take over and just realized how blessed you are to be there. Get sleep when you can, and at least one treat from the sweet shop.

Renee Holstege & Too Sleepy To Chip Please add a few paragraphs on why this year’s Congress was different than past years (if you’ve attended before): This Congress was so different because my mom and I were sharing the same horse. I have shown Earl at Congress multiple times, but my mom just started riding and showing him this summer while I was showing a younger horse. So I was incredibly nervous for her because I wanted Earl to be good. It was unique because my step dad trained him, and I have shown him, so we both know how to prepare him best for me, but it was different preparing him for my mom. Earl was awesome though, and sharing a horse at congress this year benefitted us both. It was rewarding to see our family working so well together. This years congress was really exciting for our family, because the horse we showed Greg has trained from the beginning. He is also the one that taught me how to ride and he has been my moms trainer for over fifteen years, so to see all of us share in the same success, when we all started horse with little to no experience it was incredibly gratifying and a rewarding experience for our family, and to top it off when we returned home my brother made it to the national semi finals in college soccer! My brother and I would never be as successful as we are if it weren’t for my parents instilling the incredible work ethic they both have in us, and giving us all the opportunity in the world to follow our dreams. MQHA Congratulations to everyone who exhibited at the All American Quarter Horse Congress! I heard the names of several MQHA members announced over the loud speaker during class results every single day! Each of you have made Michigan proud, because, whether you won a medallion or not, competing at the largest single breed horse show in the world is an accomplishment in its self and is something to be proud of! It is a great honor to be the 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen! It is truly a dream come true. I am proud to be the sixth MQHA Queen to win the Congress Queen title. Since I was nine years old, I have looked up to all of our former queens, who have competed for the Congress Queen crown. The Congress Queen’s Contest is comprised of three categories: oral interview (40%), written test on the AQHA handbook (40%) and western horsemanship (20%). The candidates scores are added up in each category and the contestant with the highest score overall is crowned Congress Queen. In the 2013 Congress Queen’s Contest, I was the oral interview winner and the western horsemanship winner, and I placed third on the written test. I don’t know how to sufficiently thank MQHA and every single person who helped me earn this honor. I did not win this on my own or for myself, every single person who has supported me, helped me, and guided me from the very beginning, to my 1st runner-up finish in 2012, to the Congress Queen crown in 2013, has had a part in this win. I truly thank every single one of you. Thank you first and foremost to God for giving me this life and opportunity to touch so many lives. He is in control and consistently reminds me that His plan is always greater than my own. Thank you to my amazing mother, Mary Unger for always being my biggest supporter. She has sacrificed so much for me over the years to help me achieve my dreams. It is her turn to shine now, look for her in Select Amateur events with her new horse Impulsed N Moonlight. Thank you to my family, dad, stepmom, stepdad and two younger brothers, Keegan and Logan. Each one of you have helped me tremendously, I appreciate you coming to my shows no matter where they are. Thank you Logan, for going down to Columbus again just to help me transport my prizes home on a Sunday night! Also, thanks to my Aunt Joann for attending her first horse show in July to support me during the MQHA Queen’s Contest, then for attending her second horse show in October to support me at the Congress. I think her next step into the horse industry is to get her on a horse for the first time! Thank you Kathy Christensen and Karen Waite for your continued support and guidance. Additionally, thank you to Karen Waite, Louanne Service and my mother Mary Unger for being my guests at the Congress Queen’s Cocktail and Dinner party in Columbus. Thank you Beckey Schooler, Gwen Decker, Blake Britton, and Robert Larson for helping me prepare for the horsemanship. Thank you Caleb Bailie and family for allowing me to show Invitation To Boot. Good luck to new owner Alyssa Luckhardt, Booty is so much fun to show, you are going to love her! Thank you Sydney Anson and family for helping me get to the Congress Queen’s Contest by allowing me to show RL Sudden Touch in the MQHA Queen’s Contest in 2012 and 2013. Thank you to everyone at Beckey’s Place for helping me get www.MIQuarterHorse.com

ready the day of the horsemanship at the Congress, including Candy Edgerton…after two girls of your own, you are a pro horse show mom! Thank you to all who watched and cheered for me during Queen’s Horsemanship in the Celeste Arena and thank you to those at home who watched on the live-feed! Thank you to everyone who helped me prepare for the written test by quizzing me formally and informally or by flipping through the thousands of note cards I made, including, but not limited to Alyssa Freeman, Austin Gooding, Brandy Baldwin-Bunting, Kathy Christensen, Linda Williams, Marcy Lewandowski, Morgan McCarthy Warda, September Croel, Seth Kenoyer, Tavis Walters, T.J. Logan and several other friends across the industry who helped me dissect the AQHA Handbook and understand the events I was less familiar with. Thank you to everyone who attended the Congress Queen Coronation Ceremony and NYATT Awards. We have an amazing youth association! Thank you to both of our NYATT teams for running over to congratulate me and each give me a hug during the awards ceremony. Additional thanks to April Mazur, Audra Levitte, Bruce and Cindy Walquist and Whitney Walquist-Vicars, Christa Baldwin, Colleen Balmer and Dior, Eva Haron, Jacque Moody, Jolene Beck, Kim Chiodo, Kris Woroneicki and office staff, Kristi Ghekiere, Lindsay Ann Roossien, Lisa Ondersma, Marcy Lewandowski, Megan WilliamsShaw, Michelle and Kimm McDowell, Monty Montgomery, Pam and Tiffany Hooper, Renee Holstege and Totally Outfitted, Renee Kozlowski, Sarah and Melissa Breuker, Stephanie Cline, Stephanie Griffin, Tom Powers, Warren English and family. Last but certainly not least, thank you to every single person who has touched my life even in the smallest way. Every person I have come in contact with has helped me achieve this goal in a unique way. I am excited to travel to many of the major shows this year as an ambassador for the All American Quarter Horse Congress and in turn, the quarter horse industry. Please contact me if you are interested in learning more about the Congress Queen Contest, MQHA Queen Contest, or the quarter horse industry in general. See you at the MQHA Convention in January! Best wishes, Meghan Murphy MQHA Journal • December 2013 • 08

which got people talking about the opportunities MQHA has for the Youth.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: President Waite began by thanking the Summer Series Committee for a very successful Memorial Weekend horse show. She also then went on to report the deep losses to the horse community over the last few days. She first spoke of Walter Bays and his impact on the Quarter Horse Racing industry in Michigan. He will be sadly missed. She then spoke of former MQHA Director, Jim Evans, who passed away early this morning. Since stepping down from the MQHA Board, Jim had maintained a very active position continuing to help with the Stallion Service Sale and the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity. The impact of his loss to our Association will be felt for many years to come.

QUEEN: Kathy Christensen has one queen candidate, Meghan Murphy. Meghan has asked to go through the contest and do the text, the interview and the horsemanship class.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Vice President Weitzel commended the Youth Association on their activities to date. She reviewed the Youth minutes and stated she was impressed with their efforts and congratulated them on their fundraising. OFFICE REPORT: Kris Woroniecki thanked the Summer Series committee for their efforts. The show made a profit this year compared to breaking even last year. The weather cooperated and it was a nice weekend. Kris also reminded the Board that the new bookkeeper has come in for the first time. She hopes to have her up to speed soon. COMMITTEE REPORTS HARBOR CLASSIC: Ted Meyer stated that everything is set for the show. It looks like there will be good attendance. Ted and Mike Sinko will share responsibilities for the show arena. The party is all set. There will be roast pork this year. Everyone is looking forward to the event. MEMBERSHIP/PUBLICITY: Morgan Warda submitted a report to the office via email: I did go to the CMHA show and had three youth volunteer all day with me passing out awards, journals and our flyers from AQHA. We got some questions regarding the new rules about the legal training tools and people were glad to hear about it. It was a great day and we met new people and talked about our shows and what they offer. We also had our youth scrapbook that got lots of attention and everyone was impressed with how well it has done at the World Show,

SUMMER SERIES: Jody Prime stated that the show did well this year. She thanked everyone for their help with it. YOUTH: Youth President, Michelle McDowell explained that the pig roast held at the Summer Series was a huge success, raising about $900 for the Youth. They held a water balloon toss which went over very well. The kids all seemed to have had a lot of fun. Upcoming fundraisers: sponsorships for $20 at the Bujack show, with sponsor names announced throughout the day, approved by show management. Dog races with an entry fee at the Harbor Classic, with baskets containing donated items, for winners of the race. Chris Perniciaro made a motion to approve the upcoming fundraisers. Jacque Moody seconded. Motion passed with none opposed. Michelle explained that she and Youth Advisor, Nicole Veldhoff were at the MQHA office working on the Youth World Show information. She stated that the Youth have raised a little over $5500 with their fundraising efforts so far this year. Michelle requested $4000 of that money to be used to pay for the port-a-cool units, the night watchman and the extra tack stalls. She explained that there should be enough money left, plus additional fundraisers through the rest of the year, to cover the NYATT team and to pay for a party at the end of the year for all of the Youth. Jacque Moody made a motion to allow the Youth to spend $4000 of their fundraising money on expenses for the Youth World Show Team. Chris Perniciaro seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Michelle requested that the board review the April and May Youth conference call minutes that were presented. Chris Perniciaro made a motion to accept the minutes. Taylor Fabus seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. NATIONAL DIRECTOR UPDATE: Chris Baldwin stated that AQHA will be going to court in July about the cloning issue. OFFICE REPORT: Kris Woroniecki explained to the Board that the four judged shows are difficult to announce. The application for the Congress Queen contest is due soon and it will be going out to Ohio QH. Meggen Morrow Baynes

Hello, my name is Meggen Morrow Baynes. I have been a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Michigan Quarter Horse Association for over 15 years. I enjoy showing in the all-around events. I am a graduate of Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. I work as a Registered Nurse at a sub-acute rehabilitation center as well as, a Level 1 trauma hospital. I have a 5 year old daughter that currently shows in the leadline and will hopefully step up to the Small Fry classes soon. I have competed on local and national levels. Showing in many states throughout the country, I can honestly say that the Michigan Quarter Horse Association is one of the strongest, and I would love the opportunity to help make it the BEST!

Warren English Jr

My name is Warren English Jr. I have been on the board for over 6 years. I was the youth advisor for 4 years and for the last two, the chair of the finance committee. I’m 55 years old and have been a member of MQHA for about 13 years. My wife and I have a farm in Sturgis, MI where I’m the official manure manager(I’m told I do this very well). I would like to let everyone know that your association is one of the best in the country, both in the running of shows and the strength of your balance sheet, and the credit belongs to both an active board and the hard work of Kris Woroniecki. Please make sure to attend the annual meeting in January and bring your questions and suggestions! Thanks. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Kathy Christensen

Hi, I am Kathy Christensen. It has been my privilege to represent you, as a MQHA Board Member. I have been a MQHA member for many years and enjoy going to the shows with my horse, An Impulse of Guy. I work for Henry Schein as a Dental Field Consultant and I live in Caledonia. As Chairperson for the MQHA Queen competition, I work diligently to promote our association and our Queen. Congratulations to Meghan Murphy, 2013 All-American Quarter Horse Congress Queen!! I would like to encourage everyone to visit our website for show bills, forms and to view our online MQHA Journal. Please like our MQHA Facebook page! I hope you will re-elect me to the board, and thank you for your support. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the shows!

Megan Hirschman

I have been an active MQHA member and exhibitor for over 13 years and a member of the MQHA Board for 3 years. I show in All-Around events at nearly every show, and have experience supporting and working at Speed, Cutting, Roping and Rodeo events. As a current MQHA Board Member I have strived to keep the exhibitors needs in mind. As the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at MSU, I have experience in both auditing and creating financial documentation, fundraising for nonprofit organizations, and helping support recruiting and membership. I would be honored and appreciate the opportunity to serve on the MQHA Board of Directors again this year with your support. Good luck to all exhibitors in 2014! MQHA Journal • December 2013 • 52

MQHA

Tom Powers Robert Milks I have been a resident of Alma, MI since 2007, having settled there after moving from Canada where I was raised and involved with horses for more years than I will admit. I have shown on open circuits as well as the OQHA circuit in Ontario and crossed the border to show Palomino. Having been heavily involved with the local clubs, I also served a term with MQHA and would like to help the already well qualified board members of MQHA move the association forward. I am a lifetime member of AQHA, MQHA, PHBA and the APHA and in my spare time, I judge horse shows and like to see the youth grow and learn in the equine industry.

Karen Waite My name is Karen Waite and I am serving as the MQHA Board President. I have been a member of AQHA and/or MQHA for 30 years, since I got my first quarter horse at the age of 11. As a youth, I participated in 4H, with the goal of showing on the MQHA circuit. That dream (and many more) came true, with the purchase of AQHA/PHBA mare Dream of a Leaguer, from the Brower family and later, with the purchase of Pretty Much Zipped. With these particular horses, I have shown at many AQHA & MQHA events, including the Congress and AQHA Regional Experience. In 2007, I began judging. I participated in the 2004 Inaugural Leadership AQHA class, which taught me about the inner workings of AQHA, and the relationship between AQHA and affiliates like MQHA. I have also served on the AQHA Region Four Experience committee. MQHA has done so much for me personally, my objective as President is to build on the great work that has been done to showcase the great people and horses that are MQHA. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Horse trainer since 1960. MQ board member on and off for twenty years. Retired Navy and Airline pilot. Manage quarter horse shows and Futurities in Michigan for 33 years. Member of MQHA and NSBA Hall of Fame.

Debbie Wadds Hello...this past year serving on the MQ board has been exciting and a great experience! I have had the pleasure of volunteering on several committees, within the regular Board duties. One of the passions that I have is the Stallion Service Sale, and the Convention. If I am voted back on the Board, I would like to continue to strive with helping, learning and being an attribute to the MQ Board of Directors. Gordy & I have been married for 3 years, and he enjoys going to the meetings with me, and being a part of the committees as well. Our passion for horses, friends, and family is what brings a smile to our faces daily. We thank God everyday to be a part of so many peoples lives and of course horses!!

Tiffany Weitzel My name is Tiffany Weitzel. I have been involved with the MQHA for 8 years, the past 3 as a board member. I am currently serving as the Vice President. I am employed by The Anderson’s as a grain buyer and I am involved in the Michigan Agri Business emerging leaders program. I am a graduate of Albion College and in my free time, besides horses, I love to cook, read, and recently completed a half marathon. I truly believe that MQHA is a leading equine association in our state and in the country and look forward to serving our membership and helping our association grow. Anna Bays TRAVELING MEMORIAL TROPHY The sixteenth presen-tation of the Anna Bays Memorial Trophy was once again held at the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity. I am much honored to make a special presentation on behalf of the many friends of a very special lady. Congratulations once again go to Steve and Kelli Jensen with an unprecedented sixth win as this year’s recipient of the Anna Bays Traveling Memorial Trophy. As was the case last year there was a three way tie for second place and the “tie-breaker” rule had to be utilized. The unnamed colt finished third in the class of nine as Judge “B” was the class tie-breaker. The colt was also third under Judge “A” who is the Anna Bays Trophy tiebreaker and was therefore the weanling to defeat the largest number of horses in his/her open division halter class by a Michigan breeder. As the breeder of this colt, by Kid Coolsified out of Excloosa, exhibited by Mike Sinko, the Jensen’s will once again be able to enjoy the beautiful bronze trophy that honors the memory of Anna Bays. February 8th, 2014 will mark 16 years since the MQHA lost a lifetime member and active breeder when Anna Bays, 92, died when her home in Traverse City caught fire. Anna loved raising her foals and always dreamed of having a futurity winner. Tom Robertson, Jerry Robertson, Jarra Hilliker and Gary Gleason were all trainers that worked for Anna. She shared in a partnership of the stallion SR Ready Conclusion, an own son of Conclusive. Everyone who ever met Anna can tell you how vibrantly she talked about her babies and the Michigan Breeders Futurity. In an effort to honor her memory, many of her friends commissioned sculptor Marrita McMillen, Gainesville, TX to create the bronze trophy which depicts a weanling playfully rearing with a ribbon. The black walnut base has a bronze name plate on the front and individual name plates listing the succession of winners. The trophy is scheduled to travel for twenty years. The winner keeps the actual trophy for one year, and then exchanges it for a commemorative plaque. The award goes to the Michigan breeder whose weanling beats the most horses in his/her halter class in the open division at the MQHBF. Past winners include Ted Lincoln, Phil Cumper, Robert & Terri Wolf, Denise Pucilowski, Lorraine Barrigar, Diane Hyde, Judy and John Van Dyke, Bob Sherman, two time winners Michael & Suzanne Cramer and five time winners Steve & Kelli Jensen. We hope everyone attending the breeders futurity is able to enjoy this beautiful work of art where it is displayed before it is awarded. I can speak for everyone who knew and loved Anna, in saying that I hope that everyone enjoys this memorial trophy as much as we enjoyed Anna. Sincerely, Joan Williams www.MIQuarterHorse.com
