MQHA Happy Holidays everyone! What an incredible year we have had as an association. The Holiday season is often a time of reflection and thanks for many. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Kris Woroniecki and her staff for keeping our association running like clock work. What they do behind the scenes is nothing short of amazing. To all of the board members I’ve had the honor of serving with this past year, thank you for your time and dedication to our association. Last but not least, all of our members and exhibitors, I hope you truly enjoyed your experience with MQHA. As exhibitors we have many choices what association(s) to patronize, and am I thrilled to see our membership and show numbers continue to increase. I hope everyone has a Holiday filled with peace and joy. MQHA President, Tiffany Weitzel

MQHA Happy December MQHA Members! These past few weeks have been a crazy kind of wonderful. Since I last wrote, I was given the opportunity to don my Queen attire for a special moment to pass out ribbons in lead line at the Lisa Terry Memorial show. Later in September, I presented even larger ribbons at the Michigan Quar ter Horse Breeder ’s Futurity. Throughout the Futurity, I managed to become a quick change artist, and met a lot of exhibitors and their talented horses. I laughed a lot with Jadine Bruner from Eye of the Horse Photography, and Barb at the entry gate, where I hope everyone enjoyed those Tootsie Pops! Futurity prepared me for the big one, the All American Quarter Horse Congress. My mom, Val and I arrived in Columbus two days before the start of the Queen competition. We settled in, and I got right to work by passing out vendor gifts, and presenting Congress medallions. The rst class I signed up for, Amateur Hunter Hack, also gave me the chance to meet the Congress Queen herself, Carly Kidner. I was a little star struck at rst, since her smile and crown glittered across the marketing for the Queen’s contest and her boots would certainly be hard to ll. She was very gracious and it was exciting to get to know her over the week to follow.

www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Tuesday evening nally came, and it was time to meet the 20 other contestants, give our brief speeches about our representing associations, and answer an impromptu question. With the rst day of the contest coming to a close, the new, fabulous Queen Team whisked us away to a slumber party. Here we exchanged gifts and determined the orders for the interview and horsemanship portions. At the end, it was entertaining to nd ways to get all of the presents back up to our rooms, with many of the girls stealing luggage carts (Oops!). The following morning our interviews took place with three judges. They were very nice, and well-chosen for this portion, and each judge asked me about four to ve questions. Afterwards, the contestants had lunch together, and a group proceeded back to the grounds to pass out more thank you cards to the vendors. Our rst fashion show rehearsal was held that night, where we were coached on our runway walks. The biggest portion of this competition is, no doubt, the test, and since it was a new Queen Committee, it was hard to know what to expect. I earned 10th place in this category, which I was extremely pleased with, because I will admit, the test was tough. Once the test was completed, we dressed in our western best and headed out for a delicious lunch with Experience Columbus at Hofbrauhaus, which is a popular German restaurant. For dessert, we visited the Krema Nut Factory (the Buckeye Crunch was amazing!) and then nished with a grand tour of Ohio State University’s football stadium. When Friday morning arrived, so did several other things: the last portion of the contest, the Horsemanship, my sister, and our birthday! Being able to spend the day showing my horse, and representing this great

association was a blessing, and one of the best birthday presents a girl could ask for. I got to see and spend some time with some of my favorite Michigan supporters: my mom, sister, Sandy House, Jenna and Dee Manor, Bonnie Bailey, Kathy Christensen, Kay Stanek, Marla Dais, and Pat Dalrick. I would like to give a tremendous thanks to Jody and Troy Prime, who were both an amazing help for last minute coaching and preparation. I earned 5th place in this category, and I could not have been more excited.

The Congress Catwalk for Kids was held on Saturday afternoon in Congress Hall for the rst time ever. We had almost 650 people attend! I had the honor of wearing a gorgeous jacket designed by Cassidy’s Casuals, accompanied by a wonderful young woman named Regan. I felt privileged to meet Regan and her younger sister from Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids, as Regan is 15 years old and has an inoperable brain tumor. We chatted about horses, her goats, and her goals for the future. One of them being to one day, own a horse. She was such a joy to speak to, and really humbled this experience for me and I will always cherish meeting her. That sunny Sunday afternoon, a few ladies donated their time from Paul Mitchell’s MQHA Journal • December 2015 • 4

Beauty School and they provided professional hair and make-up services. I was paired with a duo that made me almost unrecognizable to myself, but amazing. After I slipped into my dress, it was all a blur. We took group photos, and then we were shuttled to the Coliseum, where I would walk down my rst ever red carpet. As mentioned previously, I earned 10th on the test, and 5th in the horsemanship, nishing 12th overall. I would like to congratulate my fellow Queen from Great Lakes Quarter Horse Association, Katie Allen on nishing 6th in the competition. Congratulations, and all my love to the

newly crowned Congress Queen, Lauren Harrington. Best wishes for you and this upcoming year. This entire experience was more than I could have ever hoped for. I am proud and blessed that I was able to represent Michigan this year. I’m looking forward to the months to come, and to the people I have yet to meet. Thank you MQHA members for all of your support throughout this endeavor. I would also like to give a round of applause, and a huge thank you to my sponsors this year: Warren, Laurie, and Corinne English, Jack and Nancy Christensen, Anna Marie Cooper, Millbrook Tack, Lope for Hope and Renee Kozlowski, Bodacious Cowgirl and Wendy Cook, Kathy Williams Tails, Chris Frantz and Chris’ Custom Creations, Tiffany Weitzel, Tom Moore, Wire Horse, Sharon Merchant, Lexi Heny, Mary Beth Hegedus, Jim and Joni Roth, Cowgirl Rocz, Closet Space, Biggby Coffee and Jen Dolby, Cassidy’s Casuals and Brenda Arnold, Audrey Winter and 3M, Jeanne Norcross, Kathy Christensen, Doris Perniciaro, Debbie Wadds, LouAnn Thompson, and Bonnie Bailey.

And of course, how could I not thank you for everything you have done this year, and every year before, Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa. I couldn’t have accomplished any of my dreams without you. Your tireless efforts have made me who I am today. Best Wishes, Andrea E. Armbruster

He has known joy and violence. Felt the warmth of children and the cruelty of abuse. He has nearly died saving lives and merely been killed by a drunken act. He has known the finery of grand estates and the filth of stinking slums. He has survived fire and flood, starvation and torment. And nothing could break his spirit-or his great love. This is HIS life. He is called the horse. – Anna Sewell www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Anna Bays Traveling Memorial Trophy The 18th presentation of the Anna Bays Memorial Trophy was once again held at the MQHA Breeders Futurity this past September. I am truly honored to make a special presentation on behalf of the many friends of a very special lady. Congratulations go to Steve & Kelli Jensen, with an unprecedented 7th win as this years recipient of the Anna Bays Memorial Trophy. Over the course of the year’s presenting this trophy, I have twice used the tie-breaker rule within a class. For the 2nd year in a row the same breeder won both the filly and colt class. This year was different however as there was the same number of weanlings in each Congratulations to class. In an absolute tie, TF Bullet Proof sired by Kid Coolsified and out of the dam Lindy’s Little Steve & Kelli Jensen! Secret won his open colt class and Sheez Unforgettable sired by Ecredible and out of the dam TF Unforgettable won her open filly class, both weanlings were exhibited by Rick Leek. As the breeder of both these weanlings, Steve & Kelli Jensen will be able to enjoy the beautiful bronze trophy that honors the memory of Anna Bays. February 8, 2016 will mark 18 years since MQHA has lost a lifetime member and active breeder when Anna Bays, 92, perished when her home in Traverse City caught fire. Anna loved raising her foals and always dreamed of having a futurity winner. Tom Robertson, Jerry Robertson, Jarra Hilliker and Gary Gleason were all trainers that worked for Anna. She shared in a partnership of the stallion SR Ready Conclusion, an own son of Conclusive. Everyone who ever met Anna can tell you how vibrantly she talked about her babies and the Michigan Breeders Futurity. In an effort to honor her memory, many of her friends commissioned sculptor Marrita Black of Gainesville, TX to create the bronze trophy which depicts a weanling playfully rearing with a ribbon. The black walnut base has a bronze nameplate on the front and individual nameplates listing the succession of winners. The trophy is scheduled to travel for twenty years. The winner keeps the actual trophy for one year, and then exchanges it for a commemorative plaque. The award goes to the Michigan breeder whose weanling beats the most horses in his/her halter class in the open division at the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity. We hope everyone who attended this years breeders futurity was able to enjoy this beautiful work of art where it is displayed before it is awarded. I can speak for everyone who knew and loved Anna, in saying that I hope that everyone enjoys this memorial trophy as much as we enjoyed Anna. Sincerely, Joan Williams

MQHA MICHIGAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION Meeting of the Board of Directors August 11, 2015 Meeting Minutes President Tiffany Weitzel called a meeting of the MQHA Board of Directors to order at 7:06 p.m. at the MSU Pavilion, East Lansing, MI. The following Directors and staff were present: Christa Baldwin, Trevor Barnes, Meggen Baynes, Kelly Chapman, Taylor Fabus, Sasha Glover, Monty Montgomery, Jacque Moody, Tom Powers, Mike Sinko, Cathy Thaler, Morgan Warda, Tiffany Weitzel and Kris Woroniecki. Excused were: Kathy Christensen, Warren English, Jill Finley, Megan Hirschman, Bob Milks, Chris Perniciaro, Nicole Veldhoff, and Debbie Wadds. President Weitzel welcomed the guests in attendance. AGENDA: Tom Powers made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. Morgan Warda seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. MEMBER COMMENT: Guest and MQHA member Jeff West expressed his concern that MQHYA is not a 501C3. He expressed that with a change of tax status, people could write donations off and that would encourage donations for the Youth Association. MINUTES: Monty Montgomery made a motion to accept the June 9, 2015 Board of Directors minutes. Trevor Barnes seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Kris Woroniecki presented the financial statement for the period ending June, 2015. The total assets of the Association as of June 30, 2015 are listed at $383,713.20; the total liabilities at $137,550.45 and the total members' equity is listed at $246,162.75. The net income as of the end of June is listed at $66,490.47 compared to $42,083.97 for the same period in 2014. A motion to approve the June, 2015 statement was made by Tom Powers. Mike Sinko seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kris Woroniecki also presented the financial statement for the period ending July, 2015. The total assets of the Association as of July 31, 2015 are listed at $402,765.42; the total liabilities at $138,911.93 and the total members' equity listed at $263,853.49. The net income as of the end of July is listed at $84,181.21 compared to $50,113.12 for the same period in 2014. A motion to approve the July, 2015 statement was made by Morgan Warda. Sasha Glover seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. TREASURER'S REPORT: Kris Woroniecki presented the check detail report showing all checks written for June, 2015. Taylor Fabus made a motion to accept the check detail report for June. Cathy Thaler seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kris then presented the check detail report showing all checks written www.MIQuarterHorse.com

for July, 2015. Cathy Thaler made a motion to accept the check detail report for July. Meggen Baynes seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kris Woroniecki presented the accounts payable and accounts receivable report. After review, Sasha Glover made a motion to accept the receivables and payables report. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: President Weitzel stated that the President's message is back in the journal and she hopes to have one for each issue. She also thanked all of the Harbor Classic committee members, helpers, and volunteers for help make such a large show a success. Cathy Thaler had brought up some concerns about the office staff and operating procedures. President Weitzel reported that many processes have been implemented but might not be evident to everyone. The office staff members have keys to the office and the building owner can access the space as well. The PO Box key is easily accessible within the office. All office staff can get into the computers at the office and the current staff along with many other horse show secretaries can get into the horse show management software. There is a removable backup disk stored in the fire safe and the bookkeeper has a monthly backup of Quickbooks off site. Cathy Thaler requested to have those procedures typed up and distributed to current and new board members for their reference. Kris Woroniecki asked the board if there were other practices that they wished to see implemented. Board members requested that the Association look into training for the Horse Show Management software to get the accounting module working to accommodate our shows. Discussion included the fact that we have a lot of variables that will make it more difficult to use the finance software, including the $1500 Prepaid horse show program and the member discount. Bob Milks and Tom Powers will look into estimate for training. President Weitzel also made the recommendation to move the show office to one of the larger classrooms to allow less distractions and more room. Kris agreed to move the show office for the Harvest Classic. VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Vice President Moody congratulated the entire youth team on their success at the AQHYA World Show. As part of her report she asked Youth President, Sasha Glover to read his youth report. After the reading of Sasha's report, she reiterated that one of the three major goals set by the board at the beginning of the year was for a more cohesive partnership and she said that Sasha's report summarized that goal. Submitted by Sasha Glover, Youth President: Recently I had the experience of attending the AQHYA World Show with our Michigan team. Many of you know the level of prestige this show is. I was very excited to attend. Not ever attending this show or Congress as an exhibitor or guest I

didn't know truly what to expect, except that I was always told how special this show truly was. The first night I arrived, I walked past the tunnel into the arena and as many of you know that have had the opportunity to attend, there is a specific saying the hangs across that tunnel; "Gateway Of Champions." This specific saying summarized the entire show and trip not only for me but I believe every youth member that attended. Regardless of what you went in with or came out with, every person that walked through that tunnel was a champion. Anyone that attended that show was a champion. Not only is a champion defined as someone that wins but as someone who is a successful leader, role model, and puts forth their best effort. I am pleased to report that I can say without any hesitation our Michigan kids were not just champions in the pen but outside as well. Participating in the parade of teams reminded me and many others why we choose to be part of AQHA and MQHYA. Those reasons include meeting and growing our connections with members in our own state and outside of our own state. Knowing that regardless if a rider comes out of that pen with a world winner or no ribbon at all, you will get congratulation from many, and most importantly we are all there for the same purpose which is the purpose of growing and bettering ourselves as individuals. Seeing members that aren't even from the same state give hugs in the pen and see them high five truly showed that purpose and connection. At one point one of our own team member's fell ill and was taken to the hospital. Because of the care and compassion for one another, attention was directed to ensure she was taken care of and family back home was constantly updated. To me that spoke volumes. The team had a very successful show and certainly grew as a team and individually. We had many members make it further then their initial split. We also were lucky enough to have a success outside of the pen by winning 4th place in the scrapbook contest! I would personally like to thank the West Family for taking care of the hospitality stall along with assisting as acting advisors, ensuring our team was checked in and notified correctly. Thank you Amy Stark for acting as advisor, and ensuring everything ran smoothly. Thank you to Christa Baldwin and Kelley Chapman for your continued assistance throughout the entire show and wealth of knowledge. Last and certainly not least, a huge thank you should be extended to all parents and trainers that attended. Our youth can only be as strong as the individuals that guide them. If there is truly one thing I brought home and ask you to think about it is this - why we do what we do and what the true importance and impact is not only for ourselves but for those around us. OFFICE REPORT: Kris Woroniecki reported that former office staff member Aschelle Vanzandt has resigned. Kris reported that she is currently looking for a new staff member and has a new MQHA Journal • December 2015 • 40

August 11, 2015 Meeting Minutes, continued. individual starting soon. The MQHA office was contacted by Trish Steele, Midland Fair Manager. Midland has Memorial Weekend available with a few stipulations. The issue was discussed amongst the board members. There is concern about the arena footing in Allegan, but the consensus was that the Board would like to remain in Allegan if they can get the footing corrected. Kris Woroniecki will contact the Allegan County Fairgrounds manager to discuss the possibility of having them work on the footing. Several Board members offered ideas for people who might be able to help. Kris will respond to the Board with the status of the conversation. COMMITTEE REPORTS FINANCE REPORT: Kris Woroniecki presented breakdown of the following events: Tack Sale, Easter Show, and Youth Spartan Spectacular Show. The February shows were pulled apart, with two judges added the Easter show and one judge added to the Spartan Spectacular. Kris had explained that once all the events were closed out in the books, she would run a comparison to show if the decision appeared to be a good one or not. The detail showed that all three events were up from 2014. The tack sale was larger by 46 spaces, the Easter show was up by 20 stalls and over 2,000 entries and the Spartan Spectacular was up by 60 stalls and 1400 entries. The overall profit between the three events was up, although the overall profit for the tack sale alone was down, due to the fact that the tack sale had to cover the entire cost of the venue instead of sharing the cost with the February horse show. The Board had agreed to look this information over to determine if moving the three horse shows from February was a good move for both the membership and the association. It was determined that it was a good decision and 2016 will run the same. CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS COMMITTEE: (Board action for that item in bold beneath discussion point) Respectfully Submitted By Cathy Thaler, Constitution and By-Laws Committee Chair: The committee met at the Harbor Classic Show in Ludington on July 4th. Committee members present: Cathy Thaler, Tiffany Weitzel, and Jacque Moody. Past Michigan and National AQHA president, Ken Mumy, also participated in the meeting. After much discussion, Ken encouraged us to go forward with a plan for the continuity of our organization's goals and objectives, and said that AQHA would be happy to hear that we are tackling major issues regarding the structure, mission and goals of the organization since MQHA has grown to the point that restructuring after 60 years make a lot of sense. As we reviewed and studied the constitution, bylaws, and rules, some issues have come to light concerning succession management, our mission and plan to support it, and internal www.MIQuarterHorse.com

controls to protect the organization's fiscal and administrative health. This is not a process to be completed exclusively by this committee, but to be inclusive of the entire board and membership. In addition, we believe that the process should be entirely transparent and provide a “level playing field” for all involved. Ken suggests that the board hire an independent facilitator to lead the board in the process; but that can be discussed later date. The priority for us now is to make some positive changes that will begin the process. We would like the board to approve the changes listed below so that we can get the information to the membership for a vote in time to allow our changes to be in effect for the January election. The following are the proposed changes that we recommend submitting to the general membership for vote so that the board structure changes effective with the Annual Membership meeting: 1. To make changes to the board clean and efficient, for 2016 we propose that we start fresh and all board members must go through the election process no matter at what point they are in their current term. Trevor Barnes made a motion to accept item 1 of the proposed change to the Constitution. Motion was seconded by Morgan Warda. Motion passed with Fabus opposed. Trevor Barnes made a motion to rescind his motion to accept item 1 of the proposed change to the Constitution. Motion to recind was seconded by Cathy Thaler. Motion passed with none opposed. 2. To run for office, be a board member, run for queen or participate on any team remove requirement to be a Michigan resident as long as the member meets all other eligibility requirements. (Article IV, Section 1, and in Rules for Queen and Youth sections). Taylor Fabus made a motion to strike item 2 from the Constitution and Bylaws changes. Motion was seconded by Meggen Baynes. Motion passed with none opposed. 3. Article II, Section 2 remove references to fees and the Journal option for Youth Member-ships as no other fees are listed in this section. Trevor Barnes made a motion to accept item 3 from Constitution and Bylaws changes. Motion was seconded by Monty Mont-gomery. Motion passed with none opposed. 4. Article II, Section 4 remove word “monthly” when referring to the Journal. Sasha Glover made a motion to accept item 4 from the Constitution and Bylaws changes. Motion was seconded by Taylor Fabus. Motion passed with none opposed. 5. Article III, Section 1 change number of directors on the board to 12. Eight of the board members will serve terms based on votes received - the top 4 vote-getters will serve terms of 3 years, the next 3 top vote-getters will serve terms of 2 years, and the next top vote-getter will serve a term of 1 year. National directors and the

youth board president will be encouraged to attend board meetings to participate, stay abreast of activities and make reports to the board, but will no longer be board members. Taylor Fabus made a motion to create an Executive committee consisting of four positions, which would be President, Vice President, Vice President Elect and the Treasurer. Christa Baldwin seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Taylor Fabus made a motion that the four Executive Committee position be elected by the outgoing board members. The election will supersede the term limits. Trevor seconded the motion. Thaler, Fabus, and Barnes voted for the motion. All others voted against. Motion did not pass. Christa Baldwin motioned to that by 2018, the MQHA Board of Directors will consist of 13 board members with 12 elected positions and the one appointed Youth President. Kelly Chapman seconded the motion. Motion passed with Fabus opposed. Taylor Fabus made a motion to not fill two director positions each year to attain the 13 director positions by 2018. Resigned positions will not be filled up to six spots. Chris Baldwin seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. 6. Article III, Section 2 change heading to “Eligibility” to match officers Article IV, Section 1. Taylor Fabus made a motion to accept this change. Meggen Baynes seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. 7. Article III, Section 4 change quorum to seven which must include at least two officers. 8. Also Article III Section 4, Duties - remove ability to cast a vote by telephone or email to make a quorum. 9. Article III, Section 5 change Absenteeism policy to read: A Director who has had two (2) or more un-excused absences during the course of the business year will lose his/her Directorship and will be replaced as outlined in Section 3 of this Article. Excused Absences: In the case of illness of self or death of family member this rule will be waived. The Executive Secretary must be notified no later than the morning of a scheduled meeting to allow for cancellation if there will not be a quorum. A Director may request in writing an exception to this rule and may be granted by the Board if it so chooses. 10. Article III, Section 6 remove “rave” from authority. 11. Article III, Section 7 change to read: An adhoc Advisory Board to the Michigan Quarter Horse Association Board of Directors will consist of all past presidents. 12. Article IV, Section 1 remove the “exception” statement. 13. Article IV, Section 2 rename “Officers and Executive Committee,” and change wording to “the Officers and Executive Committee of the MQHA Journal • December 2015 • 41

MQHA August 11, 2015 Meeting Minutes, continued Association shall be the President, Vice President Elect, Vice President, and Treasurer.” See the following explanation: These positions will all be elected by the general membership. The president, president elect and vice president positions would be one year terms and provide for succession management as follows: o The positions are voted on by the membership. o Each position is for 1 year. o After 1 year, the vice president elect becomes the president and the vice president becomes the vice president elect. A new vice president is elected by the membership. o To run from vice president one must have served at least two years on the board. o When the president's term ends they need to run for a board position to fill one of the vacancies if they want to remain on the board. o All persons wishing to run for office must submit a letter of intent to be on the ballet. 14. Article IV, Section 3 add same verbiage to president section as in Section 4 15. Article IV, Section 4 change officer title to Vice President Elect and all references to title change

throughout section. 16. Article IV, Section 5 change to a section on the Vice President 17. Article IV, Section 6 change title and description to that of Treasurer. The executive secretary will no longer be an officer of the board. The treasurer will be a voting officer of the board that will be elected by the membership and will be the chair of the Finance Committee. Make change to job description to reflect the change. 18. Number remaining sections to correspond with changes. (i.e. current section 6 to section 7, section 7 to section 8, section 8 to section 9, and section 9 to section 10.) 19. New section 7 “Officers or Employees” remove the word “Employees” heading and “or employees” from the first line. 20. Article V, Section 1 - End first sentence after “good standing.” Move description of nominating committee to committee description section. 21. Article V create new sections and revise and renumber existing per new voting and terms as described above. 22. Article V, Section 5 change “Roll Call of Officers” to “Roll Call of Officers and Directors.” 23. Article V, Section 5 in Annual Membership Meeting sections change last bullet point to read “Announcement and installation into office of new President, Vice President Elect, Vice President, and Treasurer.

Although these changes do not complete the review and proposed changes to the remaining portion of the Constitution and Rules, they will give us a substantial jump-start in our quest to reorganize. At 10:30 p.m., Monty Montgomery made a motion that the September 8, 2015 Board meeting be changed from a conference call to a face to face meeting at the Pavilion in an attempt to finish reviewing the proposed Rules and Constitution changes. Tom Powers seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. President Weitzel will likely amend the agenda for the September meeting. The Executive secretary/ treasurer explained that she will not be available to attend this meeting however will be available via phone if needed. A motion to adjourn was made at 10:35 p.m. by unanimous consent without objection. ELECTRONIC BOARD CORRESPONDENCE: MQHA rules now allow for electronic voting when necessary. Any information voted on electronically between meetings will be recorded on the next set of minutes in this section: NEXT MEETING: September 8, 2015 at 7:00 PM at MSU Pavilion, East Lansing.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING JANUARY 10, 2016 Held at the Annual MQHA Convention!

MQHA Hello everyone! I hope that you all had a great season, but do not worry, because the next season is just around the corner. Keep your eyes open for the New Letter Of Intent for the 2016 World Show and NYATT teams. The MQHA youth will be looking for sponsors to help support the youth association activities. These sponsorships will allow the youth to attend the Youth World Show and to participate on the All American Quarter Horse Congress NYATT team, with little to no expense. Sponsorships can be accepted at any level of donation, all come with advertising, and many other benets to thank you, the donor for your generosity. The youth will be selling rafe tickets with the chance to win $1,000 in prize money. The drawing for the rafe will be held at the Harbor Classic Show in July, 2016. Any youth member can sell tickets, you do not have to plan on being on a team to participate. Tickets are $5 dollars each and anyone who buys a ticket, could win $1,000 dollars! We will be selling tickets earlier this year than last so everyone has more time to sell and buy tickets. The MQHYA Spartan Spectacular Show in May of 2016 will be hosting the Thayne Miner Memorial Horsemanship class. Any MQHYA member can enter on any horse they want and it’s a free class. Congratulations to everyone that won high point awards and reserve high point awards for the end of the year. Thank you all for a great year with many more to come. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: President Weitzel thanked all the board members that came to the meeting. She said that she appreciated their flexibility in changing this meeting from a conference call to a face to face meeting. She reminded everyone that this meeting would pick up where the August meeting left off so there wouldn't be a lot of the standard reports in order to get back to the Constitutional Rule Changes. VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT: No report. COMMITTEE REPORTS MEMBERSHIP: Morgan Warda reported that she had emailed the Ranch Horse Association to see if they would be interested in partnering with MQHA. Tom Powers advised that there might be a possible fee. He complimented the Ranch Horse idea and also advised that it is judged completely differently than normal MQHA classes. Ted Meyer is feeling better and will be assisting with the hospitality area and judges room. Debbie Wadds shared that she had some sponsorships for the show. Glover also thanked Taylor Fabus for the opportunity to partner up with the Michigan State Judging Team to sell mums. Youth Advisor, Nicole Veldhoff also reported that there are four girls that will be on the NYATT team this year. The team will consist of Hayley Giamo, Audrey Barnes, Katherine West, and Catherine Tata. Nicole is arranging a conference call on Sept. 10 to go over details. As we reviewed and studied the constitution, by-laws, and rules, some issues have come to light concerning succession management, our mission and plans to support it, and internal controls to protect the organization's fiscal and administrative health. This is not a process to be completed exclusively by this committee, but to be inclusive of the entire board and membership. In addition, we believe that the process should be entirely transparent and provide a “level playing field” for all involved. Ken suggests that the board hire an independent facilitator to lead the board in the process; but can be discussed at a later date. The priority for us now is to make some positive changes that will begin the process. We would

like the board to approve the changes listed below so that we can get the information to the membership for a vote in time to allow our changes to be in effect for the January election. The following are the proposed changes that we recommend sub-mitting to the general membership for vote so that the board structure changes effective with the Annual Membership meeting: 1. (Article IV, Section 1, and in Rules for Queen and Youth sections). 3. Article II, Sect. 2 remove references to fees and the Journal option for Youth Memberships as no other fees are listed in this section. 4. Article II, Section 4 remove word “monthly” when referring to the Journal. 5. Article III, Section 1 change number of directors on the board to 12. Eight of the board members will serve terms based on votes received - the top 4 vote-getters will serve terms of 3 years, the next 3 top vote-getters will serve terms of 2 years, and the next top votegetter will serve a term of 1 year. National directors and the youth board president will be encouraged to attend board meetings to participate, stay abreast of activities and make reports to the board, but will no longer be board members. 6. MQHYA by Kodi O’Boyle

Sasha Glover

This month’s Youth Spotlight is about Sasha Glover. He is from the small town of Webberville, and is currently a sophomore at Lansing Community College. He has had the pleasure of being with Michigan Quarter Horse Association (MQHA) for the past ve years. Sasha remembers when past President Jennifer Goss brought him to his rst MQHA horse show because he was interested in what went on at the shows. Ever since then, Sasha could not stay away from the horse shows. He has been riding since the age of eight under the guidance of Christie Showerman at Northfork Farms. Even though Sasha decided not to take his riding career to the show pen, he has always liked the atmosphere surrounding the MQHA horse shows. Sasha became involved in the Michigan Quarter Horse Youth Association (MQHYA) a few years ago. He has served as the MQHYA Reporter, Vice President, and this year, President. He is continuously reminded of why he chose to be part of this wonderful association. The memories and friendships that Sasha has had the opportunities to make are those of a lifetime. As his youth career ends, he is truly looking forward to continuing his support and friendship with all of the great people of the MQHA and MQHYA.

The Michigan Quarter Horse Youth Association Board of Directors would like to THANK YOU for a great year! Without everyone’s continued support and encouragement, we would not have been able to accomplish all that we have. Congratulations to all exhibitors and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2016!

Merry Christmas

Happy New Year

My name is Sasha Glover, and I am from Webberville, MI. I am currently a sophomore attending Lansing Community College and looking to major in travel and tourism. I look forward to being able to work with the great members that make up this great association!

Hi, I’m Mary Beth Hegedus. I have owned, bred and raised Quar ter Horses for over 30 years. After showing at open shows with my sisters and daughters, I began showing at MQ about 5 years ago. I’ve enjoyed the challenge of the competition and have made many new friends. I am employed at Great Lakes Dental as the Practice Administrator where I take care of human resources and bookkeeping. I also train other dental practices on practice management software throughout Michigan and the Midwest. I have been active with the Muskegon County 4-H program serving as treasurer of both the Horse Developmental and Muskegon County Fair Horse Committee. I have also been the Points and Registration Superintendent for the fair several years. I have coached the local judging team and my daughters MIHA team. As treasurer of the MQHA organization, I believe I can bring my skills in human resources and knowledge of running a show in evaluating the employees of the MQ ofce. I also have a solid background in understanding the business end of the nancial duties as treasurer. I am a computer and math geek – evaluating statistical analysis of shows and membership numbers in fascinating to me. I have done several meetings via the web with other organizations which can help fellow board members save on travel time for future meetings. Most importantly, I have a positive – no drama – attitude. I am very grateful for how the MQ organization has been run in the past through the volunteer network. I believe in giving back and volunteering as well. I appreciate your vote on to the board.

MICHIGAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION

2016 BOARD OF DIRECTOR CANDIDATES Ted Meyer

Monty Montgomery

Hi, I am Ted Meyer. I have been a previous MQHA board member from 2006-2014. I have missed not being on the board and being involved in the MQHA. Some of you may know me, and may have seen me hanging around the popcorn machine at the Breeders’ Futurities (making sure the popcorn was kept full) or making preparations for the exhibitor meals at the Breeders’ Futurity and the Harbor Classic shows. I have been off the board for a year, and I truly miss the MQHA arena. MQHA is an association that I am proud to represent and I would consider it an honor to be able to represent the members of this association. I take this responsibility seriously. I do attend most meetings, and I believe that the committees I am appointed to be taken seriously. I make every effort to put in 100% to those committees.

I have been on the board of directors for the past 8 years. I have served on the convention and futurity committees, as well as being the chairperson for the Easter show and year end awards. We are continually working towards making the Easter show bigger and better. The same is true with the awards, which is a challenge as we face the addition of classes and divisions. I have enjoyed serving on the board and trying to make a positive impact on MQ projects I have worked on and hope to continue in the future.

Jacque Moody Hi, I’m Jacque Moody and I have served on the MQHA Board since 2006. Over the years I have served as chair of the nance committee; cochair of the Harbor Classic, and have been chair of the Futurity committee for 5 years. In 2015, I became Vice President. Our current President, Tiffany Weitzel, myself and the current Board have strived to bring about positive changes for our members and the association. Professionally, I am a nancial advisor and principal of Pence Wealth Management with ofces in Newport Beach, CA and Livonia, MI. My family has been involved with MQHA for over 40 years through breeding, showing and training. I currently show in Novice and Select western classes with my horse, Amble With Potential.

MICHIGAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION

2016 BOARD OF DIRECTOR CANDIDATES Morgan Warda

Debbie Wadds

My name is Morgan McCarthy Warda. I am 22 years old and attend the University of Michigan-Flint. I have been on the MQHA Board for the past 3 years and have served as the chairman of the Membership/ Promotions committee. I am also a past President and Secretary of the MQHYA Board. The youth association is a passion of mine and it will continue to be something I support as they grow and learn. While I am actively showing the MQHA circuit, I have also gained knowledge on what our members want and hope to continue working to serve them as a board member. Thank you for supporting the MQHA!

Hello! I have served on the MQ Board of Directors and have contributed in many positive ways. I am prepared to offer my talents of planning, listening, help/manage with other member ideas that are best for the organization. I also have enjoyed being on several committees throughout the year. Helping with the MQ Queen’s contest by gathering donations, offering moral support and being a part of the interview process this year has been great! Our convention is right around the corner and I have been on that committee for several years. I have enjoyed supporting and promoting the Stallion Service Sale for many years in the weanling halter classes, the longe line and the 2 year old western pleasures. The Stallion Service Sale is a great avenue for stallion and mare owners to promote their offspring, and acquire a breeding at the annual MQ Convention Stallion Service Sale. I love, love to show at the MQ shows and have been able to show as a rookie this year. I am asking for your vote to be a continuing voice at our meetings, and engaging in your concerns, to make a very successful organization even better.

Jeff West My family and I have been heavily involved with the MQHA and its shows and activities since 2011. This past year I served as a volunteer and helped the ofce staff with show management tasks and the Youth Association. My twin daughters are members and Directors of the MQHYA. Based on their involvement in the MQHYA and AQHYA activities, I feel both the MQHA and MQHYA have a lot to offer our young people. In addition to show activities, the MQHYA and AQHYA can provide wonderful leadership and scholarship possibilities as well as social opportunities for Michigan Youth. I think it is important to develop our young people and to provide learning experiences for them. As a Director, I would be par ticularly interested in working with the Youth Association and providing guidance to them through their many activities such as regular membership meetings, fundraising, the NYATT and World Show Teams, and assisting with shows. I currently serve on the Williamston Community Schools Board of Education as Vice President, as well as being involved with the youth basketball programs. I am excited for the chance to bring my leadership and planning skills to the MQHA Board of Directors. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Tiffany Weitzel Thanks for taking the time to vote for your 2016 MQ Board of Directors! I have been actively showing MQHA shows for the last 10 years and serving as a board member for six years. Two of those years I was the Vice President and this past year I was President. My goals as President are to get more members involved on our committees and continue to make MQ shows the best afliate shows in the country. This past year, we have started to revise our rules and constitution, which has not been thoroughly done in over thirty years. We plan to nish that process in 2016. We’ve also undertaken the task of reducing the number of directors serving on the board to increase efciency. Outside of MQ I love to cook, enjoy running biking and hiking.
