AGENDA: Megan Hirschman made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. Jody Prime seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. MINUTES: Kathy Christensen made a motion to accept the April 17, 2012 Board of Directors minutes. Megan Hirschman seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. English abstained. REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Warren English presented the financial statement for the period ending April 30, 2012. The total assets of the Association as of April 30, 2012 are listed at $275,414.81; the total liabilities at $154,661.02, and the total members' equity is listed at $120,753.79. The net income as of the end of April is listed at $35,207.06 compared to $14,594.75 for the same period in 2011. Kathy Christensen made a motion to approve the April, 2012 financial statement. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Warren reminded everyone that the substantial increase in revenue was related to good horse shows and good weather. TREASURER'S REPORT: The check detail report for April for the general and special event checking accounts was presented to the Board by Kristie Woroniecki. After review, Kim Chiodo made a motion to accept the report as presented. MacKenzie Kastl seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kristie then presented the accounts payable and receivable reports. Kristie reported that one account was invoiced in September, 2011 and per instructions from the Board in March, the $50 will be written off. Megan Hirschman made a motion to accept the report and Kathy Christensen seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: President Steele stated that she was thrilled to be able to spend the weekend with everyone at the show. She worked the gate and as a ring steward. She was pleasantly surprised to see many new people. She said that many of them thanked her for a well run event. She said that many of the new people mentioned that they were learning how the shows run, where to go for help and they also said they had a great time. She reminded the board that the shows are some of our best revenue generators for the year. VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT: no report OFFICE REPORT: no report COMMITTEE REPORTS FINANCE: Warren English stated we are having a really good year. He reminded everyone that a lot of that had to do with the good weather we have experienced thus far. Warren also explained that our last certificate of deposit was cashed in and put in the savings account. The rates on the certificates of deposit have been really low and we are not getting any more interest than a regular savings account. Warren would like to start looking at some options for investing the money in some low risk areas. After discussion, it was decided that Warren would gather some information from investment people and pass it on to the Board for a decision about an investment plan in near future. Warren stated that he and Trish participated in an internal controls evaluation. They came to the office and went through a check list. The Finance committee is working to verify that the office is handling things correctly and that the Board is overseeing to be sure things are being done right. The results of the accountin4g practices will be sent out to the Board. Warren will answer any questions and concerns about the information. Warren also stated that the Finance committee is working to prepare for the change to a new schedule of holding the year end review every third year. HARVEST CLASSIC: Kim Chiodo stated that she is working on the high point awards. The show committee will be looking for workers for the weekend event. We will need four ring stewards each day. She is also working on the patterns for the event so that they can eventually be posted on Facebook. JOURNAL: MacKenzie Kastl compiled a summary for the March/April MQHA Journal. It was produced to 44 pages. The issue did produce a profit of $1200 primarily from recharges and advertising sales. The Journal is now available online. The committee will continue to monitor all of the changes. QUEEN: Kathy Christensen stated that she has queen's crown and the buckle. She has one candidate confirmed. She is working on getting contribution commitments. SUMMER SERIES: Jody Prime stated that the Committee is ready to go for the Memorial weekend show. No rain is allowed! There are about 170 stalls confirmed right now. A decision on the number of portable stalls will need to be made this week for
www.MIQuarterHorse.com
delivery early next week. A truck full of bedding will be delivered to the grounds with provisions made by the committee for left over bedding. There is a food vendor contracted. The schedule is set up for two split combined shows. There is still a need for ring stewards. Awards have been ordered and the committee decided to do a variety of horse related products. Patterns will be chosen and put on Facebook. The high point awards will be vests purchased from Western Accents with the new MQHA design on them. YOUTH: Morgan Warda reported that the youth hope to do a fundraiser at the Allegan show. She will get with the MQHA office once it is decided what will be done. Wendy cook stated that she has reviewed the Letters of Intent. There looks like there will be great representation with even some over fence exhibitors as well as reiners. The core events are well covered. The Youth are working on finalizing the World Team info. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: 2012 Budget – Megan Hirschman asked that a note be made in the minutes that the budget changes will be sent out in an email for the Board to approve. Marketing of MQHA – Warren stated that he would like to get a handle on promotion of MQHA. Membership income is minimal compared to the revenue that the horse shows bring in. The MQHA mission statement is very broad and he asked for direction from the Board regarding the priority of promotion and marketing. Warren will send the Board information on such a marketing position and see if the board is interested in budgeting for the position. Megan Hirschman made a motion to evaluate adding someone to the staff in a position focused on marketing the shows as a priority. Warren seconded the motion. Executive Secretary Review – Kristie Woroniecki left the call for discussion regarding the compensation request. A motion was made by Megan Hirschman to approve a cost of living increase of 3% effective April, 2012. Kathy Christensen seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. A motion to adjourn was made at 8:15 p.m. by unanimous consent without objection. ELECTRONIC BOARD CORRESPONDENCE: MQHA rules now allow for electronic voting when necessary. Any information voted on electronically between meetings will be recorded on the next set of minutes in this section: NEXT MEETING: There is no June meeting. The next meeting will be Tuesday, July 24 at 7:00 at the MSU Pavilion, Classroom A.

2012 MQHA QUEEN
Meghan Murphy Hi, my name is Meghan Murphy; I am honored to be the 2012 Michigan Quarter Horse Queen. I am excited to represent Michigan in the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen's Contest and really looking forward to this special opportunity to serve the Quarter Horse industry this year. I am 22 years old and from St. Clair, Michigan. I have been actively involved in the horse industry my entire life. My mother grew up riding and showing horses and introduced me to them at a very young age. It was merely natural for me to immediately fall in love with horses and share with my mother the same passion for riding and showing. I have had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities in the horse industry. In addition to show accomplishments that include an All American Quarter Horse Congress Championship, an NSBA Reserve World Championship, and many MQHA accolades, I participated in horse judging teams, and held board member positions including a former position as the MQHYA Vice President. I represented MQHYA numerous years in a row at the AQHA Youth Excellence Seminar in Amarillo, TX and also have participated on MQHA's NYATT and Youth World Show Teams. And recently, I completed four years of participation with a collegiate equestrian team. I graduated from St. Clair High School in 2008. I recently finished my senior year at Baylor University in Waco, TX, where I competed on Baylor's NCAA Equestrian Team for four years. In my four years at Baylor, I was honored to be a four-year varsity letter winner, and named to the Academic All-American Team; First Team. Additionally, many consecutive times named to the Academic All-Big XII Team; First team, the Big XII Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Dean's List. In 2010, my sophomore year, we won the Big XII Championship and in April of 2012, my senior year, we won the Hunter Seat National Championship. I completed my final year on the Baylor Equestrian Team in April 2012. I studied Communications with www.MIQuarterHorse.com
a major in Communication Specialist as well as a double minor in Nonprofit Studies and in Public Relations. I am an intern with Baylor University Development and will receive my Bachelor of Arts Degree in December 2012. In addition to my passion for horses, I enjoy playing tennis, traveling, and volunteering. I have had the opportunity to study Spanish in Argentina and Communications in London. Additionally, I have had special opportunities to be involved with nonprofit organizations and giving back to others. In the past year, I have gone on two mission trips to Kenya with Baylor University where I found another passion of mine for service and helping others. It is a privilege and long-time dream of mine to serve as the Michigan Quarter Horse Queen and compete for the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen title. My first visit to the All American Quarter Horse Congress was at the age of nine and it is a vivid memory of mine. It was an incredible experience for me, it was when I had first learned of the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen, and it was where a dream of mine began. I am grateful for this opportunity to give back to an industry that has provided so many opportunities for me. I would like to give a special thank you to everyone who has been a part of my experience thus far. I cannot express how much I appreciate each and every single one of you who has provided me with support, guidance, friendship, inspiration, and advice. Thank you to all of the sponsors of the 2012 Michigan Quarter Horse Queen: Spartan Stores and Jeanne Norcross, Kathy Christensen, Cassidy's Casuals and Brenda Arnold, Marybeth Hegedus, Thomas Farms, Lope For Hope and Renee Kozlowski, 3M and Audrey Winter, Procter & Gamble and Linda Miller, Bodacious Cowgirl and Wendy Cook, Millbrook Tack, Warren, Laurie and Corinne English, Corlinda Huffman, Jim and Joni Roth, Colleen and Haley Giamo, Western Accents, Fashions by Holly Taylor and Holly-Taylor Stebbins, Kathy Williams Tail Extensions, Jack & Nancy Christensen,
Jennifer Dolby, JD Performance Horses, and Tiffany Weitzel. Thank you to the Michigan Quarter Horse Association for supporting me and also for supporting a variety of diverse programs and opportunities for members like myself to become involved in; the past Queens of the Michigan Quarter Horse Association for inspiring me and setting good examples; Kathy Christensen and the Queen's Committee; The Anson Family; Beckey Schooler; and Bruce Walquist. Finally, thank you to my family for always supporting me and believing in me, I would not be where I am today without you. A special thank you to my "number one fan," my mom, for all of the sacrifices you have made and for always being there for me. Most importantly, thank you God. Although just recently crowned in July, I have already had the opportunity to represent MQHA at a variety of shows. In July, I attended and presented awards at the Region 4 Championship show in Columbus, Ohio and the Lope For Hope All Novice Show in Greenville, MI. In August, I presented awards at an open show hosted by the Blue Water Pleasure Horse Association as well as the Michigan State 4-H Horse Show. Before representing Michigan at the All American Quarter Horse Congress in October, I will be attending other events including the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeder's Futurity. I am excited for an eventful year as the 2012 Michigan Quarter Horse Queen and am looking forward to meeting many new people in the industry!
