NEW
FUTURES
New Collection from Mr. Bigglesworthy – New Futures Opens 17 March, 2016 The American perspective on modernism continues to fascinate Dan and Emma of Mr. Bigglesworthy. The post war American home was influenced by a new wave of migrant creatives who had left Europe. It embraced the new, lighter look and clean lines that these architects and designers offered. It was a time of certainty in a bright future and a wave of fresh, consumer culture. In the 1950s and 60s, American designers like Adrian Pearsall, Charles and Ray Eames and George Mulhauser introduced exciting new looks into the home, with daring, exaggerated curves and a lightness of form. The memorable designs were paired with luxurious materials like walnut and marble. These works have remained current and highly desirable, however vintage originals are rare to find in New Zealand. The collection also highlights the exuberant colours and textures of the new, contemporary design that emerged in the post war era. These elements feature strongly in office and dining furniture produced by Herman Miller, high end lighting from Laurel and a pair of chrome chairs influenced by west coast designer Milo Baughman. The prominent American designs are teamed with equally adventurous pieces from the UK and Scandinavia. Highlights include a plush, 1970s upholstered chrome chair and ottoman from Swedish maker Dux and a 1960s executive desk in leather and exotic wengewood by Gordon Russell. These will sit comfortably beside the store’s trademark selection of iconic Scandinavian sideboards in teak and rosewood.
