I am an Italian architect who graduated at the Aalborg University in 2012 and I recently become a member of the Danish Architects’ Association. I am currently living in London, where I work for the architecture studio Levitt Bernstein Associates and I have been working and collaborating with internationally recognised firms like COBE, ADEPT and MVRDV. Passion for Architecture pushed me to change country, exploring different ways of approaching the project. I am constantly searching for gaining new knowledge through reading, drawing, modeling, designing and practicing.

QUALITIES I graduated as engineer with specialization in architecture at Aalborg University, where I gained the technical skills in construction calculations, detail drawings and environmental comfort analysis. I consolidated my strong design skills by using the most required 2D and 3D software as well as rendering programs and, through the practice, I increased a solid problem solving orientation. During my last experience at ADEPT I have been responsible of the design phase as well as the construction details of two main projects that will be built during 2014: UCN, a University located in Aalborg; and Villa Platan, a private summer house located in Aarhus. My Italian background, focused on the attention to details, combined with the Scandinavian approach contributed to expand my point of view and improve the quality of my work.

INTERESTS I have a real passion for food: I put the same effort in testing, cooking and presenting a dish as well as in designing a project. I like reading, and my innate curiosity leads me to always look for new challenges. I practice less sports compared to when I was younger, but I never left my two biggest passions: motor-biking and snowboarding. Finally, no matter what my budget and destination are, I travel.

VILLA PLATAN Villa Platan is the project commissioned from a private client for a summerhouse by the sea to be located in Aarhus, Denmark. The location in which the villa will be realized is a unique place characterized by the typical rough Danish seashore. Wild plants, sand and water are the main elements that distinguish the surrounding landscapes. The idea behind the project is therefore to emphasize the wildness of the area by placing a clean shaped volume that naturally finds its way into the landscape according to view, orientation and privacy. The house lays on the ground like a rock does in the desert: it is evident and part of the surrounding at same time, an architecture between human-made and nature. The dwelling structure wriggles to offer different views to the sea. The 150m² of the over ground space has been fitted as a unique volume where the sleeping room, kitchen, bathroom, living room and entrance are at the same time, isolated and communicating with the whole residence.

My task: When I joined this project it was already in an advanced stage. The design for the exterior shape was more or less decided but on the other hand I had the opportunity to work both on the interiors and materials as well as taking care of some detail drawings.

Since the project is about a relatively small dwelling, we had to focus on every single detail in order to keep the design as clean as we wanted it to be. I started working on the project realizing a detailed 3D model that I used both for the production of several tests related to form studies and material as well as for the final renders. The idea for the facade was to use a solid material, something refined and rough at the same time, a material that increases its qualities over time and that gives the feeling of a monolithic shape. In the end we decided for the original Kolumba brick by Petersen.

10

d.b. 11

While the north face of the dwelling is completely close for privacy and environmental comfort reasons, the big openings on the south side were studied in order to frame different views as well as decrease the edge between inside and outside. To achieve this purpose we used a frame that is hidden in floor and walls. Finally, regarding the outdoor pavement, after several tests, we decide for a naturally shaped slate stones in order to emphasize even more the clear architecture shape. The interior space is the part where I focused most of my attention. Since the beginning the idea was to keep the volumes as clean as possible.

The concept for the interiors was to integrate in one side of each room, all the main furniture: kitchen, wardrobes, bookshelves and cabinets. The wardrobe in the bedroom is hidden by wooden doors that go from floor to ceiling. The same principle goes for the cabinet at the entrance where one of the sliding doors reveals a passage that brings to the basement stair as well as to a secondary bathroom. The entire floor is covered in oak wood with 30 cm wide planks that cover the whole distance. During this phase I had the chance to help the clients in choosing materials and fixtures for bathroom and kitchen. Finally, the main bathroom differs from the rest of the house but we tried to keep the same simplicity. The floor and part of the walls are covered in Mosa tiles grey stones. The other side of the room, which is covered in wood, hide another spacious cabinet and the big french window allow to get inside without passing from the bedroom.

UCN AALBORG UNIVERSITY On April 2013, ADEPT was commissioned to design a new branch of a faculty of the Aalborg University, as well as renovating the interior spaces of the existing buildings nearby. The project for the new faculty consist of 6.000 m², distributed on four levels, dedicated to classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, administration, a library, informal study rooms and pocket spaces for resting. The two main existing buildings that develops along the new one, have been redesigned in order optimize the interior spaces as well as reorganizing and redistribute the different departments.

facilities. The welcoming main entrance guides you inside the big atrium, from which is possible to understand the design concept of the architecture. The clean basic geometry of the exterior shape differs completely from the inside where the pixelated volumes move in and out creating a series

of balconies that generate a lively space where studying or relax. The ground floor is therefore dedicated to a library and administration offices. From the two stairs in the atrium is possible to achieve the other floors where classroom and meeting rooms take place.

My task: I had the luck to be part of this project from the design phase till the final stage. A process that last for almost one year and that gave me the ability to grow as a designer as well as increasing my technical and communications skills. During the design phase we developed a significant amount of physical models, sketches and everything necessary to make the idea understandable. In the later phase I was responsible, in collaboration with a colleague, for setting the initial drawings in AutoCAD, plans, facades and sections.

At this stage we were in close contact with the client trying to make the most of our design and to understand what were the needs of customers in order to determine how much space to allocate to each function. It ’a complicated process that lasted several months during which we tried to refine the design without distorting the main concept. The next steps led me to carry out several facade and material studies in order to find the right expression for the exterior architecture. From here on, I was the only responsible for the interior design of all spaces in the building. Starting from the main lobby, I began to refine the design of the various elements: from the openings typology to the stairs and then again balustrades and doors, everything was firstly designed in 3D and finally drew in AutoCAD. The images and drawings shown here is a small part of a multitude of tests I have done for all of the building rooms. I took in exam various types of classes, as well as hallways and recreational areas, refining the design of false ceilings, openings, lights and floor materials. Great importance has been given to the artificial lighting and acoustic insulation, especially in the classrooms and the main lobby. During this phase, I was often in contact with the company IntraLighting supplier and engineers. All the test 3D tests results were then transferred in AutoCAD where I made constructive details to give to the engineers. Finally, thanks to my skills in 3D and rendering, I realized all the diagrams and the final images, as well as taking care of a storyboard to use in the movie that I made in collaboration with BozzettoStudio.

The interiors of the existing buildings were redesigned to optimize the spaces. Our main target was to connect the main atrium of every architecture. We therefore decided to revitalize the entire central hall by giving them new functions. The CFU administration building, situated on the East side, is the one that has been subjected to major transformations. The central space has been entirely redesigned to give light to a new library. In this design the shelves have the double function of accommodate the book collection as well as creating cosy reading areas.

TULOU PROMENADE

In February 2013 I started straightaway with this amazing competition: a cultural complex for Pingshan new district in Shenzhen, China. 80.000 m² to devote in cultural activities distributed in a district in rapid growth but which is not transformed yet, where the only presence is the adjacent residential development under construction.

25

The site area is clearly on the edge between a green park facing South and the dense city up North. Our proposal is to create a leisure wall with retail activities on the ground floor facing the main street. The cultural building are then linked to the wall with beautiful views to the park that flows right into the site. We re-interpret the local Hakka culture architecture to create a new modern version of cultural

26

buildings as a diversified cluster of courtyard buildings that welcome activities as a Theatre, an Exhibition space, an Activity centre, a Library, a Conference hall and Offices.

overhangs created by the buildings above to shade the space below, additional connections between the cultural buildings to the roof and also many sets of staircases to walk from roof to the park.

The wall is the real link between the city, the buildings and the park. While the inner part is dedicated to retail, the roof promenade is interpreted as a new type of outdoor roof space where there are

My task: I was involved in all the phase of the project. We started taking familiarity with the scale of the project, trying to organize the room program as well as designing the shape by using

physical models and hand sketch drawings. Once we were satisfied with the design we started the production of all the material necessary for the final booklet. I have been personally working on AutoCAD drawings, and been responsible for the realization of 3D drawing for the final images and illustrations. Finally, during the last few days I was involved in realizing the plan drawings and sections.

EENTILEEN

OSLO HOME On December 2012 I joined the architecture studio Eentileen (1:1) located in Copenhagen. This small company ran by the two architects Frederik Agdrup and Nicholas Bjørndal, focuses on the design and production of ”printed prefabricated houses”. The innovative system created by these architects take advantage of CNC machinery which allow to ”print” every components of the house optimizing the construction process and ensuring customer architectural quality at a competitive price. The main advantage is the one of being able to have the control on every phase

28

of the design process, from the initial idea to the final product. The will of the architects in entering the Norwegian market brought them to design a series of new appealing houses for this rigid climate. My Task has been the one of producing two images that represent the exterior and interior of a house that is meant to be located in Oslo. After preparing the 3D model I started applying and adjusting materials, furniture, background and all what is necessary for rendering both the scenes with V-Ray. In the end, I used Photoshop in order to give the final adjustments.

ROCK MAGNET On September 31st 2011 MVRDV Architects in collaboration with COBE Architects celebrated the victory by winning the first prize in a competition for the realisation of the ROCKmagnet, located in Roskilde. The first task of my internship has been taking part at the second phase of this exciting competition. The location is Roskilde, the birthplace of one of the world’s most famous music festivals, which over time has grown from a small local initiative to become a

30

global brand. The competition is launched by the Danish Rock Museum in collaboration with Roskilde Festival People’s College. The Professional Studios involved in the contest are five. In 2003, Roskilde Municipality purchased a closed concrete factory and the surrounding areas – the Unicon Site – with the objective of creating a new exciting cultural area, which has been given the name of Musicon. The Musicon vision is to give birth to a musical city, a neighbourhood

with more than 2000 workplaces and 650 residences for families and young people. A place with activities almost around the clock where people are to meet, be surprised, experience and be inspired. Particularly the ROCKmagnet consists of The Danish Rock Museum, The Roskilde Festival Folkschool, the student housing and the headquarters of the Roskilde Rock Festival. The concept is to use the existing factory halls adding three new volumes on top of them.

My first task has been to organize the room program for the Folkschool. The Roskilde Festival Folkschool is a place where the student can spend one year learning on how to organize events.

The power of the area is its roughness. The halls needed to maintain their original character. Therefore the interior spaces are organized with temporary “boxes”, easy to move once there is the necessity to create more space.

The next step has been creating the presentation physical model in scaleB 1:200, trying to recreate the feeling of the place and the essence of Rock music by using shining and coloured materials.

COBE

KLIPPEN

32

Klippen, is one of the recent projects from COBE designed for the dense city district called “Design City” in Kolding, Denmark. Since 1970 the city remained undeveloped and the urban centre evolved into a green self-grown plot. The project is about a delicate combination of the dense urban structure and the fragile nature already present.

The office building, called the rock, strives to be the link between the city and the nature, keeping a simple design that remind to something solid, robust, and at the same time organic. “The result is an expressive shape that finds equilibrium between the massive scale of the office structure and the human scale towards the adjacent urban spaces”.

My task has been creating the presentation physical model in collaboration with the young architect Hiroshi Kato while the entire action was filmed by a camera in order to show at the end the evolution of the model, from the assembly of the base to the connection of lights. Thanks to my previous experience with the Rockmagnet model, I gained in speed and precision during the execution. Nevertheless, we initially expected to spend two weeks to produce the model but due to some complication during the process, we had to extend the time schedule of one week.

Obviously the choice of the style and the materials are the first step in order to have a clear idea on how the model is going to look. In this case Kato’s experience had speeded up this process. The model is completely white and it is mainly composed of foam and white and transparent acrylic. Anyway, some of the most complex elements of the model were already made by using the laser cutter, so that our task were mainly to combine the different elements and dispose a base for lighting the model in the right way.

GJERSRUD STENSRUD The project consist in a parallel assignment arranged by the Planning and Building Services and Real Estate and Urban Renewal Agency of Oslo, where three different interdisciplinary teams explore their own plan approach in relation to three different densities, in order to realize three different scenarios. COBE assignment was to study a plan for the highest dense

34

situation where 9000 homes have to be provided within an area of 2,3 sqkm. The site is the last opportunity for a urban development in the Oslo municipality and therefore represent a very important area in relation to test sustainable planning and urban construction in large scale.

Therefore our approach was based on sustainability at all scales, from the city to the individual dwelling. The main vision for the area is to create a city where natural choice is the sustainable choice. Where sustainability should be seen as a “plus” and not a renounce in every day life for the area residents. In Gjersrud-Stensrud is easier and fun to take the bike or public transportation than taking a car,

therefore the distance between the different metro stations in the are is no longer than 5 minutes. The buildings are energy optimized, which not only provides good economy for the resident, but also improve indoor air quality and good lighting conditions, like green roofs, courtyards and common garden that provide a better micro-climate.

INHABIT THE OUTLOOK

This project describe the design process for a compact and temporary leisure house which is intended to be located in one of the most unique areas of northern Italy, the Garda Lake. The implicit approach to the architectural design of this project is referring to the Master education in Architecture & Design at Aalborg University, dealing with the topic of Tectonic and focusing on the specific aspect of Prefabrication. The proposal reinterprets the

historical context into a new house for the spare time that dips in the landscape blurring the boundaries between nature and artificial, private and public. In order to establish an intimate relationship with the place, the leisure house is constituted by two main elements: a concrete structure firmly situated into the site, that allow to continue the public passage, and a series of three prefab living unities which once linked to the structure form a whole composition.

Located on the border between the forest and the lake, the house becomes a transition element among the dense wood and the open view of the lake. Together these spaces create an experience that works over time emphasising the natural aspect of the dramatic landscape. While the concrete structure is meant to be built on site, the

living unities will be transported by means of truck. The chosen construction method for the prefab architecture is the panellized system. As the benefit of using off-site architecture is to simplify the elements, the concept behind these unities is to divide them in basic components that will require a process of few assemblies on site.

HOUSE FOR HOMES

d.b.

40

This architectural project is a “House for homes - suitable architecture for an urban hinterland. The architecture constitutes mixed use. However, dwellings and a special attention to the user is essential. The complex is not only qualified as a net zero energy building, but also suitable in the sense of an attention to the environment, the city as a whole and the inhabitant.

The design addresses the schism of the gap between the need for dense housing typologies and the fact that most people prefer to live in single-family housing. Thus, instead of merely focusing on the building performance, the main question that is pushed forward is: Can dwellings convince us to use less? Of course this implies that the user firstly has to be convinced that massive “energy machines” also can be an attractive place to live.

d.b.

I realized this minor project in January 2011. The target of the course was to design a dwelling for a photographer. The project is located in the Northwest side of Denmark in Hanstholm. While approaching Hanstholm, the feeling is to be suddenly landed on another planet. A steady dense fog full of water mixed with salt and sand produces a diffuse light and it gives the feeling that the sky is merging with the earth as a whole. Air can be touched, seen and smelled. The sea is screaming while the earth is in silence, bent by the wind. The idea is to protect the path toward the house from the strong wind with a wall. The thickness of the concrete wall works also as “central core where utilities like kitchen, fireplace and bathroom has been stored.

d.b.

The rest of the house is divided in two hanging wood boxes linked to the wall. The day zone is located on the West side, facing the sea, while the workspace and the night zone are located on the East side. The Fireplace becomes the real central space of the dwelling, connecting both sides.

Having a look to the room program and the flow diagram it becomes clear how the concrete wall has been thought as an architectural experience. The concept of the dwelling is based on the photographer’s necessity to live in Hanstholm just for a short period. Inspired by her works, I decided to place the building in what I think is the most dynamic area of the place: the beach. The unpredictability of the sea and the power of the wind interact with the building and decide the shape. In this flat landscape the dwelling cannot be hidden and it rises from the ground exposing itself to the natural elements.

FYRKAT VIKING MUSEUM

48

This project present a competition proposal for a new Viking Museum at Fyrkat, Hobro, designed in the 1st semester master of Architecture & Design, Aalborg University. The proposal reinterprets the historic context of the scenic site into a contemporary building, which poetically frames a transition from the present to the past and serves as a starting point for the experience of the impressive Viking fortress, Fyrkat. The new museum is constituted by two main elements: a monolithic main building situated firmly into the site sheltered by a light woven screen, which together form a whole composition that links the elements of the site and treats the theme of Nordic and tectonic architecture. The screen is both a symbol of protecting what is behind it, and the symbol of a beginning transition from the present to another time - a gradual process of uncovering the layers of time, which have removed certainty. A process further intensified in the exhibition, where the visitor moves through space to uncover frozen moments in time - atmospheres from the Viking life communicated by use of artefacts and sensory impact. A carving in the volume defines a central connection point within the building, and clearly anchors the building to the site, offering immediate access to the Viking village as an integrated exhibition space.

49

Upon arrival to Fyrkat Viking Museum the visitor recognizes the new museum building as one of three motives - the others being the open landscape to the right and second the denser Viking village to the left. The screen stands as a distinct element in the landscape.

With its clear reference to the original enclosing structure of the monument, this is a first statement of the historic past of the site, which is to be explored. From the interior the screen allows filtered views, suggesting the landscape that lies behind, but still marking a boundary.

This serves to underline the concept of not having a clear view from all spaces at all times, but using the views in more narrative way shifting between framed views, unobstructed views and filtered views to create the wished experience in and around the building.

From the exterior entrance space you enter the next layer, the foyer space, which carves itself out the monolithic building volume. The intense, warm brick used on the exterior facades is continued inside the foyer creating an intimate atmosphere.

The answer of the past lies in the ground. One has to peel of the layer to expose the essence of Viking life and tradition. The project proposes an exhibition spaces in a continuous flow, where the movement is guided but not dictated, and where you seek deeper into the ground (lower

level) to grasp the essence. The exhibition space consists of outer open space and closed volumes of moments in time. Interplay between these spaces is introduced by composing a multilayered experience using translucency in opposition to solidity to create “filters.

SPINE BRIDGE

52

Looking at the overall bridge, the sense of movement and the dynamic modulation are the main characteristics that attract the attention. Nevertheless the explanation of the main idea stands in something more rational. Indeed the challenge is to design a vibrating bridge that like an anatomic component of a skeleton is created by a repetition of simple elements. Only the variation of two constants generates the waving effect. The aim is to start from the simplest geometrical shape, in a way to enable the whole process of formation in the easiest and effective manner.

The chosen element is therefore a rhombus composed of four equal sides. The maintained height of the path and the variation of the rhombus angles are the two constants that generate the organic shape of the bridge; these are also giving the variation in height of the two sides and thereby allow the ability to raise or decrease them. The whole bridge is made of 44 rhomboidal elements each one composed of 6 sticks of wood joined together with wire. From this data it is clear that the wood is not the only element that makes the bridge to be possible. The wire is indeed occupying the greatest role in the entire structure. It is the key element that links together the rhombuses and creates the course of the whole bridge.

POLIMI

LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS OF POLIGNANO The subject of a degree thesis is simultaneously a consequence and summary of the experiences acquired during the degree course. When I chose this project I wanted to explore a further approach to the concept of sustainability, and a detailed knowledge of the landscape underlies every act of contemporary planning. The decision to make a landscape analysis of Polignano a Mare was prompted by my wish to understand better a place that is dear to me. The study was based on an analytical approach that involved considering the different aspects of the area in terms of fundamental categories: its orography, hydrography, geology, plant life and the natural environment, agriculture, roads and pathways, settlements, management and administration. The paper mainly consists of a collection of iconographic, literary, cartographic and photographic documents, accompanied by drawings, illustrations and models, that give an insight into the complexity of the landscape by breaking it down into its constitutive elements, a technique that allows the particular characteristics of a place to be interpreted in a manner that is generalisable and always valid. There is an infinity of relationships between these different levels, and this complexity can be captured by relating and comparing them in different ways.

54

OROGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY

The study began with the orography of the area, because that is the prevalent characteristic of any observed landscape. Given their close relationship, the contours of the land and the courses of the rivers and streams were considered together. At the same time, the geological study led to the identification of the lithological classes characterizing the sub-soil.

GEOLOGY

55

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND AGRICOLTURE

Agriculture is the predominant aspect of the area, which has been transformed by the work of farmers since the time of the Romans. This plate shows the prevalent forms of cultivation as well as the spontaneous vegetation, which is restricted to the more impervious and relatively inaccessible areas. The next phase was a study of the transportation networks in relation ROADS AND to the historical development of Polignano.

PATHWAYS

56

HISTORICAL HEPOCS

In conclusion, if the aim is to preserve what remains of the past, the quality of the landscape and the interventions that have transformed it, as well as the way in which peoples have interpreted the values it represents, it is necessary to identify the elements that have made it what it is. The more restricted nature of a landscape analysis of a commune makes it possible to identify the qualitative aspects of an area even more precisely than at regional level. The aim of the thesis was therefore to offer a first analytical approach LANDSCPAE capable of identifying the qualitative elements of a landscape.

ME

MAC-COOLer This personal project was born from the necessity to find a way to ”cool” my laptop and the will to improve my skills on one of the most amazing plug-in for Rhino: Grasshopper. My computer is turned on 24 hours a day and during the toughest deadlines it could become incredibly warm. Due to this reason I develop the idea of designing an object that I could have physically build by myself by means of a laser cutter and a cardboard sheet. The shape, drawn in Rhino, has been designed in order to be comfortably used on a desk or on the user legs. The so called ”waffle structure” was introduced in Grasshopper, through which, at the end of the process, I had the possibility to decide and easily change the number of elements that compose the final object.
