KIDBROOKE VILLAGE Phase 6
Following an invitation from Berkeley Homes in May 2019, Reddy we believed form the most promising building blocks from which Architecture have worked on creating an over-arching design vision future conversations during the design process, can be most fertile that re-imagines a framework for the redevelopment of Phase 6 of the for making it better. More appropriate to the needs and desires of the community and all people who will benefit from it over time and more Kidbrooke Village masterplan. representative of the qualities associated with exemplary placemaking. Kidrooke Village is located within The Royal Borough of Greenwich, south-east of Blackheath. The Phase 6 site is in the upper north-east The concept was to set out a framework for the creative possibilities to come, encouraging one to dream about what this place and its corner of the masterplan and is due to complete in 2028. The essence of this masterplan framework is to imprint the ‘connections’ architecture could be.

The design approach for forming a cohesive and legible masterplan, 1) New and logical routes between buildings and places to establish a which is both unique in and of itself but also legible and in sympathy hierarchy of connections. within the whole, responds to the following design objectives. 2) Create a distinct Area within the overall Kibrooke masterplan promoting diversity. Kidbrooke neighbourhood. 5) Optimise site orientation and ensuring protection to existing buildings. 3
My Tasks: I was responsible for the design development of the masterplan, finding the main principles (or design objectives as explained in the previous page) on which the masterplan is based. Once the principles were set up I started focusing on the massing in respect of the areas and number of units expected by the client. The most challenging part of the masterplan is probably represented by the adjacent train line. One of our main concept was to create a linear podium that would run along the railway which contains the resident carpark and that creates a buffer zone protecting the southern part from noise pollution. The next step was to the design the facade of the buildings that form the masterplan, from the ”Parkside Tower” on the West, to the ”Village” on the East side. The areas and the internal layout were developed in Revit, while the facade modelling was done in Sketchup.

KIDBROOKE VILLAGE Block D In 2018 I joined the Archtiecture Firm Reddy Architecture + Urbanism. Since the first days I stated working on the Stage 4 and 5 of the building complex called Block D, being part of the wider masterplan development called Kidbrooke Village, located south of Greenwich. The development consist of a mixed used comprising of a car park basement, a retail and community space below a landscaped podium, which addresses a natural change in height across the site, and 5 medium to high rise towers that accommodates 335 residential units. The five residential towers (D1, D2, D3, D4, D5) are all residential North South orientated and accessible at ground level trough 5 individual lobbies.

Additional apartment units sit on top of the podium between the tower blocks reinforcing the primary façade and screening the landscaped areas beyond. These are what we call Podium apartments (to the North between Block D1 - D2 - D3) and Townhouses (to the South, between Block D4 and D5)
The primary materials include brick and glass to form shallow and deep reveals that respond to the buildings orientation as well as the internal apartment configurations.
The monolithic buff brick façades are punctuated by cantilevered balconies with bright smooth soffits in stark contrast and are arranged The towers vary in height but are consistent in design language with in alternating patterns on the façade. similar materials used in a variety of configurations.

Revit has been the main software in use for the project. This allowed me to greatly improve and consequently master the program. During Stage 5 and after sending out most of construction drawings, my focus was then to approve drawings from several manufacture companies mainly focusing on window and door drawings. As part of my task I was also attending regular site visit to follow the building site progress. Being constantly in contact with the Client, Engineers and Contractors, this experience gave me the opportunity to improve my management and communication skills as well as improving my knowledge on Construction detail drawings.

CAMPFIELD Located in Manchester, Campfield is the project for a mixed use building that sits between two former covered market hall, from 1882, known as Upper and Lower Campfield. Broken into 3 distinct volumes, the Building purpose is to become a new link between the historic markets. Architecturally we have been influenced by the form of the traditional Victorian engineered hall, which both Upper and Lower Campfield are exemplar illustrations of. Each clearly demonstrates the passion that the Victorian Engineers had for modernity and structural honesty. Middle Campfield has a deliberately robust aesthetic and the intention is, that whilst complementing both Upper and Lower Campfield, it has its own distinct character.

SOFTWARE: AUTOCAD - SKETCHUP - VRAY - PHOTOSHOP - ILLUSTRATOR
My Tasks: The façade is horizontally split into strata’s, which the articulation of, reflects the function of the building within, giving the building a sense of visual honesty. Each layer can be constructed in isolation from that below, allowing the construction method to be varied to directly suit the building program. A prominent feature of the elevation strategy is to deliberate lift the residential units above the workspace units below. This expressed division allows the new building to acknowledge the scale and form of its neighbours.
I have been responsible for the latest design version here shown, focusing mainly on the residential section of the building, from units plan layouts to exterior elevations, 3d modeling, diagrams and visuals. The residential apartments have been designed to read a series of lightweight modular units held within a structural frame. The central atrium allowed for the units to be dual aspect. The duplex units at lower and upper level are 2B4P. Between the two floors of duplex units, a single floor of flats (2B3P) is located.

LONDON ROAD FIRE STATION In 2016, our client Allied London had the vision to give the 13,000 m² Grade II* listed fire station, located in Manchester and built in 1906, a sustainable and practical future. The building, constructed in the Edwardian Baroque style, has been in disuse since 1986. Therefore, the vision was to capture the ravages of time whilst arresting further decay and protecting and restoring significant historic fabric. The development philosophy was not to attempt to restore the fire station to its 1906 appearance and condition, but to celebrate the exceptional heritage value whole life of the building whilst securing a sustainable use. The brief for this Planning Application and Listed Building Consent was to offer Hotel accommodation, banqueting and conference facilities, small-scale workspace units aimed specifically at the creative industries, wide-ranging food and beverage options, small-scale retail spaces within unique historic spaces, high-end apartment living and new space below the existing courtyard for private hire and public events. As well as restoring and giving new purpose to the historic building, the proposal included the introduction of new interventions designed to be clearly read as such and be detailed in a high quality complementary, contemporary form way which will defer to the heritage significance of the former Fire Station. The new architectural elements proposed for the courtyard consist in a new hotel accommodation wing to the London Road internal elevation and a contemporary glazed pavilion at the centre of the courtyard to give entry to a new event space within a new basement under the courtyard. The modern interventions are designed to complement the existing buildings. To sit harmoniously within the courtyard and enhance the existing architecture. To create an overall composition within the courtyard – establishing a dialogue between the new entrance pavilion and extension façade.

The glazed pavilion diagonal bracing is deliberately expressed becoming a striking motif on the elevations and it helps to reinforce the dynamism of the overall triangular prismatic form of the building. As for the rest of what it is showed in this Portfolio, I have been responsible for all the graphics, visuals, 3D modeling and diagrams. Being able of mastering 3D modeling software like Sketchup, Rhino and in part Revit, allow me to have a great understanding of the mass, structure and details. No exception is the new hotel extension façade, that went trough a number of alternative approaches.
The initial concept was to project on the new cladding panels the existing elevation, as shown in the diagrams below. The panels would have than been perforated and lit from behind revealing at night the ”ghost” of the previous elevation. The elevation makes direct reference to the existing façade: the proportion of the window apertures and their regularity has informed the fenestration pattern. The existing balconies that will be removed in this location have also been referenced in the façade design and proportions. The façade is to be constructed in a mixture of solid and perforated patinated bronze metal panels that sit harmoniously when viewed with the existing brick façade.

THE WISH TOWER RESTAURANT The proposed project is for the construction of a new purpose-built restaurant to be located in Eastbourne, on the South East coast of England, next to one of the most iconic historic building of the city: the Martello Tower, built during the Napoleon period and renamed as The Wish Tower. Plan, elevations, 3D model, visuals and diagrams are an extraction of the planning application document I realized during May-June 2016. The Wish Tower Restaurant represent the first project I have been taking care of as project leader, from the initial concept to planning application, under the supervision of the Senior Architect Mark Keegan. The design of this project is an evolution of its initial sketch deliberately inspired by the beach hut and the fishing net huts, typical of the South coast. The brief for the project was to provide a new contemporary and self contained restaurant for up to 100 people with an all-around view and a large external terrace. The building form has been therefore carefully sculpted to either take advantage of opportunity or respond to constraint in equal measure. The key driver in the form making process was the consideration and positioning of the new building between the Wish Tower and the sea wall running along the promenade. Inspired by the solidity of the Tower surrounded by the defensive wall, the proposed plan develops around a solid functioning core that include Kitchen, Bar, Staff Area, Tolilets and Bin Storage. The space surrounding this central core is dedicated to the seating area Cafe, Bar and Restaurant allowing to experience the place in every direction without creating a ”back side”.

My Tasks: As well as being responsable for the design since the very early stages, I have led the project taking it up to planning application. Due to the small size of the project, I have been in charge for the production of all the drawings, including 3D models, CAD drawings, diagrams and visualizations. This project gave me the opportunity to improve my time management and organization skills, especially during the realization of the Design and Access Statement, as well as participating and coordinating meeting with client and engineers.

In August 2015 Levitt Bernstein Associates won the first prize of a competition for the refurbishment, restoration and extension of a multi complex building located in Eastbourne, called the Devonshire Park. The project is still on going and we are now developing the stage 3 phase, that mainly consist of detailing and finalising our design. The project area includes: 1) The Devonshire Park Theatre. 2) The Winter Garden. 3) The New Welcome Building. 4) The Congress Theatre. 5) The Park, with tennis courts and player facilities. The Congress Theatre and Winter Garden are the main two historical building that required a major restoration. The Congress Theatre is a landmark in the Devonshire Park centre in Eastbourne. The grade 2* listed building from the 60’s is positioned between the Winter Garden (to the east) and the Towner art gallery (to the west). To the north the building is adjacent to the tennis club grounds and the south it is bounded by Carlisle Road. The Winter Garden provides flexible space for conferencing, exhibitions, dinners and performance events. The intention is to reinstate some of the original heritage whilst modernising the available facilities and improving the internal environment (comfort experienced by visitors). The building has a dedicated entrance off the junction of Compton Street and Carlisle road. The Welcome building is the new extension from us designed that will act as the new main entrance into Devonshire Park, linking the Congress Theatre and Winter garden. The building provides circulation and lifts to deal with the differing levels between the two existing buildings. Moreover, it will provides new conferencing facilities and associated support spaces.

My Tasks: I have been part of this project since the competition’s design phase where I was involved in the design, 3D modeling, diagrams and final visualizations. After this phase my role for this project has mainly been to design the refurbishment of the Congress Theatre and the design of the new Welcome Building, focusing on exterior elevation and interior spaces.

VILLA PLATAN Villa Platan is the project commissioned from a private client for a summer-house by the sea to be located in Aarhus, Denmark. The location in which the villa will be realized is a unique place characterized by the typical rough Danish seashore. Wild plants, sand and water are the main elements that distinguish the surrounding landscapes. The idea behind the project is therefore to emphasize the wildness of the area by placing a clean shaped volume that naturally finds its way into the landscape according to view, orientation and privacy. The house lays on the ground like a rock does in the desert: it is evident and part of the surrounding at same time, an architecture between human-made and nature. The dwelling structure wriggles to offer different views to the sea. The 150m² of the over ground space has been fitted as a unique volume where the sleeping room, kitchen, bathroom, living room and entrance are at the same time, isolated and communicating with the whole residence.

When I started working on this project the design for the exterior shape was more or less already decided but I had the opportunity to work on the interior layout, the materials choise, the elevations design and some of the detail drawings. While the north face of the dwelling is completely close for privacy and environmental comfort reasons, the big openings on the south side were studied in order to frame different views as well as blur the edge between inside and outside. To achieve this purpose we used a frame that is hidden in floor and walls. The interior space is the part where I focused most of my attention.
The concept for the interiors was to integrate on one side of each room all the main furniture (kitchen, wardrobes, bookshelves and cabinets) in order to create one continuous space. The wardrobe in the bedroom is hidden by wooden doors that go from floor to ceiling. The same principle goes for the cabinet at the entrance where one of the sliding doors reveals a passage that brings to the basement stair as well as to a secondary bathroom. The entire floor is covered in oak wood with 30 cm wide planks that cover the whole distance. The entrance to the bathroom next to the main bedroom is hidden by the wooden wardrobe. The bathroom floor and part of the walls are covered in Mosa tiles grey stones. The other side of the room, which is covered in wood, hide another spacious cabinet and the big french window allow the access to the bathroom directly form outside. During this phase I had the chance to help the clients in choosing materials and fixtures for bathroom and kitchen.

UCN AALBORG UNIVERSITY In April 2013, ADEPT was commissioned to design a new branch of a faculty of the Aalborg University, as well as renovating the interior spaces of the existing buildings nearby. The project for the new faculty consist of 6.000 m², distributed on four levels, dedicated to classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, administration, a library, informal study rooms and pocket spaces for resting. The two main existing buildings that develops along the new one, have been redesigned in order optimize the interior spaces as well as reorganizing and redistribute the different departments.

My Tasks: I had the luck to be part of this project from the design phase till the final stages. A process that last for almost one year and that gave me the ability to grow as a designer as well as increasing my technical and communications skills. During the design phase we developed a significant amount of physical models, sketches and
30
everything necessary to make the idea understandable. In the later phases I was responsible, in collaboration with a colleague, for setting the initial drawings in AutoCAD, plans, facades and sections. At this stage we were in close contact with the client trying to make the most of our design.
The next steps led me to carry out several facade and material studies in order to find the right expression for the exterior architecture. From here on, I was the only responsible for the interior design of all spaces in the building. Starting from the main lobby, I began to refine the design of
the various elements: from the openings typology to the stairs and then again balustrades and doors, everything was firstly designed in 3D and finally drew in AutoCAD. All of the visuals that I realized where both used as part of the design process as well as final images for the client.

ROCK MAGNET In September 31st 2011 MVRDV Architects in collaboration with COBE Architects celebrated the victory by winning the first prize in a competition for the realisation of the ROCKmagnet, located in Roskilde. The first task of my internship has been taking part at the second phase of this exciting competition. The location is Roskilde, the birthplace of one of the world’s most famous music festivals in europe, which over time has grown from a small local initiative
32
to become a global brand. The competition is launched by the Danish Rock Museum in collaboration with Roskilde Festival People’s College. The Professional Studios involved in the contest are five. In 2003, Roskilde Municipality purchased a closed concrete factory and the surrounding areas – the Unicon Site – with the objective of creating a new exciting cultural area, which has been given the name of Musicon. The Musicon vision is to give birth to a musical city, a neighbourhood
with more than 2000 workplaces and 650 residences for families and young people. A place with activities almost around the clock where people are to meet, be surprised, experience and be inspired. Particularly the ROCKmagnet consists of The Danish Rock Museum, The Roskilde Festival Folkschool, the student housing and the headquarters of the Roskilde Rock Festival. The concept is to use the existing factory halls adding three new volumes on top of them.

My first task has been to organize the room program and design the interiors for the Folkschool. The Roskilde Festival Folkschool is a place where the student can spend one year learning on how to organize events.

The power of the area is its roughness. The halls needed to maintain their original character. Therefore the interior spaces are organized with temporary “boxes”, easy to move once there is the necessity to create more space.
My next task was to create the presentation physical model in B scale 1:200, trying to recreate the feeling of the place and the essence of Rock music by using shining and coloured materials.

HOUSE FOR HOMES
d.b.
34
As part of my last year of master degree studies, as students of Aalborg University we were challenged to designing a Zero Energy Building to be located in Aalborg, on the edge between the ancient town and the modern housing development.
This architectural project is a “House for homes” - suitable architecture for an urban hinterland. The architecture constitutes mixed use. However, dwellings and a special attention to the user is essential. The complex is not only qualified as a net zero energy building, but also suitable in the sense of an attention to the environment, the city as a whole and the inhabitant.
The design addresses the schism of the gap between the need for dense housing typologies and the fact that most people prefer to live in single-family housing. Thus, instead of merely focusing on the building performance, the main question that is pushed forward is: Can dwellings convince us to use less? Of course this implies that the user firstly has to be convinced that massive “energy machines” also can be an attractive place to live in.

SPINE BRIDGE
36
Looking at the overall bridge, the sense of movement and the dynamic modulation are the main characteristics that attract the attention. Nevertheless the explanation of the main idea stands in something more rational. Indeed the challenge is to design a vibrating bridge that like an anatomic component of a skeleton is created by a repetition of simple elements. Only the variation of two constants generates the waving effect. The aim is to start from the simplest geometrical shape, in a way to enable the whole process of formation in the easiest and effective manner.
The chosen element is therefore a rhombus composed of four equal sides. The maintained height of the path and the variation of the rhombus angles are the two constants that generate the organic shape of the bridge; these are also giving the variation in height of the two sides and thereby allow the ability to raise or decrease them. The whole bridge is made of 44 rhomboidal elements each one composed of 6 sticks of wood joined together with wire. From this data it is clear that the wood is not the only element that makes the bridge to be possible. The wire is indeed occupying the greatest role in the entire structure. It is the key element that links together the rhombus and creates the course of the whole bridge.
37
