on a Saturday night and see some of these same guys banging bars at the National level. The thing that excites me the most is who is next? Will it be a Yentzer or a Tucker or a Naecker that reaches that next level next? Only time will tell but the best part is that we get to witness some of the best racing available. Isn’t it cool that our region has bred so many champions that are so dedicated to rise to the top of the podium? It excites me and keeps me heading back to the tracks week after week. I hope to see you there. In this issue find a nice mix of local mx, both bikes and quads alike, along with some harescrambles, flat track and enduro racing. As a matter of fact, I could go through a list of riders in just about every one of these other disciplines and find just as many champions, both past and present, that dominate the pro racing world as I did above for mx. Names like Borich, Delong, Texter and Lafferty, all from our region. My hats off to you all, and thanks for making my job so easy. We’ll see you all out at the track. Jim Bull, MRA Editor

5 JUNE/JULY 2013
Happy June everybody, maybe we’ll get to finally turn off the heat. What a year we’ve had so far weather wise. I heard they’re going to change the name to global cooling; wouldn’t that confuse all of the experts? Speaking of experts, yeah, we got them. It’s funny how it seems like just yesterday that guys like Jeremy Cook, Casey Clark and Barry Carsten were racing the expert divisions. Oh yeah, they were, and that yesterday was anywhere from 10 to 20 years ago, and they are still out kicking butt. Then there are guys like the Toth Brothers, Lowell Spangler, Broc Schmelyun and even J Law. Back then they were on 50s and 60s, and look at them now, some still racing Pro, some already there and retired. Then there are the new kids on the block, guys like Riden and Vertucci and Palonicola to name a few. Some of those guys were still in diapers way back then. My point, besides the fact that time seems to find a way to slip right by, is that in our great sport on any given Sunday you can hit a local track and see any number of these guys still going at it, both young and old alike. Or maybe you’ll turn on your TV

EAST COAST FLAT TRACK SERIES: ROUND 1 PENNSYLVANIA SHORT TRACK • SHIPPENSBURG SPEEDWAY Baer and Cose Score Wins at Shippensburg East Coast Flat Series Opener April 7, 2013 • By: Len & Ben Breech National number holders Shawn Baer and Chad Cose
emerged from the opening round to the East Coast Flat
Track Series at Shippensburg Speedway with a win apiece in the Expert finals. The series is run within the District 6 & 7 points chase, but also has its own points standings and rewards at the end of the year. Eastern Harley Davidson Dealers Association is the presenting sponsor, with several flat track supporting dealers and suppliers. The eight race series has three short track: two at Shippensburg Speedway and one at a classic name, Reading Fairground; and all five half miles on the schedule: single races at Bloomsburg Fairgrounds and Gratz Fairgrounds; and three at Big Diamond Speedway. Early season races around here usually have tracks that are not fully dried out from winter and usually are a little damp and sometimes rutty from the ground being not completely thawed. Normally, Shippensburg is a black groove type track that is as hard as asphalt, but whether from a lack of normal snow over the winter or no rain over the past week, today’s track was very dusty with a narrow groove and rather slippery if you drifted off of it. One common theme for early season races is the large entry list in the Expert classes. With many professional riders not yet traveling and many “freshly minted” experts testing the waters, it is usually difficult for the newbies to make the final. Of the almost thirty Experts, six held National numbers. Shawn Baer put his Baer Racing Products Kawasaki in front of several National numbers at the start of the Open A final with Jake Shoemaker, Don Mullen, Evan Baer and Jeremy Higgins behind. Jay Maloney moved past Higgins on the third lap when he drifted high in four. Evan bobbled in the same spot on the fifth lap, letting Maloney into fourth. Shawn kept several lengths in front of Shoemaker for the entire distance. By the time the 450 Sportsman heats came up, Californian Chad Cose had figured out the track. He grabbed the lead from Mullen, Evan Baer, Maloney and Shawn Baer. Shawn went under Maloney for fourth as they entered one on the third lap. The Cose/Mullen battle for the lead put them several lengths ahead of the Baers. Over the last half of the race, Mullen was trying to rattle Cose in the fourth turn, tapping his rear tire, but to no avail. Jason Nuss grabbed the Open B lead from Zach Mullen, Devon Gerhart, Cody Ebersol, Colin Cunningham and Ryan Varnes. Mullen’s shot at glory disappeared on the fourth lap when he fell in turn three. By halfway, Nuss led Gebhart with Varnes, Ebersol, Tristan Avery and Cunningham a little further back fighting for third. With two laps left, Nuss got loose in four, letting Gerhart slip past. Varnes tried to get under Nuss for second off two on the final lap, but they touched, causing Varnes to lose some momentum. Avery tried to get under into three, but came up just short. Tom Majeski scored a pair of wins in the 40 + and 50 + finals. In the 40 +, he survived a mid race to lead Dallas Baer, Rich Mellinger and Dave Smith again. On the third lap, Mellinger took over second, while Baer bobbled late in the race, letting Smith by. The 50 + had Majeski leading Lowell Wherley, Jim Chapman and Scott Slade for the win.
Tyler Scott moved up to the 65s this year and again dominated the event. He had trouble off the line, giving Doug Cook and Aaron Johnson a half a lap lead before getting underway. Once underway, it took him four laps before he got by Cook off two. Cook did stay close to him. In the 50 Chain, he lapped the field. Brandon Price took the 250 Amateur lead from Cameron Smith, Austin Wherley, Tyler Rylee and Ken Kolsovsky. Rylee was another one who found out about slippery conditions in four when he drifted high on the fourth lap. Most of these riders returned for the 250 Sportsman that lets Expert riders also compete. Roy Miller led Colin Cunningham, Price, Ryan Varnes and Kevin Bills out of two. Varnes took third on the third lap, setting up the top three spots. Rick Winsett took a wire to wire win in the 30 +, leading Steve Lerch, Darren Phillips and Roy Miller. Miller worked his way up to second by halfway.

Delaware Enduro
May 5th, 2013 50th Anniversary Edition Photos and Story by Paul J Freeman www.pjfreemanphotography.com
Kyle McDonal wins the Overall at DER.
It has been said that enduro riders are one of the toughest groups of motorcycle riders… after all, they race through every kind of terrain, in all kinds of weather , and in a typical day can log over 100 miles on their odometers before their day is through. The Delaware Enduro Riders club has been putting on enduros for half a century… so they have not only ridden through all kinds of adversity, but have also hosted their annual event through it. I recall more than a few years where there were torrential rains, and even sleet and/or hail… resulting in riders enduring miles of slippery, rutted trails… which were often hard to see, because the extreme conditions caused the riders goggles to either “fog over”, or “ice up”.. despite whatever attempts the riders did to keep them clear. Of course, there have been years where riders were greeted with extreme high temps and humidity, that sapped the energy from even the fittest of enduro racers. But this year, on the historic 50th running of the Delaware enduro.. Mother nature was simply smiling on the riders and crews hosting the event, and dished out beautiful spring weather in the low 70’s, on a bright, sunny day. Simply stated, the weather could not have been any better for an awesome day in the saddle. But.. this year was not without its share of adversity, as this year, at seemingly the “last minute”, the DER club was unable to secure all the land use permits for using the hallowed grounds of the C&D canal. But, again, being a hardy bunch… the club rallied together, and put together a plan… in a short 4 week period, they laid out, cut and created an almost entirely new race course, which featured a total of ten sections that comprised about 90% of fresh, virgin trails. Another notable change was the format of the event itself… as DER is known as one of the most demanding of all ECEA enduros that tests a riders ability to “time keep”, which means the ability to keep within the speed averages that change throughout the day, as the trail winds through everything from slow, “tight trail”, to the more “wide open” sections. But this year, the DER club decided to run the current format of the National Enduro series, which utilizes all “start controls”.. (which essentially takes all the tricky timekeeping of a typical “old school enduro “out of the equation). As in any changes to a typical race format, there are pros and cons that can be argued… but in this instance, I really think this format fit the situation well considering what the club had to deal with...
Mark Yonjof races in Super Senior A.
I had the chance to interview riders from a wide variety of skill sets and race experience, as well as having raced from areas well outside of the ECEA. Here are what a few had to say… I first spoke with a couple racers that are a father & son “racing duo”; namely Richard and Ryder Lafferty. You may recognize these names if you ‘re an AMA member.. as they had just been featured on the cover of the latest issue of the AMA magazine.. (how cool is that?!?). As for how his race went, Rich admitted he was not “on his game” for this event, but said he was extremely happy to see his son Ryder doing so well throughout the day. (*note - Ryder finished in 2nd overall on the day!) Rich added: “With two young kids being at the top of the overall, and other new competition in this event throughout the classes, I think that we need start control format races to be the norm for the enduro series to survive. With the exception of young guys like Jared Kulp or Derek Gaunt, there is not really much “new” younger competition coming up. So I think some of us need to swallow our pride in order for the series to survive, and I applaud Delaware on their efforts with the start control format. The actual ten test sections were awesome. The only negative was the length of sitting around at pauses, but in their defense having been around for awhile, if it rained we may have needed all that time...... Good job to Kyle McDonal and Ryder of course for showing the ECEA regulars speed!” Rich went on to say “Ryder said he was excited and had a lot of fun........he was pumped to come away with such a good result. He (Ryder) told me “I just focused on riding smooth and carrying momentum through the turns, which was easy because the course for the most part was a good flow”. – Richard and Ryder Lafferty Next I spoke to Kyle McDonal, who put in an awesome ride, and was the Overall Winner of the event: Kyle stated: “We decided that Friday before the race to go to it because it was a local event on an off weekend and we had been hearing good things about all the new trail the club had added. I started back on row 46A, and was loving the trail. By the
time I reached it everything was cut in just right. The track had a little of everything with tight trails, mud, grass track and even some rock sections. I’m racing the National Enduro Series so the start controls were good for me. The DER club members did a great job getting the race together after losing the property they had for year a month prior. It was actually one of my better races where I had only made a few mistakes and was able to get the win. For that I have to thank all my sponsors for helping me out: Town and Country Cycle, McDonal Electric, Factory Connection, FMF, HBD graphics, Powerseal USA, EKs brand goggles, Enduro Engineering, Renthal, Troy Lee Designs, my mom and dad, brother, sister and also my girlfriend. – Kyle McDonal, Overall Grand Champion Next up was A200 rider Zack Huberty: “I was excited going into the DER enduro as I’ve always found the transition from sand to rocks, roots, and mud a difficult one. This year I’ve been riding strong and was pushing for another top 20 overall to put points towards AA advancement. This year’s track showed a lot of work as it tested a rider’s ability to ride mud, rocks, roots, deep creek crossings, mud, tight woods, grass track, and logs (10 sections total). I couldn’t be more excited to win A-200 and place 17th overall in a stacked field of talented riders. I will be back for next year!” - Zack Huberty A 200 1st place I had a nice chat with fellow A SSR racer Mark Yonjof, and hope to take him up on his offer to try out the trails in his neck of the woods “down south”. Mark and his dedicated group of riding buddies (all from NC and SC) each take turns picking out their favorite enduros to go to for the year. “We cover pretty much the whole east coast and wanted to hit the 50th running of the Delaware enduro and were not disappointed. We had a blast and they will definitely be on our Christmas card list” . Mark added: “That was some GREAT trail and reminded me a lot of the old Wisconsin and northern Illinois enduros (Mark used to be a riding partner with Jeff Fredette back in the 80’s when he lived there, so you know he can motor through the woods!). About the format, being an “old school enduro guy”, it was no surprise to me that Mark mentioned “I did miss the time keeping though...” As for his crew, he said “Those of us that stayed on two wheels did well taking 1st in Sen C, 1st in Vet B, and 3rd in SSA. Our pal Andy crashed hard and Neal had to stop and see if he was still alive so they dropped too many points to take home any iron or bragging rights. Thanks to the DER club for putting on a GREAT enduro! - Mark Yonjof, A SSR (rider 11B) I also wanted to add comments from east coast enduro “living legend” Charlie Stapleford… Charlie stated: “We want to thank everyone that was able to show their support by attending our 50th anniversary of the infamous DELAWARE STATE ENDURO. We acknowledged the tough act to follow after four of our ECEA clubs showed the way and each event was an excellent example of why our association has so many reasons to be proud. Seemingly, by all your kind responses; we too have kept the bar on a very high notch. Now let’s all keep the ball rolling and support the next event too. RORR always has an excellent run for us to start off the rock event season. We especially want to express our appreciation for all the fine examples of sportsmanship and responsibility displayed by our enduro community.” – Charlie Stapleford, DER Trail Boss Lastly, some comments from a newbie to enduro racing in the US; Pedro Faria: “I came from a small town in Portugal called Telheiro. I had my first race there when I was 8 years old and I competed in my first enduro there when I was 15 years old. The enduro in Europe is quite different than what I see here, in that there are three different types of sections; one is enduro section, consisting of enduro trails, second is a “cross section”, made of 50/100 of jumps, and the third being an extreme section which is enduro and cross but on real tough trails. The start and scoring is basically all the same as what DER had; and as far as the race, I really enjoyed it, had fun, made some friends on my row and even helped one of them with my tools so he could keep going on. It was awesome to race and meet all these guys and I really felt like I was back home, what a nice experience it was; and I’m already planning on repeating it again!! I have only been doing some HS here, but now after this event, I will be planning on doing more enduros! – Pedro Faria, C Open, 3rd place

MDRA 7 at Doublin Gap May 4-5, 2013 • By: Morgan Vallie
On this beautiful weekend at Doublin Gap Motocross Track there was a
lot of great racing and family fun! The sun was shining and about 300 riders
were about to start this fourth round of the MDRA 7 series. The morning started off with the Plus 30 classes, with Jeremy Cook taking first for the day in Plus 30 A. 250 B was one of the best races of the day, with a battle between Arie Reachard and Joseph Balkovic. Following that race, there was a struggle to the checkered flag in the 65 (7-11) B class between Chase Yentzer, Mason Bowman, and Deacon Kozel.
I wanted to say good job to Colton Yentzer for his win in 85 (9-11) C! In open A there was a race to the finish between Broc Schmelyun, Jeremy Cook, Michael Foor, and Zak Riden. Jimmy Barry and Joseph Balkovic had a good run in the School Boy class. Seemed to me that many people had a good day; even off the track, the kids were having fun on the playground/bike track, and the parents were just soaking up the sun while watching the kids ride. Overall, it was a great day of racing, but I saw far too many riders on the sidelines due to injuries. Stay safe, guys!

Hello friends. My name is Zachary Camp. Sounds pretty good to have Jesus right with us in the flesh, doesn’t it? Well, Jesus said in John 16:7, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.”

You know, friends, that Jesus said it would be better for Him to die so He could then send His Holy Spirit to live within you; John 14:26 also speaks of this. You see, the Bible speaks of God as our Father and as our friend, which are close relationships. We can have a “walkie-talkie” relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. This is a twoway conversation with a quick response; a still, small voice. Some may think you’re crazy, but the truth is that if you will listen to the Holy Spirit, He will make you look good. He is wiser than you are. Friends, invite Jesus to be your Savior and invite the Holy Spirit into you to fill you up. Become a friend of God; He loves you and wants to help you every day. Begin that two-way “walkie-talkie” conversation by reading His Word and learning the mind of Christ. To learn more go to:

Imagine you are one of Jesus’ disciples and you are walking down a dusty path with Him. You are greeted by an important man who is in somewhat of a panic. The man says to Jesus, “Please come and heal my daughter, she is at the point of death.” Jesus begins to follow him and within a few minutes two men come running to meet you. They say quickly to the important man, “Master your daughter is dead; don’t bother Jesus any longer.” Jesus quickly speaks up, telling him, “Do not fear, only believe.” So, after a long walk you finally arrive at the important man’s home. People are all around, crying. Jesus says, “She is not dead, but asleep.” He then goes into the girl’s bedroom with just you and the parents, shuts the door, and reaches out His hands and says, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say unto you, arise.” The girl then wakes and is raised from the dead. Jesus then suggests for her to have something to eat.

By: Noel Hartem • Photos by: Tim D Photo.com The NEOC or North East Off Road Championship Series is in its sixth year racing the tri-state region. (N.J., N.Y. and Pa.) The Whitetail was the second race of the season and with two races under our belt, we are averaging 996 riders. It’s no longer fear that we feel when facing those numbers, we just know its a “pull up your boot straps and big boy pants, put your head forward and go til it’s over” type of thing, because you will get no rest or breaks until then. If you stop, you lose. Every department is full throttle with no mercy or pity for the person next to you, because you’re living the same thing they are. I know that sounds harsh but it’s the straight-up truth. When it’s over, we holler, laugh and cry, give our hugs and say, “see ya at the next one.” That’s just the way it is now. The NEOC has officially become its own entity that runs on the blood of the staff and volunteers. I can’t express enough how much these people give to make such a thing as this a success. We are a unique group that keeps moving forward into uncharted waters powered and driven purely by the hearts and backs of regular Joes. The series races youth and pitbike classes on Saturdays and adult classes on Sundays. Races average anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours in duration, depending on the division. We have classes from the very earliest beginners’ to the oldest and the fastest racers around. For more details and to see complete race results check us out on the web at: www. neocracing.com

A few web posts from the day: BIG T says on April 8, 2013 at 10:39 am Big thanks to everyone who worked the hills and mud holes. Never complained. I’m proud to be friends with people like you. See ya next race Steve S. says on April 9, 2013 at 10:24 am This is our second season racing and all I can say is, I have never in my life met such a great group of staff and racers. The sportsmanship from the tikes to the main riders is unreal. I can say we are addicted and love it so much and can’t thank you enough. It really shows the love that Brian and the rest of the NEOC family has for the sport and our kids can’t wait till Ormond. 450x racer says on April 8, 2013 at 8:03 pm Thanx for another great race. I loved the multi line section in the back. Hope to see more like that.
Mike Lafferty takes the Husaberg to the overall main event win.

MDRA 6 at Rocket Raceway Late April saw the racers of the MDRA 6 Series travel to Rocket Raceway
for their inaugural race of 2013. The day was overcast with rain moving in
part way through the first motos and lasting throughout the day. The crowd was decent considering there was a Loretta Lynn Qualifier going down just a few miles away at Pleasure Valley Raceway. This event not only marked Rocket’s opener for the year but also was

the first race for the new owners. Saturday saw some dusty conditions with the new crew getting that fixed for Sundays racing action. The crew at Rocket is passionate about racing and customer service, and I think they did a great job for their first time out of the shoot. Watch for continuing improvements at the track and be sure to head back for their next event, MDRA 7 Bikes on July 28th.

Jerod Stoner races to the overall Main event win.
Valley Forge Trailriders Anthracite Harescramble May 11-12, 2013 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com Mothers Day weekend brought a combo race to the proposed Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area site. Racers from both the ECEA and the D6 Pa. State Harescramble Series converged on central Pa. to do battle on what would be a very soggy course. Saturday’s race took the brunt of the weather with clear skies on Sunday for the adult bikes and quads.
Hundreds of racers came out for the event and many brought their Moms. What better way to show your mom you love her than to roost her with a bunch of mud as you motor by. Honestly, I haven’t taken any polls on that, but knowing as many moto moms as I do, I would bet that’s a fair statement. The gang from the VFTR did a great job laying out the 9.5 mile course that offered lap times for the leaders in the 26- to 27-minute range. Jerod Stoner would take the checkers in just under one hour and 46 minutes. You can check the overall finishers here and find the rest online at: www.ECEA.org. For adult quad results head to: www.amadistrict6.com Check our pages here for upcoming harescramble dates and be sure to watch the VFTR website for info on their Moonshine Enduro later this year.

We weren’t able to make it out for the Saturday event but we found this blurb on the ECEA website: Well, Mother Nature put her foot down. Well, in reality, rain came down. Soaking rain to an already wet surface allowed the ECEA FastKIDZ and District 6 ATV riders to ride the VFTR Anthracite Trail. The VFTR gang prepared an awesome course but the rain gave a bit more of a challenge. Rocks, mud, roots, running water, and more mud, these kids just ate it up. Overall Youth 1. Kyle Tino 2.
