Hello Race Fans! We're Back!!!! Happy almost spring everybody. Has it been cold enough for you this winter? Well with any luck that will soon be behind us and we'll be digging full bore into the race season. I know, we're looking forward to it also. How do you like our new look? We would appreciate it very much if you would let us know. Give us a call or an email, or if you see us at the track come over and say Hi and let us know what you think. We hope to be able to keep the color all year long, it is expensive though. So if you like it and can support us thru a subscription or by recommending an advertiser please do so. Speaking of subscriptions, we are in the middle of our winter promotion. Even though you can usually find MRA at the track your subscription helps us cover more racing action. We have a super deal right now, thru the help of our printer and their mailing capacity we are able to offer a $5.00 a year subscription to MRA. In addition to that, everyone that subscribes before February 29, 2004 will be eligible to win a 1 year FREE pass to Rausch Creek MX and ATV Park. Only 1 free pass will be given away. See the form in the back of this issue or log onto www.mcracingaction.com for details. We look forward to seeing you all at the races this year, we met a ton of great people in 2003 and I'm sure we'll do the same this season. Round #1 of the PA State Hare Scramble Series kicks off the season at the Dutchmen February 8th. Then we go indoors to the Motorama at Harrisburg February 21st and 22nd for some Arena Cross action. Again we thank you for your supporting what we do, it's going to be a great year for all. And remember, if you see that groundhog on the 1st make sure that sucker does not see his shadow, we need spring to get here now. Until next time!

Varnes and Majeski Take Third Straight Timonium Win By Len Breech
TIMONIUM, MD. DEC. 20 Mike Varnes and Tom Majeski closed out the 27th Annual Rodney Farris Memorial Indoor Short Track undefeated in their finals. Varnes had an assist from Jake Johnson in winning the Pro class on his White’s H-D/Ray’s Yamaha sponsored Yamaha, while Majeski rode Johnson’s bike to the 250 class win over a determined Corey Hormes at the Baltimore County Trail Riders/Cockeysville Optimist Club sponsored event. Johnson was the quickest of the night, setting fast time of under seven seconds on this tight 1/10th mile concrete oval, winning his heat semi and the dash for cash over the other class fast qualifiers and the next fastest qualifier. At the start of the Pro final, Johnson grabbed the lead from Varnes, Bryan Douglas and Raun Wood. The front two quickly pulled out a large margin (for here) over the others in their battle for the lead. For the first time Johnson looked like he might take the added $250 bonus money put up by one of his sponsors; Nort Racing/Lexus of Cherry Hill, but he again slid out, giving Varnes the win. He quickly remounted and retook second. Majeski again took the point from Hormes, Rich Mellinger and Paul Allison, but lost it getting around a collusion on the fourth lap. Majeski kept the pressure on and slipped under Hormes off two on the ninth lap and pulled away. After being oh-so close in the previous races, Shawn Rothstein finally got the 125 final lead
Shayna Texter and Matt Langrehr had their streaks stopped in the Women’s and 65 class, respectively, by crashes. Langrehr in the semi, putting him on the back row for the final, and Texter in the final, although she regrouped and was right behind winner, Laura Montgomery, at the flag. Colton Smith took the 50 Oil Injected final. With this the season came to a close, until Trail-Way opens on March 21.

Winner of all three Pro class finals: Mike Varnes and disappeared from opening race winner, Joe Schueler, Cory Texter, Joey Parks and Nick Henderson. After running up front in earlier finals, Doug Reinert grabbed the 450 lead from Rob Smith, Tim Bemisderfer and Mark Burkholder. After trying unsuccessfully to rub his way by around halfway, Smith regrouped on his highly specialized Bultaco and nudged his way past Reinert coming off the second turn on lap twelve. Afterwards, he said he wanted to dedicate the win to his brother, James, who died in the fall. Several riders managed to win two of their three finals, Majeski fought off Johnson for his second 50 Adult win, Bryan Douglas took his second straight XR 100 win over Jason Isennock and Bailey Spence took his second straight 50 (4-8) win also. After throwing away a sure win in last week’s 85 final, Brett Pugh again disappeared and stayed upright for an easy win over Brian Myers and Tyler Kidwell.

2004 OFF ROAD RACING
Hey Kids !!!!!
by Mike Soudas
2004 is here and another season of off road racing is just around the corner. This year look for the return of national caliber events to hit the northeast. The GNCC series returns to Rausch Creek. Rausch will be hosting a National Hare Scramble as well. A fast look to the National Enduro Series sees a move to New Jersey for an event. Locally District 6 has a full schedule that includes the 10 rounds of the PA Series. Another series of interest is the ECEA Hare Scramble series. Four ECEA events will be dual sanction with the district. Look this year for a few youth bike riders trying to make a statement in the adult classes full time. Some of them are Ryan McGaha, Mike Potts, Tim Rizzon, Mikey Soudas, Len Rehatchek, Jerod Stoner and Keith Parker to name a few. A new track is debuting this year, Miles Mountain MX. Also look for some Saturday events at Foot of the Mountain and Miles Mountain.

Jeremy had a great year in just his first full season of racing, taking the track championship at Foot of the Mountain and ending up second in the BP State Series. Jeremy went into the last race of the year hoping to win the district championship. Jeremy had things well in hand as he was leading the race when at the halfway point he experienced a mechanical failure and had to end the race. Jeremy ended up finishing a strong second in the district points for 2003. Watch out next year, this young man will be back with a new ride and he will be bumping up to

Gibson Long Travel Suspension Kits ATV racing has elevated itself to a whole new level. In the past year we've seen the introduction of several new sport ATV's. For years racers like you and I have worked hard to maintain our machines and keep them ready for competition on the track. This takes countless hours of cleaning, tuning, and most importantly building the bikes. The building part is what I enjoy the most. A certain part of me actually looks forward to the break so I can get busy tearing down, polishing, powder coating and rebuilding. Last year, I had a slow start to the season, poor planning and bad timing left me struggling to build a ride for the 2003 season. By the end of spring, I was well off the pace in the points race for the District 6 Harescrambles, the focus then turned to planning and testing for the 2004 season. During the summer break of the 2003 season I began testing and tuning with East Coast ATV in Palm Pennsylvania. We developed a great relationship and spent countless hours tuning the ride and preparing for the remainder of the season. Rather than turn my focus to the new generation of 4 strokers that are taking over, we decided to take the old R to the next level. We assembled an Arens chromoly framed 250R using top notch products from ECATV. We installed Gibson components on the race quad including the steering stem, swing arm and most importantly the AArms!! Gibson products have been in development for several years. With help from top Pro GNCC and GNC (MX) racers such as John Natalie, Dustin Wimmer, Gil Attix, and Rob Hertz, they have been able to develop a proven long lasting product that performs like no other. The Gibson Long Travel A-arm kit was the one product that I looked forward to installing more than any other. I've had nearly every brand of aftermarket chassis on the market, not to mention having installed every new gadget that was available over the last ten years. This suspension kit was different, this kit was the "next level" for my R. The Gibson kit utilizes 19 inch shocks as apposed to the 16 inch shock that had become the industry standard. The added length of the shock and the geometry of the A-arm does add a little more travel, but the key is in the shock tuning. When using 19 inch shocks we are able to run more sag in the suspension with out sacrificing ride height not to mention it gives the shock builder more room to dial in all those goodies inside the shock. We choose to use Custom Axis shocks built by Mike Halik out in sunny California. Mike and Custom Axis have become the leading shock builder in the world and did an outstanding job building our shocks. When it came time to install the kit we laid everything out and I could not help but notice and admire the quality of the part and the packaging. Everything was labeled perfectly and nothing was missing. The kit is fully adjustable and uses king pins and Honda 400EX spindles. Chromoly heim ends do all of the adjusting at the mounting point, I found nearly 10 degrees of adjustment to work with for caster and camber. This kit is rather complex and allows almost too much adjustment for the average rider. I liked the fact that after a few rides if
something was not feeling good I had a way to change it. Caster and camber can become unbelievably important in a 2 hour long race. Too much negative or positive caster can really affect arm pump and fatigue. With this Gibson kit I was able to eliminate any negative steering and handling characteristics and basically tune the front end specifically to my riding style. After the Teflon bearings were installed we hung the arms and shocks, then installed the spindles and hubs. We were careful to follow the instructions thoroughly and use loc-tite where it was needed. Once things were snugged down properly, we set the caster, camber and toe settings and left the loc-tite set up for the evening. The next day after a few adjustments we hit the track. The first thing I noticed was the stability and steering. The ATV seemed unbelievably stable in the corners and the steering was effortless. The Custom Axis shocks were right on the money the entire package felt real good to say the least, there was only one thing left to do!! After a a few days of seat time it was off to Taylortown Pa for Round 8 of the GNCC series. The Taylortown track is rather fast and wide open, I got a decent start and headed for the woods. Being the first time on the bike at race speed I was curious how the Gibson front end and Axis shocks would handle the abusive off camber woods terrain. After a few miles I started to feel out the front end, that's when I realized I couldn't feel much at all. At one point on the track, the trail leads along an embankment and then a left turn takes you up the embankment. This is the type of maneuver that would normally bottom out the left side of the suspension and pull the bars toward the left to track up the hill. With the Gibson kit I felt more in control of the steering at all times. The deep ruts and large roots were soaked up with out detection! At that point in the race I was convinced that this was the set up for me. That was my first GNCC race in the highly competitive 250A class for nearly 3 years. I ended up with an 11th place finish for the day which I was very happy with. Since then I have raced this ATV and its Gibson Long Travel kit in nearly 10 local events and logged over 15 hours of ride time with out any problems whatsoever. East Coast ATV and Gibson have an excellent racing program in place for the 2004 season. With a talented field of Pro and amateur racers, championships should start rolling in.Chris Borich will continue to head up the GNCC efforts for ECATV campaigning his #2 Yamaha in the Pro class. Chris battled hard last year with #1 Bill Ballance for the championship but Ballance prevailed. Next year might be different though. Borich has shown he has the speed, now he'll show he has the experience to get the #1 plate. John Natalie will lead the way in the GNC's and MX races. The infamous #13 switched over to the ECATV/Gibson camp last season and walked away with the win at the last round of the season in Southwick. Since then he's won the final round of the ITP quadcross series at Glen Helens in CA. as well as the Southwick Memorial race for Darren Naccarato!Dustin Wimmer winner of nearly every amateur championship in the GNC series will move to the Pro class this year as well as teammate Gil Attix. The Gibson kits are available for the 250R, Z400, KXF, YFZ, 400EX, Cannondale and the new 450R. They are available from East Coast ATV as well as KandK ATV. You can visit ECATV on the web at www.eastcoastatv.com or contact there sales Rep. Matt at 215-541-4985.

Maryland Competition Riders Annual HANGOVER HARESCRAMBLE - January 4, 2004 By Steve Green
With the weather in the 70's and a slight morning drizzle, Budds Creek Motosports Park was the perfect venue for the Hangover Harescrambles. The Maryland Competition Riders and John Beasley (Budds Creek) did an outstanding job of putting on this event. 230 racers showed up for this event which covered the motocross track, the flat track, the woods, and new single track sections to prove who was the fastest. Motocross vs. Harescrambles? By the days end it was the Enduro racers that swept the podium. This years Hangover produced the same Overall Winner as last years event with Bromley Cycles/W.E.R./Z Leader Goggles/RRP/Oneal/Jen Racing's Walley Palmer taking the podium. Meteor Motorcycle Club's Palmer pulled the hoeshot of the 31 rider Pro/AA/A line, but did not lead the race until lap 4 when Shenendoah Honda/ RRP/Spectro/MSR/Sidi/HJC backed Kevin Crine crashed due to lappers. Crine, the SX'er and MX'er was the favorite going into this event, being that Budds Creek is fast, especially when you add the motocross track. However Crine couldn't shake Palmer or Shenendoah Honda/W.E.R/Shift/FMF/Motorex/Scott USA's Greg Gillian. On lap 4 Crine, got into lappers, took me out, they put me over a bridge and into the mud, I was stuck. When I tried to make up the time I crashed in a water hole wheelieing, the bike stopped dead and I went over the bars. My day was over. This left the gate wide open for Palmer and Gillian to battle, swapping the lead at gas stops and in the woods. On the first lap Gillian crashed, "I crashed and gashed my arm on the first lap, I waved Crine by and settled in for the day." Well he settled in nicely to be swapping for the lead all day. Late in the race, Palmer began to separate from Central Jersey Competition Riders Gilian to win by 40 seconds. The gash in Gillians arm proved to be his downfall, "I lost the feeling in my hand and couldn't reel Palmer in."

Fairway Cycles/W.E.R/County Paintball/MSR racer Kevin Bennett worked his way into third place and was chipping away at the leaders lap times, but the 2 hour race format did not allow enough time for him to battle with the leaders. "On the second lap, I went into a ravine and lost the leaders. I began to click from there, 10 seconds a lap I was knocking off, but the pace was quick. I made no other mistakes." Competition Dirt Riders Bennett plans on racing the GNCC Vet class in 2004. On his defending victory, Wally Palmer stated "the motocross track was nice, the trails were a little muddy. There were a lot of lappers, but they moved over good." Another notable finish was 4th place Ryan McGaha, this 16 year old backed by Woodbury Power Sports/Oneal/Scott USA/Regina/Tag/Unifilters is a very talented young rider. He placed second overall in the GNCC Mini Senior Class in 2003 and plans on riding the GNCC 200A class in 2004. There it is, the Enduro riders were the fastest at the 2004 Hangover Harescrambles. First Place was Wally Palmer (2004 ISDE Silver Medalist), second place Greg Gillian (2004 ISDE Silver Medalist), and third place Kevin Bennett (ECEA Pro).

EVENTS Schedule February '04
By Andy Fleck & Al Carr
www.reactive-suspension.com Of all the components on a two stroke engine the exhaust system is by far the most fascinating. It has no moving parts yet plays possibly the biggest role in extracting the maximum amount of power out of any size engine. Starting at the exhaust flange your exhaust pipe is made up of, a lead in or header pipe then comes the diffuser, a straight section of varying length a baffle cone and finally the outlet pipe or stinger. How does it all work you ask, well... After combustion occurs in the combustion chamber the piston begins its downward stroke. The first port to open is the exhaust. Exhaust gases stuill under quite a bit of pressure move into the exhaust port and generate a high pressure wave ahead of them. It is this pressure wave that we are most interested in. Remember that in a two stroke engine the exhaust and intake cycles occur at the same time, as the exhaust gases are leaving the combustion chamber a fresh charge is entering from the transfer ports. What the engineer tries to achieve with the pipe design is to remove all the burnt gases from the cylinder while trapping the fresh intake charge. So back to that pressure wave.... The pressure wave moves through the exhaust port and enters the header portion of the pipe nothing of great interest happens here but then the wave enters the diffuser. The diffuser is that portion of the pipe shaped like a megaphone meaning the pipe is getting fatter, as the positive wave enters this section of pipe a portion of it is reflected back toward the exhaust port with its sign inverted to a negative low pressure wave. In a well designed system this wave will arrive at the exhaust port around the time that combustion pressure is falling and this low pressure wave in concert with the inertia of the burnt gases will create a vacuum at the exhaust port pulling the spent exhaust gases and some of the fresh charge into the pipe. The length of the diffuser is critical as it determines the duration of the negative waves action on the evacuation of the cylinder. The remaining portion of the original high pressure wave pases a short section of straight walled pipe and now enters the baffle cone, that part of the pipe that diminishes in size. Upon entering the baffle cone the high presure wave is reflected back in its original sign as a high pressure wave. Again, in a well designed system it will arrive at the exhaust port just in time to force any fresh intake charge that has been pulled into the pipe back into the combustion chamber before the piston closes the exhaust port, like a cheap supercharger but with no moving parts and as with the diffuser the length of the baffle cone is key to the strength of the wave and its duration. As I'm sure we all understand there is a considerable difference between the power characteristics of say a CR125 and a CR500. The smaller displacement engine needs to rev its guts out to make power and its exhaust system is designed with this in mind. Put the 125 and 500 exhaust pipes side by side and look at them. The 125 system is short and stubby while the 500 pipe is long and flowing. The 125 requires stronger pressure waves of shorter duration hence its diffuser and baffle cones are shorter in length (shorter wave duration) and more steeply angled (stronger wave signal) The 500 pipe seems to vary very little in its dimensions in comparison to the 125 as it performs better with lower pressure waves over a longer duration. You could build a pipe for the 500 with characteristics similar to the 125 but the result would be very narrow hard hitting powerband that would be hard on the rider and the engine. The stinger or outlet pipes diameter is its most critical element, too big and the wave energy will bleed off returning a wave too weak to be of practical use. Too small and the wave energy can be high enough to do some serious damage to the piston. If you check out pipes from different manufacturers you will find that for a given engine displacement the stinger diameters are the same. Now if reading this description of expansion chamber function has indeed lit that little bulb over your head don't for a moment think about modifying your current system. All expansion chambers today are designed with the help of computers which can calculate the differences in wave speed in a closed chamber with temperature fluctuations. The speed of sound (pressure waves) will vary based on the temperature of the exhaust gases, about 1200 degrees at the exhaust manifold then down to as little as 500 degreees as the gasses expand and cool

You're Reading M.R.A. – Thank you in the widest part of the pipe and back up to around 800 degrees in the baffle cone. So you can see that the wave speed is not a constant that can be easily calculated. For many years I have been an advocate of stock exhaust pipes. It is very rare to see an aftermarket pipe that will yield a better overall powerband than the stock pipe. Notice I said overall, I have no doubt that you can buy a pipe that will supply a higher peak horsepower but at the expense of a broad spread of power. I'm not knocking aftermarket pipes, depending on Al Carr Andy Fleck track conditions they can be beneficial in the same way different gearing can be. HARLEN FOLEY - EXRIDERS.COM MRA: Harlen, where can we find you competing these days Harlen: I have been racing the A class in the local district 6 and 7 hare scramble series as well as the Stock class in the GNCC Series and also at the ATV Olympics MRA: What machines are you racing Harlen: I ride a LTZ400, a 400EX and a new Honda 450R soon MRA: What's your racing number so we can watch for you Harlen: National # 70 MRA: Where are you from Harlen: Westminster, MD MRA: Can you tell us about your accomplishments over the last couple of years Harlen: Sure, in 2001 I won the B class championship at Flying Dutchmen, that same year I placed 3rd in both District 6 and the PA State Series, In 2003 I was racing the A class and I placed 4th in the district and 3rd in the PA State Series. To start off 2004 I finished 3rd in the Vet class at the ATV Olympics in Florida last month. MRA: How about sponsors Harlen: Burgard Cycle, Ray Wilt in Hanover, PA, Rausch Creek MX Park, Bowers Motorcycle Supply, C & D Racing, ITP Tires, HMF Engineering, Elka Suspension, Fullbore Innovations, IMS Products, Tag Metals, Cometic Gaskets, Xtreme Gear, Mothers Polish, Streamline Performance, Spider Grips MRA: Can you tell us how you got started Harlen: I first started riding in 1985 when I got a 125M three wheeler for Christmas, and I have been hooked ever since. My first quad was a 1988 Suzuki Quad Runner, which wasn't my first choice but my father didn't think a 250R would be too useful on the farm. Needless to say, I didn't get my first race quad until 1998 when I bought my own LT250R. Tim Schmelyun, Multi ˆYear District 6 A Class motorcycle champion took me under his wing and tutored me on becoming a smarter rider and allowed me to practice on his track. In 1999 I purchased a 400EX and started practicing several times a week. With the help of Burgard Cycle and Ray Wilt, I was able to build a race ready 400EX. I first started racing in 2000 and I entered several motocross and hare scramble events in District 6 and 7. In 2001 I decided to race just hare scrambles the entire season and I had an awesome year. I won several races in the B class with over 50 racers in the class, and I ended up winning the Flying Dutchmen Series
and finished 3rd in District 6. In 2002, my race season was hampered with mechanical problems and injuries, so I only raced a few races. In 2003, I raced the GNCC Series and ended up winning several vet class races and finished with National Number 70. I also finished 3rd in the PA State Series A Class. I had an awesome time racing with Chris Borich, Rob Hertz, Mike Krachun, Matt Smiley,Traci Cecco, and many other top GNCC racers that compete in District 6. The thing that I enjoy most about racing is the great friendships that I have formed along the way. ATV racers are a tight group, so I think that makes it a great sport to be involved in. MRA: What is, or tell us about exriders.com Harlen: Launched in 2000, exriders.com has already received a huge positive response from the Sport ATV community. In the past year, the site has quadrupled in size, and is continuing to grow at well over 200 new members a week. Many top Pro riders like John Natalie, Jr., Chris Borich, Andy Lagzdins, Johnny Gallagher, Santo Derisi, Chad Duvall, Mike Krachun, and many others frequently visit the site. Also, exriders.com is proud to have HMF Engineering, Elka Suspension, ITP Tires, Burgard Cycle, Rausch Creek, and C & D Racing as sponsers. Santo Derisi - exriders.com atv specialist. An overwhelming majority of our members that frequently visit our site either race or are actively involved in the ATV industry. Given that, exriders.com is planning on elevating it‚s race coverage in 2004 to a new level. exriders.com is excitied to announce that it will be attempting to report race standings and pictures from every GNCC on the day of the race to keep our members informed. Also, Jason Hughes will be posting race reports and pictures from District 6 MX and XC events. Finally, Kenny Hill and Roy Bloodworth will be assisting exriders.com in expanding our race coverage to include more, GNC, ITP Quad Cross, WORC, NE ATV, and NQRA Series races. An exciting new exriders.com program for school age ATV riders is the Academic Awards Program, which enters students who achieve straight A‚s on their report card quarterly to win various awards. Several PA Companies have also gotten involved, such as Rausch Creek MX and ATV Park which has contributed FREE admission passes. Also, Burgard Cycle donated a bearing carrier quarterly and A-arms annually for a student who earns a grade point average of 4.0 for the academic year. Join exriders. com community today, and become a part of the future of ATVing. MRA would like to thank Harlen Foley for his time for this article and also for the endless hours that he devotes to racing and to exriders.com. The commitment it takes to achieve what he has goes beyond being commendable, please take a moment of your time and check out exriders.com, it can only make the sport we all love stronger and I'm sure you'll find something there you like. – Jim Bull MRA
