Hello Race Fans

Happy 4th of July everybody. This is a great holiday. We get to celebrate the birthday of this great country we call home. I believe as time moves on it carries more meaning. Many times we just see it as another day off work, or a time for celebration and fireworks. But please remember that as our ancestors fought for our freedoms so many years ago, so do the young men and women that serve in the armed forces today. Many are not home with their families or even able to celebrate like we will. They are on high alert in a foreign land still fighting for our freedoms. Fighting to keep this land and others like it safe and independent. Please, whether you are for or against this grave conflict that we find ourselves in, pray for our soldiers and the leaders of the world that we may find a solution to the situation while keeping these great

freedoms that we celebrate each and every day in this country we call America. After all, it is the greatest place on earth and it still has the fastest racers on the planet. On top of all that, school is finally out for another year. I expect to see everyone picking up their lap times now that there is plenty of time to practice. Please stay safe and out of trouble and go easy on your parents. Our lives still go on as normal, so help us out where you can. Race season is in full swing here in the area. June was big but July is getting even hotter. The flat track racers have their National Championships the first week of the month and many of the regional qualifiers will be in the books for Lorettas. Only a few weeks left to we find out who the fastest racers in the land are. Hold on to your hats, I believe it’s going to be good year for D6 and the surrounding area. As always we’ve packed as much race coverage as possible in this issue. We would love to cover them all, but it just isn’t happening. We value your opinions and concerns and we thank you all for reading. Keep on tap to the weekly race images both from MRA and its contributors. There are many great photographers out there every week covering the action and you can check most of them out by logging onto our website at www.mcracingaction.com. Then click on the contributors corner. Ok, thats it for now. Keep the rubber side down and we’ll see you at the track. Until next time. Jim Bull, MRA

A Kids View Whats Up? This is Chase. I would like to give you a little information about one of the last races that I was at....which in my opinion was one of the hardest tracks I have ever raced on. RORR (Reading Off Road Riders) hosted this race which was located in the middle of “coal-mining heaven in Pennsylvania! At the start there was at least 6 inches of “coal soot” which made the start even more challenging. I felt like I was riding in sand. The track was approximately 5 miles long with tons of rock all over. Passing was available at many parts of the track because of the many lines to choose from. At one point in the race we actually had to ride up a small stream which made it even more fun...but challenging. So, if you are up for a challenge, hit this race next year!! One of things that I enjoy most about racing is the friendly competition. Many people arrive at the track the day before the race to check out the track and have fun. We talk about racing, school, play football and have a great time! After the race we talk about the track, banging bars and getting the “hole-shot”...we even try to cheer up whoever had a bad day. Having friends at the track makes racing even better!

See you on the starti ng line....

Hobbies: Snow Boarding Goals: Turn WMA Pro Sponsors: West Shore Suzuki, WMXtreme, Lock Jaw, MSR, Pro Taper, PJ1, Spoke Savers, Girlyz Racewear. This month race fans we add yet another first to our Hotshot column. It’s a class that we should have honored before now, but as they say. Better late than never. This month we looked to our Women’s Class racers. There are many good one’s around, but this time we chose Kelsey Green from York, PA. Kelsey is in her 4th full year of racing and she’s done quite well for herself. She told me a few years ago she used to ride around her families house and it was her dad that talked her into giving racing a try. After a few trips to the track, she was hooked. Kelsey started racing on 85’s a few years back, she would race both the Women’s and 85cc age divisions. Her first race was at Happy Ramblers in Hanover, PA and she recalls not doing very well. She raced the 85’s for two seasons before moving up to the bigger bikes. In 2006 she continued to race the 85 while beginning on the250F and till the end of the year she was crowned Women’s Champ in the Happy Ramblers Track Championship Series and the MDRA Series. Kelsey competed in the D6 Ultimate MX Series on the off weekends and was still able to take a third place finish for the season. In 2007 Kelsey has moved on to the big bikes only and she competes just about every weekend in three different classes. The Women’s class has been growing and on any given weekend you can find 10 or more young ladies out there mixing it up on the track. She also likes to challenge the boys while competing in both the 125 C and 250 C divisions and her ultimate goal is to be able to compete on the Womens Pro circuit. Kelsey continues to step up her program and on July 21st of this year she will be offering the first to this area ladies only Motocross School. That’s right, Kelsey wants to work with the girls to help them improve their skills and maybe even teach a few new girls how to get it done out on the track. The school will be held at Happy Ramblers and you can contact Kelsey for more details at (717) 683-2240. (see below) See, I told you she was a hotshot. Make sure the next time your at the track to check out all of the women’s class racing action, and watch for that # 48 on the Suzuki’s. There’s a good bet she’ll be the one leading the way.

Ever get the desire to swing your leg over a motorcycle and ride? If so, then throw your pretty hair in a ponytail, strap on a helmet and come out to Happy Ramblers on July 21 for a girls only motocross school. All skill levels are welcome, even those who have never ridden a day in their life, or don’t have a motorcycle can come! It struck me one day when I was on my way to a motocross school. I had a scheduled class with another rider. Not knowing anything about him, other then the fact that he was about the same ability in riding skills, I was a bit nervous. On the way to the track where the school was going to be, I explained to my Dad how I was uneasy about the fact. To reassure me, Dad said if it didn’t go well, next time I could bring a girl along to my lesson to ride with. (The day turned out really well actually, minus the fact that I crashed pretty hard!) When talking to other girls about this, they seemed a little uneasy about taking lessons with guys also, which gave me the idea. A school that is specially for girls! On July 21, I will sideline my riding to teach other girls. Happy Ramblers is going to be reserved for the school on that Saturday. My Dad will be working the grill to serve lunch, while I will be teaching. Then, at the end of the day, my sponsors have generously donated some products that I will be giving away to the girls. So, all you ladies who have an interest in those two wheel racing machines, give me a call to reserve your spot! Arrangements may be made for some girls who do not own a motorcycle or equipment to rent for the day. -Kelsey Green #48 (717) 683-2240

What are the biggest differences between Iceland and the US? The tracks here have a lot more jumps and are more technical. Our tracks are more natural terrain style, like in Europe. I’ve only saw a few tracks so far so it’s hard to say. And of course the amount of racers! Also I’m not used to all driving to go racing… takes a long time!

Yeap, Motocross is truly universal and the USA is the center of that universe. Icelander MXer Viktor Gudbergsson, a soft-spoken well-educated 15-yearold, chose D6 for his US racing premiere. Son of an International stuntman and multi times Rally car champion Beggie Gudbergsson, Vik was dreaming of becoming a Grand prix racer. But, via a common friend and a hook up from CrossRoad Powersports, he’s got the opportunity to come here and get his feet wet. Imagine yourself traveling from a country (and Island) of 300.000 peoples and 150 mx racers, to the biggest and toughest place to race on the planet! But the size of your country has nothing to do with the amount of talent and passion you have for the sport. I have to admit that I didn’t know much about Iceland before meeting Vik and his father.. I find out that really cool peoples live there and the place look like a blast to ride and race, and it’s not as cold as you’ll think…

So Vik, what do think of America? It’s great! I love it! How would you describe the Icelandic MX scene? Well, we have about 150 racers and around 2500 off road riders. We have 10 outdoor tracks within 20 minutes of Reykjavik (the Capital). We have plenty of space to ride. Not bad! And you have a championship or a series? Yes, it’s only 5 races for 5 classes (85, women, 125, MX1 and MX2 witch are A and B, bike size of your choice). But we have a good time and the level is pretty good. Are you running up front? Yes, I won 3 out of 4 races and finish 3rd of the series in the 85 class.

How did you get into riding? When I was 6, I got a go-kart from my dad. I rode it around for 3 years but I really wanted a motorbike after my dad took me to see a motocross race. So he picked up a used beat up 01 RM 50 and he let me fix it by myself. He just told me what to do and I replaced all the bearings, tires, etc.. I rode it for a year, loved it and then I started racing at 10 years old.

Cool! How many girls who raced? About 20 or so, but it represent over 15% of the total racer. The best woman rider is my age and we are in the same school and same class! What is your program for the summer? I’m here for three months with Frenchie training, racing and traveling, getting used to the US. It’s great and really intense. Next year I’d like to do the Loretta Lynn, it will be cool. Anybody you’ll like to thanks? My dad for giving me such a great opportunity, CrossRoad Powersports in Upper Darby for my bike and RRP to set it up, Frenchie for taking care of me and teaching me the ropes, and to everybody that I meet so far, everybody is very nice to me! Thanks Viktor and have fun this summer!

Your father is a rally car champion, how come you’re not into cars yourself? I guess because he let me chose what I like to do and doesn’t try to push me in a particular direction. Plus he rode bikes too. My 19 years old sister is into car racing, that what she like.. and my mom race mx in the women class.

The MDRA Race Series continues to attract over 650 racers to each round. The first group up on the day was the Vet C division. You can see these guys on this months cover and I tell you what, they are as excited about racing as are the youth and the amateur and expert riders. Two of them approached me during the day wanting to know if I got that holeshot picture claiming they were the first guy there. Well, they say a picture tells a thousand Round # 3 of the MDRA Race Series found itself stories, you decide. In the end it was Jose Lemus at Tomahawk MX in Hedgesville, WV the third with the win. weekend in May. Again over 650 riders came out Next up were the 125 A and B groups. In the A to participate on this day making this the largest division it would be Fastmann Racing sponsored rider turnout series in the region. The weekend Patrick Wastler getting the good start with West started off with a Saturday practice during the Shore Suzuki’s Willy Toth ending up the victor on day followed by pit bike racing in the late the day. Toth is just getting back from an early afternoon. Sunday rolled around for race day season injury, but seemed in top form at this round. Toth performed well in the 250 A motos as and the gates were full and the racers were well finishing second overall behind Chad ready to rock. Wages. Other hot racing action on the day included the 85cc (12-15) B division. Tony Archer would be your winner but the battle for second was tremendous between Cody Lunceford and Steven Sparks with Lunceford getting the edge for the position. In the mini ranks over 53 entries showed up between the Junior and Senior Mini classes with TBT’s Dylan Brajkovich winning Senior and Steven Sparks winning Junior. The next to the last class of the day brought the Women to the line with ten entries on the gate. Kelsey Green and n i acing r e r fi Jessica Childs would battle thru out n o y is . s s a l c the motos with the overall going to Sean Baxle C ) 7-11 the 65cc ( Green. You can get all the details on

Round #4

Under New Ownership Wow, have you checked this place out lately? The Evansville Motocross park that is. In August of 2006, Duane and Tracy Fisher took over a race track that had developed a reputation for inconsistency and deterioration. The former owners had come to an end of an era and Evansville needed new blood to rejuvenate it to its former status as of one of the nicest tracks in the Northeast. Fast forward to the present and find a couple with passion for the sport and the willingness to improve and invest in their facility to make it better for the racers of D6 and the surrounding region. Please don’t let the name fool you either, not only does Evansville offer a really cool natural terrain motocross track, but the Fishers have expanded and improved their supercross track and they have added a harescramble course. Evansville is part of the D6 Ultimate MX Series,

they have their own Supercross series and they are holding Harescramble races in both the PA State and the Northeast Harescramble Series. In addition to all that they offer open practice times at their facility on specific non race days. Wow, or did I already say that. It seems that Evansville offers something for everybody no matter what your fancy. If you haven’t checked them out in a while I suggest you give them a try. You can get all the details on their website at www.evansvillemxpark.com. I know that there are plenty of opportunities to compete at Evansville yet this year. They are giving away a couple of motorcycles and an ATV and they are offering up a free Pig Roast at their Ultimate MX race on August 5th. Check out their ads here in MRA or log onto the web, then grab your buddies and your machines and point the truck towards Berwick, PA. Both bikes and quads are welcome so we look forward to seeing you there.

Raceway Park - AMA Supermoto June 3, 2007

Defending Supermoto champion Jeff Ward had to settle for second in the Supermoto class. When the AMA was looking for a Northeast point to take its 2007 National series, Englishtown was the most logical choice. The facility was the perfect venue and their brand new road course would be the site of the inaugural event. But for a Supermoto to be exciting there has to be a dirt section as well. So practice track designer Carl Anderson was called in to create two exciting motocross style jump sections that received rave reviews from the competitors. Since the series is still in its infancy the pits are an open style with no extra ticket required to get up close and personal with the men (and woman) and their machines. The series is contested by all of the major manufacturers and the entry list reads like a who’s who of motorcycle racing. From motocrossers like David Pingree and Jeff Ward, freestylers like Carey Hart, World Gp riders like Kurt Nicoll and the man behind Troy Lee Designs, Troy Lee himself this sport has it all. Sunday’s event was lightly attended due to the rain in the forecast for the afternoon but those who came to the race saw excellent competition in all three professional classes. Hot Wheels Supermoto Lites Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Brandon Currie took the class win after taking the pole in his qualifier. He grabbed the early lead running Troy Lee Designs Honda rider wide in the first turn and never looked back. If he did get the chance to see behind him his goggles would have been full of Pingree who kept the Yamaha rider in his sights ready to make the move when Currie would make a mistake. That mistake never came and Currie went on to take the win with Pingree in second and Monster Kawasaki rider Matt Abbott in third. M&R Supermoto Unlimited Factory Aprilia Rip It Energy Racing’s Ben Carlson was the class of the Unlimited field taking the

advantage from the pole and stretching his lead to a multi second advantage before backing it down to a close race by the end. Factory HMC KTM teammates Kurt Nicoll and Johnny Lewis rounded out the top three. AMA Supermoto Premier Class Although the forecasted rain held off for most of the day, by the time the premier class got started there was a light but steady drizzle coming down. Troy Lee Designs Honda rider Cassidy Anderson grabbed the early lead only to throw it away in the first slippery dirt section. Anderson’s teammate Jeff Ward and Motorsports Graves Yamaha mounted Mark Burkhart showed the rest of the field that this was to be their race eventually Brandamore Pennsylvania’s John pulling out to a 20+ second Lewis rounded out the Unlimited lead. Ward and Burkhart battled each other tooth and class podium on his KTM. nail as the track conditions deteriorated. Burkhart would go on to take the victory 4+ seconds over Ward with factory KTM rider Troy Complete Results at: Herfoss rounding out the podium. www.amasupermoto.com It looks like Supermoto racing is here to stay in the Northeast. With tight racing and exciting action it appears to be around for awhile. Check it out next time it’s around.

and Nick Henderson. In the last event before intermission, Sportsman, Yoder’s time was the slowest of four, behind Wood, Mullen and Chris Klinefelter.

85 (7-11) winner (41), Colton Smith

Mason-Dixon:

Jacob Shoemaker was awarded three wins in the rain shortened Mason Dixon Fairgrounds short track. The Delta/Cardiff Fire Company sponsored event fell victim to the rains that seem to have followed every Saturday night short track events in this area since April. Unlike the previous rain outs this season, this one was several small rain falls that gradually made the track unworkable. The decision was made when the first final of the evening, Open A, had three riders slide out on the slick surface. With the weather turning cooler and the moisture starting to come back to the surface, the riders felt it was not safe to ride on. Despite heroic efforts by track crew to iron it out, finals were paid by starting positions in the final. In the Open A and Sportsman finals, the difference between first and fourth was a second or so. Shoemaker had fastest heat times in the 250 B, Open A and 250 Sportsman. In the 250 B and 250 B

Getting Sideways with Cory Texter

Hey Everyone, Hopefully everyone is having a good and safe season so far. The weather has been pretty good to us this last month and I’m finally starting to develop a pretty snazzy tan. Well, the last couple of weeks have been hectic for me. May 18th and 19th we were in Guthrie, Oklahoma for a big Boo Koo Dirt Track race. Stock frame chassis only. All of the big names were there and we decided to head out there for a warm-up race before my next national which was held on May 26 in Springfield, Illinois. I was very excited to race these guys on a much better track then Daytona after months of hard work and getting used to my new bikes, I felt more then ready. Our First race was the TT. I qualified 12th out of 45 riders. I only got one good session in. They give us three and the first session, I was getting used to the track and then the 2nd session we had a red flag and the third session I crashed on the first lap. I lined up for my heat race starting 4th over from the inside. It was Kopp, Carr, Schnabel, Me, Bergen, and J. Halbert. It is still such a thrill lining up with these guys. It didn’t intimidate me much as I snagged the holeshot going into turn one. I went in a little hot and almost smacked the wall coming off turn two, and Kopp, Schnabel, and Carr all went by. I passed Carr going into the infield first corner on the outside and I hit the jump, and I went into the right hander on the outside of Schnabel and squared him off for a pass on the inside and he

checked up because Kopp was in front of him and I high sided off his rear wheel and stalled my engine. I couldn’t re-start my motor and a back row, outside-start starting spot for my semi made it almost impossible for me to get into the top two to make the final. It was a bummer, because if I would of had a little bit more patience, I would of possibly made a pass and if not at least make the main because they took the top 4. Oh well, I learned from it and it gave me a big boost of confidence knowing my speed is right there to run with those guys. I just made a rookie mistake. The next day on the short track we were struggling with some set-up. We made some changes and it helped but it was still not enough to move me onto the front row in the heat race. I came from the back row and I was already up to 4th when a rider in front of me fell and I hit his bike. My boot got caught on my footpeg and I got drilled from behind and I broke my ankle and sprained my wrist. My day was done. I came home and they told me that I would need surgery if I ever wanted to walk properly on my left ankle again. I got surgery two days later where they put in 2 screws. As we speak I am recovering and doing physical therapy so I can race the first Junior 750 race on June 23. It is an 8 race series with 7 clay half miles and 1 cushion half mile. I am really excited and I won’t be satisfied with anything less then the number one plate. The next AMA Singles National takes place as

a doubleheader in Castle Rock, Washington on August 10th and 11th. It is a great facility and I am totally excited to go back there, now as a pro expert rider. The TT is on the 10th and the Short Track is on the 11th. After Joliet, I will be attending the AMA Amateur Nationals in Duquoin, Illinois helping my sister Shayna go for the AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award to bring it back to District 6 and Pennsylvania. She has a great chance and has some great competition ahead of her. After that, I can come home and rest before we head to our next junior national July 14th in Saluda, Virginia. Then we’re off to some more local races before my “hometown” track at Hagerstown, Maryland on July 28th which is going to be Round 3 of the Junior 750 series. Jared Mees currently holds a slim lead over Kenny Coolbeth in the AMA Twins Series with Jake Johnson leading the AMA Singles

Championship as well as the Overall Championship on the factory Suzuki bikes. Until the next issue, be safe and have a great July. I hope to do the same!

NJ Motocross otlight Rider Sp t Lukaitis By Scot

The state of New Jersey has a rich history in motocross racing. From the early days of Micky Kessler to today’s stars like Jason Lawrence and Barry Carsten, New Jersey riders have always had that something special. My new website www.njmotocross.com was designed to explore that history and the riders who made it. Below is the next in a series of interviews with some of New Jersey’s most well known racers. This month’s NJ Motocross.com New Jersey Rider Spotlight is:

Tommy Ulikowski You are a well recognized figure around Raceway Park. Tell us a little about yourself. I’m 33 years old and own Robertsville Landscaping. I race 25+, 30+ expert and pit bikes, and I live in Bayville NJ with my wife and two dogs. How long have you been racing? I started in 1988 so 19 years What got you started in racing? My neighbor had a track and raced and my brother and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. That year my mom worked two jobs to get us each a CR 80 for Christmas and we’ve been riding ever since.

What is your involvement with Raceway Park? I started out as an instructor at the Jay Irwin motocross school, and I became more involved as the years went on, helping Jay, Richie Zupko, and Mickey Kessler from picking up garbage to helping with the track design. Do you have a favorite Raceway Park memory? My all time favorite memory was the 1997 Kawasaki Race of Champions, when my buddy Joel Dengler got the holeshot and led most of the race to finish 3rd behind Jeff Emig and Ryan Hughes. Your brother Shawn has been a factory mechanic for several years now and even has a Supercross Championship to his credit. Do you make him work on your bike when he comes home for the holidays? Shawn is very busy with his rider, Travis Preston, who can’t even lube his chain, so I give him a break and let him just chill when he’s home. However, he does show me the way things are done on the factory bikes when he can, and that’s pretty cool. What does the sport of motocross mean to you? I love the energy and adrenaline that I get from racing, there is nothing like going into the first turn with 39 other guys, but I also love this sport because I not only met my best friends racing, it’s where I met my wife Joy. She was a score girl at Powerline Park and thanks to the Zupko’s I have a great wife. You have a tight knit group of racing friends, how important to you is the social aspect of the motocross community? As much as I love racing, I probably wouldn’t ride as much if it wasn’t for the fact that all my friends are there. Raceway is like a second home to me and the people are as important as the racing. You are a top competitor in both the regular race series and the pit bike series. Do you enjoy the pit bike or big bike racing more? The big bike is serious racing and the pit bikes series is all about having fun. I wish I could get the results on the big bike that I get on the pit bike, but I enjoy both. Who would you like to thank for helping you out in your racing career? My brother Shawn, if it wasn’t for him my bikes would be junk, my mom for getting me started, Mickey Kessler at KPS, Kenny Watson, Ken Landerman, the Zupkos , the Irwins, the Denglers, Buford at Utopia and my parts guy Scott Lukaitis.

This month I have a few quick tips from Brad “twinkie” Keeney from Keeney / TBT racing. Here’s some of Brad’s tips: - Carb hoses: Keep your drain / overflow hoses routed to below your bike or quad, but run the vent lines into your airbox. You can drill some holes the exact size needed (to keep dirt and water out) and secure them with zip ties. This will keep them from blocking with mud. - If you’re riding a 4-stroke, check the freeplay in your hot start cable. If your cable is too tight, it can open when the steering is turned. - If you run a holeshot device on your forks, don’t over tighten the clamp around your fork tube. This can cause that fork leg to bind. Don’t believe it? Next time you have forks off, over-tighten the clamp and work the forks individually. You’ll see the difference. - Always break in a fresh motor with a petroleum based oil, the synthetic oils don’t allow the rings to seat properly. - If you’re using oxygenated fuels such as VP’s ultimate 4, don’t store your fuel in a plastic jug. The vapors pass through the plastic of both the jug as well as you bike’s plastic gas tank. That’s why most tank graphics are perforated. I use a plastic gas jug during race day, but then dump the fuel

back into the metal can until the next riding session. This is also the same reason we’re seeing many of the factory bikes such as Ricky Carmichael’s using aluminum tanks. - Again if you’re using oxygenated fuels, don’t use one of those short gas cap vent hoses with the metal top. The vapors are too heavy and don’t pass through the one-way vent top. Keep the long type vent hose that came with your bike. - One more tip for oxygenated fuels. If you’re in a high altitude or very hot weather, you may have to mix your fuel 50/50 with pump gas. Keeping your fuel cool is also very important. Many of the factory teams are even keeping their fuel tanks in ice before a moto. If you’re a serious rider, here’s some more tips to keep your bike cool: ß Use Engine Ice or some other high performance coolant. ß Install a Boyesen high flow impeller kit ß Use a header wrap on your headpipe, CV4 makes a good one. ß Line the bottom of your fuel tank with a heat shield material to keep the engine heat away from your gas. I like the material from Moose. I hope some of these tips will help. Any questions or comments, email me at techtips@gapracing.com. -

Jeff Emig pi cks a winner.

Who knew clowns could ride? Who says you have to be an adult to make a difference. That is the line on their tshirts and it is true that a kid can make a difference. When 9 year old Rocky Cagno was inspired by the good deeds of his school in raising money for children with cancer through a lemonade stand he thought of a way to do more. Combining his want to help those in need and his love for the sport of motocross the MX Kids Racing for Hope was born. The first annual event was held in the fall of 2006 and with the help of 40 riders raising money through donations the group raised over $25,000. The second annual event was held on the 9th of June at Raceway Park in conjunction with their Youth Day event. Sunny skies and warm temperature greeted the riders and their families for this great event. A full schedule of motos were held and riders on bikes from 50s-90’s competed for their class victories. The local shops and sponsors got involved and bikes and gear were given away during a special intermission that even featured a riding demo by former National and Supercross champion Jeff Emig. Emig was on hand to lend his name to a great cause and he, combined with local rider Bobby Jimenez and former local John Sigismondi, put in a couple of laps to wow the crowd on hand. But the racing was secondary this afternoon as all of the donations were

By press time over $30,000 had been raised this year alone. going to The Institute for Children, now known as the Embrace Kids Foundation. This organization helps children and their families by providing counselors, educational teachers and financial assistance to those suffering with cancer. Sometimes who wins the moto is not important. The event was a huge success and as of this writing has raised over $30,000. In today’s me first society it is refreshing to see kids putting their best foot forward to help those in need. For more information on the Embrace Kids Foundation check out their website at www.embracekids.org Donations on behalf of the MX Kids Racing for Hope are still being accepted. Any help you can provide is appreciated.

RD #3 High Point Raceway - June 10,

Reaching the third round of the inaugural Cernics Suzuki Pennsylvania Regional Series, racers head back out to western Pennsylvania to the famous High Point Raceway. Although a hard rain swept the High Point area Friday evening, the track crew worked vigorously throughout the day on Saturday to have the track 100% for racing on Sunday. With a pro-am field filled with the top D6 Quad riders, it was sure to be a showdown in each moto. Two qualifying motos needed to be run to shake down the class to 20 worthy competitors. After an intermission for track maintenance, the 30 sec rose up and motors revved as the intensity grew for the final moto. Reaching the top of the uphill start was Mark Vaia aboard his Hybrid Honda. East Coast ATV Teammates, Tommy Fink and Randy Lehr were hot on his heels. Fink applied pressure as Lehr was searching for a good line for a pass. As they entered the six pack on the second lap, Lehr doubled through and catapulted into the lead. Behind Fink was a hard charging Andrew Travis. Travis would later drop out leaving the door open for Hetrick Racing’s Trent Kandel. While Lehr was checking out in the lead, the battle ensued for the remaining positions. With the checkered flag flying, it was Randy Lehr holding a 41 second lead over Mark Vaia. Tommy Fink crossed the finish line just inches behind Vaia as they drag raced down the last straight away. Would you believe $3.25 a gallon? Anybody else starting to feel the pinch, at the pumps I mean. There doesn’t seem to be a week that goes by that we don’t hear about gas prices on the rise. Storm in the gulf, prices go up. Bombing in London, prices go up. Sheik caught on toilet without TP, prices go up. You know I remember the first oil crisis, it was in the mid sixties and gas prices went from .30 cents a gallon to .60 cents almost overnight. It hit the racing community hard, the number of racers dropped by about half. I have to wonder how many people today have cut back on their racing as a result of the price of gas. I’m always frustrated when I watch TV and some

news program is telling me how to cut fuel consumption. It’s always the same thing, smaller cars, electric vehicles, hybrids, car pooling, public transportation. Does anyone notice whats always missing? That’s right Motorcycles/Scooters. They never ever mention the benefit of commuting on a Motorcycle, why is that I wonder. I’ve ridden street bikes since my first, a Suzuki GS450 back in 1983. Back then I rode simply because I loved to ride, it wasn’t to save money on gas because I don’t think I ever checked the fuel consumption. Since then I’ve gone through a host of different street models. Today I ride not just for the enjoyment but for a host of other reasons not the least of which is gas

mileage. I have to laugh when someone tells me they bought a bike to save money on gas and then proceed to tell me they www.reactive-suspension.com bought a GSXR1000. ride a 650cc twin, it won’t set any records for top There are a whole host of cars that get better mileage than a Gixxer 1000, speed or acceleration compared to many other but I guess in their defense maybe they were bikes but compared to 99% of the cars on the driving a big pick-up and only getting 12 mpg so road it will get to 60 mph way faster. My bike has over 28000 miles on it and currently supplies a bit over 30 mpg is a big improvement. Let me highlight all the benefits of street bike 55 - 65 MPG depending on how hard I run it. But ownership for those who until now haven’t given it the benefits go much further than that. Our roads are getting more and more congested. much thought. Saving money on gas has to be the biggest benefit in today’s economy. I currently The more people we get on bikes the more the congestion is reduced as well as pollution. I’m sure we’ve all sat at a stop sign looking left and right waiting for a big enough gap to allow us to pull out without ticking someone off, well with a motorcycle that gap is infinitely reduced because we can accelerate to the speed of the approaching traffic at least 3 times faster. Passing can also be done quicker over a shorter distance. Traffic congestion can be circumvented and I don’t mean flying between lines of standing traffic at 60 MPH. I remember riding down the Schuykill Expressway and traffic was constantly starting and stopping, when it did come to a stop I was able to keep moving between traffic at a steady 25 MPH. OK, OK, I know its probably frowned upon by the authorities but if done with caution its probably less dangerous than driving on the Schuykill. Finding a parking spot is simplicity itself because a bike takes up so little room. Cost to register a bike is half that of a car. As long as you’re not on a 175 MPH sport bike insurance can be very reasonable. Running costs are next to nothing, oil and filter from time to time and tires which with the right set might be every three years depending on how many miles you put on. Plus if you can work on your dirt bike you can do a lot of the maintenance and repairs yourself. I read an article in one of Cycle magazines that said a study showed that people who rode motorcycles to work arrived more alert and with more energy and it showed in their job performance. Another good reason. A motorcycle is definitely not as convenient as a car in that you toss the briefcase in the car park your butt in the seat and away you go. With a bike you need to suit up with the right gear and may need to secure any cargo you have. There are a host of available items to allow you to transport things on a bike. It’s amazing what you can do with a few bungee nets. I had a customer who would order a bunch of stuff each week and I would bring it home with me so he could pick it up at my house as it was closer for him. I remember lashing a 30” x 18” x 18 box to the seat and carrying three 180/55 - 17 tires, how you ask. I stacked the tires on the floor, stepped inside them and lifted them up under my arms and got on the bike, I’m sure I looked like the Michelin Mans cheap cousin but it worked. Riding in foul weather is probably the single biggest reason many people don’t ride but a good rain suit is all you need after all its water not battery acid. As a teenager my Dad rode his bikes all year long and that meant snow and ice, I draw the line at snow but until the snow flies I’ll ride With more and more vehicles on the road each year something needs to change, Motorcycles and Scooters are a viable alternative that can only be better for us all, and just think the more people we can convert the more that will understand our passion for dirt bikes which might lead to more riding areas. Sounds like a plan.

Nominations for PaOHV Executive Director Sought The PaOHV Board of Directors is seeking nominations for Executive Director for the Association. The Executive Director is the elected chair of the Association’s board of Directors. A full job description and qualifications can be found as part of the bylaws posted on www.paohv.org. Nominations should be submitted to Board members or club Representatives by the Association’s July 20 Board meeting. The Board will close nominations at that time and vote a candidate will be selected at the Association’s October meeting. The successful candidate will fill the unexpired term vacated by Greg Hamill earlier this year. Mr. Hamill resigned to devote time to local pursuits on behalf of the OHV community and to devote more time to his family. Two and one half years remain in the term.

Summer of 2007 As I sit here pondering on what subjects to write about, my mind can’t help but wonder off to our Sunday plans. My Wife and I plan to attend a much anticipated dice run with our friends and fellow club members in McKean County Pennsylvania. Located next to the New York-Pennsylvania border, high in the Appalachian Mountain chain, one might compare the mountains and scenery to that of our friends to our south in West Virginia. Nonetheless the ride throughout this pristine area is one of true enjoyment. With gas prices clipping our wings this year, we have really been looking forward to this ride. Our friends in the McKean chapter of the club have several dice runs each year. They are lucky enough to have so many areas to ride that they never hold a run on the same trails in each year. This first dice run of the year will be June 10th at the Otto Twp. Fire Hall. This is the run my wife and I are attending tomorrow. This run will already have taken place by the time this goes into print. The weather forecast is supposed to be perfect, and I am betting that if you went, you had a great ride. The McKean Chapter’s next run will be Aug 5 at the Eldred Twp. Fire Hall Dice Run. To get to Eldred Twp. Fire Hall, head for Bradford Pa. Traveling on rte. 219 coming in to Bradford, you will exit off at the Foster Brook exit, make a left and follow rte. 346 east for about 16 miles to make a left on the Wind Fall Rd. The Fire Hall is on the right. It’s the last run for the year, and in my estimation it’s the best because of the autumn season, it is Oct. 7, 2007, at the Rew Fire Hall. To get to the Rew Fire Hall, head for Bradford PA. Traveling on rte 219 to Bradford, you will exit at the Foster Brook exit and make a right. Go to the traffic light, and make a left. About a mile down the road you will go under an underpass where you will pick-up rte. 46. Follow rte. 46 east for about 10 miles. At the stop sign make a right and you’ll find the Rew Fire Hall on left. With summer upon us, there will be many rides and special events to attend within and outside our club. Our membership participates in as many poker and dice runs as we can during the year, most of which take place in the spring, summer and autumn. The many Parades, ATV Jamborees, club picnics and trail rides keep us busy on weekends when dice runs are not going on. As you might have guessed by now, not just in our summer

months, but our entire year is packed with things to do with our ATV Traction family. The members of this club are separated by miles only. Under the wing of ATV Traction, no one is an outsider. All these events are shared with our families, both young and old. We not only have good times, but much of the proceeds from our club events are donated to help other organizations and charities throughout Western Pa. ATV Traction has embarked on a new and very important project. We have set forth to make ATV Youth Safety Training a priority for not only the youth in our club, but for all the kids we can get to participate. Pennsylvania State law states that in order for any child 8-15 years of age to ride an ATV off of their own property, he/she must possess a DCNR safety training certificate. We have approximately fifteen club members who are approved DCNR ATV Youth Safety Instructors. Many more signed up to receive the necessary training to become instructors in July. They not only teach the proper riding skills, maneuvers, and proper use of safety gear to ensure safe riding but also instill the ideals of Tread Lightly. It has become an increasing concern of all when we hear of the tragic accidents that may have been avoidable if only our youth had the proper training. We offer this training free of charge, donations acceptable, with all expense being absorbed by the chapter holding the training. We encourage all parents of young ATV riders to consider some type of training for their children. Regardless of training, always make sure your children as well as yourself wear the appropriate safety gear at all times. Space limits us from adding all of our activities to this entry, but if you think you might be interested in joining us at a dice run, attending a club meeting or just out of curiosity finding out more about us, you can check out our club web site for more information: www.atvtraction.org. We hope to see many of you along the trails this summer and to make many new friends as well. May God Bless every ride so We May Live to ride another day.

(Sorry quad riders, but I ran out of space to go into quad tires. Next month.) First and foremost this is a basic guide to tire selection for beginner motocrossers, harescramblers and trail riders. This guide will help you make a more informed selection of what tire you run and why. Tire selection is an often-overlooked performance enhancement. Regardless of the amount of motor or suspension work you have done, if the knobs on your tire have lost the sharp edge, none of it matters. Putting the power to the ground and holding your line are greatly affected by the condition and type of tire you have. The factors that affect this are: tire compound, tread pattern and air pressure. First and foremost, let’s look at what makes up a wheel assembly. A wheel assembly is made up of: the rim, spokes, rubber rim strip, rim locks, an inner tube and the tire. It is important that the rim is true and straight and that the spokes are tight. The rubber rim strip should be elastic and not torn. The tube should be replaced every time the tire is

dismounted. The rim lock(s) should be in good overall condition and the rubber should be secured to the metal stem. And the tire should be in good condition; sharp edge on knobs, beads in good shape, etc. Moving on to the tires. The first thing we will look at is tread patterns and compounds. There are many different patterns and compounds available. Your tread pattern is the actual location of the knobs on the tire. (The rubber blocks that protrudes off the circumference of the tire itself). Compound is the overall softness or stiffness of the tread blocks. Generally hard compounds work well in soft terrain … mud, loose dirt and sand. These tires usually have a tread pattern of large spacing between the tread blocks to promote “self-cleaning”. (The act in which a tires groove is cleaned by wheel rotation and centrifugal force and nothing else). Soft compounds are better suited for harder terrain … hard packed ground and hard clay. These tires feature a tighter tread pattern to better conform to the ground and allow more rubber contact to the ground. An Intermediate tire compound is available to give us something in between. This tire is good for harescramble riding where you are exposed to various conditions of wet muddy loose dirt, tree roots, rocks and hard packed ground. There are two types: hard to intermediate, and soft to intermediate. The next thing to look at is air pressure. Adjusting the air pressure is done to allow a certain tire compound to conform to a certain terrain to achieve maximum traction. Generally lower air pressure is used with a hard compound tire and soft terrain and a slightly higher pressure for soft compounds and hard terrain. I cannot offer you a set air pressure as each rider varies in what he or she likes. Generally, 8 to 10 psi is the minimum I would recommend and 16 to 18 psi the max. While on the subject of air pressure, we should take a look at puncture protection. Run too low of an air pressure and you could pinch a tube on a hard landing or slamming into a rock. There are many gimmicks offered to us to prevent this, but I have yet to find a liquid that I can put in the tube before hand that seals pinches and punctures as they occur. What I have found that works really well is heavy-duty inner tubes. These tubes are extremely thick and resist pinches very well. They are heavier however, and this could hurt performance on a small bore bike, so keep that in mind when deciding whether or not to run them. What they do not resist is punctures from a shape pointed object; (i.e. a nail). There are several other options available as well to offer added protection. Tire Balls are a bunch of rubber balls that are inserted between the rim and tire. Air pressure is adjusted in each individual ball to achieve your desired air pressure. Dunlop offers a Crescent Mousse, which also fits between the tire and rim. You can read more about this at www.dunlopmotorcycle. com.

Senate Committee to Consider Amendment to Recreational Use Law

History and Background Last year and again in April 2007, PaOHV issued an alert seeking co-sponsors for legislation amending the Recreational Use of Land and Waters Act (RULWA). The introduction and passage of legislation is among one of the strategies PaOHV has been pursuing to improve accessibility to land for riding. Sen. Bob Robbins (RCrawford) reintroduced the legislation as SB 497. The bill has been referred to the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. Common sense legal reform is the core of this issue. Private land owners must be granted protections from the costs of litigation filed by overreaching lawyers. Until land owners are protected from the cost abusive and baseless lawsuits, there is little or no incentive for landowners to allow the use of private land for any To the incidental recreational use. contrary, the current system promotes a climate of fear and intimidation preventing landowners from utilizing their properties as they desire including loaning it to others for recreational use. Senator Robbins’ bill provides attorney’s fees for defendant landowners when cases brought against them are found to be baseless and without merit. The Robbins bill creates a firewall for landowners protecting them from enormous costs of opportunistic lawsuits. Late last month, the House of Representatives passed HB 13 which also amends RULWA. The bill provides for marginal tort protection for landowners in cases where hunting accidents occur. While minimally useful for its prescribed purpose, HB 13 is exceptionally narrow and fails to address many greater outstanding issues regarding landowner liability. HB 13 currently resides in the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee.

The Senate must decide whether to take action HB 13 and whether to correct the deficiencies of the legislation as it currently written. This presents the OHV community with an extraordinary opportunity to broaden the scope of protections afford to landowners. Senator Robbins and PaOHV are pressing for the language of SB 497 to be amended into HB 13 as part of a large omnibus amendment that will expand the definitions of recreational activities. If amended, HB 13 would provide all of the additional protections for landowners who allow people to hunt, ride and otherwise recreate on their property. Therefore, it will be easier for individuals and clubs to find places on which to engage in OHV activities.

Bill Gibble sports the new SX approved headgear. The Pagoda Motorcycle Club in Birdsboro, PA kicked off the month of June with their 1st of two Supercross races that they will be holding in 2007. The race was co - sponsored by the Sleepy Hollow MX Park in Fredericksburg, PA. JR’s Cycle of Ephrata, PA brought the starter girls and the holeshot awards. They offered up $20.00 gift certificates to the riders that grabbed the holeshot in the main event motos on the night. As always the Pagoda club members were out in force offering up games for kids, Gatorade for the racers and just generally making sure that everyone was having a good time. The race turnout was low on this night, but all that came seemed to enjoy the Pagoda course. Some classes were combined to keep the racing exciting with the 25+ and 40+ racers kicking off the action. The crazy Frenchman, Greg Pamart was on hand, Pamart took the win over Erik Schuster in second and Ben Hoffman in third. Dave Green would get the win in Senior racing action. In 65 cc racing, Scotty Stockunas of Gap Racing fame would win the qualifier but it would be Ronald Perry turning it up to win the main event. Both 85cc divisions would take to the track on a split gate and it was DMX’s Rowland Papp winning the (7-11) group and LVC’s Patrick Sharkey grabbing the (12-15) win. In other action, Michelle Kastle would race the women’s class and her brother Ritchie would race to the 125 C win. There was some guy named Gibble testing some new Mexican headgear and 1 fast kid on a 50 showed up and raced against the 65’s. All in all I think everyone had fun and found themselves with lots of track time, 8 lap qualifiers and 10 lap main events. In all seriousness, Pagoda builds an excellent and safe SX course. If your available on Saturday

Nutrition & Fitness Thru Jay’s Eyes

Water, Ades, Energy Drinks and Race Day Foods Hydration is quite possibly one of the most important factors that affect how an athlete is able to perform. Since the human body consists of ninety percent water it is hard to imagine how someone would be able to perform consistently at their maximum level without being properly hydrated. All of the major functions of the body are dictated by the amount of water present in your cells. Even movement or possibly life itself would be hard to imagine without the presence of water. This substance is one of the most important building blocks of life, and should be respected and guaranteed to all. For all athletes water should be their drink of choice, this is because it gives you everything you need; providing you are a generally healthy person and you have been eating right. If for some reason you have not been able to eat much that day it might be a good idea to drink some Gatorade or PowerAde slowly throughout the day. Do not substitute the Gatorade/PowerAde for water because it contains a high amount of sugars that will just end up making you edgy and then tire much faster. Energy drinks should not be consumed on a day of activity, because all these drinks contain nothing that actually gives you long lasting usable energy. If you drink these during race day you will most defiantly feel a burst of energy followed by a hard “bonk” that leaves you unable to regain momentum throughout the day. If you want to perform your very best nothing will ever beat proper nutrition, proper rest and good hydration. When you drink Gatorade or PowerAde as a water substitute you take in an enormous amount of carbohydrates that were derived from corn. (aka high fructose corn syrup) Carbohydrates derived from corn are long chain molecules which are harder for your body to break down. The reason you get an energy rush from these drinks is because your carbohydrate flooded body is attempting to rid it self of excess energy before refueling. That is also why you get the “bonk” or sudden loss of energy, because your body switches from expending it’s excess to breaking down the new carbs. In contrast to this phenomenon fruit derived carbohydrates

share a special relationship with our body. The carbs contained in any fruit that is not a member of the grass family are almost instantly broken down when eaten by humans. This is most likely because humans evolved in the jungles of the world where fruit was plentiful, and as we evolved we became very effective at obtaining energy from the food we most often ate. The enzymes in your saliva and stomach have the unique ability to break down carbs and amino acids from fruit faster and with greater efficiency, than nutrients from other sources. On race day there is an array of foods that are great to keep you going and will not bog you down. Most large quantities of meat are extremely detrimental to your energy level, because meat is the most complex food your body can break down. This means that every time you eat meat huge amounts of blood goes to your stomach in an attempt to break it all down. This causes other parts of your body like your brain and muscles to suffer from a decreased level of blood flow. If you want to be able to perform correctly on race day you need to adhere to a strict diet of fruits, vegetables and possibly small portions of fish or eggs in the morning. As far as what you should drink, water is all you need. Unless, you wish to mix up a celebration drink to enjoy after the race, leave the Red Bull at home, because it will only bring you down in the end.

ar National Yamaha AllMXSt - June 2-3, 2007 Doublin Gap

The annual Yamaha All Star National came to Doublin Gap MX Park the weekend of June 1-3, 2007. The event was sponsored by Yamaha Motor Corporation and local Yamaha dealers, Action Motorsports, B & B Yamaha and Yamaha of Camp Hill. The event was also a Round # 1 makeup from April of the D6 Ultimate MX Series and featured Suzuki and Kawasaki contingency as well as double D6 Points. The action started off on Friday with a practice day on Doublin’s main track followed by a warm up race on Saturday and the All Star National on Sunday. The Four Stroke Open division got things started off on Sunday with local expert rider Tyler Witmer going at it with School Boy ace Garret Toth. Witmer would have a slight edge going into the first turn but Toth would quickly get by and race on to the victory. Watch Toth as we approach the Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynns, he is a true contender and will most likely be at the top of both School Boy divisions after the dust settles in August. Today’s race brought many youth riders from out of the immediate area to prepare for the youth regional happening here at the end of June. The results showed riders from New York, North Carolina and Virginia at the top of the lists as the battle continues on the road to Loretta’s. As always at a big race like this the 250 expert racing action was red hot. In the end it would be Derrick Wile with the overall over names like Carsten, Cook and Plotts. Plotts was challenging at the end of moto one but went down in the commandments right before finish line and Carsten was off pace with an early moto crash that slowed him down. Not to discredit Wile, the local A racer has been red hot this season and is notching wins all over the area. Doublin Gaps next race is a MDRA round on July 14 -15. It starts Saturday with a practice day and pit bike racing and rolls into a Sunday race offering Yamaha, KTM and Suzuki contingencies. If you’re looking for competition, check out this race as the MDRA is averaging well over 600 riders per event. Get the details at www.doublingap.com and check out race photos at www.mcracingaction.com.

2007 Ultimate District 6 Motocross Championship Series Round 5: Hurricane Hills Motocross By Jim Sanderson Clifford, PA, June 10, 2007

Now in its third year, the Ultimate District Six Motocross series continues to grow and offers some of the best competition and contingencies of any series on the east coast. Five rounds now feature factory contingency from Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha and Husqvarna, two rounds feature contingency from Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda and Husqvarna and five rounds feature at least one factory and some up to three factory contingencies. Rounds that don’t offer factory contingency will award double District Six points. At the conclusion of the series, the top three riders in each class will be awarded series jackets, merchandise and more at the annual Ultimate District Six Championship Series banquet. Round five of the series was hosted by the Fritz’s at the Hurricane Hills Motocross facility in Clifford, Pennsylvania. Hurricane Hills just recently made changes to the racecourse, including a second “Elevator” jump in line directly behind the originally famous “Hurricane Hills Elevator”. Hurricane Hills also features the “Ten Commandments” a rhythm section originally made famous at Loretta Lynn’s. Local Pro/Expert Kawasaki rider, Damien Plotts topped the extremely competitive over 30 A class with two first place finishes. In the first outing, Plotts got off the gate fourth and took the point by the fifth turn of lap one. Plotts was never challenged for the lead for the rest of the moto, taking the checkers with a six second advantage. Plotts did much better on his start in the final moto by leading the pack out of the second turn and again rode wire to wire for the win with another six second lead. Kawasaki pilot, Gaylon Dickson took the second tier of the podium with a 4-2 performance and Darren Edsall completed the podium with a 2-4 score. Mike Spear, Edsall, Dickson, Plotts and Joe Fritz Sr. lead the start of the opening over 30 A moto. Plotts quickly moved to the front, taking the point after only a quarter of a lap. Edsall moved to second, Spear dropped to third, Dickson dropped to fourth and Anthony Poccia completed the top five. Plotts started the third lap three seconds ahead of Edsall. Kurt McMillen, who started the moto just outside the top five, was now pressuring Poccia for fifth and made the pass to take the position before the start of lap four. Meanwhile, Plotts continued to add to his lead, starting the fourth lap with a four second advantage. Dickson had by now closed the gap on Spear in third but couldn’t quite get close enough to make a pass due to lapped traffic. Plotts took the checkered flag six seconds ahead of Edsall. Spear, Dickson and McMillen closed out the top five. Plotts, Spear, Poccia, McMillen and Dickson lead the start of the final over 30 A moto. McMillen moved to third before the end of lap one, displacing Poccia to fourth. Dickson quickly moved up to challenge Poccia but couldn’t make a pass until the infield section of lap two. Poccia was relegated to fifth. On lap three, Plotts lead was three seconds when Spear went down on the downhill triple. Plotts lead instantly doubled as McMillen inherited the runner-up spot followed by Dickson, Edsall and Poccia. Dickson closed the gap on McMillen and got within striking distance by the white flag lap. With only one turn to go, Dickson dove to the inside and made the pass on McMillen. Plotts got the win with another six second advantage. Dickson, McMillen, Edsall and Poccia closed out the top five. Robert Piazza, Austin Behrens, Kyle Dillin, Ryan Mauro and Luke Palonicola lead the start of the first 85cc 9-13 division moto. Greg Sidebothom took over the point just before the start of lap two, relegating Piazza to second. Palonicola, Kevin Hicks Jr., and Austin Behrens rounded out the top five. Piazza re-took the lead on the infield section of the racecourse on lap two. Sidebothom was relegated to second. At the start of lap three, Piazza’s lead was two and a half seconds. The gap

separating Sidebothom in second and Palonicola in third was a whopping 13 seconds. Sidebothom reeled Piazza in and re-took the lead on lap four and held on to take the win. Piazza, Palonicola, Behrens and Mauro closed out the top five. Piazza, Sidebothom, Palonicola, Dillin and Behrens lead the start of the final 85cc 9-13 moto. Sidebothom quickly got around Piazza to take the lead after only a half lap. Piazza was displaced to second. Behrens passed Dillin in the rhythm section taking fourth just before the start of lap two. Dillin was relegated to fifth. Sidebothom got out of shape in the rhythm section on lap two and went down hard. Piazza inherited the point and a healthy lead after Sidebothom crashed. Palonicola, Behrens, Matt Mansine and Dillin all advanced. Sidebothom remounted dead last. At the start of lap four, Piazza’s lead was seven seconds and the top four were all spreading out when Sidebothom came ripping through the pack to eventually finish the moto in fourth. Piazza took the checkers nine seconds ahead of Palonicola. Behrens, Sidebothom, and Mauro rounded out the top five. Piazza (2-1) took the overall. Palonicola (3-2) took second and Sidebothom (1-4) third. Honda Pilot, Matt Vacendak, Zac Zopp, Frank Lettieri, Jimmy Ide and Andrew Mikolaichik lead the start of the first Open 4-Stroke division moto. Lettieri had the point by the third turn and quickly pulled away to start lap two with a six second lead. Vacendak held second followed by Mikolaichik, Ide and Jonathan McDermott. Mikolaichik passed Vancendak to take second at the end of lap two. Vacendak dropped to third. Lettieri started the third lap with a ten second advantage. The top four were all spread out when Justin Maylath passed McDermott taking fifth. Lettieri began the white flag lap with a 14-second lead and increased it to 17 seconds at the checkers. Mikolaichik, Ide, Vacendak and Maylath closed out the top five. Lettieri, Vacendak, Maylath, Mikolaichik and Joe Fritz jr. led the start of the final Open 4-Stroke moto. Lettieri set a blistering pace and quickly pulled away and started lap two six seconds ahead of Mikolaichik, who had just passed Vacendak to take second just prior to the start of lap two. Half way into lap three, Lettieri’s lead had doubled to 12seconds. Mikolaichik was a solid second followed by Ide, Maylath and Fritz. Lettieri increased his advantage to a staggering 18-seconds by lap four and took the checkered flag 22-seconds ahead of Mikolaichik. Ide, Maylath, and William Hauser completed the top five. Lettieri topped the podium with a perfect 1-1. Mikolaichik’s consistent 2-2 rides earned him runner-up and Ide rounded out the podium with a consistent 3-3 tally.

taineer MDRA At Mo0,un200 7 June 9-1

Round # 4 of the MDRA Race Series took place back at the scenic Mountaineer Raceway in Inwood, WV. This was the second trip here this year for the MDRA and close to 550 competitors came out to battle for the class championship points. The racing was exciting in many classes with near full gates, and in some cases two divisions in the novice classes. The mini gates were full as well with young racers eager to compete for those year end MDRA bucks. The race results for this round came in real close to our deadline so we thought we would offer up a photo gallery this time out. By the time this issue goes to print you’ll be able to log onto the MDRA website at: www.mdramxracing.com to see how your favorite racers did. You can also view hundreds of pictures from today’s event over at: www.mcracingaction.com. The next round of the MDRA Series takes place in mid July at the Doublin Gap MX Park in Shippensburg, PA. The first race I ever entered was a Hare Scramble in Maryland nearly twenty years ago. Yeah, I know I’m showing my age…And even though I started racing late in my teens, I was still nervous about competing, since my bike, was used only for recreational enjoyment, up until this point. I prepared myself as much as possible, by reading all the rules about racing Hare Scrambles, attending riders meeting and carefully listening to every word spoken. So, I felt I had a pretty good understanding on how this Hare Scramble thing worked. For those of you not familiar, here’s a quick and dirty of how it went down at this event. There are three groups lined up in the starting field; the A riders are first, then B, followed by my group, C. That’s it, no further segregation, just A, B and C classes. Pretty much your standard alphabetical order, any preschooler could follow. Here’s where it gets interesting. The gate official proceeds to announce the following: “All the A and B riders, you will start the event by standing in front of your bike with your legs straddling the front wheel and your hands on the handlebars. When you hear the gun fire, start the bikes and start racing. All A riders go off on the first shot and B riders on the second shot.” I thought, OK, a little difficult, but it did not seem to be a problem as long as I could get the bike started quickly. It gets better. He continues “All you C riders listen up. We are doing it differently for you guys.” So, I’m thinking great, can’t be any worse then the first group, right? He continues “All of you have to take out your spark plug, hold it in your right hand and straddle the bike. When you hear the gun fire, put the plug in, and fire up the bike for your start.” He adds a bit of helpful advice, “If you don’t have your plug wrench with you, you better go get it now” After a brief moment of the C riders looking around at each other in disbelief, and waiting for someone to make the first move, he finally adds “Only kidding guys, you start the same as the A and B guys.” Now, I’m sure those in my class with more experience, recognized the joke, but as for me, for a few seconds, it was a heart stopping reality. At least it got my adrenaline pumping… I know some of you may be thinking that I made this up, but it is true story, I swear on my brand new KX450F, this did happen. The point here is that the ever so critical start, at any race, is nerve racking enough without having to worry about any added “conditions”. There is a lot to think about in getting a good start and a lot that can go wrong as well. In attempting to sort it out, this brings up many questions, for instance, in a Motocross start, is it better to watch the gate for movement or the pin supporting the gate? What is the right gear to start in? Do those Holeshot devices really work? How about filling in the ruts or removing rocks in your path off the gate. Does that make that much of a difference? Do you prefer inside, middle or outside line off the gate?

But also consider the mental side of it. What’s going on inside your head? What do you think about at the gate before the card goes sideways? How do you handle the first turn? Does being too aggressive have the potential to put you down, so you become traction for the guy behind you? And not being aggressive enough leave you choking on mud clumps?

This is where I turn things over to you again. Can you answer any of these questions? I used Motocross as the main focus for starting, primarily because in a race with fewer laps, the start is that much more critical. However, techniques for starts in Hare Scrambles and Enduros can just as easily provide some good opportunities for feedback. Let me know your responses to these questions, bring up new questions, share a story of your own, or simply add a comment. Here’s what you can do to get in touch with me: 1. Send an email to dirt-talk@hotmail.com 2. Put the title of the article in the subject line. 3. Indicate if you want your name (class and riding number if desired) credited or if you prefer to remain anonymous. – Your comments, topic suggestions, or own stories may be included in future articles. Until next time, ride safe and have fun. Bryan Bitzer #41 Sponsored by: O’Neal Racing - www.oneal.com East Coast Powersports - www.eastcoastksp.com
