Dear Friends and Fellow Cattlemen,

We would like to welcome you to our 11th annual production sale. As we reflect on how our sale has evolved over the years, we are truly fortunate to have been able to get to know so many good people, and we are honored by the trust you have put in our program as a source of genetics for your herds.

Every year in the cattle business presents its own unique challenges. Input costs, weather, and cattle prices will change, and we accept that some years will be better than others for each of these. In a business defined by unpredictability, those factors that do carry a degree of predictability have much greater value to us.

Genetics are by their nature an imperfect science. Environment has a significant impact on how animals perform, regardless of genetic potential. However, within a given environment, we see the clear value of superior genetics in animal performance, maternal ability, and sound structure. For ourselves, we find the most value in choosing genetics that bring a degree of predictability in these areas. That may mean that we don’t use the new “hot” sire with crazy numbers on paper, and we may not have the first sons of the latest record-selling bull that made headlines. But it does mean that more often than not, we end up with cattle that perform, look, and last the way we want. And it also means that the bulls and females that result from balanced matings and strong cow families will go on to perform as expected in our customers’ herds.

For years, the focus of Brookdale Angus has been maternal excellence. We believe that a strong maternal foundation can have a major impact on the profitability of a cow herd, and this has driven our focus on sound structure, sensible mature size, fertility, good disposition, and performance. We feel the bulls and females in this catalog represent some of our best cow families and will breed true to this genetic philosophy.

This year our sale will feature a nice group of yearling bulls and heifers, along with a number of embryo packages with exciting potential to enhance your breeding program. The bulls have been developed on a sensible ration with space to roam and exercise, and we have done everything possible to get you the most up-to-date and accurate information to assist you in your purchasing decisions. Bulls are performance tested, genomic tested, and will undergo a breeding soundness exam prior to sale date. We understand that the most important step in genetic improvement is the creation of pregnant cows, and all bulls sell with a full guarantee of fertility through their first breeding season.

Our sale will again be held the first Friday in March. Cattle will be grouped for display at the farm the morning of the 3rd, and the sale will be in the format of a video auction held at the Lester Community Center, which is a 2-mile drive south of the farm. You are welcome to stop in and view the cattle any time prior to the sale as well. We want you to feel comfortable with the animals you purchase, and we would love to go through them with you and provide you with any additional information you need.

TRAILER PARKING

• Parking space for those with trailers may be limited at the farm the day of the sale. Additional parking will be available at the Lester Community Center, and shuttle transportation will be provided.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

• A supplement sheet will be available sale day with complete and up to date information. Announcements from the sale block take precedence over sale book information.

BULL DELIVERY

• We will assist in arranging trucking believed to be reliable if you are unable to haul your purchases. Free delivery to a central delivery point as agreed on upon by buyer and seller will be provided within 400 miles on bulls selling for over $4000.

• Buyers that take their bulls home on sale day will receive a $100/ head discount. Delivery will be arranged on all other bulls by no later than the second week of April. Bulls may be kept after 4/15/22 at a cost of $3.00/head/day.

VOLUME DISCOUNT

• Buyers of 3 or more bulls will be eligible for a volume discount. This discount will be applied as follows: 3 bulls will receive a 3% discount, 4 bulls will receive a 4% discount, up to a maximum discount of 10% on 10 or more bulls.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• Cattle will sell under the Suggested Sale Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association (www.angus.org/pub/suggested_sale_ terms.pdf). Seller will retain 1/3 semen interest on all bulls unless otherwise noted.

BULL GUARANTEE

• All bulls sell with a first breeding season fertility guarantee. Any issues that may arise should immediately be brought to the attention of Brookdale Angus.

LIVESTOCK MORTALITY INSURANCE

• Insurance will be available sale day through Martin-Trudeau Insurance, Katie Williams (605) 770-9986. It is recommended that buyers insure their purchases for safe delivery. Purchaser assumes the risk of death or injury to their livestock immediately after the sale.

FOOD AND REFRESHMENTS

• A complimentary beef lunch will be available sale day.

Brookdale Brutus 390

Brutus is one of the most exciting bulls produced to date by the Brookdale program. Royally bred with some of the great females of the breed close-up in his pedigree, he hails from our Jodie cow family which exemplifies maternal excellence. Brutus was the $37,000 high-selling bull on our 2021 sale and was purchased by Peak Dot Ranch and Semex. His first offspring were born at Brookdale this past year, and it has become very apparent that the performance and phenotype we expected from Brutus is breeding true. His progeny are deep-bodied, moderate-framed, and put pounds on the scale. We are proud to offer the first Brutus sons on this year’s sale, and we look forward to seeing his influence for years to come.
