As we near the closing months of spring bull sales, important decisions need to be made. Heifer bulls have been in big demand early and with some areas getting a shot of good moisture, the grass is and will be coming. Some ranches will have to begin thinking about how to stretch their pastures with extra feed supplements. We have been down this road before, and the extra planning now will be a big factor in survival of the fittest. On a positive note, just a couple of inches of timely rain will get the grass growing and will change attitudes in the cattle industry. I really think things will be good this fall. Having the best set of bred cows with great working body scores will be paramount, whether you keep them all or move some of them. The sales have remained strong in both price and demand within our travels throughout the region. There are a number of bull sales left in the region and with the -15 to -30 degree, ten day cold snap we had, I highly suggest an early test on your herd bulls this year. Scrambling at the last minute for turn out bulls is not the best for your calf crop numbers and quality down the road. We do have the best quality feeder cattle in the country and the type, kind, and genetics you purchase during the remainder of this bull sale season needs to be the best that money can buy.
