Eagle Pass Donor Sale

The Eagle Pass Online Donor Sale is scheduled for 12/14/22 on SaleRing.live. Online bidding is available on sale day the 14th with a live close at 7:00 pm CT.

Dear Fellow Breeders and Progressive Cattlemen:

This is a special sale for us. We’ve used an extensive ET program over the last decade to expand our Simmental and SimAngus cow base and these donors have been the foundation of that effort. As we near the conclusion of our transition to a Simmental focused program, we made the decision to offer our donor battery in its entirety.

These cows represent what we feel are some of the elite females in our herd, but also with in their respective breeds. They were all flushed successfully this last spring, and because the majority of embryos we produce are the result of the IVF process, we keep most of our young donors in production.

Not only have these donors produced some of the headline bulls and females to come out of our program recently, many of these donors will also have sons that highlight our 2023 pro duction sale in what will be our strongest offering to date.

I’ve got full confidence that this group of donors have only just begun to write their story. The quality and breeding value of these females is outstanding and I invite you to reach out with any questions you may have. This will be a completely digital sale, meaning there will not be any catalogs printed and mailed. Videos of the donors will be available online, and the donors are able to be viewed at the ranch headquarters anytime prior to the sale. Have a Merry Christmas as we look forward to another great year in the cattle industry!

Wow, what an opportunity! Eagle Pass Ranch has decided to push their calving season to late spring to better fit the ranch resources. With this decision, they have also decided to reduce the embryo program. So, this creates the opportunity for the buying public to have access to the very best genetics from this nationally renown herd that normally would not be available. So, I will say it again, what an opportunity! This group of donors is anchored by the great TJ 22X. 22X is still going strong and looks phenomenal. When you look through the offering you will also find some great up-and-coming donors that excel in various economically relevant traits, especially for feed efficiency. Eagle Pass Ranch has been a leader in measuring and applying feed efficiency data, and these donors represent some of the top genetics in the nation in regard to high-efficiency cattle. Also in the offering are two full sister to the great herd sire EGL Firesteel 103F, as well as many other genetic gems.

This sale is ONLINE ONLY with a LIVE CLOSE. We will open the bidding up the morning of December 14, 2022, hosted on SaleRing.live. Online bidding will end at 7:00 pm (ct) on December 14. At 7:00, the LIVE CLOSE will begin with the first cow posted in the sale order. Dave Mullins, the owner and founder of SaleRing.live, will serve as the auctioneer. The bidding at this point will be just like you are bidding at any other production sale online. The auctioneer will start the bidding during the live close with the highest bid received during the online bidding portion of the sale that occurred during the day. If someone bids higher, the auctioneer will proceed to auctioning off the female until the bidding ceases and he says sold. If no one else bids, then the person in the lead at the close of the online bidding will be the winner. We will proceed down the sale order until all of the females are sold. This eliminates the lengthy “race-horse style” close with extended bidding. This style of close will be fast and efficient so you can continue on with your evening, instead of sitting by your phone or computer waiting to see if you got out bid or not.

Corey and Jared have viewed this elite set of females. If you have any questions, please give us a call. Opportunities like this do not come along very often so please take a look. Don’t miss out on a chance to own one of these great donors sure to move your program forward.

TJ 22X is the flagship donor at Eagle Pass and the dam of numerous herd sires and donors. She currently has five sons standing at stud for ABS, Alta, and Semex along with many sons working in breeding programs across the country. We purchased her from the Triangle J program in 2016, and first flushed her to G A R Sure Fire, producing 9 sons and 5 daughters. We sold the 9 sons in our 2019 Spring Sale to average $19,950, highlighted by EGL Firesteel 103F, purchased by the Firesteel group for $85,000. We continued to explore various matings to make both Si mAngus and higher-percentage cattle and still haven’t found a sire that doesn’t work on this cow. To date, we’ve marketed 45 sons over the last four years averaging right at $10,000 per bull.

Her pedigree offers unlimited mating flexibility. Not only is she an outcross to popular lines like Beacon/Shear Force, Cowboy Cut, and C4 but we have not found another female that can generate next-level F1s with such consistent quality as 22X. Her long profile, maternal design, and extra muscle shape compliment many of the top Angus sires in the business today.

While her sons have stolen the show the past few years, 22X has quietly been leaving a legacy in the quality of females she produces. Literally every daughter makes the replacement pen and goes on to be productive cows or donors. Her daughters are the right size with excellent fleshing ability, good temperament, and phenomenal feet and udder quality. For her age, she’s as sound as you can make one. She needs no special attention and stays in incredible shape raising a calf or in the donor pen.

There have been only a few females on the ranch that can match this cow’s quality or pro duction record. She’s been the cornerstone of our breeding program the last few years and her influence will be seen in most of our pedigrees for years to come, and I can say with certainty that will be the case for her new owners as well.

EGL Nala 105F was one of the standout daughters of the Sure Fire x 22X flush and it was an easy decision to flush her as a yearling heifer. Much to our surprise, she knocked it out of the park, and we ended up splitting the dish. Her first crop of ET calves produced the 2021 NILE Supreme Champion Female, EGL Nala 218H, who joined both her dam and grand dam in the donor pen this last spring and sells as Lot 3. Just like her great donor dam, EGL Nala 105F is loaded with maternal quality from every angle. She’s an easy fleshing, slick haired broody cow that’s in great shape no matter what time of the year you see her. She boasts a nursing ratio of 2 @ 107, and her natural calf this year by OMF Epic E27 is a standout in the replacement pen.

Talk about a true power cow! What a testament of the impact an in tensive and purposeful ET program can have on a breeding program. We first flushed the 22X cow in 2017, and in less than 5 years we’ve got EGL Nala 218H, a 22X granddaughter, in the donor pen and the fourth generation will hit the ground in less than a month! As part of the LeDoux show string as a bred heifer in 2021, she was exhibited at the NILE and selected as the Grand Champion Simmental Female and went on to be crowned the Supreme Champion Female later that week. She is moderately framed, truly huge volumed, and thick made. She is structurally correct, free moving, and has a well attached and suspend ed udder with small, well-placed teats. EGL Nala 218H has outcross genetics to most of the current Simmental and SimAngus cow herd and brings to the industry style, volume, and real power. Her production re cord is getting off to strong start as well with a nursing ratio of 1 @ 113.

The maternal quality of the daughters out of the Sure Fire x 22X flush are some of the best we’ve seen and EGL Nala 114F might be the best one yet. We liked the cattle so much we went back and did something we rarely do, and flushed 22X again to Sure Fire to add more of these high-quality females to the herd. Like her sisters, we flushed her as a yearling heifer resulting in 4 sons by W/C Night Watch 84E. They went on to be sale highlights, averaging $8,800 in our 2021 Spring Sale. Currently she has 2 sons by ES Right Time FA110-4 in the bull pen that will certainly make a splash in our upcoming 2023 Spring Sale. Individually, EGL Nala 114F boasts a nursing ratio of 2 @ 112, both daughters that have been standouts in the replacement pen. She easily sets herself apart physically in the donor pen with her brood cow presence, extra capacity, and soundness from end to end. Her outcross pedigree, combined with her type and kind, only enhances her value and income-generating potential in the donor pen.

EGL Miss 88G is the result of another dynamic TJ 22X flush, this one by the Midland champ T C A Visionary 158, a top 1% RFI bull with 116 progeny with reported feed intake data. Two full brothers, EGL Great Western 86G (Semex) and EGL Great Western 87G (ABS) are currently standing at stud. She currently has 4 progeny with feed intake reported, ranking her in the top 16% for RFI according to Vytelle. We’ve used EGL Great Western 87G extensively in our own herd and in our commercial bred heifer program with great success. The cattle are easy-calving with good vigor at birth, excellent growth and effi ciency. EGL Miss 88G is the right size cow, clean made through her front third, extra capacity and a perfect udder with small teats. She’s the definition of an efficient cow – low intake, moderate framed, easy fleshing, breeds up early and raises a big calf.

After flushing TJ 22X to G A R Sure Fire with a lot of success, we decided to try another Gardiner bull that offered a little bit of a different pedigree. The result was similar to the Sure Fire flush in a more moderate package and additional carcass merit. A full brother to EGL Ms 066H we called EGL Glacier 48G was a highlight in our 2020 Spring Sale, selling to Stan Sears – Little Shasta Ranch in California. We liked the bull a lot and used him right away in our AI program on heifers. Then we went searching for a full sister to add to the donor pen and found EGL Ms 066H, flushing her as a yearling heifer and again this last spring as a 2 yr old. While we won’t have any ET calves until next year, if her bull calf this year by TJ Flat Iron 259G is any indication, they ought to be pretty special. Here’s a young cow with endless possibilities that I think could be a breeding piece to make a next generation female which was our goal when we mated her this year to EGL Granite City 220G. She’s moderate made and built to last with ex cellent structure and good on her feet and legs. She’s the 1200 lb cow that everybody says they want, but can punch above her weight class when it comes to raising a big calf.

This donor is the result of embryos we purchased from Hook Farms to add some pedigree diversity to the herd and prove out some feed effi ciency lines. EGL Bella 01F is an own daughter of Hook’s Upper Limit 117U who has accomplished the rare feat of producing not one, but two Denver Champions! Hook’s Bella B72 was the 2016 NWSS Grand Champion Percentage Simmental Female and Hook’s/JRA Demi 605D went on to be the 2018 NWSS Grand Champion Percentage Simmental Female. On the sire side is Hook’s Admiral 33A, and after testing his ET sons is now the #1 feed efficiency sire (-1.08 RFI) in the Vytelle data base. EGL Bella 01F is a new donor as of this spring and doesn’t have any progeny tested yet but based on her pedigree, she has the poten tial to be feed efficiency royalty. She’s a super wide-based cow with extra capacity and volume, plus she always breeds up early and has an awesome disposition. It was an easy choice to add her to the donor pen this spring. We flushed her to Hook’s Galileo 210G, another feed efficiency stud, and 7 out of the 8 embryos resulted in pregnancies!

These next two young donors would be another result of embryos we purchased from Hook Farms, both out of the Hook’s Unique 12U donor, an own daughter of the famous Patti 3P cow that produced the herd sires Hook’s Xavier 14X and Hook’s Admiral 33A. Both of these young cows are just beginning to write their stories and carve out their legacy here at Eagle Pass. EGL Patti 41F has earned a nursing ratio of 3 @ 105, all of which are high-quality females that made their way into the replacement pen. Her balanced, no-holes EPD profile have made ET matings a breeze. Her sire, Hook’s Capitalist 37C, is currently the #6 sire for feed efficiency (-0.89 RFI) in the Vytelle database. We haven’t got any bull calves out of her yet that have been intake tested, but the foundation looks to be in place for excellent feed efficiency potential.

EGL Patti 124F is a maternal sister to Lot 8 by CCR Spartan 9124A, who goes back to the great CCR Apple donor who produced the herd bulls Wide Range, Gravity, and Santa Fe among others. The cow power in the donor’s pedigree is unrivaled, combining both the Apple and Patti donors. This cow made the short list for the donor pen after we saw her extra effort as a first calf heifer. Her bull calf that year by Hook’s Encore 65E started out at 60 lbs and ended up posting a yearling weight of 1413 lbs! He also had an IMF ratio of 169 putting him in elite territory for performance testing at Eagle Pass. EGL Patti 124F is an ideal cow with striking phenotype and as much maternal quality as you’ll find.

EGL Ms Bismarck 195H represents the next generation of donors here at Eagle Pass. We sorted this cow off as a replacement heifer as one we wanted to flush and then flushed her again this last spring. She’s a daughter of the long-time donor and one of the best Angus cows we’ve raised, Eagle Pass Ms Bismarck 2080. On the sire side is WS Proclamation E202 who needs no introduction to the Simmental breed. I might be a bit biased, but this is one of the best Proclamation females I’ve seen yet. On top of that, her genetic profile is enviable, scoring high in both indexes and is in the top 25% or better for 10 traits. With the cow power behind this cow, combined with her high-level of genetic po tential, the sky is the limit in what she can do for a breeding program.

Here is a female I really like. She combines a tremendous phenotype, performance, and a cool outcross pedigree. As a calf, she ratioed 80 for BW and 105 at weaning. We sorted her off as a replacement heifer to flush her and then again this spring. She’s got two sons in the bull pen currently that are extra special, one by ES Right Time FA110-4 and the other by LBRS Genesis G69. Her EPD profile is ideal for making bulls that commercial cattlemen need, and I think her maternal traits just get better as she gets further into her production career. She’s got the type, genetics, and a fresh pedigree and I think she’s one you can build a program around.

This long-time donor has done it all at Eagle Pass. She’s put a tremen dous number of high-quality females back in the cowherd and her bull calves sell as fast as we can make them. In our 2022 sale, we led off the offering with 9 full ET brothers by her out of TJ High Calibre 556B, averaging over $8500 per bull. Her calves, both bulls and heifers, con sistently rise to the top. She’s stood the test of time and cemented her place as one of the all-time great cows to come out of our program. Her dam, EGL Miss Frontier 4087, was one of the first cows we identified as being an outlier for feed efficiency, and was still in production at 14 years old in our donor program. Nearly all of our Angus cows and many of our SimAngus cows can be traced back to the 4087 cow. Eagle Pass Ms Protégé 2026 has carried on that legacy and is still one of all-time leading RFI females with an RFI EPD of -0.80, putting her in the top 1% with 32 direct progeny tested. We’ve proven this donor many times over again and I think her genetic potential is as relevant now for our industry as when she first entered the donor program as a 2 year old.

G A R Sure Fire 307 was our pick in the 2019 Gardiner Angus sale with the idea that she’d be the perfect complement for some of the breed- leading Simmental sires to make commercially focused F1s. Well the plan worked out and she’s surpassed our expectations, producing high-quality, performance-oriented bulls with tons of end product merit that you’d expect from the Gardiner program. Her two ET sons by LCDR Favor 149F were sale highlights last year, including EGL CCR Rawhide 137J who sold to Cow Camp Ranch for $12,500. Rawhide is now ranked in the top 10 for TI among Active Non-Parent SimAngus bulls. With the number of high-indexing Simmental sires available to day, this cow has got the potential to continue to produce F1 bulls that can take terminal traits to the next level.
