Jenson Ranch 2023 Catalog

The Jenson Ranch hopes this catalog reaches everyone in good health and good spirits. Thanks to the legendary production sale that the Dave Lensegrav family built from the ground up, we have been privileged to continue building on that legacy at our own ranch in Harding County, SD. God blessed our ranches with plentiful rains last spring which led to outstanding grazing throughout the summer. The bulls were weaned off heavy on October 1st, and we again sent them to Senger Farms in North Dakota to go on feed. We built a ration for them to gain slow and steady at 3 lbs./day to ensure foot quality and longevity. The bulls will be transported from Senger Farms to Faith, SD, a day or two prior to the sale for viewing. Post-sale, we will finish developing them at a slow rate, back at the Jenson Ranch. The bulls will then be semen tested and delivered to your ranch for turnout around the first part of May. We cull extremely hard, and we are striving to make our cowherd better every year with females that are easy fleshing, eye appealing, have solid feet and legs, and are easy to handle. We have been very please with the Powerball bull in the last few years and continue to use him for many reasons. As you can see in the stellar sire group, all of them are sired by Powerball daughters. We ventured in to breeding him to some of the balancer heifers and got some very nice offspring in doing that. By using Powerball, we can keep our mature size in check without sacrificing the body and mass. Very consistent on birthweight and the females are outstanding!! They were the gentlest set of heifers we have ever calved out.

It takes a while for breeding decisions to come around full circle but this was one that Dave strongly suggested after he saw our set of Powerball bull calves in the 2021 offering. He said, “you better be breeding that Powerball bull to some of these Gelbvieh cows because if the Gelbvieh cattle could use anything, it’s depth, and these suckers have a ton of it.” This dude has been a standout from early on and expresses a ton of muscle in a moderate framed, long spined package!! Throw a tick of that Gelbvieh in there and, by golly, I think we have a future herd sire that is going to cover all the bases extremely well!!! Best part about it, he was born out of a nice 2 year old heifer at a modest 80 pounds, unassisted. Calving ease, lotta growth and man does he have the look!!!!

Big bang is a purebred bull that we actually tried to purchase out of the Triangle J sale. We did not get him as he brought over 30k that day. We were able to make some arrangements and gathered up a sampling of semen and plugged them into some of those proven older genetics. The matings worked well in both the heifer pen and the bull pen. He folled his birth EPD as they were born in the high 70’s-low 80’s and his growth followed as well.

69B has been one of our favorite cows that we got when we bought into Dave’s herd. She is a striking model Gelbvieh cross cow that really just does everything right!! Great feet, great udder, perfect sized female that never misses. AIed back once again with her 8th calf. Her dam, 7Z, was the exact same way. Hard to go wrong with proven, predictable genetics!!

Fall Bulls- We continue to grow our fall program from the original cows from Dave’s herd. We are excited to grow this fall program, breeding our first set of heifers and slowly growing this herd solely based on quality. We are venturing into some embryo transplant work this coming fall so we can get some genetics from spring herd without actually moving cows to fall. We think these age advantage bulls are able to get out and breed more cows that first year and never really have to be pushed on feed. These bulls were weaned mid-March, turned out on grass in May, and starting the first of October we put them on a high roughage ration, projecting 2.5# gain per day. All of these fall bulls are sired by the Len Scout bull. Like I said previously in the yearling’s section, these Scouts are just right for combination of power and maternal and the daughters are appearing to be some of the best we have ever raised.
