FREE DELIVERY AND VOLUME DISCOUNTS: We will keep your bull until “turn-out” time and then we will delivery them to you, free of charge. There is a $100 per head credit if you haul your own bulls the day of the sale. We also give a volume discount – 5% on 5 bulls, 10% on 10 bulls or more.

Welcome Cattle Producers, We would like to welcome everyone to our 43rd annual bull sale. It sure is a good time to be a rancher. Good prices at the sale barns sure make it easier to operate a ranch. It has been kind of an open winter here in southeastern Montana so the hay piles are still looking pretty good. We started weaning calves in the middle of October and they definitely weaned a little heavier than last year. We feed out all of our calves here at the ranch just north of Broadus. CHS is in charge of the ration for the calves. They were fed a high roughage ration again this year, as this seems to work quite well for us. We conduct a very vigorous vaccination program here on the ranch. Dr. Clint Pederson with the Broadus Veterinary Clinic is our vet on call. Our vaccination program is listed in the catalog for your convenience. Whatever Clint says needs done we do. This helps to keep the herd health all intact and easier to manage. Along with the vaccine programs our cattle are on a mineral that was formulated by CHS for our specific area. The cattle are run on native pasture in the summer with no supplements. Then in the winter they get hay when the snow covers up the grass. Our 2-year-old heifers might get a little cake in the winter but that is the only other supplement we feed. No creep to the calves and no lick tubs to the cows. We like our cattle to be self-sufficient. The bulls have been semen tested, pelvic and scrotal measured by Dr. Pedersen. In our program we believe strongly in culling for disposition, mothering abilities, udder features and fertility. The bulls are 100% guaranteed for one full year no questions asked. If you are not satisfied for any reason you will get all your money back at next year’s sale. We strive to keep our customers happy in any way we can. MANGEN ANGUS RANCH HERD HEALTH PROGRAM: COWS AND PRE-BREEDING HEIFERS: Four weeks pre-breeding they receive each of the following: → Express FP3VL5 – a modified-live vaccine providing fetal protection against type 1 and type 2 BVD, IBR, Vibrio, and 5 strains of Leptospirosis → Multimin – an injectable trace mineral supplement containing zinc, manganese, selenium, and copper → Ivermectin pour-on dewormer CALVES AT BRANDING: → Pyramid 5 + Presponse – a modified-live vaccine providing protection against type 1 and type 2 BVD, IBR, PI3, BRSV, as well as Mannheimia Haemolytica → Bar-Vac 7-way clostridial vaccine + Haemophilus Somnus bacterin → Multimin injectable trace mineral supplement → Ivermectin pour-on dewormer CALVES AT PRE-WEANING → All steps performed at branding are repeated BULLS AT SEMEN TEST: → Express FP3VL5 – (see description above) → Fusogard footrot vaccine → SolidBac pinkeye vaccine – a two-pellet implant which functions as both a primary and booster innoculation → Wart vaccine → Ivermectin pour-on dewormer → Semen test – bulls are physically examined, reproductive tract palpated, scrotal and pelvic measurements obtained, and semen evaluated for quality and motility.

PERFORMANCE INFORMATION BIRTH WT. EPD: Birth weight EPD is expressed in pounds and is an indicator of an individual’s contribution to its progeny’s weight at birth and is a comparison to breed average. Birth weight seems to affect calving ease of first calf heifers. BIRTH WEIGHT: Birth weight is moderate in heritability and excessive birth weight may increase calving difficulty. Birth weight seems to have a positive relationship to yearling growth and each breeder must determine how much birth weight is acceptable. It seems birth weight will vary from year to year depending on winter weather and feeding rations. Length of gestation can also affect birth weight. The unborn calf is gaining about one pound per day during the last days of gestation. WEANING WEIGHT EPD: Weaning weight EPD is expressed in pounds and is an estimate of the amount of increase or decrease in weaning weight you would expect from the progeny of a bull compared to an average bull of the breed for weaning weight. It is related to the genetic growth that a bull will pass along to his offspring. WEANING WEIGHTS: Actual weaning weight is taken at the time of weaning. Adjusted 205 day weight is a calf’s weaning weight adjusted to a standard 205 days of age. Adjusting weaning weights allow for comparison of one bull against another for weaning growth. These comparisons are only against other animals in a contemporary group in the same herd where all animals are handled the same. Since adjusted weaning weights are moderately heritable, choosing bulls with high ADJ WW can increase that trait in your herd. YEARLING WEIGHT EPD: The yearling EPD is expressed in pounds and is an estimate of the amount of increase or decrease in yearling weight you can expect from the offspring of a bull compared to an average bull of the breed for yearling weight. ADJUSTED 365 DAY WEIGHT: Yearling weights are adjusted to 365 day weights to make an accurate comparison of bulls. This comparison is also made against animals of a contemporary group. Since 365 day weight is considered highly heritable, choosing for the 365 day weight will increase growth. There is a direct correlation between birth weights and increased yearling weights. Accepting a little more birth weight may be necessary in increasing yearling weight. MILK EPD: Milk EPDs are a prediction of milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Milk EPDs are not related to teat size or udder shape of those females. PELVIC AREA: Pelvic area is one of the factors which determines calving ease. Pelvic area is attained by multiplying the width times the depth of the pelvic opening. Pelvic area is highly heritable and measuring the pelvic area in bulls should be a good indicator of pelvic size that can be expected in a bull’s daughters. SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE: Scrotal circumference is directly related to mobility and concentration of semen. Bulls with larger testicle size are more likely to have higher pregnancy rates. Scrotal circumference is also closely related to age at puberty in both bulls and females. Maintaining early sexual maturity in larger, fast growing cattle is among the most important performance traits and is essential to profitability.
