Transportation

Rapid City is served by four commercial airlines. Mt. Rushmore Angus will be happy to furnish transportation from the airport if contacted in advance. If traveling by car, please refer to the map on the back cover.

First Year Breeding Season 100% Guarantee

All bulls selling for $3,500 or more will be covered 100% (less salvage value) by Mt. Rushmore Angus, if they are injured during their first breeding season and not able to return to service during that first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90 day period following the first turn out of the bulls. 100% of the value of the injured bull, minus salvage value, will be given as credit in a future sale or toward a replacement bull if one is available. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims must be made by September 1. This is not a mortality insurance, nor does it cover mismanagement or neglect. It does not cover injuries sustained prior to breeding season if your bull is turned out with other bulls.

Semen Testing

Bulls will have a breeding soundness evaluation (including semen test) done by Dr. Rhett Scoggin prior to delivery. All cattle to sell are guaranteed breeders by Mt. Rushmore Angus Ranch.

Terms & Conditions

All cattle will sell according to the terms recommended by American Angus Association.

Delivery & Wintering

Free delivery to adjoining states. We will begin delivering bulls after March 20, so please have your facility ready to receive the bulls. We will winter bulls free of charge until deliver.

Genetic Testing

All bulls are genomically enhanced using AngusGS test. They are all free of defects recognized through the American Angus Association either through pedigree or testing.

Supplemental Information

Scrotal and up-to-date weights will be available sale day. Any information announced sale day takes precedence over any printed material.

Insurance

Available if you wish to insure your purchase.

Retained Interest

We will retain 1/3 semen interest in all bulls selling.

On February 23rd, we invite you to attend our annual production sale, here at the ranch. Please review the information provided and take the time to come inspect early and ask questions at your leisure. Pictures were taken in mid-January and videos were recorded in early February. The videos will be posted, sometime within the two weeks before the sale. 2021 was similar to 2020. It was dry, but we are grateful for timely rains, which God provided to get us through. We take great pride in the fact that our calves are grown on native pasture without supplementation of creep feed, like many of your operations. The timely rains were reflected in the 205-day weights. Due to an early weaning, at the start of September, and a mild fall, we feel the bulls have developed well. These bulls have been bred with as much precision as possible. We always start with a base genetic focus of structural soundness, optimum birth weights, and bold weaning weights. Enhancements are made with strong maternal strength and cutting-edge carcass characteristics. These bulls are packed with as much genetic performance, maternal strength, and carcass quality as any offering we have had. We know you will see that as you review the catalog. Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

MT. RUSHMORE ANGUS RANCH PRODUCTION SALE

Combined Value ($C), an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase, and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid. Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $W increases weaning and maternal milk traits while increasing mature cow size. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
