Day 1 – Stop 1

TO U R S TO P

We would like to welcome the 2015 South Dakota Angus tour to our ranch. We are proud to be the first stop and to kick off the tour where you are sure to see many really great Angus cattle. My grandfather, Gib Miller, bought the headquarters of this ranch in 1947 where he ran Hereford cows. My father, Gene, a wheat farmer, added to the original place and we have added pieces to the ranch over the years. We bought our first Angus cows in 1972. They were bred heifers that came from Johnson Brothers of Trail City, SD. We gave $320.00 per head for them, which was a ridiculously high price at that time. A few years later we started adding registered Angus cows, mostly coming from Joe Schaff and Hoff’s Scotch Cap Angus. We presently run about 200 registered Angus females and will be hosting our 34th Annual Production Sale in April at Presho Livestock Auction. We have never been about getting bigger, but have always been trying to get better. We blend AI sires with our herd bulls to produce bulls that make money for our good customers. That’s our main goal. Presently we have two new herd sires that we bought last spring: #1: BT Heavy Duty, an Active Duty son out of a sweet made Connealy Impression daughter. We had to outbid several states and one foreign country to get this guy but we did it. We have a ton of confidence in him. #2: James Final Answer, a son of Final Answer out of a great Lead On donor cow of Jerry Connealy’s. He is a maternal brother of Connealy Counselor an ABS bull and herd sire of Hoover Angus in Iowa. We hope everyone enjoys the tour and that we have great weather. Thanks for coming and being a part of this tour.

Day 1 – Stop 2

TO U R The Mowry family-Steve, Deb, Sage, and Shilo-welcome you to ‘Ma & Pa Angus’! Our outfit is along the White River twenty miles southwest of Presho, SD. The first Angus cows on the ranch were owned by Eivald Ellefsen in 1918. Articles in The Aberdeen-Angus Journal dated 1928 report how his cows ran “unpampered” in the tough South Dakota winters. Another article in a 1947 issue tells how the cattle survived the drought of the 1930s. Not much has changed in a hundred years! Steve’s parents, George and Shirley, purchased the ranch in 1961 and ran a commercial cow herd while raising their three boys. Youngest son, Steve, had a good year on the Wrangler Jeans Bullfighting Tour in 1983 and purchased his first 46 bred heifers that fall. He continued to grow his “nest egg” while performing as a rodeo clown throughout the 80s. In 1990, he quit professional rodeo to ranch full time with his dad. Steve met his match and married Deb Bruner in 1997. A better partner he could never have asked for! Her dad, Bob, unknowingly gave them the name “Ma & Pa Angus”. Today the Mowrys sell approximately 60 yearling Angus bulls the last Monday in April at Presho Livestock Auction. Females are sold private treaty. Like Mr. Ellefsen, the Mowrys run their registered Angus cows unpampered. They are tested in a commercial cattle environment. There is no time for troublemakers and culling is year around. The cows are pregnant in the fall or they go to town, just one calving season. Cows calve in a river hills pasture and are expected to protect and nurture that calf to a lucrative weaning weight. No creep feeders allowed. Fertility, udders, soundness, and fleshing-ease all rank ahead of performance. You may not find the largest black calves in South Dakota here, but you will find the kind that can survive the next one hundred years.

Day 1 – Stop 3

TO U R

Four generations of the Fuoss family have been raising black Angus. My grandfather, Henry Fuoss, started cross breeding his Hereford cows with Angus bulls in 1949. He died before he got to see the first calves born, but my dad, Orville, continued to use Angus bulls and built up a commercial Angus herd. Dave and sons, Michael and Todd, now operate the ranch and the fifth generation is ready to become part of the operation. Michael and Lyranda live south of Draper with their three sons, Ty, Dylan and Ryan. Todd and son, Henry live in Pierre. Our daughter, Lori, ranches north of Midland with her husband, Tim Nemec and four children, Rachel, Emily, James and Liz. In 2007, we had the opportunity to purchase the top 100 cow/calf pairs from Leo Howard’s registered herd in Winner, SD. These cows have been a big building block in the expansion of both our numbers and the genetic advancement of our registered cow herd. The AI sires that influence our mature cow herd include Hoff Great Western SC, SAF 598 Bando 5175, TC Freedom, and Sitz Alliance 6595. More recent AI sires include SAV Final Answer, SAV Net Worth, Mogck Sure Shot, Sitz Upward, Mogck Bullseye and Connealy Impression. This spring, we AI’d 300 registered Angus cows and 100 registered Angus heifers to Connealy Earnan, SAV Resource 1441, and Tour of Duty. We also AI’D 300 commercial Angus and black white face heifers to Varilek Confidence to sell this fall. We started selling a few registered Angus bulls in Philip at the all breeds bull sale and for the next 10 years we held our annual sale at the Presho Livestock Auction. In 2011, we made the decision to host our own production sale at the ranch. We started from scratch and erected a Cleary building which serves as the sale barn and a dayto-day working facility. We also farm and started no-tilling in 1988. Our crops include winter wheat, corn, sunflowers, field peas, and grain sorghum. We raise all our own feed and graze the stubble fields once crops are harvested. We calve our heifers in February and the main cow herd in March and April. We also started a fall herd so we can offer 18-month-old bulls in our sale. Every spring we look forward to seeing new calves. Our annual bull sale at the ranch will be the first Thursday in March. We will be offering 100 head of registered Angus bulls with 60 head of black white face bred heifers to calve the first of April. On this stop, there will be a set of calves sired by Connealy Earnan, Ten X, Connealy Confidence 0100, LT In-Valuable, Varilek Confidence and Stetson 100X. We believe these are the best we’ve raised and welcome the tour to view the cattle on display.

Day 1 – Stop 4

TO U R

We would like to welcome everyone to the 2015 South Dakota Angus Tour and say “Thanks for coming!” Deep Creek Angus Ranch is located 65 miles northwest of Pierre, SD in the rolling plains of Haakon County. Its family history in ranching dates back to 1906 when T.J.’s great great grandfather, Arnt Markwed, homesteaded the ranch. For 109 years and six generations the Markwed family has lived and worked the ranch. In 1999, T.J. purchased a portion of the ranch from his grandparents, Billy and Arlyne Markwed, and started raising registered Angus cattle. Over the years the cow herd grew and in 2012 T.J. purchased the rest of the ranch. Today T.J., along with his wife Jeanine, and children Dylan, Kori and Kyler run the ranch. The ranch currently runs 210 registered cows, 40 commercial cows, and 60 registered bred heifers. Deep Creek Angus has never single trait bred cattle, but rather breeds for cattle that excel in many areas. Our cattle must be structurally sound, thick, with depth of body and added fleshing ability. We focus most of all on maternal traits but just as important they must be profitable for us and our customers. On display will be around 250 head of pairs, herd bulls and bred heifers. The 2015 calf crop is sired by Connealy Arsenal, Basin Excitement, Rathbun Accelerate, Bruin Uproar, and Deep Creek Cutbank. Deep Creek Angus hosts an annual bull sale the last Tuesday in February at Philip Livestock, Philip, SD. 2016 will mark our 17th annual bull sale. We sell approximately 50-60 registered yearling and two year old bulls. We also sell 200-250 of our customers replacement heifers. We are proud of our Angus cattle but prouder of the people that use them! We guarantee customer satisfaction!!! Visitors are welcome anytime, we would love to show you around the ranch.

TO U R Slovek Ranch is located 23 miles northwest of Philip, SD. John Slovek originally purchased 320 acres in 1913. John’s son, Earl Slovek grew the ranch to 4,280 acres. Earl had one son, Bill. Bill has since grown the ranch to 13,800 acres of deeded land. Bill and Pennie Slovek have three kids Belinda, Brock and Bo. Bo bought his first registered Angus female in 2001 from Leachman Cattle Company in Billings, Montana. In 2007 after college, Bo moved back to the ranch full-time. In 2008, Bo added cattle from Hould Angus and Assman Land and Cattle dispersals. Assman Land and Cattle has a big influence in his herd. The ALC prefix will appear in a majority of the pedigrees. Since then he has added females from Wehrmann Angus, Werner Angus, Leachman Cattle Company, Vintage Angus Ranch, Suzi Q Angus, Sydenstricker Angus, Summitcrest Angus, and the latest is his half interest purchase in Brazila of Conanga 839A, the dam of the $235,000 Connealy Earnan from Raven Angus. In 2013, Bo partnered on PA Fortitude with Malek Angus, Split Diamond Angus, and Genex. Fortitude is the top selling bull in Peterson Angus history. Sitz Dynasty was also added that spring. He is a full brother to Sitz Top Game. Malek Angus and Bo partnered on Dynasty together. In the fall of 2013, Bo added Sydgen Fate 2800. Fate is also the top selling bull in Sydenstricker Angus history and is partnered on with Malek Angus, Gary Wall, Pitts Angus, and Sioux Pass Angus. Bo believes that you can have everything in Angus cattle. He strives to keep his cattle functional and excel in feed efficiency, carcass traits, and maternal traits. Slovek Ranch flushes top cows to produce as many top genetic animals as possible. This allows customers a chance to buy full brothers to keep calves more consistent. Bo is currently working with Top Dollar Angus to ensure his customers earn premiums on offspring of his genetics. He will be selling 180 commercial bred heifers this December that are enrolled in the Top Dollar Angus program. The Sloveks will have their annual bull and commercial bred heifer sale on December 15 in Philip.

Day 2 – Stop 1

TO U R

The Munger family has been farming and ranching in South Dakota since our original homestead in 1882 in southern Brown County. Steve and Debi Munger raised sons AJ and Nate on that original homestead and Steve and Debi continue to reside there today. Our operation as Eagle Pass Ranch began in 1987 when we, along with a partner purchased the ranch formerly known as Jennings Hyland Angus which sprawled over Hand, Hyde and Buffalo counties in central South Dakota. Jennings Hyland Angus began as brothers Clayton and Ted Jennings came to the state from Iowa where they had worked as hog merchants. They had cash in their pockets during the 1930s when cash was scarce among the original homesteaders in central South Dakota. This allowed them to accumulate a vast land holding, which they stocked with Angus cattle. Their success breeding Angus was well known in the 1950s and early 1960s. They exhibited numerous Champion Angus bulls at the Chicago International. During the 1960’s they teamed up with the Les and Lee Leachman families who had come west from Ankony, NY with their own Angus herd. The Jennings and Leachmans combined to form Ankony Hyland and continued their dominance at major Angus shows. Later in the 1960s, the ranch was sold to a California investment group which the Jennings operated for the new owners and the Leachman family moved on to Montana. In the 1970s, the Jennings repurchased the ranch from the California group and resumed their cattle operation; however, the Ankony Hyland cowherd also moved on in a separate sale to a Nebraska ranch and became known as Ankony Shadow Isle. After the split of the ranch and the foundation cow herd, the Jennings brothers were best known for their feeder cattle operation. They purchased thousands of calves from area ranchers and either backgrounded them or ran them on summer pastures. When Eagle Pass Ranch purchased the property in 1987, we were fortunate enough to retain most of the employees from the Jennings operation. This accumulated experience has proven to be very valuable over the years. There have been some changes to the ranch over time. Some of the outlying property has been sold to fund buy-outs of original owners, some of the rangeland has been converted to cropland. Many of the original buildings have been razed and replaced with new, modern structures. The constant over time is that the ranch continues to be home to a progressive cattle operation managed by a family with a vision of the future. The Munger family ranching business is now a sixth generation operation with a seventh generation preparing to take over someday. Steve and Debi Munger remain active with the ranch. AJ, with his wife, Emily, and son, Briggs, serves the ranch as marketing and records manager. Nate, with his wife, Hillary, and sons, Rhett and Graham, serves the ranch as operations manager. Eagle Pass Ranch holds two bull sales every year. The spring sale is held the third Wednesday in March at the ranch near Highmore, S.D. and the fall sale is held the fourth Wednesday in September in Dos Palos, Calif. at the Dos Palos Y Auction Yard. A biannual female sale is also held in the fall at the ranch. For more information about Eagle Pass Ranch, visit our website eaglepassranch.com.

Thomas Ranch is a fourth generation farming and ranching operation. The home place is located in eastern Sully County. Harry, Kay, Troy, VeaBea & Cally Thomas comprise and run the day to day business at the ranch. We will calve 450 purebred Angus cows in the spring and 50 purebred Angus cows in the fall. Angus sires include: Basin Payweight, Connealy Comrade 1385, Connealy Final Product, Connealy Shrek 4242, Deer Valley All In, GAR Prophet, Mytty In Focus, RB Tour Of Duty 177, Styles Cashed In S8, Barstow Cash, TR Validate A3005, TR Mr Aberdeen 1068Y, Flag Impresion 10062, and BCC JAF Upward 15X. A few years ago we delved back into the Simmental breed and currently have about 100 Simmental or Sim-Angus cows. We will calve 50 Purebred Red Angus cows. We are home to 200 purebred Charolais mother cows, which we will be dispersing November 30, 2015 here at the Thomas Ranch Sales Facility. Each year, we host our Spring Bull Sale at the Thomas Ranch Sales Facility, the second Tuesday in April, Selling Angus, Charolais, Red Angus, and Sim-Angus. There are approximately 300 bulls marketed through our annual bull sale. We also sell about 200 bulls private treaty. These are younger bulls or bulls that don’t make the bull sale. We do have cooperators in each breed that use Thomas Ranch genetics and provide some of the bulls in the offering. We also host a Fall Bull Sale where the fall bulls are merchandised. We do this in conjunction with Jerry Mettler from Canton, SD. Jerry is one of our bull cooperators. The third Wednesday in September finds us hosting the Annual Thomas Ranch Private Treaty Steer and Heifer Sale. Groups of cows and heifers are available private treaty at the ranch. Thomas Ranch is located 17 miles east of Onida or 13 miles north of Harrold. We are fifty miles from the state capitol, Pierre. Visitors are always welcome and we’d love the opportunity to show you around. Please be sure to call so we can be sure that someone is at the ranch to show you around. Thanks for your interest in our program. We would like to thank Lawrence Weidenbach and Brian Kroeplin for preparing our burgers during the Angus tour as well as every year at our bull sale.

Trans Ova Genetics began business in 1980 under the vision of Dr. David Faber, as a premier “on-farm” embryo transfer (ET) service organization which was an extension of a large-animal veterinary practice. Thirty years later, the original embryo transfer team members: Dr. Faber, Dr. Daryl Funk and Diane Broek, are all still actively involved in the business. Built on the reputation, commitment and expertise of its founders, Trans Ova Genetics continues to focus on core competencies of outstanding animal husbandry, technological advancements and a commitment to improved agricultural applications of these principles. Maintaining its commitment as a leader of applied reproductive technologies, Trans Ova Genetics continues to grow with the addition of housing and day center facilities across the United States. These satellite centers offer state-of-the-art, low-stress donor housing facilities with close proximity to dairy, beef, and bucking stock breeders nationwide. Trans Ova Genetics partnered with Steve Yackley and Yackley Ranches in the spring of 2008 to open the Yackley Ranch Trans Ova Satellite Center near Onida, S.D. A second generation purebred Limousin breeder, with a background as a manager of the South Dakota division of Express Ranches production herd and in marketing for Express Ranches, Yackley’s facilities, experience and longtime relationship with Trans Ova, made this partnership a perfect fit. Steve Yackley and crew care for and manage clients’ purebred cows as the cows undergo treatments facilitated by Trans Ova Genetics to multiply their herds’ elite genetics.
