PHOTOGRAPHS NUMBER 1
PHOTOS USED
This photo was taken in Kuala Lumpa. I have cropped and increased tghe scontrast to maximise thhe details. I used thhe trees in the foreground to really show the height of the towers and to add colour to the photoo.
I love the feeling thiis picture gives. Six related chilldren having fun on the beach. The picture has been croppped ,the saturation increased and colours enhanced. All these helped reduce some of the blur but if ii took it again i will increase the shutter speed.
This picture was taken at Chichester Univerity. Using the reflection of my groupin tn a door way including me taking the picture gives the photo another dimension. It makes the viewer feel they are watching the group and not a phot. To get to this point I cropped the photo, changed the light and the contrast and adjusted the saturation.
This photo was taken in Belgium on a farm. The ordinary photo of two ducks was made more impressive by cropping the ducks close ensuring they wer not central. I then sketched around the feet and gead inverted the effect to make the rest of the photo balck and white. I then moved back to the head and feet increasing the vibrance and saturation of both to really bring the clours out.
This photo was taken on Eastbourne seafront. I stood over the groin to take it ensuring the doownward angle gae the photo depth. I then slightly cropped it keeping it landscape increased the brightness and contrast. I feel this is a very peaceful photo that makes you fele calm.
In tihis photo I was experiementing with reflection. working with a group in a sports science lab I toook the photo in an uneven mirror. The effect gives a normal uninteresting photo a different layer. It makes you feel you are loooking back at the group and not at a photo. To get this effect if was a simple case of croppping the group out of the photo and just usng their reflection.
CHUCK CLOSE
These phots are simple but very effective. I really like the way he puts faces back together but leaves lines where he has cut them. Thie really help draw your eye through the photoo. It keeps with the Apart of together theme as he make it look like different sections have been bought back together.
MICHAEL WOLF
Michaels photos really draws you in but at the same time makes you feel you are standing away form the main focus (keeps you apart). The wet glass blurs the picture which makes you want to see through. By playiing with ligh at the same time he makes you feel the person is not happy, thatthey are loooking out for something better.
TETSUO AOKI These pictures are relly interesting as they are completely out of dimension. By keeping the people so close he keeps with the theme of togetherness. To recreate this in a photo will be difficult due to the angles Tetsuo works with. I do like these pictures though as they are fun and gives you a good feeling.

Orange dots show which phtos have been used.
RESPONSE TO CHUCK CLOSE I have taken a photo of two members of my family. For each one i cropped the photos so just the faces were left and ensured the light was complimentary. I then cut each face and put it back together giving every other box a drop glow to show the lines. I reallylike these pictures as they are both smilling to make you feel happy and the lines take you through the photo.
RESPONSE TO MICHAEL WOLF
These photo really play on your seneses. The cloured hand through a bluurred blac and white glass window makes you feel uneasy. makes you feel someone is in trouble. The picture of my wife through a windown makes the viewer feel sorry for her as the black and white clour makes it feel cold. This is a layered photo. I put both photos in to black and white then placed the window over the photo of my wife and reduced its capactity until it had the desired effect. It does make you feel you are apart from each one.
RESPONSE TO TETSUO AOKI
This photo makes you feel warm it gives a feeling of togetherness. By pputting every photo so close to the next it highlights how close we are as a family/. By stretching each person and including vibrant colours I have also added a fun element. This is the sort of photo that a vewer would smile at should they see it on a wall.

ALBAN GROSDIDIER
I really like Albans work as working with water really alllows you to play with light. If the subject moves you get beautiful ripples, as above, if they are still you get a slightly mislined photo that works. You can also play with the theme of apart or tgether. Coming out of the water makes you feel you aare coming together where as under wtaer or behind ripples makes you feel apart.
RESPONSE TO ALBAM GROSDIDIER
As a viewer I love this photo as her dad I hate it. The photo is interpreting Alban drowning photo. By increasing the contrast and making it black and white the ripples and light reflections are far more effective. With the girls eyes closed, her under water with her arms out and bubbles coming out of her mouth it really looks like the last breath. The effects makes you think she is now apart. dDropping in to the dark water.
BILL KOUIRINIS
These sketches really make you look closely t understand them. the blurred nature leaves much to interpretation but keeps a contatant theme. This effect keeps you apart from the picture but the non dominating factors means you see a new line or new shadow each time.
RESPONSE TO BILL KOUIRINIS
To recreate this effect i took two pictures and blurred them at different levels. I have ensured there are no doinating factors in each photo but the viewer can see what the focus should be. I feel the sepia pictureis more effective as the ripples around the canoe help add a better dimension for the viewer. The blurred nature keeps you apart from the picture making it look like you are llooking in to the photo.
CARLO VAN DE ROER
Carlo photos wash out a lot of the colour but uses a coloured dot to draw you in and see the small details in each photoo. The dot gives a spiritual feel to the image which makes you feel apart of the photo. I really like his work as no part of the photo is really detailed meaning you catch yourself looking harder to see what is there.
RESPONSE TO CARLO VAN DE ROER
These photos were taken on the beach in Eastbourne and in Thailand. I ensured each photo has a small focus that was placed by the cloured dot. As with Carlos work you find your self dran in to the photo looking for detail to be apart of the picturre and then trying to understand the significance of the colouured dots.

RESPONSE TO RICHARD BIINGHAM
In this photo I have recreated Richards panoramic scene. I have taken five photos on a tripod of a 180 dgreee view. I have then precisely ehanced each one so the all match (Contrast, brightness and tome), I then cropped them so they fit in to one and other making a panoramic photo which you could not get with one shot. I like this photo as it shows a beautiful day with the sun glittering of the sea and makes you feel relaxed as if you were there enjoying the view.
Another technique of Richards is to develop old films of photos of nivc views or woodlands. I have kept with my them of water and taken a scenice picture of the the sea the beachy head. To recreate the old film being developed i have blurred and misines the bottom right corner. I have purposely taken out the railing and replaces with wood of groins but not lined it up. This shows the effect if the film is not developed properly. Once again this is a relaxing feeling that most people can relate to and want to be appart of.
FURTHER RESEARCH ANDY WARHO
I like Andys work because he uses clour to change a repeated photo. Because each picture has different vibrant colours that is what draws your eye. It also means the photos are all together bt pulled apart by colour
AMY RODCHESTER
Amys work is really effective as different photos are pulled togthers by a common shape. She mmakes what would b simple photos in to one whole phooto by using consistant shapes and colours.

INITIAL IDEA 1
INITIAL IDEA 1 This is a photo of the back of my house. It should be viewd in landscape at at approximately A4 size. I have cropped the picture so only a small section is in the back ground but I kept the flowers of the grden in the foreground to give the photo depth. I have placed the flowers along the bottom and up one side as this takes you to the window which draws your eyes across the whole photo. By changing the clour of water and the swimmer (me) to sepia and using it to fill the windows and doors it gives a darker mood to the picture. This is enhanced by the coloured hand on the window making you feel he wants too escape. The photos were all taken by me. The water pic I used a tripod and self timer in the swimming pool. The house picture was taken in the day in my back garden. It relates to the topic of apar and together as I have made two environemtns that are apart from each other. In the house is dark and dangerous with the swimmer looking out in to a clourfull friendly envoronment. By having the friendly feeling outside and the cloured hand on the window I have made thhe vewer sense the danger in the photoand feel uneasy looking through the glass. In this response I have played oon the drowning image by Alban Grosdidier. Instead of just usng the water above I have included a whole scene but still shows someone trapped in water.
INIITIAL IDEA 2
INITIAL IDEA 2 This is a photo I took sitting on the beach looking out to see, On first refection it is a clam picture of two boats sailing on a lovely day. When the viewer looks closely they will see there is in fact somebody under the sea. For the vuewer to fully appreciate this picture I have enhanced the colours and the contract and bought the boats in nearer. As I used a tripod to take the photo the quality of the boats stay true even after zooming in. The swimmer is my daughter in the pool. I asked her to swim under water and look up at me. I copied her over the sea with a high feather, drecreased the capacitiy of the picture then super imposed thhe edges to make it less obvious. By really reducing the capacity and slightly blurring the swimmer you cannot make out her facial expresion leaving the viewer to their own opinions. is she under water struggling to breath or is she enjoying herself just like the boats. This split opinion really brings in the context of apart and toogether, Are they both enjoying the sea or is one in trouble? To further enhance the quality of the photo I kept to the rule of thirds. I cropped the picture so the sky line takes you across the top third. Isplit the boaats to ensure they were not central and then placed the swimmer from the bottom to the middle. All these combinations ensure the veiwers eyes is taken all around the photo. In blurring the picture in places I have used Bil Kouirinis methods but I also took on board Richards Billingahms ideas of panaramic photos. Combined I feel this is a nice calm photo, however if the viewer sees the swimming in a different light this will change.
INITIAL IDEA 3
INITIIAL IDEA 3 This is a photo of me upside down in a swimming pool. I managed to take this using a tripod and a camera on self time. At first this picture is quite dark as it looks as though I am fallling to the floor with air coming out of my mouth. By repeating the same picture 4 times increasing the contrast of each and changing the clour and hue of both the bubbles and the water to a vibrant colour the mood really changes. The veiwer is no longer taken by the fact I am upside down but by the colours. They really grab the attention and with the bubbles in another clour is just looks as if they are moving the right way. By manipulating the photo this way it now gives a feeling of energy. It looks like it is apart from real life, a move toward a dream land where it does not matter which way is up or down. This idea came from two sources. Firstly I wanted to move away from the dark side of a trapped swimmer and then researching Andy warho. By using a similar template to his I have used the contrast and the light of water combined with vbrant coulours to create a
DEVELOPED IDEA 1
DEVELOPED IDEA 1 From my initial idea I really liked the way I created two different environments and the way I turned an ordinary house in to a dangerous pool. To further enhance the image of the house I have included to large fish swimming ppast the door. The fish are actually goldfish from my house. I took the photo in day light through the fish tank glass. The fish have been blurred in the phototo show how blurry and dirty the water is. This effect allows the viewer to fullly understand the danger of being in this water. The coloured hand on the window showing the swimmer wants to get out. Afterseeing this photos further manipulations could be made. I could change the clour of the bubbles to match the flowers near the windo. This would had pull the viewers eye across the photo. I could also enhance the colours of the flowers outside to help convince the viewer that is is safe outside but dangerous within.
DEVELOPED IDEA 2
DEVELOPED IDEA 2 After adding to the danger side of within the house I wanted to really pull the two worlds apart by showing that the outside is friendly and warm. At first I tried to increase the brightness but this took away the effects of the dark windows and doors. Using my further research of Amy Rodchester I liked the ideas of balls or bubbles in my photo. By putting these in I have now made the viewer look though a nice bubby world with flowers and colour to the danger of the windows. To enahnce this effect I have also cut a bubble like border around the photo. This really helps bring the bubbles to life and draw the viewers eye in. I decided not to change to clour of the bubbles out of the swimmers mouth as they fitted nicely with the bubble shape over them and the viewer would have to decide where the bubbles are originating from, making them think about and therefore remember the photo.
FINAL IDEA
FINAL IDEA My final two photos are to be viewed in landscape in A3 size sitting next to each other. Each photo consysts of several layers that have been manipulated to help enhance the photo. The photo itself tells two stories of a house. Although it is together as one house it is torn apart by the stories. The back of the house shows how water can be enjoyed, how the colours and contours can make you feel happy. The front of the house makes you nervous, even scared. Thhrough water covered glass It shows the dark side of water with people trapped, sinking to the bottom where water colour changes. The photo is bought together with both sides acting as a fish bowl. The water photo was created in photo shop. Each photo was cropped, the contrast enhanced and colour changed, I then copied on to the photo of the house re sized it to the window and brought the frames / seals from the back to the front. I also made the front of the house darker and covered it with water coloured glass (with reduced capacity) to emphasise the dark mood. I took the picture of the back of the house at a low angle. This really gave the picture more depth and as it was not striaght it draws the eye further in. This final piece has been influenced through my research. I loved the effect my response to Michael Wolfs work had on the photos and wanted to re create this and use it to influence the moood of my photo. Both Chuck Close and Andy Warho worked in squares. This really helped me develop the idea of coloured windows in the relevant shapes. Finally there was Alban Grosdidier. His work with water really influenced me and opened my eyes to the effect water can give with both light reflections and the contour lines of the ripples. I am really pleased with this final piece. It really shows how I have developed as an artist, photographer and phot manipulater. If I were to do this again I would like to have included water coming out of the windows and more clouds in the sky for the front picture to further darken the mood.
