Totnes Festival A message from Councillor Judy Westacott, Chair of the Totnes Festival Committee Welcome to Totnes Festival! Through our festival, people from the area celebrate all aspects of local (and not so local) life including art, dance, theatre, film, music, outdoor events, ecology… or perhaps they just want to demonstrate that community spirit is alive and well in Totnes! Once again the people, organisations, charities, businesses and institutions of the town have pulled out all the stops to put on a festival that promises to be as diverse and vibrant as Totnes itself. We invite you to Totnes to be a part of the party. I would like to thank Dartington for being our main supporter both in terms of helping us produce our promotional material and also in contributing stimulating events of their own for the programme. Thanks also to the many people working behind the scenes to bring the festival together, but most of all thanks to the people of Totnes who make all of this possible!
A message from Vaughan Lindsay, CEO of festival sponsors The Dartington Hall Trust. Dartington is delighted to support Totnes Festival, a truly community-driven festival, again in 2011. This year’s festival programme features a remarkably broad range of activities over the ten days– reflecting the diversity of Totnes and the surrounding area. As part of the festival Dartington is presenting a number of events that represent our charitable work, particularly in the arts and education, from performances and exhibitions to our first ever outdoor film festival. We look forward to seeing you at some of the events on offer, and wish every one taking part a successful and joyful festival.
How to use this programme Events are arranged in date order, where events run over several days their main entry in the programme may appear on the start day only. To see at a glance all the events on any particular day, look at the listings in the centrefold of the programme or visit the website.
Check out the website for more information To find out more about all the events, artists and venues for this year’s festival check out the website at www.totnesfestival.com www.totnesfestival.com

Dartington presents: Power of Place 3 – 18 September 2011 The Gallery - FREE – donations welcome Aller Park – Tickets: £3.50 (Donations to the Dartington Hall film restoration project)
Two Exhibitions curated by artist Alice Leach celebrating the cultural legacy of Dartington Hall School 1926 – 1987 The Gallery - Art Exhibition
An exhibition focusing on the pre-war years of Dartington Hall School to include some rarely seen pieces from the Dartington Trust’s Collection. The collection shows the extraordinary wealth of artists teaching in the early years, such as Cecil Collins and Mark Tobey, Bernard and David Leach and Hein Heckroth, who later went on to win an Oscar for his set designs for “The Red Shoes”. Other works to be exhibited include pieces by the potter Bernie Forrester, Breon O’Casey, Rachel Nicholson, and a unique painting of High Cross House by Lord Young of Dartington painted whilst at school. A number of these works reside in the hands of Ex-Dartingtonians and have never been seen publicly.
Aller Park - Photography Exhibition
Formerly the junior school building, Aller Park will temporarily re-open to stage a smaller exhibition of mainly unseen black and white photographs, documenting the life of the school. Another room will hold an audio memory box where people can leave their thoughts and Aune Head Arts will be providing an eerie sound backdrop for visitors.
