4 -13 September 2009 supported by

Totnes Festival A message from Councillor Judy Westacott, Chair of the Totnes Festival Committee Here we are again with the fourth Totnes Festival and I would like to thank and introduce our new supporter: Dartington, who have enabled the festival to go ahead this year. Also huge thanks to the Devon Community Foundation for their assistance, too. The Totnes Festival exists to showcase the many talents, interests and passions of local people. It is very easy to take all the things that go on in our town for granted in the hubbub of our everyday lives but, through the festival, we want people to take a step back and see the richness, depth and breadth of amazing activities that local people are involved in. Even a quick glance through the programme reveals a diversity of events that is rare, if not unique for a town of Totnes’ size. I believe we should all celebrate our unique culture during the festival and you are all invited to the party!

A message from Vaughan Lindsay, CEO of Dartington Hall Trust Dartington is delighted to be supporting this year’s Totnes Festival. As a charity with a long-standing commitment to the arts, social justice and sustainability, we are looking forward to working with the Festival organisers and the Totnes community in presenting such a varied programme of events. We are happy to be able to support the Festival with a variety of events that reflect our charitable work. Colombian singer Totó la Momposina (cover photo) will be making a rare UK appearance in the Great Hall on the 10th Sept. We are also looking forward to seeing you at our interactive consultation day at the Mansion House on the 4th Sept to hear your views on care for older people and our proposal to create an Abundant Life retirement community on the estate. We’re also delighted to be able to support emerging local film-makers at the Barn Cinema and The Barrel House as part of Shoot - The Totnes Short Film Festival. Everyone at Dartington is looking forward to playing their part in this vibrant community event. We wish the Festival, its organisers and everyone taking part every success in 2009. For more information on Dartington, the charity and its work please visit www.dartington.org.

Totnes Festival: 4 September The Abundant Life Project Friday 4th September 2009 10am -7pm  The Mansion, Fore Street, Totnes

All sessions are free.

The Abundant Life Project- Join the Big Consultation! Have you planned for later life? Are you interested in joining a community which provides opportunities for stimulation, creativity and personal development alongside support for life? The Dartington Hall Trust invites you to join the discussion about our latest project, Abundant Life. We are planning to create approximately 100 apartments, of varying tenure options (owned, shared ownership and rented) on the Dartington estate. In this vibrant community, residents will be able to draw upon support services in a way that enhances rather than compromises independence. A gym, allotments, workshops and a library are all planned and will be accessible to local people as well as residents. To learn more, join us at one of eight fully interactive consultation sessions on Friday 4th September 2009 at the Mansion House, Fore Street, Totnes. At each session, Celia Atherton, Director of Social Justice at Dartington, will give you more information on the project and hear what you, your friends and the wider community think. Sessions will take place every hour, on the hour between 10.00am and 6.00pm (not 1.00pm) and will use the latest ‘Who wants to be a millionaire?’ technology. This is your chance to learn more and have your say. We look forward to seeing you there. Photo: The Rose Garden Retirement Village- ExtraCare Charitable Trust, Hereford

We invite members of the local community to air their voices and contribute to this message by joining us to participate in a world-cafe style discussion. Time will also be given to other creative contributions you may wish to make. Chairing the event will be Charlie McConnell, Director of Schumacher College and the wider sustainability activities at Dartington. We look forward to seeing you there.
