Meet the Geeks Seminar Series Every 4th Tuesday of the month held in the CSC Commonwealth seminar room from 4pm-5pm. Free pizza and drinks. Open and accessible to all! The series will showcase various bioinformatics techniques. We’ll tell you what we are using and why, useful parameters and gotchas, what the results should look like and which stats to run. 29 October 2013 Prashant Srivatsava Transcription factor motif discovery Abstract: DNA sequence motifs can be defined as short and recurring patterns of nucleotides in the genome that are often associated with a biological function. These ‘motifs’ are often indicative of sequence-specific binding sites for proteins such as nucleases and transcription factors. Sequence motifs are becoming increasingly important in defining regulatory networks and deciphering the regulatory program of individual genes This talk will focus on: Definition of DNA sequence motifs, search for instances of known motifs (eg. transcription factor binding sites), de novo motif discovery and their potential applications.

Forthcoming schedule to be announced.
