A total of 773 people were examind and treated at the Rasuwa Community Eye Centre and a further 488 people were treated at the satelite clinic at Kalikasthan. 728 people received spectacles and 201 received medications.

Buyers’ interest to be piqued Slumping stocks and resulting lower interest rates could mean ‘buy now’. By SCOTT WOODSIDE THE downturn in the world stock markets will result in lower interest rates for the Perth property market, according to Jones Ballard Property Group director Adrian Ballard. Mr Ballard said a number of major banks had already dropped their long-term fixed interest rates in response to the slump in the global stock market. “If events of 2008 are repeated, when there was also a major fall in stock market values, then interest rates in Australia should fall significantly over the coming months,” he said. “Rises in interest rates during 2010 had an adverse effect on the Perth property market by making property less
affordable, especially for firsthome buyers. “This resulted in a major blow-out in the number of properties listed for sale in Perth, which now totals 17,000.” Mr Ballard said that it now took an average of 82 days to sell a home in Perth – an increase of 16 days compared to a year ago. “Lower interest rates should see the number of properties listed for sale begin to fall over the coming months as buyers become more active in the property market,” he said. “Jones Ballard has recorded a rising number of enquiries from property buyers over the last month due to the fact that interest rates were forecast to remain stable. With interest rates now expected to fall, we expect these inquiries to now turn into actual sales. “In particular, our company expects greater activity from property investors. Our property management department
is now recording rental vacancy rates below 2 per cent in recent months and as a result, weekly rents are beginning to rise.” Mr Ballard said lower interest rates would encourage more investors to purchase properties in Perth, especially as the underlying fundamentals of the WA economy still remained strong. “In times of economic uncertainty, investors focus on safe investments, and one of the safest is property, particularly in WA, which is one of the strongest economies in Australia,” he said. “The latest investment figures show that in Western Australia there is currently $264 billion (worth of) major projects that are under way or under consideration – a 19 per cent increase compared to the March quarter. “Despite the uncertainty in the stock market, the prospects for the Perth real estate market look very positive during the coming twelve months.” ■
