Letter from the editor By Mary Editors Desk Youth Culture People in rural areas did not like clothing of people in big cities they argued that this is not what should be worn to church. They thought that the dresses were too short and that they wore too much make up. Clothing had become lighter, simpler, and looser. Girls wore pantelets, which closely resembled male attire. At the start of war girls had bobs and they were all the same now they have developed their own styles. In the 1920s young women started wearing more makeup especially at night when they went out to listen to jazz. Jazz is spreading all over the city. Flappers come out at night and go to clubs and listen to the jazz. Jazz took people back to the 1917 when they were fearing for the health and safety of the U.S Navy and sailors. The people in the rural areas did not like what they wore they said it was too short. They also said they wore way too much makeup. Their overall argument was that they would not wear that to church. 2
Crime and Prohibition:Introduction
There was different beliefs on whether liquor should be illegal, people said that the prohibition will usher in a new era of happiness, health, and righteousness. Before the prohibition people were allowed to drink liquor. In fact, Liquor had many uses other than satisfying certain individuals. It was used for religious ceremonies and doctors used it for treating illness. But, instead of what was anticipated, for thirteen years Americans were focused on liquor like never before.
To begin with, Prohibition is the 18th Amendment that banned the sale, production, and consumption of alcohol in the U.S. The Volstead Act, which was passed by Congress enforced the law. They not only passed these laws but also made a call to action. This helped families struggling with wealth and prevented families from going poor.

Crime and Prohibition: Advantages
Although, there was a few cons about the law, the pros outnumbered. After the prohibition, there was a major decline in arrests for drunkenness. It reduced absenteeism which resulted in an increase of efficiency in the workplace. There was also a major decline in hospitalization for alcoholism, and less liver related medical problems. To sum it up, although liquor played a big role in people’s life, its prohibition helped not only Americans but also America.
The prohibition came along with many disadvantages. There was a crucial increase in crime and gangs. Although, many people known as “Wet” broke the law and drank illegally, there was also people known as “Dry” who didn’t. In the 1919’s people would send bombs threw the mail. The Prohibition not only harmed lives but caused a major loss in taxes and jobs.

Why Gangsters? Why Crime?
Since Prohibition has been enforced there has been a lot more gangsters about, and a lot more crime. Right now I live in Chicago and there is a gang boss named Al Capone, some people call him “Scarface”, but nobody but his executives have actually seen him. Me and my family are too scared to do anything because we could be one of the people that are found dead on the streets every morning! It’s surprising that Al Capone has a rival, his name is Bugsy Moran. Moran hates Capone and they have a bitter rivalry. The St. Valentine's Day Massacre was an attempt on Moran’s life, 6 of his men were murdered, as I later found out in the papers. Me and my family are starting to pack up the house. I’ m wanting to move to New York, but my wife doesn’t like the idea. I wonder where we should move? Where do you think I should move?

Crime and Prohibition: Conclusion
In conclusion, we can see there are both advantages and disadvantages to the prohibition. The crime and illegal drinking wasn’t necessarily the best part, but, the idea to stop abuse and drunkenness was substantial. Although, there was a difference of opinion on whether liquor should be banned, the law was for a good cause.

Sharifa’s letter to the editor: Religion vs. Science Dear Editor, There is a lot of evidence that monkeys, swines, and some other animals are our descendents. The scopes Monkey Trial states that we started from Apes. On the other hand, I believe that we didn’t although they are our descendants. I believe that there was people in the past who committed blasphemy and God transformed them into those animals and that’s why we have like genes and many similarities. Most people might hear what i’m saying and think i’m crazy but, In The Bible, Torah, and Quran it talks about people sinning and God transforming them to something other than human. The book of Genesis chapter 19 verse 26 it talks about Lot’s wife being turned into a pillar of salt when she violated the divine prohibition against looking back at Sodom. In the Quran chapter 5 verse 60 it says “They are those whom Allah (God) has cast aside and on whom his wrath has fallen and of whom he has made some as apes and swine.” These are just a few of the many examples found in religious sources. To conclude, There is a difference of opinion on whether animals are our descendents or not. It was banned it in schools to teach anything that goes against the divine creation of man. Christian Fundementalists, “ It couldn’t be true it goes against the Bible and Divine creation of man.”

Ben’s Letter to the Editor: Urban Life
Dear Editor Cities are the bees knees! This is because it’s fun to be a crasher. I came from a far away town with nothing to do, just a bunch of wall flowers hanging out. When I turned 16 my parents kicked me out to find my own job because there just wasn’t enough room at home. So I came to the big city. I was hoping to find a job, but I found a whole lot more. Right now I have a good job as an auto mechanic, with good pay. I work six days a week and I have one night to be on the streets trying to get a weed. When I went out, I learned where to look for clubs that had big jazz musicians and flappers, lots of flappers. If I weaseled by accident I would feel ashamed and quickly apologize. I took me a couple of years to get a flapper of my own. We went to a lot of petting parties. After a couple of years she became my police dog. After engagement we continued to go to a lot of jazz clubs. Life is good in the cities!
Dear Editor, I strongly agree with your article about the young people of our society. The clothing they wear and the music they listen to is great. The flappers outfits are a great way for girls to express themselves. I don’t care what the adults in rural areas say. The one hour dress is just amazing. Mary Brooks Picken knew what she was doing when she created the one hour dress. Many people don’t like flapper dresses or the one hour dress because its is too short in their opinion but I think they are in and cool. Also the makeup is great they can express themselves young women use to not wear a lot of makeup but now they wear tons of makeup especially at night. Again people in rural areas did not agree with it and argued that this is not what young women should be wearing that they would not be wearing that to church. Hair trends are just awesome in the beginning of the war almost all girls had bobs but now they are starting to have more original hair styles. I mean many girls still have bobs but they are many different kinds like the castle bob and the dutch bob. And now waves are the rage. The music is great jazz i could listen to all day. Also at night going to clubs and listening to music is amazing. I mean who cares what people from rural areas say the changes to style and appearance and music is great for young women it is so much easier for them to express themselves now.People in rural areas argue that everything is too short and not appropriate. All the changes to the society of young women is great.

Adam’s Letter to the Editor Dear Editor,
Prohibition is also known as the 18th Amendment banned our sale, production, and transport of alcohol in the US. The Volstead Act is a law that enforces and supports prohibition. They passed these laws because families in America were all going poor because fathers, husbands, and grandfathers would go out and spend all their families money on alcohol. There are two sides to this act the drys and the wets. The drys are people that believe prohibition is good for americans. They think it is helping their families keep their money. Drys are mostly supported by the women because it benefits them more than the men and it benefits the children. Men are bringing home their paychecks for the families instead of spending it all on alcohol. People on the drys side are usually women because prohibition took away a lot of abuse. Prohibition has a lot of positive to it with a few negatives. The positives of prohibition are men are bringing home their paychecks. Women are not being abused as much by men anymore. Families are not in debt anymore because the money the men make don't go to drinks and gambling. Men are able to do their jobs better now that they're not either drunk at work or hung over.
The wets during prohibition were the people who needed alcohol or the ones that found ways around the prohibition. Wets believed that prohibition did not stop what it was trying to but instead made more illegal activity. The wets want the 18th amendment to be repealed more than anything else. Most people on their side are usually men, congressmen, and people living in cities. There are a lot of ways to get around prohibition. People would go to the doctor and either bribe them or the doctor would just prescribe them alcohol. There were also places called speakeasies, they are underground bars selling alcohol to people. Then all over the country people are delivering illegal alcohol to people for a hardy price.

Letter to the editor: Youth Culture By: Mariana Trujillo Dear Editor, There was people called flappers. Their dresses were way too short and they thought they could do anything they wanted. Women are more independent, they stayed out late and partied all day long. I agreed with our youth society because the music were amazing..
