Doctor’s orders Legend goes that Hippocrates was descended from the legendary Greek hero Hercules. Born in about 460 bce on the island of Kos in Greece, Hippocrates enjoyed an excellent education. His father was a DOCTOR and Hippocates learned medicine from him. When Hippocrates himself became a doctor, he established a school of medicine on Kos and taught students everything he knew.

Flemish physician Andreas Vesalius wrote one of the most important books on human anatomy – De Humani Corporis FabriCa – in 1543. It featured detailed anatomical illustrations. 14
In 1816, French physician René Laënnec invented the stethoscope. Replacing earlier paper versions, the LaënneC stetHosCope was made from wood with a single earpiece for doctors to listen to the heart and lungs.
