Great thinker Averroës was born in 1126 in Córdoba, Spain. Growing up, he studied science, religion, medicine, and philosophy. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, he became CHIEF JUDGE of Seville in 1169. Two years later, Averroës returned to Córdoba to study the forgotten work of Aristotle, who was largely ignored by many thinkers at the time.

Averroës’s devotion to Islam and skill as a mathematician and physician showed it was possible to combine religion and science instead of seeing them as separate subjects. He also wrote his own INFLUENTIAL book called General Medicine. After he died in 1198, European universities honoured him by offering courses in his teachings.
