THE FIRST TRULY BLIGHT RESISTANT POTATO This is the potato we Irish gardeners have waited for since the famine, the first truly blight resistant varieties of potatoes. For over 50 years the Savari family in Hungary have been breeding blight and virus resistant varieties of potatoes. The newly released varieties of Sarpo Mira and Axona have unprecedented levels of blight resistance without the necessity of chemical sprays. Sarpo is the first variety to score 9 out of 9 in commercial evaluations against blight. The Savari trust, set up at University Farm Wales, Bangor, under the direction of Dr David Shaw, an acknowledged world blight expert who has worked on fungal disease for over 35, years have trialed and developed these potatoes for the Irish and British growers. Available exclusively from Thompson & Morgan @ Mr Middleton Garden Shop.

BLACKBERRY LITTLE BLACK PRINCE

A breakthrough in the breeding of blackberries for gardens and patios , it is thornless, it does not need a cumbersome support (because its shoots are stable and upright) and it bears fruit directly on this year’s canes. And most importantly, Little Black Prince already bears large, regularly shaped, tasty, blackberries from the beginning of July and the harvest does not cease until the first frosts. And then there is another advantage in which this new blackberry variety from the Lubera breeding programme differs from all other blackberries: it is extremely compact and does not grow higher than 70-100 cm. This makes it ideal for using as a potted plant on a balcony or terrace.

BOYSENBERRIES

TAYBERRY

A cross between a raspberry and blackberry, the loganberry is generally slightly longer than a raspberry with a juicier and sharper flavour. Berries should be allowed to darken to a deep purple colour before picking to obtain the best flavoured fruit. Loganberry plants are sturdy and more disease and frost resistant than many other berry varieties and as berries of varying maturity may grow on a single plant, it will usually produce fruit throughout August and September. Plants continue to fruit for around 15 years.

Try honeyberries for an unusual fruit to add to your five a day! These sweet blueberry-like fruits have been eaten for years in their native Siberia, and can be enjoyed straight from the bush, or baked in jams, pies and muffins. The sweet taste is similar to that of blueberries, with a slight aftertaste of honey. They are high in antioxidants too! The oval blackblue honeyberries begin to ripen in early June, in the first or second year after planting. This exceptionally hardy shrub is long lived and easy to grow, producing more delicious berries year upon year. Height and spread: 120cm (48”).
