...an aeriel view of Mount Whaleback which highlight the idea of escapism. The form is derived through the topography of the surrounding..

Av

//aeriel_view //mid_semester //eden_like_structure

The concept in portraying this Eden like atmosphere in Mount Newman has been take form an ideology of Locus Amoenus which a Garden of Eden like atmosphere quoted from The Book of Zechariah and by several literature such as Michelangelo, Edmund Spenser and Shakespeare. Michelangelo seen this Eden as a place of love and sexuality and same ideas of Edmund Spenser which a place of treacherous garden, bower of bliss and malign sexuality . In interpreting poetry Shakespeare wrote a poem which are Venus and Adonis, where green world with the space lies outside the city limits, a liminal space where erotic passion can be freely explored , away from civilization and social order. In the other view of this Eden is define by Book of Zechariah which emphasize the Garden of God which are fill with trees and water flow. In a bigger picture Locus Amoneus is define as the above by basic element which play a huge role in creating an escapism which are threes, grass and water. This element create a horizon landscape in mind which highlighted the differences between urban and rural file. It also a form of refuge from possesses of time and mortality. It also a pleasant spot a phase of modern scholar to refer to the set of an idyllic landscape, typically containing trees and shade a grassy meadow running water song birds and cool breezes. Virginl Eclogues also describe the locus amoenus as a pleasant place and the place of amenity. The ethymology of amoenus indicated a place without wall and boundaries and without any sort of business or in simpler terms is without any kind of profit. This creates a phenomenological aesthetic of atmosphere which give self-consciousness for the person. It is also stated that indispensable element of the locus amoenus in Virgil Ecolues it is umbra which mean shade. This is also associated with coolness, moisture and greenness. Virgil introduce shade and shadow into the pastoral landscape. Umbra represent a lot of meaning that can probably act as shade and shadow. The virgil poem regarding locus amoenus is not an image or a landscape but an atmosphere of natural beauty. Nevertheless, the manner in which umbra is constellated with other insignia determine which of its senses is seen to shine brightest. Timothy Saunder for example in his Bucolic Ecology, opposes his study to earlier nature focus reading of Virgil that tends to present bucolic space conservatively as a site for nostalgia and melancholy, that is to say for reflection upon the loss of some kind of holistic relationship to nature.

PROPOSAL : HIDDEN RESILIENCE (Scenario) ‘In a vast terrain of land on hot sunny day, with temperature reaching as high as 40celsius while working in sweat evaporating into salt in each second. Travelling for distances here and forth, wasting time by pass with a mirage of dreams emerging slowly, with a sound of “pop!” the dream disappears. Finishing touches are being put on the new site of the iconic entry piece into Newman - the Stan and Ella Hilditch statue - after it was moved from its original location because of a native title dispute. The massive, 12m-high, cut steel statue depicts the founder of Mt Whaleback and his wife. It was originally situated on a hill along the Great Northern Highway, but Shire of East Pilbara chief executive Allen Cooper said after discussions with BHP and the Nyiyaparli Aboriginal people, a new location was found. “What happened previously was there was an issue with a native title claim as it was on another hill and BHP had to remove it,” he said. “The statue has now been reinstated, but more towards the northern entrance to town - the Newman Drive entrance. So it has a good view out to the ore bodies in the east, and certainly, you can see it from the distance.” Stan and Ella Hilditch became central to the history of Newman, after accidentally stumbling upon the iron ore of Mt Whaleback while out prospecting for manganese. Former Newman Visitor Centre manager Mere White said when Stan Hilditch first climbed Mt Whaleback, he was using it as a vantage point to look for manganese. “Hilditch’s compass spun wildly and he realised he was standing on one of the largest deposits of iron ore in the world,” she said. At that time, there was an Australian Government embargo on the export of iron ore because of fears that the country’s resources were in short supply. At the time of their discovery, Stan said to Ella: “We probably won’t have a chance to do anything in our lifetime, but we may, so let’s make a pact - just you and me - to tell nobody”. A carpark and walkways around the statue are yet to be finalised.

At the time of their discovery, Stan said to Ella: “We probably won’t have a chance to do anything in our lifetime, but we may, so let’s make a pact - just you and me to tell nobody”.

Lastly on the home front, the monument to the late explorer/ prospecting couple Stan and Ella Hilditch has been unceremoniously removed from its prominent position on a hill top near the southern entry road into Newman, no clear reason has as yet been offered as to why the “Folks on the Hill” have been removed, but from the general word around town with no permission was sought or gained from the “People of the Land”. So its a political issue, sad to say.
