Chapter 1: All About Westward Expansion
Westward HO! The Westward Expansion made people want to move to the west. The Westward Expansion did amazing things to the U.S.A. The Louisiana Purchase In 1803, the United States bought the Louisiana Territory from France. The purchase was about $15 million. This was important because it doubled the size of our country overnight. The unknown land is west of the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains. We bought about 828,800 square miles. Lewis And Clark After President Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase was made, he sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the west. The Corps of Discovery began in may 14th 1804, in St.Louis. They got over 40 men to go with them. They traveled by boat up the Missouri River. The Native American woman Sacagawea joined as the interpreter . Lewis and Clark made Friends and traded with tribes. They made it to the Pacific Ocean in November 1805. They reached St.Louis in September 1806. Thier journey was over 7 thousand miles. They kept sketches of plants, animals, and maps. They went to see if they could get a water route to the Pacific Ocean. 2
Westward Expansion
In 1804, people began moving west. People used wagon trains. It was a long, hard trip and many didn’t survive. People used the Oregon Trail, California Trail, Mormon Trail, and the Santa Fe Trail. “Little idea had they known of the hardships, the perils and the deprivation that awaited them.” (3) by Lavinia Honeyman Porter. Pioneers went for gold, farming, and for religious freedom. It ended in 1890, by then there were 44 states. That's the affect the Louisiana Purchase made. Now you will learn about the affects the California Gold Rush made. Chapter 2 In January 24th 1848, a man working on Sutter’s Mill found something in the water. He tested to see if it was gold. It was gold! He told Mr.Sutter about the gold. The word spread quickly. Soon people everywhere came to get gold. That was the start of the California Gold Rush. The California Gold Rush Have you ever wondered about the California Gold Rush because it will be answered. It started in January 24th 1848. The start of the gold rush was in Coloma, California. Miners brought tools, a pickaxe, a shovel, a hoe, pan, bacon, sugar, and beans. A store made more than a miner. There were about 12million ounces of gold. About $15million today. The California Gold Rush boosted the United States. How Get Gold In California Gold Rush One of the most important things about the California Gold Rush is how they got gold. Only California Knew about the California Gold Rush for six months. July 1848, news went to Oregon. The people took boats and wagons. They crossed grasslands, deserts and mountains. All of the routes were dangerous. At the beginning miners got $300 per day. The late ones got $20 per month. The simplest method is panning. In panning you load dirt into a pan. Then you hold the pan under water for three minutes. It will wash the light dirt away leaving gold. To get gold you need a pan, shovel or a pickaxe. The miners worked for about 16 hours to 6 days per week. They discovered new methods. A miner will dig for gold for six months and return with enough gold for several years. Miners became farmers. Also new businesses started. Homes were built. People abandoned towns in search for more gold. That is how the California Gold Rush worked. 4
Chapter 3 The Impact Of The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush caused a lot of things. A lot of new businesses started and a lot of miners became farmers to provide for a living. The population boomed in California which meant a lot of people moved into California. The miners were so brave and determined. Lesson From California Gold Rush For you to get your hopes and dreams fulfilled you have to be brave and determined. The forty niners were so brave to go even though they could get sick and die. They were also brave even though they might not get enough money to survive. They were so determined that they were willing to put in the hard work to get gold. That's why you need to be brave and determined. 5
