Stage One: Egg The first stage of a chicken is a egg .A baby chick pecks out of its egg.

The hard shell protects the embryo inside.The embryo is an undeveloped chicken. The embryo grows a heart beak feathers and more.

In twenty days the chick breaks out.It uses its egg tooth.After the chick hatches the egg tooth breaks of its beak


Stage Two: Hatchling The chicks are wet and tired.After a while they fluff up.The chicks eat seeds insects and berries. Their mother keeps them safe. After a few weeks they start to molt.Molting means smooth feathers grow in their place. In six weeks the chicks are bigger.They need new feathers and molt again.

Stage Three: Growing Into Adults When the chicks are six months old they beacome adults.Adults grow wattles and combs.A hen and a rooster mate.The adults live in flocks.Each flock one rooster and twelve to fifteen hens.The flock lives eats and sleeps toghether. They roost above the ground when they sleep. Roosting is when seetling down to rest or sleep. It keeps them safe from predators.A chicken can live up to eight to ten years.


Stage Four: Laying Eggs After four months the hens can lay eggs.Then a rooster and a hen mate.Embryos will then grow inside the hens eggs.Not all eggs they lay have embryos.Those are the ones people eat.A hen lays a cluch of eggs.Each cluch has ten to twelve eggs.She sits on them to keep them warm.They will grow into new chickens.
