Looking for some great picture book activities?

Investigate these Story Sleuth products that examine Caldecott Award winning books. Designed to be conducted by a librarian for K-4 classes, the students consider the clues to determine which book is described.

Each unit lasts for 4 weeks. Students will evaluate story elements and artistic media while exercising critical thinking skills. $3.99 each.

Digital Citizenship

This unit includes a poster and double-sided bookmarks to use with students when discussing how to be a good Digital Citizen. It includes info about following an AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) as well as how to be safe while using the internet. There are also isolated pieces from the poster in case you wanted to use these pieces as the initial way to introduce the topic or for a final review.

Follow my blog for more ideas and resources! Destiny Search Assessment

I created these informal assessment cards because I wanted a quick way to gauge how my lesson went after I taught the five main ways to search for books using our Destiny catalog. The questions on the cards rotate between author, title, subject/keyword, and series. When I printed this, I selected 2 to a page, and then hole-punched them in the corner. I hung them on a ring, which allowed me to flip through different questions as students came up to check out their books.

Folktales, Fairy Tales, Fables, Oh My!

This unit includes a blank color poster, a blank black/white poster, name cards for Fairy Tales, Fables, Myths, Legends, and Tall Tales, and the definitions for each story (characters, settings, problems, and solutions). Each week, you teach a new type of folktale, fill in the anchor chart, and then read a picture book. The chart can also be used to review with students.

Dewey Decimal Assessment

I created these informal assessment cards because I wanted a quick way to practice the Dewey Decimal numbers with my students after we went over them in class. The questions on the cards rotate between all the 100 categories. I also included a set of blank cards so that you can make up your own questions. When I printed this, I selected 2 to a page, and then hole-punched them in the corner. I hung them on a ring, which allowed me to flip through different questions as students came up to check out their books.

Interactive Research I am blessed enough to run a library with a flexible schedule. This has allowed me to collaborate with teachers and create research projects that fit BOTH their curriculum needs and my information literacy curriculum. In fact, with the new curriculum being pushed by New York State, I am the Science and Social Studies for several classroom teachers. I have created several research projects in which the final product is an interactive report. If you don’t have a flexibly scheduled library, consider showing the project to your teachers. Let them know that you will use your library time to research, and they can put the project together in the classroom.

Be sure to swing over to The Library Patch’s Blog!! Click HERE when you are ready.

One of our biggest challenges as librarians is to promote reading among our students. I actually run a school-wide reading program that teachers can promote in their classrooms. The program is voluntary; however, I have a nearly one hundred percent participation rate. Check out the FREE Basic Independent Reading Program. The thematic ones are priced items.

This is my second year as a teacher librarian. I have also taught grades Kindergarten, Three, Six, Seven and Eight. And if that weren’t enough, I spend five years throughout all of this working as a literacy coach for part of my day. Needless to say I have a wealth of knowledge and am sharing it here with you!

My store includes reading and writing resources, not to mention math and science. I have a few free downloads, my feature item is VERY popular! Stop by and take a look, you might just find what you are looking for.

I am currently a TeacherLibrarian for Kindergarten to Sixth Grade. This Puppet Pals Interactive Story Telling Activity has been one of the most enjoyable, engaging and successful library projects I’ve been involved in. The kids have been inspired by books in our Picture Book Collection and then brought their own stories to life in our library/media center. So much fun!
