Modernism v.s. Traditionalism Debbie Dewley lives at home with her parents. Her mother has always been a housewife. Debbies father provides for the family. Debbie was raised in a religious household where she was taught that the bible is the literal interpretation of everything. Debbie does not want to be like her mother. Debbie has big dreams to move to the city, go to the movies or speakeasy and wear short dresses. Debbie even wants to cut her hair and wear make-up. Debbie and her parents represent the clash between traditionalists and modernists. Families around the nation are facing similar situations like Debbie's family. The clash between traditionalists and modernists is not going away. This clash of ideas has the potential to change youth for generations. The traditionalists believe that the values they have shouldn’t change. They believe that the modern ways are wrong and immoral. Traditionalists want to keep things the same that they have always been. They live in rural areas, and still use horses and carriages. Woman would have to act a certain way in rural areas. They have long hair, and had to wear long dresses to the and Traditionalists also believed in Creationism which says that God created the Universe itself and everything within it.
Traditionalists have good intentions. Their beliefs have been around for a long time. However, it is time to move beyond traditional beliefs. Modernists are bringing in a new era of beliefs that are complete opposite of traditional beliefs. For example, they believe in Evolution which is the theory that humans originated from a lesser form, like monkeys for example and they changed and got smarter over generations making us who we are today. But, not everyone has the same opinion or beliefs. Traditionalists think that everyone should believe the same thing, and for those who don’t have the same beliefs, could possibly get hurt by the traditionalists. This is unfair for those who have different beliefs. Modernists believe different things. They want to try new things, and do what they please. This is a good thing, because people can be whoever they want, and do what they want. They don’t have to follow everyone else’s beliefs. Modernism allows people more freedom than they’ve ever had. For example, women can wear shorter dresses, and do other things in public that they couldn’t do before. Overall, modernism is a great idea. People have more freedom than they’ve ever had. The newer transportation makes it easier to travel to further places. Cities also offer new things to do, so citizens can have fun. People can go to movies, see concerts, and even more. So overall, modernism is effective for lots of people. Everyone can believe what they want, and won’t get judged. Also, people have more freedom and can do more fun things in the cities.
The Gibson Girls Where have the Gibson Girls gone? Quincy Jagnow
The 20s has been a big step forward for everybody. But if anybody's gotten it the best, it’s been women. Women progressed in ways that seemed unimaginable at the time. In this article, we will go into depth and really figure out where the morals of these women have went, and how they've changed in the past few years. For starters, we see women begin to enter government. In 1920, the League of Women Voters: founded by Carrie Chapman, impacted women across America greatly. The group ultimately resulted in granting women their right to vote. In spite of that, we begin to see women elected into important parts of government. Such as: house of representatives, public office, and more. This also opened up the door for women to lobby lawmakers and ultimately enact legislation of special interest to women, such as the ERA(Equal Rights Amendment). The Equal Rights Amendment guaranteed sex not to be a factor in how people were treated, or how decisions are ruled out. And even though it hasn’t been ratified just yet, it’s been reintroduced to congress since it’s introduction. You also see a sudden spurt in women's education during this time period. By 1920, one of every four people graduating from college were women. In result, we see women starting to enter many professions that had been cut out for men prior to. Since, the number of women entering professional occupations has risen by about 50%. Women are becoming less and less dependant on their spouse, and at the same time, getting more and more of a grip on society and decision.

With women on the rise, they feel a sense of invincibility and rebelliousness. And rightfully so. They finally have a place in society. An ultimate say and decision for themselves to cst. We see women beginning to smoke and drink in public, cut their hair shorter, and wear skirts above their knees. These things that would be considered unacceptable and ignorant just years ago, is now what would seem normal or common behavior amongst most women. Considering everything that’s lead up to now, everything that’s worked out in womens favor, and their continual uprise is society, there is ample information to potentially argue that women's role and influence will continue to increase throughout the years.
Have we evolved, or were we created? Should evolution or creationism be taught in American schools and what’s the deal with the Scopes trial? By Gaven Forbes
Evolution Evolution is the idea that plants and animals originally evolved from a previous, simpler, form of a being. These evolutions took a lot of time to happen. They are said to have taken place over thousands or even millions of years. Generally the people who followed this were scientists. Modernists believed that both ways of natural selection and evolution of looking at the world could coexist.
Creationism Creationism is the belief that God created everything. It says that God created the universe as said in the Bible. Followers of Creationism believe that teaching evolution could be a bad thing. They think teaching evolution could lead people to accept social Darwinism. Darwinism means only the fittest members of the society will survive. Darwinism also means that characteristics judged whether or not people can reproduce.
The Scopes Trial The Scopes Trial was a very popular thing that's happened. The Scopes Trial occurred on July 10th, 1925. John Scopes violated the Tennessee state law against the teaching of Evolution. Thousands of people came from around the U.S. to see the trial while the population of the town is only one thousand. John got a fine but the Supreme Court struck down Tennessee’s anti-evolution law. It ended with saying that legislatures shouldn’t restrain the freedom of scientific inquiry, and that society should respect academic freedom.

Women’s Fashion Is women's fashion a threat to American values? Article by Danielle Christenson I do not believe that women's fashion is a threat to american values. Equality is an American value and what women wear is a part of them being equal. The things women wear would not be a threat but a great thing because it's a way for them to express who they are. The mothers of the young in the 1920s wore completely different thing than their children did then. The mothers in their youth wore corsets and several layers of clothing that covered her from neck to wrist to ankles. Usually they would either have short hair or if they had long hair then they would pin it up. A young women in their time would never be seen in a tavern, pretty much a bar. They would also never be seen smoking cigarettes. Whenever the mother would have a boyfriend, them being alone was a very rare thing. They wouldn't even be able to go on a date together with just them two. The way young women in the 1920s was a big change. Women got more scandalous and more confident. The necessary things that a women wore underneath was a bra, underpants, and silk stockings. Over top of that they wore either a silky dress or skirt. The dress or skirt would show anything below the knee and would usually be a low neckline. Women stated to wear their hair down more but they did keep the short hair style but the most popular hairstyle was a bob. They also wore quite a bit of makeup. People back then would call the women that were short haired and short skirted, Flappers. Flappers were known as rebels. Most of them drank, smoked cigarettes, and did lots of dances such as the Charleston and the Black Bottom. If she had a date then should wouldnt need a chaperone. A flapper would usually wear a short skirt, silk stockings, and a cloche hat. Business owners were always looking for ways to attract tourists so they came up with Beauty Pageants. Beauty Pageants were events that were head where young women compete against each other to win. The competition included a bathing suit portion. Most men loved that so they would pay money to see these young women in bathing suit. The clothing the women wore were very scandalous and if they were seen on the streets wearing this then they would probably be arrested.
The Youth of the 20’s Is the youth of the 20’s destroying American values? Austin Fitzgerald The youth is not destroying the values because they just want to have more freedom and try new things. However, the youth can be somewhat disrespectful. LIke they choose to ignore the elders. Dating in the 1920’s is different than the past. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just new ways of living. When a man wants to date a woman, he has to meet her parents. Once the man and the woman's parents meet, they must accept the man. If the parents accept the man and after a while, if the couple wants to go on a date, the parents must come with. With public dating, like in movies, there is less sexuality. Young adults have easy access to newer things. Such as, automobiles (like cars and trains), movies, books, and magazines. Most of the magazines spread images of the good life. Women also have more freedom now. They are wearing shorter skirts and skimpy swimsuits.
The teenagers of the 20’s would ignore their elders, because they don’t believe what there parents said. The teenagers want more freedom and the parents were holding them back from that. Young people are being reckless and immoral. However, they just want to try new things and have more freedom, but the elders (or those who live in rural areas) feel like these new ideas are bad. So overall, the youth isn’t destroying american values. They are just young and want to have fun.
Cultural Values Are the cultural values of cities good for america? Article by Rachel Rugger Post World War I is the start of a new era- modernism. Soldiers are returning from war and want to move to urban areas. At this point, more than 50% of people are living in urban areas rather than rural! Because of this, farmers are facing economic downturn. Income for farmers is shrinking and people are losing their farms. Most people in rural areas hate the new ways of behaving, they think modernism is a sin. The new urban areas offer tons of new things to do. Like, going to the movies, attend concerts, drinking, gambling, and couples have the choice of going on casual dates. The automobiles have improved as well, and they play a crucial role in modernizing society. Instead of horses and carriages like traditionalists use, modernists are using cars and trains.
Urban America provides a lot more freedom overall. They are losing some of their morals, but at least women have a lot more freedom than they used to. They are allowed to do romantic things, drink, smoke cigarettes and other things in public that they couldn’t before. Also, with new technology, life is easier for women. Vacuums, refrigerators, toasters and other home appliances make homework easier for women. But not just for women, there are other new technologies that are useful too. Automobiles, telephones, electricity, and modern sewer systems are all great examples of industrial growth. However, there are negative aspects of urbanization. The amount of alcohol consumption is growing drastically. Also, the amount of organized crime is growing too. And of course with population comes pollution. There is a lot less pollution in rural areas due to less factories and cars.
