Bismarck Tower

On the south borders of Hildburghausen you find the Stadtberg, a hill that is 496mhigh. In 1892 a 15m-high observation tower was erected. The tower was named “Bismarck Tower in 1905, on the occasion of the 90th birthday of Otto von Bismarck. Between 1869 and 1934 240 of such towers (sometimes also columns) were constructed to honor the first chancellor of the German Empire, Otto von Bismarck. The towers are located within the German borders of 1914. Today 184 of them are located on German territory.

From the top of the tower you have a wonderful view of the town and its surroundings.

From 1967 to 1991 the area around the Bismarck Tower became a restricted zone as it served as a Soviet air surveillance base. The remnants of that base could be visited after 1991.

On 3rd October, 1998 the Bismarck Tower was reopened. The former army base is used by a private investor to breed horses and other animals.

The tower is always worth a visit. We are waiting for you ď Š Team Germany
