Hildburghausen Townhall
The townhall of Hildburghausen at the in the north-east-edge of the market square was built in 1375. It is the oldest building in town.
The facade still shows that the building was used as a trading place.
In the year 1572 a heavy storm destroyed the town hall so it was rebuilt in the year 1595, as a renaissance building. On the ground floor of the building there are still remnants of its gothic predecessor.
Apart from its colour - the town hall was green from the 1970s to 90s – there haven’t been lots of changes until 1995.
Today the town hall offers a permanent exhibition, a public library named after Joseph Meyer, the tourist information and a wedding room. Until 1919 the tower apartment was inhabited. There the night watch lived with his family.
