Written Poems and Analysis

Does it mean I am weak

Analysis This is my concrete poem it is shaped as a teardrop because of its message “cry, give up it doesn’t mean your weak.” A teardrop isn’t always a bad thing, sometimes we shed a tear cause of laughter or their just happy tears. There is no rhyme rhythm or really any literary elements besides the usual ones theme and tone. The theme of “Does it mean I’m weak” is, it’s okay to let go even you just need to Kine the courage. The tone of this poem is encouraging. ”Who cares who’s watching, judging, pointing.” “You have that strength and courage.”

Cry, Give up Who cares who’s Watching, judging or Pointing. They don’t know, Know your story the pain, Why. It doesn’t mean your Weak it mean that you can Just let go, you have that Strength and courage, its doesn't mean you are weak. ~Katie Welsh

Face them Fear follows you in shadows, in your Mind. You know it’s there but cannot see it You can feel it, the sharp pain that blinds Its there and its hard like a punch or hit. You try facing it but there’s always more An endless path of them, some yet exist Some come to you, some come back from before Some hard to face some we check of the list The pain, love, things that scare us, we fear them You just need to find the strength and power, Strength to face fears, power to say I am Fear should not steer you in a road of length Don’t let fear win, face them, be strong, be proud You are free; stand up in a sitting crowd

The rhythm of this poem helps create a pass and a nice beat, but where rhythm is rhyme follows. It was hard to find something that rhymed and made sense but it just made the poem even more fun to write. Going back and reading through the poem after it was completed I noticed a couple of literary elements. The 4th line it’s hard like a punch or a hit was the first literary element, a simile. The 6th line and 6th word was where a parallelism came to my attention Some yet exist Some come to you, Some come back from before. The tone that I wanted this poem to be was unhappy kind of downing but then the last two lines I wanted it to be more of a consolation.

Halloween night where The creatures come out to play: Don’t let fear stop you.

The theme of this poem is about not being afraid of the unknown or the things we can’t understand. The tone started off as a negative outcome but turned into a positive message (not being afraid.) As a writer, I wanted this poem to be about-facing your fears. My season word also known as the kigo was perfect: Halloween. When I think of Halloween, I think of the scary costumes, having the courage to walk up to a stranger’s house and knock on their door. The semicolon is my kireji, the turning word. It helps the theme change from negative to positive.

A little girl once heard of a sport, She watched it and fell in love with it instantly. It became her life, something she lived for. She had something special, something not everyone else had... Passion. This passion defined her, it drove her to do her very best every single game, practice and dry land session. Her coaches told her they could teach her the skills, But that passion was something she had to teach herself. Passion is something In your heart. It’s an uncontrollable felling you get when you love something. They told her to never lose it. She hasn't. Now she is grown up and playing as high up in the mountains that she can, the top. She plays for her family, her friends, her teammates and her inner being. But every once in a while she remembers that little girl, and plays for her.

-Katie Welsh

Her Story Of Passion

My favorite line in this poem is line 9 “This passion defined her, it drove her to do her best. This was my favorite poem I have written because of its theme and tone. And because it is a huge part of who i am. The tone is inspiring, remembering that we all started form the bottom to get to where we are now. The theme is never forgetting where you started off. I wanted to try something other then a rhyming poem so I chose my free verse to do so. Even though there is no rhyme I find the poem catchy and have a little ring to it, a rhythm.

The fallen A day were we can Say hello and not goodbye To remember the ones The ones who have fallen Your loved ones Other loved ones Ones who serve Ones who care Ones who help These are the people We should never forget Our hero’s Our super man Don’t forget them. Katie Welsh

The tone of this is a little sad and mournful, not saying goodbye, remembering the ones who’ve fallen. I wanted people to read this and pick up the message of not forgetting the ones who have fallen. To help me I used a parallelism, line 7-‐9 Ones who serve Ones who care Ones who help. It helps get the message and I also use a literary element, hitting two birds with one stone. The message is a reason why I like this poem.

Found Poems and Analysis

Life is courage Courage to do something extraordinary, Courage to fight with diseases, Courage to make people stand on their own, Courage to believe in someone Courage to fight against odds Suruchi Puri

This poems theme is about courage, courage to do to fight to stand up to believe. Courage to do the things we don’t imagine doing. The tone is powerful deep and trying to send a message: to fight against diseases to fight against odds. We know of people that have fought, and if we are faced with these problems we need to find the courage to fight, to do. This message is a big reason why I love this poem. The parallelism is strong: courage to, it takes courage to do what you have been faced with or what others have been faced with. The author really went in depth with a few words to what you face but need courage to do it.

Word Fail Where words fail, Music speaks But the music is the knife And my heart is the sheet. Writing it It feels so wrong But make it loud, And make it long; A never ending Love song. Twisted as a Lie does grow, Beautiful as the life We know Through the truth does mingle Down below, Hidden from light It’ll never show. Shaye Chesney

This poem is strange but good. Strange because the author clearly meant to use rhymes but the way she used them was interesting. It took awhile to Higure out that it was an “ABABA” but as the tone changes the rhymes did too. An example of this is, “lie does grow, beautiful as the life we know.” People say that with rhyme comes rhythm, with this poem it was different, the Hirst half contained no rhyme but a good rhythm then where the rhymes came the rhythm got stronger. The tone of this is a positive on one line and a negative on the next. Just like “it feels so wrong but make it loud, make it long.” The beginning the author is talking about music being the knife and our hearts being the sheet. The picture I get when reading this is strong and passionate, a song leaving a scar on your heart. Music: it is not just words, its loud its long and its expressed and stays with you. This author nailed what music is in this poem.

Trust Trust is earned But once violated It’s difficult to regain When do you trust? Who do you trust? You trust with your mind You trust with your heart You trust with honor You trust with pride You trust with expectations But is putting trust in someone worth it? Tell me, is it? I’ve tried to trust But ended up with betrayal And cannot allow it to occur again I opened my mind Opened my heart But only received A shattered heart Now I know not to trust so easily Alisha Ricks

This poem does not have a rhythm to it. As a reader it would be more engaging if there were a catchy ring to it. The author could have created one by using literary elements like rhymes, repetition and or alliteration. The theme of this poem is about putting trust in someone and getting betrayed. The author did a really good job in connecting with the reader for me I really got a feel for her pain through her words. The tone of the poem was set to more of a sad and depressing emotion. The author clearly only has had bad outcomes when it comes to trust, witch is really sad and that’s why the tone is sad and depressing.

Freedom Freedom to give Freedom to live Freedom to question why Freedom to walk Freedom to talk Freedom to live or to die Freedom to sing Freedom to swing Freedom to just walk on by Freedom to speak Freedom to seek Freedom to laugh or to cry Freedom to work Freedom to shirk Freedom to spend or to buy Freedom to please Freedom to tease Freedom to smile or to sigh Freedom to be Freedom to see Freedom to aspire so high Freedom to touch Freedom to clutch Freedom to grant or deny Freedom that’s mine Freedom divine Freedom no money can buy Royston Allen

This poem is obviously about freedom; the parallelism, freedom to, gives it away… and maybe the title too. It’s a AAB, CCB, DDB rhyme scheme. it also has a rhythm in the poem itself, which gives the poem a nice catchy ring and makes it fun to read. The theme of this poem is that freedom is important to all people no matter what freedom is. The tone of this poem is to be able to have the freedom to do what you want and what you can. The author clearly showed multiple ways of what freedom is my favorite is the last one, freedom no money can buy. No one can buy freedom, its something we gain or something we are given.

Power To some power is guns To some power is knifes To some power is ability to read and write To some power is control To some power is a fist To some Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. power was words. To some power is like a trapped animal trying to get out of a cage To some power is love To some power is art To some power is money To come power is knowledge So what is power to you?

Edwina Matthews I love this poem for lots of reasons. The first one the author asks you as a reader, “what is power to you?” this doesn’t just make me think of what power is but helps me paint a picture of what I think power could be. To me power is living happy. Secondly because it makes a connection to real life and real people: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his thought on how power is words. I liked the simile the author uses, “power is like a trapped animal” it gives a more stronger meaning and paints a picture of the poor animals trying to escape. The author starts off the majority of sentences with, “To some power is.” This parallelism is a way for the author to bring in the theme: power is seen differently from others eyes. I think this because; there are lots of different points of belief on what power

My Name Passed down from my great-grams and lengthened by my parents. That is how I got my name. It just so happens to link us four, my family, together with the same letter: K. Kaitlyn Marie, pure bitter sea. When I hear the name Kaitlyn I feel like I have probably done something wrong like not cleaned my room when my parents asked me to. It just doesn’t describe who I am. Yes I have a dirty room but Kaitlyn, it’s boring, dull, like a blank canvas. If I could have the opportunity to change my name, I would. I would want it to stay close with my Mom’s: Kathleen. People say we look alike and have the same bubbly personalities, and others agree that essentially we are the same just different in age. I would also still like to keep my greatgrams name but its to short for my liking, Kate. It’s not exciting. But Katherine, that’s exciting and is a mystery; does she like being called Kate, Katie, Kathy or is it just Katherine? Katie, a nickname, most people use their names to describe them, for me I use something else. Kaitlyn, no, Katie is who I am. Kaitlyn remains unfamiliar. Kaitlyn is a stranger. Kaitlyn is hidden in the shadows. While Katie beams in the light. The crazy clown, fun, outgoing and bright. That’s me, Katie.

My cover page reads: Poem “noun a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song that is nearly always rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and often exhibits such formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure.” (mac apple dictionary) And in my anthology I included so. Bellow that it reads Identity “noun the fact of being who or what a person or thing is.” (mac apple dictionary) This comes in to play during this piece. Throughout this project I have been able to learn about myself through poetry. I had the opportunity to dig deeper into the things that touch my heart and shape who I am. Like the things I’m most passionate about. That is why I Wrote “Her Story of Passion.” Ringette is a big role in my life, I have been playing it for 10 years and 3 months so far. It taken up most of my time and can be very stressful. What helps me through that stress is putting my headphones in and listening to some music. Music is a big part of my life, though I can’t sing or play any interments. I enjoy listening to others that’s why I chose “Words Fail” by Shaye Chesney “Where words fail Music speaks” (line 1,2 Shaye Chesney) It’s true things are so much easier in song, and often, the music speak the words you want to hear. The other part of my identity displayed through this anthology was about the challenges that not just myself but also others go through. You may be wondering how do others challenges effect who I am. Well I’m that kind of person who loves to help people and think equality is something we should all be able to have. This is why I chose the poem “Freedom” by Royston Allen. In the poem Allen writes “Freedom to walk Freedom to talk” (line 4,5 Royston Allen) and that relates to exactly what I feel about equality. I found another poem that ties well with the poem “Freedom” its called “Power” Edwina Mathews “To some power is guns To some power is knifes” This is all about power of control, you have the guns, the knifes, the control and a lot of freedom is taken away when one is in power. Some more personally challenge that I face on a daily basis would be putting my trust into others, Fear, trying to hold back my emotions and saying goodbye. “Trust” by Alisha Ricks This relates to be because its hard to put trust in people when I have had people walk in and out of my life constantly. “The Fallen” written by me, Is a poem about soldiers. I have had a lot of family members Kight for my country and I’m so proud I just wish, “A day where we can say hello and not goodbye” (Line 1,2 Katie Welsh). “Fear” and “Face Them” two poems I wrote myself on facing your fears and not letting them control the things you do in your life. For me I’m a really fearful person but I never let the things I fear stop me

from doing the things that I want to I Kind the courage to face them. That’s why I decided to included a poem “Life is Courage.” I don’t just need courage to face my fears I need courage to face the life that’s ahead of me. Even the hard times and that’s why I wrote, “Does it mean I’m weak” these two poems Kit each other like a glove, “Just let go, you have that strength and courage. Its doesn't mean you are weak.” (Line 9,12 Katie Welsh) Letting go, you have to have courage and courage doesn’t mean your weak.
