Paige's Poetry Anthology

I would never change my name. It’s mine. Paige, neither common nor unusual. Paige, which, looks like the first butterfly of spring, highlighting elegance and simplicity. Paige, which sounds like the soft hymn of a waterfall. Paige means young assistant in French, however, I am not of that origin. I don’t think this meaning represents me. This meaning, it is not me. My identity, that’s me. My name is simply an appellation, a title. Our names do not define us. Our names will never outweigh our identities. Our names belong in the shade, while our identities will flicker in the sunlight. We remember people for who they are, names gradually slip into the darkness beyond because “First you forget the names, then you forget the faces” George Burns.

Just Think! BY ROBERT W. SERVICE

Just think! some night the stars will gleam Upon a cold, grey stone,

And trace a name with silver beam, And lo! ’twill be your own.

That night is speeding on to greet Your epitaphic rhyme.

Your life is but a little beat Within the heart of Time. A little gain, a little pain,

A laugh, lest you may moan; A little blame, a little fame, A star-gleam on a stone.

This poem maintains a good rhythm with a syllable pattern of 8-6-8-6 in each stanza and an a-b-a-b rhyming scheme. This was a beneficial technique used by Robert Service to keep a steady tempo and captivate the reader. In the second stanza Service said “That night is speeding on to greet” . The main word in this is speeding. He hints at the idea that time is not waiting for you. That is why I think the theme is Life is short; live it to the fullest. “A little gain, a little pain, A laugh, lest you may moan; A little blame, a little fame, A star-gleam on a stone.” (Stanza 3, Robert W. Service) In the last stanza Service used parallelism effectively. Authors want to captivate readers in their work. and by creating rhythm they can. In this poem Service has managed to do so. Parallelism increased the poem’s meaning because simplicity is similar to a little. What I mean was if he had used different wording in the last stanza it would have been more complicated. If that was so, the idea of a little bit of something would have been lost. I believe this poem has multiple tones, both positive and negative. It depends on the reader. If the reader believes he or she has fulfilled life or is fulfilling it then they might view this poem in a positive manor. However, if the reader believes he or she is not yet ready to face death than they may view this poem in a negative manor.

An Interest in Time Paige Miller

Time Walks, Time Runs, Eventually it will pass Tick, Tick, Tick It approaches Are you done with life Forget time Let it chase you Don’t waste time Not by dreading its embrace Enjoy time So you are ready The theme of this poem is make opportunities, don’t wait for them. I used repetition in this poem to emphasize the fact that time is always approaching by saying “Tick, tick, tick” (Line 4, Paige Miller). By doing so the theme was clearer to the audience. I think this poem has a happy tone. This is because its supposed to give the audience members inspiration to enjoy life as much as possible.

A Sense of Joy By Paige Miller

Soccer, to you, may only be a sport, Only a surge of pure profanity But to me, it’s family, it’s support It’s a vacation from insanity Soccer, the adrenaline in your veins Friends around you, who will not go away A love of a game, that always remains A sense of joy, tomorrow and today Every little thing’s gonna be alright Because soccer, is much more than a game It’s where you can forget your contrite It’s where you can express more than your name There is something, something for everyone, Friendships that will never be undone

In this sonnet I have tried to express a happy tone. I choose words that can be associated with happiness such as love, friends, and family. I think the rhyming was also beneficial because in my opinion rhymes are normally related to cheery things and it created a rhythm. The theme of this piece is happiness is found in different shapes and forms. By including a happy tone I could further convey the meaning of this piece. Something else that I included was an allusion. I did this in the first line of the third stanza when I said, “Every little thing gonna be alright” This is an allusion to Bob Marley’s song Three little birds. I thought it would be beneficial to include this because it would also convey that happy tone.

Beauty is more than appearance Beauty is love The graceful wings of a dove The endless imagination in a dream Beauty is not always something that can be seen Beauty is laughter And the remembrance after Beauty is hope When you have no reason to Beauty is he and she and me and you Beauty is forgiving No matter how hard

The theme of this poem is, Beauty is viewed differently by different individuals. There were a lot of metaphors in this piece. Each one supports the theme. Keelyn says that beauty is multiple things but also different to other people. By making this a metaphor she doesn’t have to explain the similarity she is comparing like she would, had she made them similes instead. This poem had rhyme but did not maintain a pattern. I wish she had made it clearer that she was trying to rhyme. She should have had better word choice rather than settling for near-rhymes. It would have created a more steady rhythm and a better poem altogether. I believe this has a hopeful tone. This is because it gives hope to the people that struggle with accepting their appearance. Someone who felt like that may have their spirits picked up by reading this.

Beauty is kindness Making the best of a mess Beauty is tears And overcoming your fears Beauty is individuality The courage to be yourself Beauty is a book, sitting on a shelf To deďŹ ne beauty, An impossible task Because truly, Does anyone really know, I ask Beauty is dierent to me Than to you I wonder if anyone ever knew

Beauty Is a Million Colors By Sareeah Keelyn

Today you are YOU! That is truer than TRUE! There is no one alive That is you-er Than YOU!

Happy Birthday to YOU! Dr. Suess

I think the author purposely made the lines short. This technique welcomes larger audiences to the poem because readers that are easily intimidated by long literary pieces are more likely to consider reading this. Another thing that readers will appreciate is the fact that the author uses uncomplicated wording. With no pattern the rhyme still manages to maintain the reader’s attention. Dr. Suess commonly uses rhymes in his work, this is a good method of appealing to the audience and making it more memorable. If able to remember the poem, viewers can easily reflect on the true meaning. The theme is, everyone can bring something different to the table. Dr. Suess has conveyed this universal truth well by saying it quite directly.

When it Rains Paige Miller

When it rains Get out thy wellies

-Cheery Tone -Theme, Make the best of what you’ve got -Rhythm, rhyme

Get thy clothes wet and smelly

! This poem had an a-b-a-b rhyming scheme. This was beneficial because it created a steady but enjoyable rhythm. This makes the audience want to continue reading. ! Im my opinion rhymes are fun which is why I think it added to the cheery tone. Both the tone and the rhymes enhanced the theme, which is make the best of what you’ve got.

Don’t carry complains

When it shines Don’t turn to an ole air cooler Have good times

Make negatives fewer

When wind blows you down Laugh

Like you’ve seen a happy, frowning clown

Live life on your own behalf

! Rhymes can be really fun thats why I think this poem has a cheery tone. This poem has an a-b-a-b rhyming scheme. It was beneficial because it created a steady but enjoyable rhythm. This technique makes the audience want to continue reading. ! By having that playful tone it enhanced the theme of the poem, which is make the best of what you’ve got.

Robert W. Service used an a-b-a-b-c-d-c-d rhyming scheme. The rhythm welcomed the reader to the poem through rhyme. This technique was beneficial to the meaning of the poem because it caused the audience to read the whole piece. Therefore, he could convey the entire meaning. “Alas! I’m not prepared to do A goddam thing about it.” I was a little bit startled by the end of this poem, however, I think it communicated a deeper meaning. A world in which everyone is equal, is not easy to accomplish is the theme. People believe in the idea, but rely on others to fulfill it. I think this is the truth he was trying to impart. Hope is the tone because it gives you an inspiring idea. However, there is an undertone of sadness, for we are not yet in the perfect world and that dream is not yet close to our grasp.

I Believe BY ROBERT W. SERVICE

It’s my belief that every man Should do his share of work, And in our economic plan No citizen should shirk. That in return each one should get His meed of fold and food, And feel that all his toil and sweat Is for the common good. It’s my belief that every chap Should have an equal start, And there should be no handicap To hinder his depart; That there be fairness in the fight, And justice in the race, And every lad should have the right To win his proper place. It’s my belief that people should Be neither rich nor poor; That none should suffer servitude, And all should be secure. That wealth is loot, and rank is rot, And foul is class and clan; That to succeed a man may not Exploit his brother man. It’s my belief that heritage And usury are wrong; That each should win a worthy wage And sing an honest song .... Not one like this — for though I rue The wrong of life, I flout it. Alas! I’m not prepared to do A goddam thing about it.

We Have a Heart Paige Miler

The theme of this piece is you can make the world better. This concrete poem is written in the form of a first. This format better conveyed the

theme by using symbolism. A fist conveys the idea of strength and defiance. In this case, when I say defiance I mean in a good way. Such as defiance against what is wrong. " I used parallelism in the first 6 lines of my piece. I thought this method was beneficial to the poem because I wanted it to stick with the reader. We have… We have… We have… means nothing. Since those words have little significance, by repeating them words the poem’s meaning is enhanced because it attracts the audiences attention towards the words with real meaning.

With Purpose Paige Miller As a haiku, this poem contains a kigo and a kiriji. The kigo in this piece is spring. The kiriji is the comma after purpose. In this poem I have used a simile. This simile links trees to people and sets the topic of this piece. However, I only wanted to highlight the shared similarities in appearance. Obviously, not saying that people are green, but hinting at the fact each being is similar to another but different. This leads me to the theme of this piece, which is, we are made different to be different. What I am trying to communicate is that everything has a purpose in life, however, it may not be the same as another’s. This poem is very monotone. I feel like the message I was trying to convey was as well. Which served a dilemma, how do I engage the audience? Because what I was talking about above, at least to me, doesn’t attach itself to an emotion. I wish I could have included a fitting rhyme into the poem. My only issue was with limited space, I couldn’t include everything I wanted to.

Trees are like people, Built strong, or tall, with purpose, Spring, season to heal

I want a better world, for nature and society. If we continue our ways, earth may die before we are ready. “Lets take good care, Of that beautiful world” (Lines 1&2, Aldo Craas) When I created this anthology, I selected poems that would display the same idea. For example, I really connected to I Believe by Robert W. Service. At Girst I thought I didn’t like the ending, but then I realized it just startled me, “Alas! I’m not prepared to do A goddam thing about it..” (Line 31, 32, Robert W. Service) I still chose to add it because it reGlected truth, it told the unwanted truth. It really made me think, is this me? Do I dream of a better day but expect someone else to carry me there? “We have legs, so use them to stand up for what is right” (Line 7 and 8, Paige Miller) I should use my own feet, my own feet. We can all stand up for what is right. No matter who we are, we can all Gight for a cause. We are all different for a reason. Some of us may be “built strong, or tall, with purpose” If we were the same, what would be the point? Life would be boring. No surprises, neither happy nor sad. “Let time chase you. Don’t dread it’s embrace” (Line 7 and 8, Paige Miller), “Your life is but a little beat. Within the heart of Time.” (Line 8 and 9, Robert W. Service) Life is short, so I want to enjoy it. I want to enjoy the little things, like the white Glowers on my favorite tree or the sun making the sky dance and the mountains glow. So I try to remember, “When wind blows you down. Laugh.” (Line 9 and 10, Paige Miller) That way I will be happy. But when I’m down I like to do that one thing. That one thing that makes me happy, for me, that’s soccer, because “Soccer, to you, may only be a sport. Only a surge of pure profanity. But to me, it’s family, it’s support.” (Lines 1-‐3, Paige Miller). My team supports me for me, accepts me, and that is important because it’s important to be yourself. “Today you are YOU! That is truer that TRUE!” (Lines 1 and 2, Dr. Suess). Another one poem I think is interesting was Beauty is a Million Colours by Sareeah Keelyn. It showed that beauty can be so many things. Like when it said, “Beauty is laughter. And the remembrance after” (Line 6 and 7 Sareeah Keelyn). It reminded me that I can be happy with who I am. I can set my standard of beautiful and I can be happy with it. So I will be.
