「至此，語言的失能被歸結為一種聽覺徵候：『口吃』，

就像機器的完善功能被以一種音樂性存在來顯示：即『簌聲』。 簌聲就是順利運行中的雜音（……） 簌聲就是雜音蒸發時所發出的聲響：

大卷伸嗣的雕塑作品總是雕塑傳統的一則反命題，像是將台座或量體壓成極淺的浮雕， 將量感都壓縮在紋理的質地上，甚至像是花瓣的量感、修正液的粉質感和從鏤刻拉出的 線條，或是大量使用透明與半透明的材質，製造出僅剩細微溫度的疊層和從黑影裂縫渙 散出的光，讓各種可能的銘刻回歸到時間的逝去與不可感知的痕跡。就像是說：他的創 作切入到雕塑的手勢，即是令雕塑「口吃」。會不會體感與量感一直都是人們對於存在 的幻見？會不會我們長久以來總是用不透明、厚實的質地來阻擋光、讓我們以為唯有形 式與質量才能帶有「靈光」？他對於這些問題的回應並不是辯證地「否定」這些命題， 而是盡其可能地「稀釋」幻見、甚至「粉化」幻見的劇場空間，因為唯有「稀釋」才會 出現空の間、光の隙，讓空氣能夠穿透、讓光線能夠散落，存在才得以呼吸、才得以意識， 存在才能獲得塑形。 所以，從他一些作品來看，如《臨界之氣－時空》、《迴響：水晶計畫》、《重力與恩 寵》，甚至是他的大多數作品，「層」是大卷創作中非常核心的視覺要素，「層」是量 體命題的一種基進蛻變（radical metamorphosis），但絕對不同於順沿「理念」而將 量體分解為點、線、面；也不同於自前衛派到普普、再到媒體與信息中所不斷被強化的「觀 念」。「層」與「面」是完全不同的造形和塑形，因為「面」是一種概念化後的象徵空 《臨界之氣－時空》 2015 森美術館

間，而「層」卻是倖存的空間，讓空氣、光、水汽、微粒得以川流過的生命空間。因此， 我們可以說大卷的「層」雕塑是聽覺式的，而聲音是從那得以倖存之「層」所發出的「存 在」之聲。而這「存在之聲」因為「層」而能夠被藝術家引導到一個生態網絡，因此，「網 絡」或說交織的「肌理」總是這些「層」的表情。 他對「存在」的思考不是重力與反重力之間的不斷纏鬥，不似「勞孔群像」（Laocoon cum filiis）所迸發出抗拒的力度和時間的韌性，意即情感迸裂與神性的上升；也不是以 控制、玩弄物質和身體所承擔的重力，來呈現現代性指向絕對超越的崇高感，相反地， 是讓存在能夠「倖存」。大卷伸嗣面對雕塑的固有命題，所思考的「存在」首先是「倖 存」，因為「倖存」的命題就是以環境（即生態觀點）思考生命如何可能的提問，這就 是為何他的作品會被界定為環境雕塑或物件塑形的問題，然而，實質上，他的創作一直 都在面對「人」（如 101 展間裡大卷學生時代的《肖像》），不是人的型態，而是人的 存在（倖存）與讓這倖存成為可能的世界——空氣與光——當人真正置身這樣的世界時， 才會有風、然後有聲。

「層」的表情在大卷的作品中，就是住友文彥在〈感知生命之未可知〉（2018）中即提 到，在觀看他作品的「構築表層」時所出現的「令我開始思考文字的演變」，換言之， 在「層」的生命空間感之外，存在一種「詩」的構築，彷如宇宙觀的記錄與表現，特別 是「漂浮」系列——每一片方塊或立方磚上的刻痕，既像是「肌理」，也像地形圖、紋樣、 植物纖維等混合圖樣。 在這次展覽中的作品《漂浮》（103 展間）便以「天」和「地」的梭狀物所構成的機械 裝置，與一片大尺度佈滿圖樣的圓型層構成一種宇宙論的關係模型，這模型彷彿是種「沒 有接觸」或「幾乎觸及」的書寫機器，如果該系列的緣起來自風在雪地上寫出波紋狀的 痕跡，那麼記錄在圓形層上的則是文化的最初紀錄，那種幾近象形文字的混合圖樣群， 就像住友文彥將這樣的書寫回溯到最初農業時期對於穀物與風景的書寫，也是港千尋在 〈一百億光年之瓶：大卷伸嗣所開拓的知覺風景〉（2018）中以「一齣可以直達宇宙的

影子戲」賦予他作品（《重力與恩寵》）某種考古學式的美學評價。我們會想到那些劃 過雪地的「風」，在藝術家的心裡所劃出的是一種貫穿時光的「繩紋」地圖。

大卷的雕塑創作對於生命的關注如此深刻，氣候與文化在他的「無垠」系列與「漂浮－ 構築之詩」系列中可虛構出一種倖存狀態下的「重新書寫」，從材料（materiality）、 圖樣（pattern）、集制（assemblage）、造形（plasticization）、裝置（installation） 到設光（lighting design）都連繫著藝術家對於生命的想像，「層」的創作集中在「處理」 與「延伸」：「處理」主要是材料選取、圖樣的採集與設計；而「延伸」則是圖樣的集制、 裝置狀態與光塑情境。就相當於自然生成過程中需要的「作用」與「繁殖」——一種交 織著氣候（呼吸）、地形（肌理）、植物（花與樹紋）和宇宙（光）的生命想像。並將「書 寫」回返到這生命想像的生成時刻，即「書寫」和「述說」尚未分離的時刻。 風（簌聲）在物質上留下痕跡：書寫。如巴特所言「語之簌形成一種烏托邦（……）， 意義的音樂烏托邦；在那國度裡，語言可以被放大，我甚至會說被去自然化到形成一片

大卷有著比羅蘭．巴特更為完善的視野，因為他的雕塑構築出具有生態學面向的「層」。 當巴特以「歡愉」（薩德的性愛機器與日本的柏青哥）對於「簌聲」的界定：「複數性刪除： 複數但絕非巨大」，相對地，以「層」的表情來看，大卷的作品與計畫更充分表達出「複 數性刪除」，刪除的正是各種以重力和質量來確定的「實存」，而複數便是被涵括、蔓 延在「層」的表面、帶有生物或植物痕跡的「複數」。因此，「層」內總是含納著一個 有機生態系，大卷的作品構成往往指向帶有生命延續發展的想像，一如花瓣、紋理等。 換言之，他所處理的塑形面對的是觀者的想像，這裡的想像關乎「生命發展」，也就是 將「有機」的想像「感性化」，「刪除」倚賴身體的空間感，而進行細微的聚集與散置， 讓即將消逝又彷彿滯留的複數痕跡在「簌聲」中會面：「迴響」。在 104 展間，他為台 灣製作了《迴響 水晶計畫－福爾摩沙》，在作品形式上，將「漂浮」與「迴響」這兩個 系列的形誌做了連結，甚至應該說，「交融」。如果將大卷的作品視為一種生態性雕塑， 那麼，他不斷挑戰雕塑傳統的方式同時表現在物質、能量與形式之間的轉化，並在這轉 化中鋪展出「層」的空間；也因此，筆者才會下了「風の光」的標題，因為「の」就像 是一個「閾」（臨界）的時刻，一種話語中的「層」，彷彿說道穿過葉叢的風所帶出的 聲音，能夠成為大卷期待我們看到的「內在」之光。

A Liminal Space between Light and Wind: The Initial Writing of Survivors —— The Rustle of Language

Now, just as the dysfunctions of language are in a sense summarized in an auditory sign, stammering, similarly the good functioning of the machine is displayed in a musical being: the rustle.

The rustle is the noise of what is working well [...] to rustle is to make audible the very evaporation of the noise: the tenuous, the blurred, the tremulous are received as the signs of an auditory annulation.

Roland Barthes, The Rustle of Language. pp.76-77 Shinji Ohmaki's sculptures always advance propositions, such as the extreme compression of pedestals or volumes until they are no more than relief, that are antithetical to the proposition of traditional sculpture. Volumes in his sculptures are like textures—as thin as flower petals, the powdery substance left by dried correction fluid, or lines engraved on a surface. Many of his works are composed of layered transparent or translucent materials that permit only the most subtle warmth and diffuse light to escape from shadowy crevasses, making his various possible inscriptions recede with time into unknowable traces. It is as if his work penetrates what traditional sculpture declares and makes it stammer. Has the sensation of volume been a hallucination all along? Must we always block light with heavy and opaque materials to insist that only form and texture can be vehicles of what Benjamin called aura? Ohmaki does not merely affirm or deny these propositions, but rather, to the greatest extent possible, diminishes the hallucination, even reducing it to powder in a theatrical space. This is because only by diminishing can openings and illuminated gaps appear, and these allow air to penetrate and light to spread, such that existence can breathe, be conscious, and take shape.

From some (or even most) of his artworks, such as Liminal Air Space-Time, Echoes – Crystallization, and Gravity and Grace, it appears that layers are an extremely important visual element for Ohmaki. The layer is a radical departure from the proposition of volume (a layer is a radically transformed volume), but here, absolutely does not follow the idea that a volume can be broken down into points, lines, and planes. Nor does it follow the lineage from avant-garde schools of the early 20th to Pop Art, or have anything to do with current trends, where artists seek different concepts in the media or its messages. Layer and plane are completely different formations: a plane is a conceptualized symbolic space, while layer is a space of survival—a space for living because it allows air, light, water vapor, and particles to flow through. It therefore can be said that Ohmaki's layer sculptures are auditory, and their sound is that sound of existence coming from the layer of survival. Because of layers, the sound of existence is guided into an ecological network by the artist, and therefore this network, which is suggested by the interwoven texture he draws on the surface, is the expression of these layers.

Ohmaki does not think about existence as a constant struggle between gravity and antigravity, and his work is not like the statue Laocoön and His Sons, exploding with dynamic force and the tenacity of time to suggest rushing emotions and divine ascendance. Nor does he rely on modernity's sublimity of absolute transcendence by controlling or playing with the gravity borne by a body. Instead, Ohmaki allows existence to survive. His inherent proposition regarding sculpture is to consider existence as survival, which is the idea that life becomes possible based on the ecological conditions present in an environment. This is why his artwork can be defined as environmental sculpture or considered as objects taking shape. In actuality his work has always addressed humanity, as evidenced by Portrait—a work from his student days and on display in Gallery 101. However, he does not address humanity through the human figure, but rather through human existence (survival), and a world that allows this survival, a world of air and light. Only when occupying this world can we hear the wind and then sound.

What layer expresses in Ohmaki's work is what Fumihiko Sumitomo wrote in his 2018 article Perceiving Unpredictable Nature, “If you trace the surface of Flotage – Tectonics with your eyes, the movement of its countless fibrous lines will stimulate thoughts of the historical transitions of characters within you.” In other words, in addition to its sense of space for life, the layer has a poetic construction, just like a notation of a worldview, especially his Flotage series, in which every scratch inscribed on acrylic panels or bricks looks like texture, a topographic map, patterns, or plant fibers all mixed together.

In Flotage, his installation in Gallery 103 of this exhibition, Ohmaki makes use of two spindle-shaped mechanisms suspended over a large circular layer of patterns on the floor, thus forming a cosmological relationship between heaven and Earth.

These mechanisms also suggest writing machines but do not make contact with the layer on the floor. If the work is inspired by the wind writing ripple-like traces across the snow, then what is written on the circular layer is the earliest recording of culture. The mixed patterns on the layer are almost like hieroglyphs, and as Fumihiko Sumitomo wrote, they are reminiscent of writing about grain and the landscape during humanity's initial agricultural era. Chihiro Minato, in The 10 Billion Light-Year

Jar: The Perception of Scenery Created by Shinji Ohmaki, an archaeological-based critique of Ohmaki's work Gravity and Grace, wrote, “[…] drama is played out in a shadow play at the cosmic range.” We can all imagine that the wind traversing the snow is drawing a Jōmon map traversing time across the artist's heart.

The care for life in Ohmaki's sculpture is really this deep. In his two series Abyss and Flotage—Tectonics, perhaps climate and culture come together in a kind of survival rewriting that connects materiality, pattern, assemblage, plasticity, installation, and lighting to the artist's imagination of life. His work involving layers is focused on process and extension, where process refers to selection of materials, and designing and gathering patterns; and extension is the assemblage of patterns, state of the installation, and lighting. This is equivalent to the action and reproduction that are required for the generation of life, which is an imagination of life woven from climate (breathing), terrain (texture), plants (flowers and tree patterns) and the universe (light). Writing is returned to the moment the imagination of life is born, that is, the time when writing and narration are not yet separated.

The traces that remain on material from wind (rustling) is writing. As Barthes wrote, “[…] the rustle of language forms a utopia. Which utopia? That of a music of meaning; in its utopic state, language would be enlarged, I should even say denatured to the point of forming a vast auditory fabric in which the semantic apparatus would be made unreal.” Ohmaki's Liminal Air Space-Time in this exhibition (Gallery 102) seems to closely echo Barthes' utopic rustling, which is a subtle, numerous, and trembling extension of life in the dark.

Ohmaki's vision is more comprehensive than Barthes' because his sculptures construct ecologically oriented layers. While Barthes connects rustling to pleasure with Marquis de Sade's erotic machine or Japan’s pachinko, “[…] the rustle is the very sound of plural delectation—plural but never massive,” Ohmaki fully expresses plural delectation with his layers and eliminates the various existences determined by gravity and mass. The plural is what is included and spreads on the surface of the layer and bears the traces of organisms or plants. Therefore, his layers always contain an organic ecosystem, and the compositions of his works often point to his imagination of the continued development of life with petals and textures.

In other words, the forms he deals with address the viewer's imagination. The imagination here is about the development of life, that is, turning organic imagination into perceptions, and eliminating reliance on the body's sense of space in favor of subtle gathering and dispersal by letting the plurality of traces that are about to vanish yet linger reverberate in the rustling form. He created Echoes Crystallization— Formosa onsite in Gallery 104 specifically for Taiwan. He linked, or blended, his two series Flotage and Echoes in the form of this work. If Ohmaki's work is regarded as ecological sculpture, then he has consistently challenged the sculpture tradition while expressing transformations between material, energy and form, and in these transformations, has paved space with layers. For this article, I have used “A Liminal Space between Light and Wind” ( 風の光 ) in the title because it suggests an organic threshold or a layer in language. By alluding to the rustling sound of wind passing through the leaves, this exhibition may reveal the inner light that Ohmaki expects us to see.

大巻伸嗣の彫刻作品は、総じて、彫刻の伝統に対するアンチテーゼであると言える。台 座やマッスに圧を加えたかのような極めて薄いレリーフや、量感を圧縮したように地面

に広がる文様。花びらの量感や乾いた修正液の粉っぽさ、表面に施された線。作品に頻 繁に用いられる透明または半透明の素材は、かすかな温もりをたたえる層を作り、暗い 影の裂け目から漏れ出す光が、あらゆる彫刻的要素を、時間の流れと共に感知すること

の叶わない痕跡へと回帰させる。言い換えれば、大巻の作品は彫刻のしぐさに切り込み、 彫刻を「口ごもらせる」のだ。体感や量感とは、人が存在について抱いてきた幻想だっ たのか？ 私たちは長いあいだ、不透明で分厚い質感を持つものだけを頼りに光を遮っ てきたせいで、形や質量のあるものだけが「アウラ」を持ちうるのだと思い込んできた のではないか？大巻は、これらの命題を弁証的に否定しようとはしない。代わりに、可

能な限り「希釈」することで、幻想的な劇場空間を「風解」させようとする。なぜなら「希

釈」によってのみ、空間や光の隙が現れるからだ。空気が通り抜け、光が分散すること ではじめて、存在は呼吸し、意識を持ち始め、外形を獲得する。

ということでは決してない。また、前衛からポップアートの流れの中で、もしくはメデ ィアやメッセージにおいて絶えず強化されてきた「コンセプト」とも異なる。「層」と 「面」では、形も成り立ちも全く違う。「面」がある種の概念化された象徴空間である 一方、「層」は生存のための空間――つまり空気や光、水蒸気、微粒子がとめどなく流 れた痕跡を持つ、生命の空間である。したがって我々は大巻の「層」の彫刻を、聴覚的 と呼ぶことができよう。聴こえてくるのは、生存者たちの層が発する「存在の音」だ。 この音は「層」あるがゆえに、芸術家に導かれ、ひとつの生態ネットワークとなる。そ

して「ネットワーク」あるいはそこに織り込まれた「テクスチャー」は、これらの「層」 が見せる表情だと言えるのだ。

大巻は「存在」を、重力と反重力のあいだの絶え間なき戦いだと考えているわけではな い。みなぎる力と時間の強靭さにより、ほとばしる感情や神性の高まりを表すラオコー

ン群像とも似つかない。ましてや、物質や身体が引き受ける重力をコントロールし、弄 ぶことで、絶対的で超越的な崇高感を志向する近代性を表そうとしているのでもない。

それとは逆に、大巻は存在を「生き延びさせよう」とする。彼が彫刻固有の問題に向き 合いつつ思考する「存在」は、まず第一に、「生存」なのである。なぜなら「生存」と Gravity and Grace 2016 Aichi Triennial

いう命題は、環境、すなわち生態系の観点から考えたとき、生命はどのような可能性を 持つか、という問いであるからだ。彼の作品が環境彫刻や物体の塑造に言及する試みと

捉えられる所以はここにある。しかし実際には、（学生時代の作品《portrait》のように） 大巻の作品は常に「人」と向き合ってきた。人の姿かたちという意味ではない。人の存

在（生存）と、この生存を可能にさせている世界――空気や光――と、向き合ってきた。 そして人は、このような世界に真に身を置いたときに初めて、風が吹くのを感じ、音を 聞くことが出来るのだ。

大巻の作品における「層」の表現については、住友文彦が「予測できないものを感知す る」（2018）の中で触れており、「テクトニクスの表層を目で追っていると（中略）文

字をめぐる歴史的な変遷について考えることを刺激する」と述べている。言い換えると

「層」には、生命のための空間という感覚のほか、一種の詩の構築が存在する。それは、 宇宙観の記録と表現のようでもあり、「Flotage」シリーズがその好例だ。ひとつひと

つの四角いパネルやブロックの表面に刻まれた傷痕は「テクスチャー」のようであり、 地形図や文様、植物繊維などが混合したもののようでもある。

本展の展示作品《Flotage》は、「天」と「地」を思わせる構造を持つキネティック・

インスタレーションである。線で埋め尽くされた大きな円形の層が床にあり、その上に 吊るされた紡錘状のものと共に一種の宇宙論的関係を示しているが、それは同時に「触 れることのない」あるいは「触れそうで触れない」筆記装置を思い起こさせる。もしこ の作品が、積もった雪の上に風が描き出す波紋状の痕跡に由来するのだとしたら、円形

の層の上に記録されているのは文化の最初の記録であり、象形文字に似た様々な文様の

集まりだと言える。住友がここに書かれたもの（描かれたもの）を人類が農業を始めた

時代の穀物と風景についての記録と結びつけたように、港千尋も「100 億光年の壺：大 巻伸嗣が拓く風景の知覚」（2018）において、作品《重力と恩寵》が「宇宙的な射程を

もった影絵」のようだとして、ある種の考古学的な美的評価を与えている。雪の上を横

切る風は、時を超えて作家の心の中を吹き抜け、縄文地図を描いているのではないだろ うか――ふと、そんな風に思えてくる。

こ の よ う に 大 巻 の 彫 刻 作 品 は、 生 命 に つ い て の 深 い 関 心 に 根 ざ し て い る。 例 え ば 「Abyss」シリーズや「 Flotage: Tectonics 」シリーズでは、一種の生存状態を定義し 直す過程において、気候や文化が確かに重要な役割を果たし、素材、図案、アッサンブ ラージュ、造形、インスタレーション、照明デザインのすべてが、作家の生命にまつわ

る想像と結びつけられる。「層」を織りなす彼の創作は、「処置」と「拡張」というふ たつの要素に集約される。「処置」は主に素材の選択および図案の採集とデザインを指

す。一方「拡張」は、図案を組み立て、インスタレーションの状態や、光を用いた立体 的な情景を作り出すことを指す。これは自然の生成プロセスにおいて必要とされる「作

用」や「繁殖」に相当する。気候（呼吸）や地形（手触り）、植物（花や木の文様）、 宇宙（光）が入り混じった、生命についての想像である。それは「書き記すこと」を、 生命への想像が生まれたその時間へと押し戻す。「書くこと」と「語ること」が未分離 であった時間へと。

風（ざわめき）は、物質の上に痕跡を残す――または書き記す。例えばロラン・バルト

はこう述べている。「言語のざわめきとは、一つのユートピアなのである。（中略）意 味の音楽というユートピアである。（中略）ユートピアの状態においては、言語は拡大

思われる。細やかに、大量に、小刻みに震えながら暗闇の中で広がっていく生命の表現 だ。

大巻はバルトに比べて、より包括的なヴィジョンを携えている。なぜなら、彼の彫刻は 生態系を成す「層」を構築するからである。バルトは「快楽」（マルキ・ド・サドのエ

ロティックな機械や日本のパチンコ）を例に挙げながら、「ざわめき」が示す境界であ るところの、「複数的な――しかし決して集団的ではない」音の消滅について論じてい

る。それに対し大巻の作品やプロジェクトは、「層」の表現を通じて「複数的な消滅」

までも余すところなく実現している。ここで消滅するものとはまさに、重力や質量によ って確定される「実存」である。ここで言う「複数」とは、「層」に内包され、その表

面に広がり、生物や植物の痕跡を含有するものの複数性を指す。そのため「層」には常 に有機的な生態系があり、作品は総じて、花弁や木目など、生命の連続的発展を想像さ せるもので構成されている。

言い換えると、大巻の立体作品が対峙するのは、鑑賞者の想像力だ。この想像力は、「生 命の発展」についてのものであり、「有機的」想像を「感性化」し、身体的な空間感覚 への依存を「消滅」させ、細やかな集まりと広がりを発生させる。そして、消えそうに

なりながらも留まる複数の痕跡が「ざわめき」の中で「こだま」する。今回、大巻が台

湾での展示のために特別に制作した《Echoes Crystallization - Formosa》は、様式的に

は、「Flotage」と「Echoes」の両シリーズの形態や記号が結びつけられ、融合してい るように感じられる。大巻の作品を一種の生態的彫刻とみるならば、彼は彫刻の伝統に 絶え間なく挑戦しつつ、同時に物質とエネルギーと形式のあいだに起こる変容を表現し

てきた。そしてこの変容の中で作家は、「層」の空間を四方へ拡張している。そのため、 筆者はこのテキストに「風の光」というタイトルを付けた。なぜなら、助詞の「の」は、 ひとつの「閾」（臨界）状態を表すものであり、言葉の「層」とも言えるからである。 木の葉や草むらのあいだを吹き抜ける風音を標題に響かせることで、大巻が私たちに見 て欲しいと願う「内なる光」を表せればと考えた。

日語中的 「閾（ iki ）」 意指內外之間的邊界，但並非絕對二分隔開兩個世界，而是允 許雙邊低限交往與交融的 「多孔邊界」。《臨界之氣》（ Liminal air ）是舞蹈術語「 Liminal

body 」的倒置轉化，術語原意是藉由身體動作表達情感。如果舞者的行為是傳達身體

的內在感覺，《臨界之氣》正好相反，它壓縮流洩時間的協和與漸變、空氣的振動，然 後把它們融入雕塑與空間之中。透過可視化無形的內在狀態與連接四散的外在線索， 藝術家試著感知展現於我們周遭的「被遺忘輪廓」。

In Japanese, the character “iki” refers to the boundary between the inner and outside realm.

These two realms aren’t mutually exclusive, and the boundary allows, to a minimal degree, the exchange and blending of elements from both sides. The title of the work “Liminal Air” is a reinterpretation of a “Liminal Body”, a term in dancing which means expressing emotions through bodily movements. If the dancers express their inner feelings through physical motions, “Liminal Air” refers to an opposite process in which the gradual passing of time and the subtle vibrations in the air are compressed and incorporated into the creation of a sculpture and space. By presenting a shapeless inner realm and sprawling outer contour, the artist attempts to present traces of the “forgotten contours” that are all around us.

「如果『出現在某處』是存在的核心意義，那麼我們會一直對這個萬物轉瞬即逝的世界 感到迷惑。」對於大卷伸嗣來說，他對「存在」的質疑來自於一次對他自己和這個星球 造成了巨大衝擊的事故。本來以自身的才能和意識在一方土壤上找到了自己的位置和領 域，卻突然間遭到了一次人為事故的衝擊。在這次可能瞬間瓦解整個生態系統的災難面 前，人類本來優越的地位蕩然無存，而這次災難又是人類自以為傲的智慧催生的。 對於大卷來說，生活在世上帶給人一種虛假的安全感，也容易造成人類文明可以凌駕於 自然力之上的假象，而這就是「存在的細語」這件作品的思想根基。作品喚起了大卷思 緒中那種搖搖欲墜的生存狀態，飽受折磨而又充滿靈感。曾幾何時，人們本能地認為生 存是一種慣性的常態，一種與生俱來的自然權利。但是在巨大的浩劫 ( 例如 2011 年日 本福島的地震與核災 ) 來臨之際，生存變得異常脆弱，不堪一擊。當人類的狂妄自大與 無比可觀的損失和傷痛形成了鮮明對比時，大卷提出了如下的問題：「物質與精神、自 我與他人之間的界限在哪裡？我們應該如何捕捉和理解它的存在？我是誰？生而為人的 意義何在？」在物質與精神之間存在於一個聲音，在詢問著關於人類的問題。 「界限」是大卷作品的美學核心，他在界限上找到了讓他心神不寧的緊張的能量。巧合 的是法國哲學家羅蘭巴特也用「細語」一詞來形容語言的雙重作用：即代表規則，也可 以形容情境；語言有既定的含義，但在交流過程中又不斷地被詮釋，這就是現代性的本 質。巴特在他 1975 年的散文《語之簌》中寫到：「簌聲就是順利運行中的雜音，而由 此引出了一個悖論：簌聲代表了一種臨界的噪音，一種不可能發出的噪音，一種在完美 運轉的事物中不可能出現的噪音。簌聲就是雜音蒸發時所發出的聲響：微弱、模糊、顫 抖都被當作某種『有聲式取消』的徵候。」如果大卷思考的是「界限」的狀態，那麼巴 特則是在玩味結構的抽象意義，背景含義的轟鳴以及這種聲音的細節。巴特所說的「簌

The World Murmurs Patrick Flores

“If ‘being’ there is what it means to exist, then we will remain confused by this world in which everything disappears in the blink of an eye.” For Shinji Ohmaki, the doubt of existence is inflicted by a traumatic event that alters both the person and the planet. The assurance of having found a place in the world and standing on a territory in the fullness of talent and consciousness may have blindsided the human agent, rendering this privileged agency oblivious or even indifferent to the imminent catastrophe engulfing the entire ecology, a catastrophe partly authored by this all too confident intelligence.

For Ohmaki, being in the world offers some kind of a false security; it also tends to cultivate the conceit of human mastery over nature. This is the basis of the “rustle” that evokes the precarious condition of existence in Ohmaki’s troubled but also inspired mind. Where before existence may have been intuited as a constant and a given, some kind of a birthright or an ostinato that is the sign of the normal, in the face of exceptional decimation like the one caused by the great earthquake and the ensuing nuclear disaster in Fukushima in Japan in 2011, existence proves to be so delicate and flimsy. In light of such disproportion between human hubris and the specter, and spectacle, of loss, Ohmaki asks: “Where is the boundary between what is substantial and spiritual, and the self and others? How is one supposed to go about recognizing and pursuing such boundaries? Who am I? What does it mean to be human?" Between substance and spirit is the voice, or the sound, that asks about the human.

The idea of the “boundary” is fundamental in the aesthetic of Ohmaki’s art. It is in the boundary where he locates the energy of the tension that perturbs his well-being. It is uncanny that the French philosopher Roland Barthes also turns to the word “rustle”

to describe the work of language both as a convention and a situation, instilled and yet always translated in the acts and gestures of speaking with others; this is the nature itself of modernity. Barthes remarks in the beautiful essay “The Rustle of Language” written in 1975 that “the rustle is the noise of what is working well. From which follows this paradox: the rustle denotes a limit-noise, an impossible noise, the noise of what, functioning to perfection, has no noise; to rustle is to make audible the very evaporation of noise: the tenuous, the blurred, the tremulous are received as the signs of an auditory annulation.” If Ohmaki contemplates the state of the “boundary,” Barthes configures the abstraction of structure, the drone of an encompassing context that is also, in the same breath, the particularity of its utterance. The rustle is evidence of existence, “proof of life,” as it were, but it similarly lays bare and brings to attention the mode in which it is made to work in a particular way as if by nature’s design. This may remind us of the convivial starlings in flight, a phenomenon called murmuration in which they forage or migrate en masse as if spurred by the madness of birds, folding in and out of the sky, swirling or flocking like bacteria or fish or a crowd. A part of the word is wonderfully and viscerally sonic. A murmur is a whisper, an undertone that speaks of human assemblies and computer technology.

This swarm of an ecology is currently in peril. And Ohmaki acknowledges this with awareness and humility: “Due to the influences of the COVID-19 pandemic, we human beings are on the diverging paths to reexamine our relations with others from the aspects of life, thought, nation and society, such as the unsolved energy problems and the pervasive effects of racism from the United States to the world... My search for the invisible existence is to grasp a beam of light in the dark.” Invisibility, therefore, is not absence in Ohmaki’s schema; it is a liminality from which to grasp a chance to reconsider the world and hopefully to arrest its drift towards irreversible perdition.

From this philosophical armature, we glean the enigmatic work of Ohmaki. In this exhibition, we see various instances of the rustle, the condition of the possibility, and the possibility itself playing out within the condition. There is a high level of control and acuity in these scenes even as there is contingency to be sharply perceived as well. In one quiet but compelling work, an impression of a floral motif is intricately and painstakingly spread on acrylic board through the idiosyncratic pigment of minerals1 mixed with correction fluid, which in its basic use is meant to disappear and recede into paper as it masks a mistake. This hybrid medium lavished on thermoplastic is discursively and materially intriguing, referencing “error” and the restitution of what is right through a particular substance that is white, opaque, applied with a brush like painting and made to dry in the manner of a primer; it also generates a semblance of a palimpsest, or layers of what is wrong and what is correct, some kind of pentimenti that mimics a brocade or embroidery, white embossed on white. Then there is what the artist calls flotage, a portmanteau presumably cobbled together from frottage and floating, a mixture of the vigor of rubbing and the feeling of buoyancy, of friction and lightness; here, the correction fluid is placed on alluringly placid glass. And finally, there is the exemplary suspended fabric, defying gravity and never touching the ground; inviting comparisons with sorcery and miracle; tempting the viewer with the algorithm of folds, the generosity and flair of ornament versus the volition of figure or representation, the absorption of air and light; and confusing the senses altogether. The drapery does not resist the elements in the ambience, but it does not solely rely on the atmosphere to keep it

afloat. The rustle is generated by the ghostly machine and the chance offered by the world, a mélange of metaphysics, technology, and phenomenology.

The reflection of Ohmaki on the precarity of this world leads him to weave another mesh of questions pertaining to identity. Certainly, these are broader inquiries that concretize in the predicaments of the self as it seeks to belong to a collective like family or culture or ideology. In this regard, he strikes a conversation with the writer Yutaka Haniya, who was born and raised in Taiwan when the country was ruled by Japan. Ohmaki relates that Haniya “felt uncomfortable with the harsh attitude that the Japanese held towards the Taiwanese people, and stated that he had lost faith both in Japan and in his own existence.” The juxtaposition of country and being is significant, because it reveals Ohmaki’s interest in the social environment as it mediates and is mediated by the self. Haniya pursued this problem of identity within the milieu of colonialism: “As he continued to question himself and his existence, he eventually arrived at the philosophy of ‘the discomfort of self-identity.’” Like existence, identity is an experiment, subjected to the vicissitudes of a repertoire of forces.

Ohmaki, if we revisit his words quoted in the beginning, is drawn to this frisson, this stir or fuss, the thrill elicited by an impossibility that rests on a boundary or a limit. He avails of the phrase “blink of an eye” to dramatize that moment when the investment of the self in the world vanishes unerringly and overwhelmingly. In this flash of intense annihilation and a sudden disappearance, or in the words of Barthes, of “annulation,” how do human beings live with the fragments or remains of their constitution, amid the ruin of civilizations, and the fantasies of what has become an obsessive identity? This blink, this restive double vision or quirky optical reflex, catches the elusive limit or boundary. This is the crystallization of a rustle, an apparition of sound, the whir of normalcy, but also the omen of a vast cataclysm, the murmur of a future.

伸嗣が抱く存在への疑念は、人と地球、そのどちらをも変えてしまうトラウマ的な出来 事によってもたらされる。世界に自分の居場所があり、才能と意識に目覚めた状態でそ こに立っているという確信は、人間本来の主体性を奪い、その特権的な力が差し迫る大 災害に気づかないよう、もしくは無関心であるようにしてしまった。生態系全体を飲み 込みながら押し寄せる大災害は、部分的にはまさにこの自信過剰な知性によって引き起 こされるというのに。

世界に存在するということは、ある種偽りの安心感を与えるのだと、大巻は考える。人

間が自然を支配しているという傲りを肥大化させる側面もある。このことが、困惑しな がらもひらめきに満ちた大巻の心に、不安定な存在のありようを喚起する「ざわめき」 の根幹を成す。それまで存在は、不変のもの、与えられたもの、つまりそれは生得権の ようなもの、もしくはこれが正常であると繰り返す音楽奏法のようなものだと直観され

ていたが、2011 年に起こった東日本大震災とそれに伴う福島の原発事故のような未曾有

の大惨事に直面したとき、存在とはとても繊細で脆いものであることが明らかになった。 失われたものに対する人間の傲慢さと、不安と、スペクタクルのどうしようもない不均 衡の中で、大巻は次のように問う。「物質と精神、自己と他者、その存在の境界線はど

こにあるのか。その存在をどう捉え、どう辿るのか。自分とは何か。人というものは何 か。」物質と精神の間にあるのはまさに、人とは何かと問うその声、または音である。

「境界」という概念は、大巻作品の美学の基本である。彼はこの「境界」に、平穏を脅

かす緊張のエネルギーを見出している。フランスの哲学者ロラン・バルトが、言語活動

を慣習と状況の双方から説明するために「ざわめき」という言葉を用いたのは興味深い。 それは人々に染み付いているものであり、同時に他者との会話における行為・身振りの

中で常に翻訳され続けるもので、これこそ近代性の本質である。1975 年に書かれた美

しい論考「言語のざわめき」で、バルトはこう綴る。「ざわめきというのは、順調に動 いているものの音のことである。そこで、つぎのような逆説が生ずるのだ。すなわち、

ざわめきとは、極限の音、不可能な音であり、完璧に動いているために音をたてないも のが発する音である。ざわめくということは、音の消滅そのものを聞かせるということ である。かすかな音、ごちゃ混ぜの音、ふるえる音が、音の抹消を示す記号として受け 取られるのだ。」

大巻が「境界」の状態を考察するならば、バルトは構造の抽象性を構成する。それは様々 なものを包含する文脈の持続音となると同時に、その発話の持つ特殊性でもある。ざわ めきは存在の証明であり、いわば「命の証明」だ。むき出しのままそこにあり、まるで

自然がそう設計したかと思うほど、ある特定の方法で動くよう作られたもののあり方へ

の留意を促す。例えば空を騒がしく舞うムクドリの大群を思い起こすかもしれない。マ

ーミュレーション（murmuration）と呼ばれるこの現象は、鳥が狂気に駆り立てられた かのように群れをなし、空に飲み込まれたり飛び出したりしながら、あるいはバクテリ アや魚の大群のように渦を巻いたり集合したりしながら、一つの大きな塊となって空を

さまよい、移動することを指す。この言葉には、腹を震わせるような素晴らしい音の響 きがある。ブツブツというつぶやき（murmur）はささやきの一種であり、人の心臓部 やコンピュータ技術の裏に流れる「低音」を表す言葉としても使われている。

大きな生態系の群れは今、危機に瀕している。大巻はこのことに、自覚と人間性を持 って対峙する。「現在私たちは、新型コロナウィルスの影響により、人々の生活や思

想、国の体制、社会のあり方まで、自己と他者との関係性を見直すべき岐路に立ってい

る。以前から続くエネルギーの問題や、アメリカから世界に広がった人種差別の問題

など……掴む事の出来ない存在の探求とは暗闇の中で一筋の光を掴む為のものである ……」つまり大巻の世界観において、見えないことは不在ではない。それは世界を再考

するチャンスを掴み、不可逆の破滅に向かう流れをなんとか食い止めるための境界の狭 間（リミナリティ）なのだ。

哲学の鎧で身を固めたところで、大巻の謎めいた作品を少しずつ読み解いていこう。展 覧会では、様々な「ざわめき」と、可能性の条件と、その条件の中で自らを試す可能性

そのものを見留めることができる。そこに広がる光景には、緻密にコントロールされた 鋭敏さが漂い、偶然さえも鮮明に知覚されるようになっている。静かな魅力を醸し出す 作品を見てみると、特殊な鉱物顔料 1 と修正液を用いて複雑かつ丹念に表現された花の

モチーフが、アクリル板の上に広がっている。修正液は本来、間違いを覆い隠しながら 紙にまぎれて消失していくことを目的としたものだ。熱可塑性プラスチックに贅沢に施

されたこのハイブリッド塗料は、理論的にも物質的にも非常に興味深い。白く不透明な 素材を絵の具のように筆で塗り付け、プライマーで下地をつくるように乾燥させる工程 を通じて、「エラー」を再現しているようにも「正しいもの」を復元しているようにも

見える。それは羊皮紙に書かれたものを一度消して上書きした古文書パリンプセストを 思わせるし、あるいは重ね塗りされた絵画が下から浮かび上がるペンティメントがブロ

ケードや刺繍を模倣したかのように、間違ったものと正しいものの層が、白地に白い 浮き彫りとして現れる。また、作家が「Flotage」と呼ぶ作品がある。これはおそらく frottage（フロッタージュ）と floating（浮遊）を組み合わせた「かばん語」で、こする

勢いと浮力、摩擦と軽さの感覚が融合されたものだろう。そして最後に、優雅に吊り下 げられ、重力に逆らって地面に触れることのない布の作品。それは魔術や奇跡との比較

を誘う。波打つ皺のアルゴリズム、装飾としての雄大さや華やかさと意思を感じさせる

形や表象の対比、空気や光の吸収など、鑑賞者を様々に誘惑し、感覚すべてを混乱させ る。やわらかな布はその場に流れる要素に抵抗するわけでもなく、また宙に浮いた状態

を保つために雰囲気だけに頼るのでもない。ざわめきは、幽霊のような機械と、形而上 学、テクノロジー、現象学の混合物として世界が提供する偶然により生成される。

世界の不安定さについての大巻の考察は、アイデンティティにまつわる複数の問いの網

を編んでいく。確かにそこには、家族や文化、イデオロギーのような集団に帰属しよう とする自己の苦悩の中で具体化していく、より視野の広い問いがある。そこで大巻は、 日本統治下の台湾で生まれ育った作家、埴谷雄高との対話を試みる。大巻は、埴谷が「当 時台湾人に対して厳しい態度で接する日本人の姿に違和感を抱き、日本を、そして自分 自身の存在を信じられなくなったと語っている」ことに関心を寄せる。国と自らの存在 を並列で語るのは重要で、自己を媒介し自己により媒介される社会環境への大巻の興味

が如実に現れている。埴谷は植民地主義の時代の最中に、アイデンティティの問題と向

冒頭に引用した言葉を再考すると、大巻は境界や限界の上に横たわる不可能性がもたら

すスリルや、身震いするほどの興奮状態に惹かれている。彼は「一瞬」という言葉を用 いて、世界への自己の投資が決定的に、そして圧倒的に消滅する瞬間をドラマチックに 表現している。強烈な破滅と突然の消失がもたらされる閃光の中で、もしくはバルトの

言葉を借りれば「無力化」の彼方で、人間はどうやってこの文明の廃墟の下、自らの肉 体の断片や残骸と、今や強迫性を帯びたアイデンティティへの幻想を抱えて、生きてい

くのだろうか。まばたき、この落ち着きのない二重の視界、あるいは視覚の奇妙な反射

運動は、とらえどころのない限界や境界を捉える。それはざわめきの結晶であり、音の 亡霊であり、正常な状態の出す低音であると同時に、大変動の前兆でもあり、未来への ささやきなのである。
