SCAVANGER HUNT
ELKHORN CORAL
ACROPORA PALMATA
CONSERVATION STATUS: Critically endangered
DESCRIPTION:
The iconic elkhorn coral, known for its bright golden color and horn-like branches, is a key species in Caribbean reef ecosystems, offering shelter to countless marine creatures.
Highly sensitive to environmental changes, this coral has faced dramatic declines, with estimates suggesting over 70% loss in the past 30 years. Restoration of elkhorn coral is central to the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Program, which has successfully grown hundreds of young elkhorn corals in an offshore nursery.
