SCAVANGER HUNT
GREEN SEA TURTLE
CHELONIA MYDAS
CONSERVATION STATUS: Endangered
DESCRIPTION:
This large turtle species, one of five in The Bahamas but found worldwide, can grow up to five feet long and weigh nearly 900 pounds. Young turtles primarily eat seagrass, switching to squid and jellyfish as adults. Marine plastic pollution poses a severe risk, as floating debris can resemble their prey. Protected in The Bahamas, this species is a frequent visitor to Ocean Cay’s reefs and seagrasses. Look out for baby green turtles in the marina!
