PROGRAMMES, PROJECTS, AND INITIATIVES
NEW PARTNERSHIPS FOR MARINE CONSERVATION
• Central to achieving the Foundation’s vision, we deepened our commitment to protecting and nurturing our blue planet with almost 50% of programme funding targeting environmental conservation, up from 25% last year.
• We worked with 4 new partners, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Nature Metrics, the Qatar Foundation, and the Horn Foundation, and by yearend, worked out the pillars of a partnership with Dr Silvia Earle and Mission Blue
CONTINUITY AND GROWTH FOR OUR LONG-TERM PARTNERS
• To mark our 13th consecutive year of transforming children’s lives together, we presented UNICEF with a symbolic cheque for €12 million, representing MSC's cumulative donations since 2009. The Plastics Goes to School programme enabled 2,370 more children to attend school, with 38 offices and classrooms refurbished, materials for 59 classrooms delivered, and 2,815 teachers trained under the Ministry of Education’s national programme. Through the Green Yoma project, 427 young people were trained in business management, job searching techniques, financial literacy, and blue and green economies, and 5 teams of young Ivorians developed innovative business ideas.
• Mercy Ships, supported for a 12th consecutive year, provided life-saving services in 6 West African countries
With the donation of free transportation of supplies in 127 containers, Mercy Ships treated 2,953 patients, performed 3,295 surgical procedures, and trained 1,297 medical professionals and community leaders
• In our 8th year of support for Marevivo, children and youths, and 312 teachers and school administrators were trained through the Guardian Dolphins and Nauticinblu education programmes in Italy and for the first time in Spain.
PROGRESS ON CORAL RESTORATION AND AWARENESS
• Since setting up our coral nursery at Ocean Cay under the Super Coral Programme, four of seven trees installed are populated with corals, with four genotypes of critically endangered elkhorn coral and 94 fragments successfully growing. Their 100% survival rate after a marine heat wave in the Bahamas last summer is a promising sign of resilience.
• MSC Foundation received registration as a non-profit organisation in the Bahamas and advanced several steps with the Department of Environmental Planning and Protection toward obtaining a research permit to expand the coral nursery
• With the Ba’a Foundation in Saudi Arabia, we developed the Coral Book reflecting the state of coral reefs in the Bahamas and the Red Sea.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE IN EIGHT EMERGENCIES
• The MSC Foundation and MSC offices mobilised to respond quickly in 8 emergencies through 14 relief operations, assisting about 355,700 people in 8 countries: Hawaii, Italy, Malawi, Mexico, South Africa, Syria, Türkiye, and Ukraine.
• After a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, the MSC Foundation and MSC offices helped earthquake survivors in Türkiye and Syria through multiple operations valued at about CHF 3,350,000 Direct assistance included converting 300 containers into accommodation for staff members and donating free transportation in 101 containers to the UN Refugee Agency.

• The Foundation's collaboration with the MSC Group and participation in naming ceremonies, industry exhibitions, panels, fairs, and events embodied and reinforced MSC's commitment to marine ecosystem conservation. Together, our convening power with partners, experts and thought leaders was demonstrated by the success of the High-Level Expert Panel Discussion on “Tourism Ocean Action for a Net Zero Future" co-hosted with the UN World Tourism Organization
• With twice-weekly social media posts on key happenings, new partnerships, programme milestones and achievements, we reached over 450,000 people and increased our followers by 50% on LinkedIn and 35% on average across all channels. With 21 web articles and monthly newsletters, we respectively reached 40,000 website users and 3,600 key stakeholders
EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT
• With two “Ready to Donate” drives for the Geneva Red Cross, we collected 800 kg of clothes, shoes, accessories, and toys. The generous employee response to the "Festive Smiles” campaign led to a donation of 394 gifts and 140 volunteer hours to help distribute holiday baskets to Geneva families in December.
• The Foundation commemorated its 5th anniversary in June by publishing a video reflecting its milestones and activities and curating a photo exhibit for Geneva staff in December.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
With our unique global shipping heritage, the MSC Foundation is keenly aware of the increasing fragility of our planet’s ecosystems. We are committed to supporting programmes that protect and restore our blue planet’s natural resources, varied species and human living environments.
Since setting up our coral nursery in the 64-squaremile Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in the Bahamas in December 2022, we reached a noteworthy milestone with the growth of four coral nursery trees hosting 94 corals representing four distinct genotypes
Their 100% survivorship rate after a marine heat wave hit the Bahamas last summer is a promising sign of resilience, setting them apart from most other corals in this marine environment.
The Super Coral Programme is our long-term commitment to rebuilding Ocean Cay reefs by pioneering the development of coral more resilient to environmental threats related to ocean warming and sharing our findings with coral stakeholders in other regions.
The Foundation works in partnership with Nova Southeastern University and the University of Miami in Florida and supports two graduate interns to apply their research related to corals in practice.
In 2023, they studied the effects of simulated predation on outplant survivability and used photogrammetry to quantify coral growth within nurseries. Each had the opportunity to collect data, observations, and samples at Ocean Cay. They also developed a training manual and 4 infographics for awareness-raising at the onboard MSC Foundation Centres: Coral Reefs Crisis, Care about Coral, How Sunscreen is Harming Coral Reefs, and The Critical Value of Coral Reefs
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
In March and June, the MSC Foundation leadership travelled to Ocean Cay, joining Dr Owen O’Shea, MSC Foundation Marine Research Programme Manager, to take stock of developments under the Super Coral Programme and meet with key partners and stakeholders including the University of Miami.
Between March and August, the MSC Foundation cleared several process milestones to advance plans to build a Marine Conservation Centre on Ocean Cay in 2024. The Foundation received registration as a non-profit organisation in the Bahamas, secured environmental clearance for the construction permit, and was approved to operate coral species research and restoration at scale at the future Centre.
In July, the MSC Foundation publicly announced the designation by Mission Blue of the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve as a Hope Spot through a video featuring Dr Silvia Earle. Through the digital launch, Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Committee Chair of the MSC Foundation and MSC Cruises Division Executive Chairman, accepted the honour and responsibility of his designation as Hope Spot Champion.
Ocean Cay was one among 157 worldwide hope spots scientifically identified as critical to ocean health at the end of 2023.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH THE INTERNATIONAL UNION FOR CONSERVATION OF NATURE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE RED LIST ASSESSMENT OF CORAL SPECIES
On 21 March, the MSC Foundation and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced their new partnership in the presence of Albert II, Prince of Monaco, during Monaco Ocean Week. The Foundation is contributing to completing the first comprehensive global assessment of the world’s coral species for an update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
During a week-long workshop in October, 17 coral experts assessed the status of more than 400 Indo-Pacific corals spanning at least 17 families. The experts will submit the results for a 2024 update of this critical list for preventing species extinction worldwide.
NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH NATURE METRICS FOR E-BIODIVERSITY SAMPLING ON MSC CRUISES ROUTES
The MSC Foundation forged a new partnership, announced during the MSC Euribia Naming Ceremony in Copenhagen on 8 June, with Nature Metrics to support the eDNA Mapping for Actions project to reverse biodiversity loss. This collaboration facilitates the collection of reliable biodiversity data through eDNA sampling on MSC Cruises ships in the Baltic and North Seas.
By yearend, samples were taken from MSC vessels Euribia, Preziosa, and Poesia on 10 of the 11 planned cruises. Initial analyses by Nature Metrics identified 3,274 distinct species along our routes, including 17 threatened species on the IUCN Red List
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
RESTORATION OF 40 HECTARES OF MANGROVES WITH THE QATAR FOUNDATION
In November, on the sidelines of a Doha ceremony to name MSC World Europa, a new partnership between MSC Foundation, the Qatar Foundation and the MSC Group was signed to restore up to 40 hectares of mangrove forests over five years. This collaboration supports part of an innovative national programme involving the Qatar Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Qatar University, and the Foundation to conserve and restore Qatar’s coastal environment.
This project aims to demonstrate the concept of “building with nature” as an effective response to sea-level rise and pioneers a scalable approach that leverages the power of conserving, restoring, and nurturing three symbiotic coastal ecosystems –mangrove forests, seagrass, and coral.
PARTNERSHIP DISCUSSIONS WITH MISSION BLUE, MSC CRUISES AND EXPLORA JOURNEYS TO EDUCATE, CONSERVE, AND INSPIRE ACTION
A month after Dr Silvia Earle named Explora I in New York City, the legendary scientist visited MSC headquarters in Geneva in November with her Mission Blue team.
Pivotal discussions identified three pillars for a 2024 partnership agreement: seagrass restoration in Spain, ocean literacy activities for Explora Journeys and MSC Cruises onboard guests, and employee engagement.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
We support vulnerable communities around the world, particularly those living by seas, oceans and rivers, to achieve their full potential and equal opportunities for sustainable development.

OUR WORK ON THE WAVES
Our work on the waves is a unique opportunity and a perfect example of how the MSC Foundation capitalises on the MSC Group’s global reach. Working in partnership with the MSC Cruises division, MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, our Onboard Foundation Representatives reach out to thousands of cruise guests yearly, raising awareness of urgent needs to protect our blue planet and its people and mobilising funds. In 2023 we opened a discreet Foundation presence on Explora I and inaugurated three touchpoints on MSC Euribia: a new MSC Foundation Centre, an MSC Foundation Hallway, and an MSC Foundation Lab, a newly designed space for delivering youth edutainment activities.
