FROM OUR DIRECTOR
Fall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is not signaled by changing leaves, but rather by the cool mornings, festivals and football! Weekends begin with Friday night lights, Saturday and Sundays are for cheering on your favorite college and professional teams. This Embrace issue we trace the history of stadiums, and the evolution of Americas favorite pastime - tailgating. Fall also has a spooky side and local cemetery tours offer a unique experience in that they teach us about local history through actor portrayal of important historic figures. Two tours that everyone looks forward to is the Krebs Cemetery Tour and the Old Biloxi Cemetery Tour. Arts and crafts have always been a large part of the coast heritage area; people see beautiful work and wonder about the artist. We are excited to introduce a new feature to our newsletter—the Artist’s Spotlight. Each issue we will highlight a local artist. In this issue, RoxAnn traveled to Picayune to learn more about Ashley Anderson Mason, an artist creating colorful murals that started in her hometown and has expanded to the Gulf Coast. I hope everyone enjoys fall along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. There’s so much to see and do, so get out and take in the culture and heritage of our region.

The cemetery’s tombs, like the individuals interred inside, inevitably face a similar fate. The natural process of deterioration affects all aspects of the cemetery. Not only is a place for people to return to the earth which they came, it also acts as an ever-changing museum of sorts—one in which decay is permanently on exhibit.

JOURDAN RIVER BLUEWAY SPOTLIGHT As part of the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area’s Nature-Based Tourism effort, the Blueways program was established to provide explorers an unforgettable experience along miles of beaches, rivers, creeks and bayous. There are currently 15 Blueways, or water trails, that have been mapped out for recreational canoers and kayakers within the six coastal counties in Mississippi. Here is a quick look at the Jourdan River Blueway in Hancock County. The Jourdan River, running through the center of Hancock County, is one of the primary coastal streams that brings water straight to the Gulf of Mexico. The Jourdan River Blueway Trail links the McLeod Park canoe launch to the Bayou Talla boat launch. The river plays host to a variety of water activities including canoeing and kayaking along an 8.5-mile river trail. North of the McLeod Park launch, the upper half of the river is a tranquil home to wildlife, hardwood forests and artesian springs.
Paddlers will encounter natural oxbow lakes and beautiful bluffs all the way up to Bayou Bacon. Down river from the McLeod Park launch, paddlers will enjoy exquisite sandbars to explore or to rest and absorb the unparalleled scenery. This section of the river is influenced by the tide and fishermen can find largemouth bass, catfish and alligator gar that are so huge you’ll want to stay in your kayak! For nature enthusiasts, visitors can take the Jourdan River Blueway Trail through coastal floodplains where they can explore a unique riverine ecosystem. The river trail has ample and accessible launches at McLeod Park and the Bayou Talla boat launch, so paddlers can easily cruise through the natural beauty of Hancock County. There are many restaurants that line the river, so hungry paddlers can stop for some delicious local eats. Even the birds love Jourdan River. Eagles, hawks and osprey can be found in the tall trees that line the river.

RESTORING the
SAILFISH 4ä ) - 2ä -- //
For the better part of 70 years, the Sailfish has been a fixture of the Biloxi tourism industry offering visitors and locals alike the opportunity to experience Mississippi’s maritime culture firsthand. The Sailfish is a 41-foot excursion vessel based in the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor that is either a tour boat that catches shrimp or a shrimp boat that shuttles tourists. Either way, the end result is just plain fun!

C
onstructed locally in 1950 for the original owner and operator, Louis James Gorenflo, the Sailfish and the tourism company passed through the possession of Captain Joe Scholtes, to Captain Peter Skrmetta, to his son Louis Skrmetta and eventually to its current owners Mike and Brandy Moore with the Biloxi Cruise Company, LLC. The vessel is powered by an inboard diesel engine and has a large, enclosed cabin with interior seating for passengers. There is an upper deck that can provide a sea breeze and greater views on fair weather days and acts as a platform for sojourning anglers. On the stern of the boat is the kangaroo rigging and winch used to deploy and return the 16-foot trawl net that rakes in the bounties of the sea to the delight of the onlooking crowd. It is only logical that after some seven decades in service, the Sailfish would need a little repair and restoration from time to time to maintain its seaworthiness and continue its storied history plying the waters of the Biloxi shoreline. In early 2021, Mike and Brandy, acting as good stewards of the renowned vessel, knew that it was again time to drydock the Sailfish and undergo a major renovation to the vessel’s hull to continue to keep this legend afloat. Years of faithful service and exposure to the elements of wind and sun and pounding sea had taken their toll, and it was time to make a major investment in the Sailfish. For anyone who has ever owned a boat, the truism persists: There is nothing cheap about boats. This repair was going to be a major financial investment for Mike and Brandy at a time when revenues were down for all tourism-based

businesses due to the continuing effects of the global COVID pandemic. Fortunately for Mike and Brandy, their Biloxi Cruise Company had years prior chosen to partner with the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area (MSGCNHA) and seek membership to the MSGCNHA Outpost Business Recognition Program. The Gulf Coast Outpost Business Recognition Program is part of the 2016 Nature-Based Tourism Plan for Coastal Mississippi and was developed for the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area by stakeholders in the industry. Business owners and operators are recognized through a checklist that focuses on training, sustainability and stewardship. The program is aimed at those companies whose primary business is dependent on the natural environment in Mississippi’s six coastal counties and could include businesses like eco-tour companies, locally owned outfitters, charter boat operators, tour guides, eco-lodges and agritourism entities to name a few. The Outpost Business Program seeks to foster economic development while promoting environmental conservation and stewardship of Coastal Mississippi’s natural resources. The qualifications for membership are somewhat stringent and require a certain level of training and knowledge of Coastal Mississippi’s history and natural environment, but the benefits for nature-based business members are substantial. The MSGCNHA can offer member businesses access to environmental training, advertising through the MSGCNHA and our partners’ websites, marketing materials including decals and logos that can be used on their own and other’s websites, and most notably for Mike and Brandy, access to the MSGCNHA Community Grant Program to help grow and sustain Outpost businesses; a program that is normally open only to non-profit entities along the Gulf Coast.

As a member of the Gulf Coast Outpost Business Recognition Program, the Biloxi Cruise Company applied for and was awarded a 2021 Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area Community Grant to partially fund the needed restorations on the Sailfish , the heart and soul of Mike and Brandy’s naturebased business. The Heritage Area was happy to assist in an effort that would not only promote tourism and economic growth, but also help preserve a historic vessel and company that was built, founded and has operated in the City of Biloxi since 1950. This is one of very few tourism businesses from that era on the Gulf Coast that has been in continuous operation to this day and has certainly become part of the fabric of our coastal culture. In the fall of 2021, with the close of the summer tourism season, Mike and Brandy motored the Sailfish north up Old Fort Bayou to the Harris Marine boatyard in Ocean Springs, Miss., where the boat would spend the winter in dry-dock undergoing the much need repairs. Once on dry land, the renovation of the Sailfish could begin by removing the compromised side decking and revealing the extent of the needed repairs. Although confined to the gunwale down, the amount of work needed was slightly more extensive than Mike and Brandy had anticipated. The replacement of several ribs and side boards would be needed using old growth cypress lumber, a material traditionally used for boat building in this area that is known for its durability and rot resistance. The new materials would be anchored in place with the use of all stainless fasteners and an exuberance of marine epoxy. The final sealing and painting of the hull would have the Sailfish ready for an early spring 2022 re-launch; just in time for another busy tourism season. Maintaining a historic wooden vessel’s seaworthiness in the 21st century is unquestionably an arduous task; particularly one that is still used in daily service. Unlike 70 years ago, wooden boatbuilding is an art form that is disappearing from our culture and finding a craftsman with those skills today can be challenging. Traditional materials are both expensive and hard to find, and all repairs are inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard and must comply with Coast Guard regulations. The restoration of the Sailfish has helped to preserve our maritime history and culture on the Gulf Coast and its return to service will ensure its continued contribution to our local economy and to our reputation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as a tourist destination.

The Pine Hill Festival is celebrating its’ 40th year since inception. The festival is planned and organized by a dedicated group of community volunteers and loyal sponsors. It is a wonderful way to celebrate the heritage of Stone County, their citizens and the creativity found in South Mississippi.
When asked, Betsy Rowell, Executive Director of the Stone County Economic Development Partnership said, “This is an annual event that local families have enjoyed for many years.” Tyler Eggers told us his family attended Pine Hill Festival when he was a young boy. This weekend he and his wife attended with their young son. Those stories are so rewarding to share with volunteers and sponsors. A quick tag check indicates visitors from surrounding counties and states, including Alabama, Florida and Louisiana, attended.
There are several assorted food vendors, arts and crafts, a plethora of children's activities, antique and classic car shows and a 5K & 10K fun run. In addition, two stages for entertainment, the live music is sure to please. Each year, the Stone County Chamber of Commerce hosts the event and this year’s sponsor is Carpenter’s Pole & Piling. Organizers kicked off this year’s event with a celebration of Stone County’s historical and cultural storytelling, made possible by the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area. The Pine Hill Festival is centered around community. While there are visitors from near and far who come back to Wiggins each year to attend the festival, the artists, cuisine and entertainers are local and regional from the greater Gulf South.
"Over 100 vendors provided great food, children's activities, handmade crafts, original art and much more," said Festival Coordinator Sandra Kirke. This festival brings back the simple pleasures people missed since returning after the pandemic. Experiencing the best in art, wellness, mindfulness, dance, vendor booths, multicultural musical performances, kid zones and plenty of food makes the Pine Hill Festival one to visit year after year.

Hav e n s Down Home Creamery

A
s you arrive at Havens Down Home Creamery in
Lucedale, Miss., you instantly notice the serene backdrop of rolling and hilled pastureland. Far in the distance are the milking cows that gracefully graze about an open pasture. From the whistled, long-pitched song of a bobwhite in the piney woods along the property, to the crows of a rooster in the pen, to the peaceful survey of the farmland and brushy pastures, this property is a sanctuary of cultivation.

Ty, the youngest son of the Havens children bottle feeding a baby cow. The Havens’ children value and enjoy doing their daily activities at their dairy farm and the product they collectively produce is captured in everything they yield. Kristen and Preston Havens and their four children, Tanner, Presley, Ty and Paisley, work the 44-acre farm milking Jersey cows twice daily seven days a week and bottling their milk six days a week. Their heartwarming journey into dairy farming began when the couple’s eldest daughter, Presley was thought to be lactose intolerant. During that time, the Havens had a beef herd and used their Jersey cow for their beef orphans. At the urging of a family friend, the Havens were told Presley may not have been lactose intolerant at all, but rather the processing of the milk is

what may have been the irritant. The next day, they took matters into their own hands, Kristen’s first Jersey cow was hand milked, she let the milk cool, and Presley tolerated it marvelously. For the next three years, Kristen hand milked, and in the process, Havens Down Home Creamery, as we know it, took shape. As I walked through the process with Kristen, she educated me on a day in the life of a working farm. I soon learn milk is the most complicated ingredient one can ever work with. As Kristen weaves through the tour, it becomes apparent it depends on so much like the seasonality of the milk, what the animals are eating, the breed of cow, even changes in the weather. Still keeping with the slow pasteurization process, they heat their milk to 145 degrees then they hold it for 30 minutes to be cooled down; however, they do not homogenize their milk. This process allows the Havens to produce the most velvety, pure tasting cream line to include, white and chocolate milk, buttermilk, butter, ice cream, mozzarella and white and yellow cheddar cheeses. Their mission was to produce high-quality, consistently delicious milk and dairy products that were rich, high in protein and high in butter fat product for the Gulf Coast community to enjoy.
Life | 41
It soon became evident why the Havens dairy products are so popular. One taste of their small batch ice cream and you are instantly transported to your grandparents’ house on a hot summer day running inside, hearing the screen door slam behind you, asking if the homemade frozen scoop of deliciousness is ready for you to bathe in. With the popularity of their milk, butter, cheese and ice cream, it is no wonder why they pull a trailer load of variations three times a week to local grocers and specialty markets in nearby towns and communities. With Tanner being the eldest, and a recent graduate from high school, he has the time to assist his dad build their new venture, an on-site creamery store. With six full-time employees and six more on seasonal payroll, the popularity of the creamery has grown exponentially. Business has quadrupled for the couple and their children, and it makes sense to build an on-site grab-and-go, full-service store for their loyal customers.
The creamery is not limited to solely dairy products. They also provide grass and grain-fed beef products. You will find perfectly packed and vacuum-sealed products for your family in a wide variety. Between the cuteness of their youngest daughter Paisley, affectionately called “Button,” the coy smiles and laughter amongst them, the Havens have transformed this agricultural community dairy by simply making delicious products that reflect the unique quality of the milk they use. From farm to table or farm to fork, the Havens Down Home Creamery have made this farm their love in life.

I
t’s early spring here in the Hurley community and Darcy Rogers has her hands full with the new breeds she has added to the Hurley Roost roster. “Chicken math,” as chicken owners affectionately tease, has laid claim to Hurley Roost. Rogers has 64 adults and 55 chicks on-site with her collection growing. The breeds she uses for her amazingly rich, quality eggs are: Ameraucanas, Bantam Silkies, Standard Cochins, Jubilee Orpingtons, Salmon Faverolle, English Cuckoo Marans and French Cuckoo Marans. Hurley Roost boasts three hybrid breeds as well, Olive Eggers, Red Sex Links and Favacauna. Hurley Roost introduced their newest addition, a colossal breed known as the the Indio Gigante. These chicks joined the pecking lineup in March of this year. Standing at a whopping 38 to 41 inches tall, these yard ornaments will be available this time next year. With 16 years under her belt, Rogers has learned a thing or two about the immense satisfaction and enjoyment that comes from raising backyard birds. Unbelievably, Rogers and her daughter, Avery, have named each of their feathered friends. Martha, the eldest, is a black Austrolorp and provides the family with a giant egg each day. Rogers does not consider her chickens breeding stock. For instance, ‘Glitch,’ a secondary rooster, expects some affection before Rogers retreats for the evening. If pressed for time and Rogers is remiss with her attention to Glitch, he aims narcissistic, egocentric-regressed behavior right at her as she enters the run the next day. And who could resist the king of the coop, ‘Mr. Harry Styles,’ the gentleman Jubilee Orphington with amazing hair atop his feathered head. Of her breeds, Rogers’ most docile and best egg-layers are the Jubilee Orphington birds. This flock plays well with others and are great with kids, being held or carried around is something they immensely enjoy. A great forager and brown egg-layer are the English and French Marans. The Marans come from a region in France and a diverse array of colors such as, blue, black and splash pattern. Their rich brown eggs are superior in taste and quality, great for baking. Whether you live in a rural setting or have a hefty backyard in town, it is possible to add a few chickens to your life. They are entertaining to watch, friendly and curious. In addition to fresh eggs, they provide free bug control and more manure for your garden than you’ll ever need.

After he retired, farming became his life, and he purchased the farmstand business in 2016. He owned it for three years and then sold the stand. Hurley being a small community, Haleigh and Christopher learned the farmstand was ready for new management and purchased it back to stay in the family.

On top of the freshly made items, Haleigh offers local tomatoes, broccoli, zucchini, green, red and yellow bell peppers, cucumbers, corn, red potatoes, jalapenos, watermelons, cantaloupes, honey dew, seasonal strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, on top of the statewide growers and suppliers of wholesale fruits and vegetables like her friends in Ponotoc, Miss. Tilley Farms Produce offers several cooler items for their patrons. Cleaned and chopped greens, diced sweet potatoes, diced squash and zucchini are bagged and ready for a quick meal prep. Havens Down Home Creamery, a local dairy just up the road over the county line in Lucedale, supplies Tilley Farms Produce with half gallon and gallons of white, chocolate and buttermilk, fresh butter, their scrumptious Southwestern Spreadable Cheese (I recommend using Frito-Lay Scoops) and their decadent ice cream flavors sell out the moment the restock alert makes its way around social media and community communication.

If you are looking for fresh eggs, you will not be disappointed with their selection of fresh eggs from Hurley Roost. Tilley Farms Produce offers a variety of meat products from Conecuh and Country Pleasin’ brand sausages. All these cooler items provide convenience to the Hurley and surrounding communities since the closest big box store is nearly 30 minutes travel time. If you want to add a new plant to your green thumb collection, Tilley Farms Produce offers varieties of tomatoes and pepper plants. Shrubs, plants, fruit trees and potted plants are also readily available. Specialty items include the popular local honey by Alison Hawes Honey Company, fresh bread made by The Bread Man, locally made jams and jellies, spices and smoke rubs and locally made goats milk soap. Tilley Farms Produce represents the needs of its community and provides a viable market of fresh farm to table produce and farm to fork meat within their market.
