Tin Shui Wai Game Lab presents board games created by students in the urban design program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong during a visualization workshop. The one-week workshop focused on the new town of Tin Shui Wai situated in Hong Kong’s New Territories. Five groups started their work by sketching and observing public spaces in different parts of the district. Afterwards the students continued to design and produce games that are now exhibited for the community in the Magic Carpet event held at the Tin Sau Bazaar during the Mid Autumn Festival 2014.

THE GAME LAB

The pre-term workshop Introduction to Visualizing Urbanism and Urban Design was now organized for the third consequtive time for arriving students in the M.Sc. in Urban Design program at CUHK. Each year the workshop has tried to start off the academic year with a quick-paced introduction to fresh design thinking and visual methods found in architecture and urbanism today, thus encouraging experimental and outside-the-box forms of portraying urban ideas, infromation and findings. Acknowledging its short duration, the visualizing workshop has in all of its installments come to work with an idea of a pre-set end-product. Whether a book, a map or an exhibition, having such form of defined outcome has proved helpful in achieving results in the short amount of time available. The workshop has worked to demonstrate the wide spectrum of visual production that urban professionals today encounter and face as expectations. With several possibilities in producing and visualizing their work, certain expectations also exist in communicating design thinking to all kinds audiences. In the program, we’ve thought that the immersive start into these processes, works also to demonstrate how a certain capacity for visual production is readily part of the urban designer’s professional realm. This year under the title of Tin Shui Wai Game Lab the workshop’s special focus was seeing games as a form of participatory design and utilizing the process in the urban context. This thinking has many precedents. On one level, games are in some ways similar to urban environments as they are also designed with rules and guidelines. On another level, games can be seen as a way of coming together in cities, often spreading out into streets and parks (exemplified for instance by mahjong in Chinese culture or chess in the West). Futhermore, games have been sometimes tried out as forms of workshop production, planning participation and understading the role of different actors in urban development. Various simulators and city-building games such as SimCity or Cities XL have made the topic popular as computer games, whereas classic board games like Monopoly take the city as their financial setting. But as the workshop could only approach the subject with limited resources and time, the focus was try and presonally

observe the urban environment and recognize urban and social patterns that could in be develped into simplified concepts in the design format of a board game. Geographically, the workshop focused on the new town of Tin Shui Wai, which has been also central to the programme’s activities in the past seasons of studios and thesis work. After introduction lectures and a half-day field trip, the students divided into five groups with different themes and continued by observing public spaces within their individual thematic setting and sketching their findings by hand. After the field work, each group presented their developed findings and collected sketches in a brief mid-review presentation, along with their concepts for producing a board game. The remaining time was utlized to produce a fullsize mockup of the game design along with its ephemeral materials which were presented at the review. Finalized board games were produced during following week to be displayed and presented on location in Tin Shui Wai, on the occasion of the Magic Carpet screening event (www.magiccarpet.hk) held in September at Tin Sau Bazaar, during the Mid-Autumn festival. The students participation in the Magic Carpet Tin Shui Wai proved successful in providing first hand experience on interacting with members of the community, explaining design ideas and seeing how others perceive and interact with design material and what challenges lie in these processes. The results of the workshop and the Magic Carpet event are gathered in this booklet as documentation, but it also functions as a further excercise in communicating the work produced yet into another format and other audiences.
