Knowing Your Culture: Marindukanon Chizu To Nihongo Jisho Buenavista and Mogpog Cultural Mapping Don Luis Hidalgo Memorial School, Boac Marinduque May 4, 2019
The activity started with an opening program or preliminaries hosted by Ms. Mila Grace Gutierrez, MPA student. Dr. Randy Nobleza gave his Opening Remarks through a Video Presentation on the Marindukanon Cultural Arts Studies. He also presented the criteria or standards for rating the presentation and the three (3) things to consider in the presentation of reflections focusing on the insights, its translation and on the grammatical rules both in Hiragana and Katakana. The morning session focused on Tangible Culture. The first presentation is all about Bodies of Water by Ms. Michell H. Moreno & Levelyn L. Pastoral. They presented the Yook Watershed or spring which serves as the waiting area or comforting zone of the communities that uses water from the spring and also for watering fields of rice and others which is located in Mount Siluan.
Another bodies of water presented is the Bacod Bay found in Pamuntangan Point and Bangabanga which is 1.25 km away from Balanacan Port, Mogpog, Marinduque, where the ruins of historical Balanacan pier could be found. This was built by Japanese company called Gold Star Iron Mining Company for the Shipment of iron mines collected in the Island of Marinduque. The next presentation is all about Protected Areas by Ms. Mila Grace Gutierez & Ms. Ria M. Lamac. They presented Integrated Community Marine Protected Area located in Brgy. Yook and Libas, Buenavista. One of their bases is the Municipal ordinance no. Vision: Make MSC a premiere college in the region along the fields of Instruction, Research, Extension and Production. 159 s. 2014. declaring the establishment and management of marine protected area. Their key informants are Mr. Arlino Reyes and Mr. Rino Labay and Engr. Ranel Castillo. Proper Management of the Integrated Community Marine Protected area will provide higher livelihood opportunity to the people of Brgy. Libas and Yook.
Another protected area found in Mogpog Marinduque is the Community Marine Resources found in Barangay Silangan which can be considered as an attraction in welcoming visitors surrounding San Andres and Natangko island Group. Claire San Juan Menro of Municipal Government of Mogpog and Mr. Rino Labay are their key informants.
A reaction was given by the guest from Mogpog Ms. Marlyn Montejo that a rehabilitation will be done because some parts of marine resources are being affected and destroyed. They also have to make sure also that no violation will be made since it is already an ordinance as added by Doc. Randy Nobleza who is already familiar with the Marine Protected Area in Buenavista, Marinduque.
The next presentation is about Thematic maps: Hazards & Risks by Ms. Maria Mercedes N. Regis and Mr. Vincent Villamin. Ms. Regis presentation highlighted the Pinaglabanan Site of Barangay Libas in the Municipality of Buenavista which is within 40 meters storm surge prone area and is also a very significant natural resource. This is also a good area for living since it is just a meter away from coastal area.

The next presentation is about Commercial Buildings by Ms. Mariam B. Rivamonte and Ms. Bernadith R. Lacerna. They presented the oldest Rice and Corn Mill Houses in Buenavista and Mogpog which have been operating for more than 50 years already.
The next presentation is about Heritage houses and Venacular Architecture by Ms. Maria Shiela S. Saet & Ms. Maita M. Lazares. The historical value of such heritage houses gave them an overview and feature of what they looked like before. Although they were already renovated still the replica was also based on the original house in order to keep the owner’s identity. As suggested, any program or project by the Municipal Government on the preservation of such private cultural heritage should be given consideration but there should have a MOA to be acted upon so that those private-owned heritage houses will be publicly recognized. What is important is that we were able to know the history and the story behind those heritage houses which was the essence of this activity. The morning session ended at 11:49 A.M.

The afternoon session started at exactly 1:04 PM. The presentation focused on Intangible Culture.
The first presentation is all about Craftsmanship by Ms. Tiffany Collantes and Mr. James Aaron Manalili. Ms. Tiffany presented the Lukmon weaving crafts of Mr. Ernesto Mayores, 72 years old of Brgy. Bagtingon, Buenavista who is doing the lukmon weaving for almost 40 years. Lukmon is thicker than nito vines and could easily be found in Brgy. Bagtingon. This is the main source of income of most people in that particular place. Another presentation is on the significance of traditional intangible heritage on craftmanship in Mogpog. Mr. James Manalili shared the art crafts made and sculpted by Mr. Salvador “Buddy” Liwanagan who is a well-known sculpture artist in Mataas Na Bayan Mogpog, Marinduque. He started from small handicrafts to bigger ones and made his way in showcasing his crafts for everyone. One of the famous sculptures that he made is the door of St. Joseph, Spouse of Mary Parish Church located in Gasan Marinduque. Another Obra Maestra of Ka Buddy is the image of Padre Pio and Divine Mercy Shrine in Sto. Tomas Batangas, Angels holding holy water curving in St. Joseph Spouse of Mary Parish in Gasan, Marinduque.
The next presentation is all about Oral Tradition, Expressions Including language by Jane Carla F. Jasmin and Luzviminda M. Llena. Ms. Jasmin presented the Alamat of Brgy. Hanagdong. She presented the oldest Hanagdong Tree where the place originated. Another story presented is the story of Gintong Barko by Selda. This illustrates the life and history of a particular person, place or thing. What is important in this undertaking is they were able to learn the origin, culture and traditions of the people in the community.

The last and the final presentation focused on Performing Arts by Ms. Maridell F. Hermosa and Ms. Sherly Labayna. Ms. Hermosa presented the “Moro-moro” in Mogpog which is an open stage drama performed during fiestas, teacher’s day celebration and other cultural activities which are being performed by teachers in Mogpog district with Mrs. Cecilia Fe Mandalihan as the stage director. This stage drama usually runs for 24 hours or two days; but could also be performed for 4 hours only. Ms. Labayna presented the Putong in Malbog, Buenavista which is commonly conducted through singing with the music of the guitarist, dancing and crowning of the celebrants which usually last for one (1) and a half (1/2) hour. The afternoon session ended at 2:05 PM
Through all the presentations given. We could prove that “Experience is the best teacher”. Conducting cultural mapping in Mogpog and Buenavista, left a marked as we contributed in the Marindukanon Culture. Conducting such activity made us closer to a different community where we witnessed their simple way of living and the preservation of our cultural heritage. Excitement, fun and inculculable experiences with hospitable people are what the participants gained from this activity.
