PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) The PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and PA Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) are programs which provide businesses a dollar for dollar tax credit for up to 90% of their business tax when directed to a non-profit school such as the Mount. When EITC and/or OSTC funds are received, the Mount distributes these funds as tuition aid to students from families where the household income does not exceed $75,000, plus $15,000 for each additional child in that family. EITC has been a PA state program since 2001. Due to recent media publicity, it receives an ever-increasing number of applicants. Applications are due on but not before July 1 unless a business commits for 2 years. Then applications may be submitted on May 15. OSTC funds are made available as scholarship aid to students who choose to go to a non-public school because they live in a public school district that has been designated as “under performing”. The application process is a simple one – all online. For more information go to www.newpa.com/EITC or call Maggie Doyle, Director of Finance, at 215-233-3177 Ext. 316.

From the President Dear Friends,

Prayer, fasting and serving the dear neighbor, along with other matters of the heart are pulsating within the Mount community, calling us to be attentive to God’s presence and action in our lives. I pray, during this time of reflection, that your response to the invitation of grace and transformation will bring the new life of Easter to your hearts. Let us remember each other as we once again journey through this holiest of seasons. Celebrauction is one of the highlights of our winter at the Mount. This year our theme was, “Run for the Roses.” In Dan Folgelberg’s song with the same title, he sings that the Kentucky Derby is “the chance of a lifetime…and it’s high time you joined in the dance.” I like to think that the Mount experience is not one of chance, but of opportunity! The poem contained in the invitation to this night highlights our school motto, “spes messis in semine,” a belief that is engraved in the heart of each Mount graduate. Our young women’s Run for the Roses is an experience of four years of educational challenges, deepening insights, and missionfilled opportunities that only serve to intensify their desire to become the best. By the time you read this, our 31st Celebrauction, Run for the Roses, will be history, and we will once again, delight in the generosity of so many alumnae, current, new, and life-time parents, along with many friends of the Mount who made this evening an enduring memory. As usual, our guests were generous in their bidding, and the success of the evening was an acknowledgement and affirmation of their commitment to the future of our young women. Cindy Moore, Auction Director, and Sue Ellen Morris, our Parent Chair made for a winning combination of leadership and style that led our committee chairs, parent volunteers, and students to the Winners’ Circle. I am indebted to them for their commitment to excellence and dedication to the Mount community. Our master of ceremony, Steve Comly, of the Comly Brothers Auctioneers, kept us entertained as he prodded our guests to raise their paddles high for the Mount. For thirty-one years, the Comly’s have supported us by donating their services. I am grateful and indebted to them for their outstanding and enduring service.

Each year our theme is presented by the work of Jim Paul of T. J. Paul and his team of designers. “Run for the Roses, made for a wonderful sight!” Thank you, Jim, for your ardor and zeal for our students and mission. In closing, we remember what these pages reveal, what Celebrauction is about, and why telling the stories of our “confident, competent, courageous and compassionate” students is important to the present and the future. May the pages of this Mount Magazine stir you and bolster your belief that we are truly educating founders. God bless, Sister Kathleen Brabson, SSJ President

MOCK TRIAL

4 On January 10-11, the Mount’s Mock Trial team competed in the 5th Annual LaSalle University Mock Trial Tournament. Thirty-two teams competed from both local and outlying area high schools. There were three rounds (three trials) to determine the top two teams. The top two teams would then compete in a final round. Unfortunately, this year we did not advance beyond the initial three trials.

The Montgomery County competition began in early February with 28 teams competing. The Mount won both trials in round 1, soundly defeating first Wissahickon High School A by a score of 5-0 and then Souderton High School by a score of 3-0. In the quarterfinals on February 24, the Mount decisively defeated Wissahickon High School B by a score of 3-0. The Mount lost a close, spirited, and exciting trial to North Penn High School by a score of 2-1 in the semifinal round on March 3. The Mock trial team participates at a competition.

ROBOTICS: FIREBIRDS 6

This year, the Firebirds are building a robot to play the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) 2015 game, Recycle Rush. The goal of Recycle Rush is to stack gray storage totes on top of each other and place round recycle bins on top of the stacks. The higher the stack is, the more points it is worth. Bonus points can be earned in various ways, such as stacking special yellow totes in a specific area that requires collaboration with the opposing alliance. Our robot has mechanisms to pick up and stack totes and recycle bins, as well as a “fishing rod” apparatus to pull recycling bins toward the robot from a step spanning the middle of the field. The team looks forward to competing in competition in the spring! The Firebirds shake hands with Brian Roberts, CEO of Comcast.

MEMORY PROJECT

The Memory Project is a unique initiative in which art students create portraits for children and teens around the world that have been neglected, orphaned, or disadvantaged. Assuming that children in such situations tend to have few personal keepsakes, one purpose of the portraits is to provide them with special mementos that capture a piece of their childhood. To do this, art students receive photos of children on the Memory Project’s waiting list and then work in any medium to create the portraits (drawing, painting, digital art, collage, etc). Next, Memory Project team members delivered the portraits to the children as gifts, and take photos of the children holding the portraits so the art students can see the delivery in action.

Women as Founders

by: Nora Cipressi ’15, Bridget Sykes ’15 and Annemarie Branco ’15

Pictured above: Seniors who took the Women as Founders Seminar course and presented during Women as Founders Week.

I

n the spring of our junior year we would meet twice a week for our Senior Seminar: Women as Founders course. At first we didn’t know what to expect since it was a new course offering, but as the quarter progressed we began to learn about about incredible women. Every two weeks, a new teacher would come in and focus on a different topic. One week we would be discussing art with Sister Cathie Mehgian and the next week we would learn about Church history with Dr. Caviston. Our discussions varied but were all rooted in the theme “Women as Founders.” It was a wonderful opportunity for us to discover the ways in which women have made a positive impact in various fields. In particular, it was fascinating to learn more about the Sisters of Saint Joseph who founded the Mount. All the students in the Senior Seminar class presented an overview of their projects to the school in December during our Women as Founders Week. It was incredible to see what our classmates created and organized. We learned that we have the potential to be founders and to make a powerful impact in the world like the women who came before us. Senior Seminar: Women as Founders was an opportunity to live out our motto “Spes messis in semine” meaning “The hope of the harvest is in the seed.” After junior year ended, we all spent the summer and fall of senior year creating projects that reflected the “Women as Founders” theme. Each project was different, yet they all reflected some aspect of what we learned in class. Nora Cipresi ’15 created a project called Comfortable in Your Own Skin, a presentation on the importance of skin safety and focused on the Dove Movement for Self-Esteem Workshop. Nora worked with Dermatologist Dr. Allison Hanlon ’93 on the 14

Winter/Spring 2015

project, which was presented to the freshman and sophomore health classes. Self-esteem and positive body image were discussed in great detail throughout her project. The kindness and communication Nora witnessed definitely echoed the “Women as Founders” spirit. In early December during Women as Founders Week, Bridget Sykes ’15 organized and moderated an alumnae panel who came and spoke to the Mount’s student body. This panel focused on women’s leadership, life in the workforce and balancing their personal life with their professional life. The panel consisted of seven women; Susan Foley Rocco, mother of Sarah Rocco ’11, Bobbi Tumelty Kelly ’00, Erin McClafferty Erfle ’96, Colleen Osbourne Mook ’90, Kelley Brisbon Hodge, Esq. ’89, Dr. Angela M. Stout ’83, and Christine Macolino ’05. Each woman shared their unique and sage wisdom to an audience full of current Mounties. Christine Macolino and Dr. Angela Stout shared stories and advice about working in male-dominated fields. They explained how the Mount prepared them tremendously for their lives beyond school. Bobbi Kelly kept students laughing and the mood light as she explained how she was able to get a job due to her connection with fellow Mount alumna, Erin Erfle. Panelists went on to say that they knew they could achieve great things because of the ideals and confidence instilled in them at the Mount, calling it a “support system.” As a successful radio host, Susan Rocco has learned the value of taking risks and how it can positively impact your life. All of the women agreed that the main key to success is to not be afraid to take chances. The panel concluded with a question and answer session, then after the presentation was over, many students stayed

to personally meet and talk with panelists. Students and teachers alike loved the panel, saying that there was a palpable connection between the audience and women on stage. The women’s candor was what made the panel a true success. They never claimed their choices to be easy, however they made it clear that the decisions they made affected their lives in the best way. Bridget was so glad that she was a part of Women as Founders Week, especially this presentation panel, which she thought should now become a yearly tradition. In addition to the alumnae panel, Smart Girls Group Founder, Emily Raleigh, presented to students. The Smart Girls Group is an organization and network that allows women to thrive in whatever field they desire and find their “Smart Girl”. Emily Raleigh explained that the group helps unite, empower and inspire ambitious women and girls. “Smart Girls come in many shapes and sizes and we celebrate all of them. Whether her smarts are on the basketball court, in the chemistry lab or in the band, we believe that what truly makes a Smart Girl is how she pursues those smarts,” Raleigh said. She also stressed the importance of building each other up as girls to combat the bullying culture that can be detrimental to a girl’s self-esteem. Raleigh’s message was inspirational and allowed Mounties to see that no matter what field they choose to go into, they will always have a network of strong, smart women supporting them. The week concluded with an “Hour of Code” to educate students on computer science and the possibilities of a career in the field. The Mount’s computer club led the project using their iPads. Students coded a Frozen game while others coded Angry Birds and created apps for the iPad. According to Code.org, “In Pennsylvania, there are 19,866 computer science career opportunities, yet Pennsylvania does not count computer science toward high school graduation credits. In the next six years, computing jobs are expected to grow to over 1,000,000. Computer science degrees are only 2% of the STEM college degrees awarded but of the STEM jobs available, 60% are in computing, and the rest are all in math and sciences.” The “Hour of Code” truly opened up Mounties’ eyes to the possibilities and opportunities they have if they decide to pursue a career or education in computer science. The week proved to be successful and the various speakers and presentations opened Mounties’ eyes to what it means to be a woman and founder. We are truly lucky to attend the Mount and go to a school that inspires and pushes each of us to be the best that we can be!

Alumna Perspective:

Bobbi Tumelty Kelly ’00 How do you feel the panel discussion impacted our students? I was so impressed with how engaged the girls were. Students have become much more “visionary” than I ever was when I was 15, 16, 17, 18 years old. I think this panel gave the students an insight on what they can achieve and what it may take to get there. I think the students also gained an understanding that life is not a series of straight paths to success, rather many twists and turns that you don’t anticipate and your success lies in what you do when presented with a twist in the road. How do you feel the panel discussion impacted you as an alum/panelist? I truly believe that all the panelists gained more inspiration and wisdom from the girls than we imparted. We were there to share our experiences, but the students were the ones who inspired me to be a better leader, mother, friend, and alumna. Their thought-provoking questions and follow up after the discussion was so energizing. I have always enjoyed being tied to the Mount as an alumna and staying connected, but being involved in this panel was by far the most personally rewarding event I have ever attended. It made it clear to me, and I believe to the other panelists, why we give back as alumnae- with our time, talent and treasuresit is not to reminisce or just out of “obligation” but it is to continue to support the tradition of developing amazing women who will go on to be leaders in their own rights. What did you enjoy most about being on the panel? By and far, the thing I enjoyed most about being a part of the panel was connecting with current students. Often I attend events that are not directly involving the girls. It was so empowering to see what the future of the Mount Network looks like. There is so much promise on the horizon! I have had the chance to connect on a one-on-one basis with a couple of students and that in and of itself means the world to me. If there was one student that had an “a-ha” moment during the panel, it was worth every minute.

From the Alumnae Association President Dear Friends of the Mount: “The Mount”…what is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear those words? Having the privilege to speak to some current students and their parents, future students and former parents, educators of Mount Saint Joseph Academy and alumnae, I am proud to share their responses. “Roots, Excellence, Foundation, Home, Confidence, Friendship, Empowerment, Leadership, Unity, Community, Family” were just some of the words that were shared. It is important that we take the time to thank Mother St. John Fournier and the Sisters of Saint Joseph who started this amazing journey back in 1858. What a foundation these wonderful women have given to so many! We have been blessed by their inspiration, their intelligence and their love of God given so generously through so many years. That mission continues to this day with our dedicated staff and faculty. When I reflect on my time at the Mount, I feel privileged. I reflect on the friendships I share and the many memories I have. I am thankful for the lessons I have learned and continue to learn by being integrally connected with the Alumnae Association. The past few months have been productive, busy and filled with fun. Lunch with Santa, Quizzo and Alumnae Day were successful events with memories made and cherished relationships renewed. Celebrauction XXXI: Run for the Roses brought together so many good people who spent a delightful evening having fun and at the same time, helping our funds. Please take a little time to reflect on what our wonderful school means to you. Each and everyone of you are integral to our wellbeing. As a graduate and a mother of two future “Mounties”, I ask you to join with me in supporting the Mount Fund. It is because of your generosity that the work and mission of Mount Saint Joseph Academy has continued in such a way for 157 years. God bless you all for your goodness. “Spes Mesis in Semine.” Gratefully, Megan Osborne Romano ’94

Keeping the Faith:

Lizanne Magarity Pando ’81

by: S. Patricia Evanick ’81

I

have known Lizanne Magarity Pando ’81 since 1977 when we began our freshman year at the Mount. She came to the Mount from Our Mother of Consolation School in Chestnut Hill. “I was raised in a large Catholic family of faith, that was enriched by my Catholic education at OMC and the Mount,” Lizanne said. Her faith spills over into all aspects of her life, including her professional career. Lizanne accepted a job as Director of Marketing and Communications for the World Meeting of Families 2015 Philadelphia last spring. “When this opportunity came along I prayed for the right answer and once I said yes, I haven’t looked back,” she said. Lizanne wasn’t always expecting to have a career rooted in the Catholic faith. After the Mount she went on to attend the University of Delaware where she studied Chemistry and Business. After college she pursued a career in sales at Bell Atlantic and McNeil Pharmaceuticals. She then settled in, working for the family business at Magarity Chevy and Ford for the next 20 years. In 1989 she married her college sweetheart, Jim Pando, and had two beautiful girls, Cyndi and Jenna. Jenna was born with Down’s Syndrome and experienced medical difficulties in her first two years of life. This prompted Lizanne and Jim to start an event to raise funds for Trisomy 21 Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. They have raised well over 2 million dollars for clinical care, research and education for families with Down’s Syndrome through their annual “Buddy Walk” at Villanova University’s Stadium. Prior to joining the World Meeting of Families, Lizanne worked as the Director of Communication for the Miraculous Medal Shrine in Germantown. I was working across the street from the Shrine at the Daughters of Charity when our paths crossed. During our time at the Mount, Lizanne and I were in several classes together and often traveled in the same social circles. It is amazing how close you become with your high school friends that even after years apart you can just pick up where you left off. Our meeting prompted us to get a group of our classmates together regularly and go out to dinner, chat, share laughs and usually close the restaurant down! Lizanne is always smiling, a trait she received from her father, and can be found spending time with her family and working hard to prepare for Pope Francis’s arrival in the fall. “I am truly humbled and honored to be a part of the World Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015.”

I was able to speak with Lizanne and have a Q&A session on what is happening at the World Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015 – September 26-27. Q What is the most exciting part of this event? A Everything! I was going to say the visit of the Holy Father…and that is too! Each day planning our Congress, seeing people come from all over the world, studying our Catechesis on the family and hearing people’s stories of faith are all truly exciting elements of this event. Philadelphia and the United States will never be the same after the visit from Pope Francis. The events planned have the potential to change lives! Q Do you believe that the Congress at the Convention

Center will impact the Philadelphia area?

A This event, started by St. John Paul II and run by

the Pontifical Council of the Vatican, is designed to help strengthen the bonds of families all over the world. This is the eighth World Meeting of Families, the first in the United States. Finding ways to help strengthen families will make our city and world a safer and stronger society. We are seeing large groups from all over the country and the world that want to join us. We are hoping that those within a 120-mile radius will open their homes and welcome these groups through our Host a Family Program.

Q

How do you feel this experience will change your career going forward?

A I don’t know exactly where this experience, or the Lord

and his Mother, will take me, but I feel wherever it is will be filled with faith. I once heard a great statement… “I challenge you to not step through a door that your faith will not fit through.” I strive to live my life that way. mount saint joseph academy
