Fall 2016

Mount Magazine is an official publication of Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Mount Magazine is published three times a year (Winter/Spring, Summer, Fall) for students, alumnae, parents and friends of Mount Saint Joseph Academy.

From the President Friends, On Founders’ Day 2016, I listened to Caitlin Mahon ’17 give a reflection that inspired me and what I wish for you as you read her words. It is with a humble heart that I say, there was nothing left for me to say to the young women except to express my appreciation. It is with profound gratitude and deep joy that she has grasped our mission, and now shares this with you. 2016 Founders’ Day Reflection “When I was in grade school, one of my favorite sayings was, ‘Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.’ Imagine how surprised I was to learn as a freshman that I actually had to select a star, my star. Freshmen, you have made it through your first month of high school and today, you solidify your part in our sisterhood when you choose your star. Welcome, congratulations and believe me, the best is yet to come. Remember to let your heart be your guide. If you’ve never talked to the classmate sitting next to you, say hello. She may end up being your best friend. To my sister and her fellow sophomores, believe it or not, you are almost halfway through your high school years. Cherish the time you spend with one another. Juniors, been there, done that. Yes, junior year is as tough as they say. But you are not alone. Sitting all around you here today are your biggest fans, supporters and cheerleaders. A Mountie never walks alone. My fellow seniors: is this really our last Founders’ Day? Should we be sad, excited, or sick to our stomachs because our college applications aren’t finished? I hope that like me, you have followed your heart, cherished our time together, and rooted for one another. This is the last time we will sit together and gaze at our stars. I wonder how many of us here today have chosen the same star. In the years to come, many new Mounties certainly will. No matter where life takes me, I will always remember which star is mine. I will also remember these stars are what make us unique. After all, no two stars in the universe are identical. But what I will remember foremost is that although we have our own gifts, perspectives, strengths and weaknesses, like the stars on this ceiling, we are united in spirit and purpose. Do you remember what you were thinking when you chose your star? When I chose my star, I remember wondering why the blue surrounding the gold stars looked so bright. Our unity explains why the blue ceiling looks so brilliantly lit against the stars. As long as there is at least one star in the sky, we are never in total darkness. Where there is one star, there is someone on your side, a beacon of light guiding you. When there is light, there is hope for a better tomorrow. On Founders’ Day, my star reminds me that the Sisters of St. Joseph have entrusted me with a responsibility to be that beacon of light that makes the future brighter. Like the stars, Mounties are destined to shine on whatever road to individual success they choose. Every time we walk the halls or enter a classroom, we are all encouraged to recognize and develop our talents. We are empowered to build up our weaknesses until they become our strengths. We can become whatever we dream of becoming. But what makes us glow brilliantly together is how we light the darkness around us, just like how the Sisters of St. Joseph lit up Le Puy. The encouragement and empowerment we receive at the Mount is preparing us to live a life of compassion and service in the name of unity. That life begins anew every morning when we wake up and go to school. I am emboldened by what I learned the day before to deepen the Mount’s sense of community by being more passionate in what I believe, acting with greater compassion, and collaborating more creatively with those around me. It’s telling that overwhelmed underclassman that we have all been in her shoes, we all survive and right now I can help her with whatever she needs. It’s thanking your teachers as you leave a classroom because teaching teenagers day in and day out is not easy. It’s remembering their patience with you when you are tutoring others and feeling frustrated. It’s doing deeds without recognition. It is encouraging others to question your ideas, valuing their opinions and encouraging them to act. It is remembering every day to serve our dear neighbor because when we serve others, there is no longer an ‘us’ and a ‘them, there is only a ‘we.’ It is remembering that the hope of the harvest is in the seed. Most of all, it is remembering that the Mounties here today will light tomorrow’s paths. So as I stand before you on my last Founders’ Day, I leave you with two simple words: DARE TO. Dare to be the light for one another and dare to be the light for someone who aims for the moon but is thrown off course. Mother Saint John Fontbonne dared to, so why not you?” It continues to be an honor to be in your midst and to serve this Mount community. God’s blessings,

Mount Donates $11,000 to St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge Soaking late August rains brought catastrophic flooding to several communities in Louisiana. Among those affected was St. Joseph’s Academy, an all-girls Catholic high school established by the Sisters of St. Joseph, in Baton Rouge. The Mount began a collection for St. Joseph’s Academy and asked students to donate during Opening Liturgy. Donations were also accepted through the Mount’s website.

The response from the Mount community was overwhelming. Because of your generosity, we sent $11,000 to the students, faculty, and staff of St. Joseph’s Academy who have lost their homes, personal belongings, and much more. S. Kathleen Brabson, SSJ, President, says, “In the Constitutions of the Sisters of Saint Joseph there is a line that states, ‘Each day we make a new beginning…’ You have made a ‘new beginning’ possible because of your extraordinary kindness to our dear neighbors in need.”

AP Computer Science Course Debuts at Mount By Margaret Toth, Computer Teacher

AP Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) is a new course at the Mount this year offered by the College Board. The purpose of the course is to attract women and minorities to a field that is currently dominated by men. According to a report conducted by the Conference Board, National Center for Education Statistics, and the College Board as reported on Code.org, in Pennsylvania alone there are 18,072 unfilled jobs in the industry but only 2,820 computer science graduates. To look at it another way, 71 percent of new STEM jobs are in computing, yet only 8 percent of STEM graduates are in Computer Science. In response to that demand, the AP CSP course, taught by Mrs. Margaret Toth, is running on B days. There are 18 students learning seven “Big Ideas” including the Internet and how it works; data and information; creativity; abstraction; algorithms; programming; and global impact. These topics are interwoven with discussions on privacy, security, and how data is actually processed. Coding structures using Snap! (a web-based block coding program) and Python (a programming language) account for 25 percent of the

curriculum. In comparison, the other longstanding AP Computer Science A course consists of 100 percent Java programming. The Mount will be offering a 0.5 credit Java course starting in 2017-2018 for students who want more text-based coding. The AP CSP assessment will be made up of three parts. Individually, each student will complete an “explore task” where she will research and create an artifact about a technology topic and its impact; this will account for 16 percent of her overall score. Then, groups of two will collaborate and create a “performance task” using coding to craft an artifact on a topic of their choosing; this will count for 24 percent of their overall score. Both projects include written parts and a required number of classroom hours to produce them. The final 60 percent of the assessment will come from a 100-question test given on Friday, May 5, 2017. The Mount is committed to enriching STEM education as part of our curriculum. This course offers another vehicle for students to enhance the STEM component of their education. mount saint joseph academy

K ANSAS CITY SERVICE TRIP RESONATES WITH MOUNT STUDENTS By Kristen DiPrinzio

For four days in early June, a group of Mount seniors and juniors spent time reflecting on their faith and serving local communities in Kansas City, Missouri, as part of the second annual CSJ/SSJ Student Leadership Conference. Students from five CSJ/SSJ-sponsored schools in the U.S. attended the trip. The first meeting of its kind was held last year in Chestnut Hill, hosted by the Mount; the tradition continued this year with St. Teresa’s Academy, a CSJ-sponsored high school, hosting.

Mount students were invited to write an essay on why they wanted to be part of the conference. The essays were reviewed by S. Kathleen Brabson, SSJ, President; Dr. Judith Caviston, Principal; Connie D’Angelo, Dean of Students; and Rebecca Gutherman, Campus Minister, who selected students to embark on the journey. Students who attended were Isobel Grogan ’17, Kateri Krause ’17, Kate Mahon ’17, Annie Fowler ’18, Maeve McCormack ’18, Brenna Reilly ’18, Kelly Ryan ’18, and Mady Taylor ’18. Additionally, as part of the exchange program with the St. Joseph School in LePuy France, students Lucas Gauvry and Charlyn Fai’Saudier, also attended with the Mount’s group. Mrs. D’Angelo and Miss Gutherman accompanied the students on the trip.

They do not have family they could go to; Journey House provides an opportunity for the women to prevent relapsing into crime; drug and alcohol abuse; poverty; and homelessness. The group stayed at Avila University, located near St. Teresa’s. S. Phyllis DiFuchia, SSJ, spoke to the students upon arrival and welcomed them. During the next two days, students were split into two groups. One group went to After the Harvest, a hunger relief non-profit organization that partners with the produce industry to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to communities in need in Kansas and Missouri. Strawberry season was over, and there were many fresh, edible strawberries that hadn’t been plucked from the fields. The students harvested and boxed berries and delivered them to local food pantries.

mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph was so special. During the classroom sessions, I enjoyed sharing what our school community does to better the environment and to care for the people around us.”

Fall 2016

“Before the trip, I knew the mission but I didn’t know how to apply it to my daily life,” said Kelly Ryan ’18. “I didn’t fully comprehend the importance of leadership. We learned that ‘leaders create other leaders,’ and now armed with a great experience, we have a responsibility to share the knowledge we gained and stand as models to other students in our school community.”

Breakout groups followed. Administration from each school was required to run a session that fit with the theme of the CSJ/SSJs. The themes were Social Justice and Service to the Dear Neighbor; Leadership vs. Management; Care for God’s Creation; and Us vs. Them. The group rotated so all students had a chance to attend each session.

– Brenna Reilly ’18

The other group visited Journey House, a shortterm residential facility in Kansas City for women who were recently released from prison. The Sisters of St. Joseph started the home in 2015 to assist formerly incarcerated women with life skills, job research, education, healthcare, and rehabilitation, while keeping them off the streets. Many women living at the home were formerly homeless, or were facing homelessness upon their release from prison. 12

The following day, the groups switched. Both days, the group returned to Avila and reconvened for sessions on the history of the CSJ/SSJs. S. Phyllis spoke to the group at length about the importance of Associates carrying on the congregation’s legacy. The students from LePuy offered their perspectives and why it’s important for them to witness the American schools carrying out the mission.

Throughout the trip, each school was responsible for leading

icebreakers, as well as the morning and evening prayer experiences. Each school showed the group a different way to pray. “The students [from other schools] on the trip taught me so much,” said Brenna Reilly ’18. “Learning how we each carried out the mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph was so special. During the classroom sessions, I enjoyed sharing what our school community does to better the environment and to care for the people around us.” “The best part of the experience was knowing that there are other students and colleagues out there sharing the mission,” said Miss Gutherman, “and each person is living out the mission according to their daily lives. There are sacred threads within each of us that connect, and while we have different roles in our schools, there are still similar ways we can live the mission.” On the final day, students spent the afternoon in Kansas City. They attended Mass in the morning, then explored the city on foot in the afternoon. They had lunch, shopped, ate ice cream, and enjoyed each other’s company. Before the trip concluded, the group discussed the importance of strengthening their relationships with the students from France, and ways in which they could share their experiences with the Mount community. After the students returned, they reflected on the stories they heard from other students, particularly about the August floods in Louisiana, which affected some of the students on the trip from St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge. Brenna Reilly first learned about

the floods on Snapchat, after seeing videos and photos of her friend’s mother’s office halfway submerged in water. She then learned that her friend’s family was moving in with her aunt, an hour away from St. Joseph’s. Brenna contracted Miss Gutherman and asked if there was anything the Mount could do to help the St. Joseph’s students. The group who attended the conference held meetings and decided a donation was the best option. (read more about this on page 8.) “Hearing the announcement that [the Mount] had raised $11,000 was so surreal,” Brenna said. “It is different collecting donations when you can put real faces to the people you are helping. In that moment, all I saw were the faces of Juliet, Jade, Lexi, Abigail, Fran, Hannah, and Tori, our friends from Baton Rouge.” The girls discussed the importance of strengthening their relationships with the students from France, and ways in which they could share their experiences with the Mount community. In addition to the collections for St. Joseph’s Academy, one of the ways the girls did this was presenting a recap of the trip during a faculty and staff in-service and recreating one of the group activities they did back in Kansas City. The trip helped forge a meaningful bond among Mounties, the students who attended, and the communities and individuals that they met during the trip. “We all have silent similarities and burdens that we carry,” said Miss Gutherman, “and we are each other’s dear neighbors. The same can be said about the people we serve. They’re not ‘them,’ they’re ‘us.’ We are all one.”

DARE TO

serve

By Kristen DiPrinzio and Sharon Antonacio (mother of Cathryn ’18)

The Mount community is DARING TO make new strides in professions across the globe. In this issue, we focus on women who have DARED TO serve, both in their communities and beyond. These women have dedicated their time and careers to helping others, and are true examples of “serving the dear neighbor.”

Genevieve Noderer Lynch ’91 Director of Individual and Corporate Giving, Vetri Community Partnership

Genevieve Noderer Lynch ’91 wakes up every morning and heads to a job where she helps thousands of local children. As Director of Individual and Corporate Giving, she is responsible for raising funds for Vetri Community Partnership (VCP), a non-profit organization that empowers children and families through fresh food, experiences, and education. Their roster of programs includes Eatiquette, a healthy, from-scratch school lunch program that meets the strict guidelines of the National School Lunch Program; My Daughter’s Kitchen, partnered with The Philadelphia Inquirer, where a corps of volunteers in Philadelphia and Camden work with children in grades 5 to 7 to teach them how to cook; Mobile Teaching Kitchen, a truck that brings hands-on cooking demonstrations to farmers’ markets, schools and communities to teach people how to prepare healthy meals; and Vetri Cooking Lab, a new STEM-based afterschool cooking initiative. Founders and board members chef Marc Vetri and business partner Jeff Benjamin are involved in the vision of Vetri Community Partnership. Marc and Jeff are owners of famed Vetri Ristorante, and CEO and COO of the popular Philadelphia restaurants Vetri, Osteria, Amis, Alla Spina, Pizzeria Vetri, and Lo Spiedo, which were acquired by Urban Outfitters, Inc. in 2015. Genevieve spends the majority of her time planning and soliciting sponsorships for VCP’s major fundraiser, the Great Chefs Event, now in its 12th year. It benefits Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and Vetri Community Partnership. The event, held at Urban Outfitters’ headquarters in South Philadelphia and attended by 1,200 guests, raises around $350,000 for each of the organizations. Chef Vetri personally invites 40 chefs from across the country and abroad to join him for a tasting event (next year’s date is June 13, 2017). Genevieve balances the planning with potential donor meetings and targeting 14

Fall 2016

campaign fundraising goals. For the second half of the year, she focuses on year-end fundraising goals and keeping donors engaged. Although her job is fast-paced, Genevieve says the reward comes in knowing that her efforts are benefiting children every day. “The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that the money we raise goes to programs that really make a difference in a child’s life,” Genevieve says. “I know that I am helping my colleagues provide amazing food to kids that deserve a good meal.” Part of Genevieve’s fundraising efforts also occurs tableside in Vetri Family restaurants. When dining at any Vetri Family restaurant, each guest has the opportunity to make a donation directly to VCP, which is then matched 100 percent by the restaurant. Genevieve works closely with the managers and staff at the restaurants to keep them informed and excited about this fundraising aspect. Genevieve found her way into Vetri Community Partners by fate. After a career in education with positions at Chestnut Hill College, her alma mater, and the School District of Philadelphia, she joined the nonprofit Catholic School Development Program as a consultant (where she worked with Greg Geruson, parent of Claire ‘09, Teresa ‘11, and Catherine ’15). It was there that she discovered she could combine her love of meeting people and sharing the things that are important to her: education, children, and service. After a few years, she stopped working full-time to care for her daughter, Caroline. Three years ago, she heard about the position at VCP through a friend. She was hired as a Development Assistant and grew with the organization. “I was educated by the Sisters of St. Joseph for most of my 16 years in school,” Genevieve says. “My parents, along with the Sisters of St. Joseph, have guided me through my entire life.”

Erin MacMahon ’18 Mount student

Most teenagers spend their summer breaks at the closest beach, basking in the sunshine at the local pool, or working part-time jobs. Not Erin MacMahon ’18: she spent her summer break in Costa Rica on a service trip. Erin, who spent previous years as a summer camp counselor, loves working with kids and giving back, but decided to do something different last summer. She heard from friends about Rein Teen Tours, an organization that takes groups from across America on service trips both within the U.S. and abroad. Although Erin did not know any of the other 35 teenagers going on the trip, she signed up for the 26-day journey because she didn’t want a typical summer. The first two weeks in Costa Rica were spent volunteering. Rein offered different service opportunities, and Erin was lucky enough to be assigned to her first choice: serving at La Fortuna Orphanage Costa Rica. The group painted murals and beautified the orphanage every morning, and played with the children during the afternoon. There were approximately 20 children living at the residence when Erin visited, ranging in age from two months to 12 years. The children spoke Spanish, and although Erin did not, she had no trouble communicating with them; they shared the universal language of laughter. In particular, Erin remembers one child who was quite shy during the group’s first visits. By the time the two weeks had passed, he was running into Erin’s arms and hugging her on a daily basis. “The kids loved us,” Erin said, “and we loved them.” For safety reasons, the orphanage staff (who the children referred to as “tias”—the Spanish word for “aunt”) did not divulge details of how each child ended up at the orphanage. But they did say, in general, the children were brought to the residence due to problems within the family, or were staying at the orphanage temporarily until the parents were able to provide for the child financially. “I met some of my closest friends on that trip,” Erin said. “It was amazing that we got to bond over that experience, and we can talk about that forever.” While the group was based in the La Fortuna area for the first two weeks, they traveled around Costa Rica for the final 12 days, and participated in adventures like repelling off of a waterfall; ziplining; going whitewater rafting; and visiting hot springs. “You take your life for granted, but when you see these kids who have barely anything and are still so thankful for the little things, it does make you appreciate your life,” Erin said. “I realize how fortunate I am, and that the small things in life can bring such happiness.”

Ava Selya ’07 Dentist, Mary’s Center, Washington, D.C.

On a typical day at work, Ava Selya ’07 can be found treating dental issues and showing patients how to care for their oral health. She is a dentist at Mary’s Center, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that provides health care, education, and social services. The site in which she works is located on Georgia Avenue in the city’s Petworth neighborhood. As a biology major at Temple University, Ava knew she wanted to pursue a career in health care, but was unsure about which field to choose. It wasn’t until she shadowed dentists and dental students that she decided to apply to dental school. “I respected how these men and women were able to use a unique mix of art and science to improve the patient’s quality of life, and I began to think that dentistry would be a good fit for me, too,” Ava says. She continued her studies at Temple’s Kornberg School of Dentistry, earning a doctorate of dental medicine in 2015. The first time Ava heard about Mary’s Center was in dental school. A representative from the center (who is now Ava’s boss) traveled to Temple to give a presentation on working in the public health sector, and suggested she visit the D.C. clinic. She took him up on his offer. When she arrived, Ava was immediately struck by how caring and compassionate the staff was, and how grateful the patients were for the care they received. What started as a site visit led to an interview, and a few months later, Ava received a contract. The biggest challenge in her line of work is being able to meet the needs of every patient, as most have never received dental care in their lives. The most rewarding aspect of her job can be summed up in two words: thank you. “Dentistry can be unpleasant at times, but when the patient goes out of their way at the end of the appointment to let me know how appreciative they are for the care received, I am reminded of why I chose to go into the field,” Ava says. Ava chose public health as a career because she enjoys helping others, and each day, she is able to provide diagnostic, preventative, and restorative care to a population that may not be able to receive it otherwise. “It has always been a belief of mine that every person be treated with kindness and respect,” Ava says.

Kathleen Pickard Busillo ’78, LMT, CLT Massage Therapist

While studying for her B.F.A. in illustration at the University of the Arts, Kathleen (Kathy) Pickard Busillo ’78 did not yet know what lie ahead, but knew she wanted and needed to be of service to others. She would accomplish that through massage therapy, which would lead her to far-flung locales such as Vietnam. Kathy earned a certification from Harrisburg Area Community College in 2013, and a certification in lymphatic therapy in 2016. Witnessing several family members undergoing cancer treatment inspired her to continue her education in oncology massage, which helps patients cope in the midst of cancer treatment and helps them relax and feel better. After becoming involved in a group called Buds to Blossoms, a volunteer pediatric massage organization, Kathy became interested in that particular type of massage. When Buds to Blossoms planned a three-week service trip to Vietnam last summer, Kathy jumped at the chance to go. She calls the trip life-changing, as its main goal was to provide relief to children being treated for HIV/ AIDS, or who were disabled and/or bedridden. Upon arrival in Vietnam, Kathy says that the volunteers were met with smiles and enthusiasm from the children. Certain children would seek out extra time with specific volunteers, forging bonds in a short period of time. “There were connections on many levels. It did not matter whether the children were disabled, understood or spoke English, or were HIV/AIDS patients. Even the most challenged children understood the concept of getting 100 percent from each volunteer who worked with them,” Kathy said. The children benefitted from Kathy’s expansive knowledge of pediatric massage, and their caregivers saw improvement in the children’s eating habits, growth, and wellbeing. It was in Vietnam that Kathy realized pediatric massage was her calling as well as her passion. In this role, Kathy gets to help others while simultaneously learning from them. “One never runs out of anything to learn, and every day is different,” says Kathy. One important lesson learned after traveling to Vietnam was the abundance in the typical American household. She says that in western society, we have far more than we need to actually live. Many Vietnamese people have little to nothing, yet have found happiness. That was an eye-opener for Kathy. “Giving my time, skills, patience, and love are things that are in each of us,” Kathy says, “yet so many don’t see that, nor do they understand that the most simple [ways] of giving—a smile or holding a hand—can mean the entire world to someone.” Kathy will be traveling to Kathmandu, Nepal in April 2017 with the same group to again practice pediatric massage on underserved children. mount saint joseph academy

Thank you to everyone who DARED TO participate in the 2015-2016 Mount Fund campaign! Because of your generosity, we were able to exceed our goal last year…which means we are DARING TO set the bar even higher this year. Last year, the Mount Fund was used to update lighting for the stage in the auditorium; refinish the floor in the gym; improve many of the safety systems throughout the school; and so much more. This year, the fund will be even more crucial as we continue to stay on the leading edge of technology and innovation in our classrooms. Additionally, the Mount Fund will be used to support more than 50 different extracurricular activities, athletic teams and clubs in which the girls may participate. It will also be used on projects such as creating new gathering spaces to promote collaboration and study, and new experiential learning opportunities. The 2016-2017 Mount Fund campaign began on July 1, 2016 and runs through June 30, 2017. We hope all of you will DARE TO invest in our Mounties and DARE TO be a part of their experience this year through your support. To make your Mount Fund gift, please visit www.msjacad.org/giving or call the Development Office at 215-233-1859. All gifts are tax-deductible, and gifts made before December 31, 2016 are credited to 2016. Thank you for supporting the Mount Fund !

EITC&OSTC TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS What is it?

How does it work?

The Educational Improvement Tax Credit and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit are Pennsylvania programs that allow businesses that pay applicable taxes to redirect their tax dollars to support the Mount’s financial aid program.

Businesses interested in applying for ETIC/OSTC fill out a simple, one-page application that can be found on www.newpa.com. You can apply for one or two years. Upon approval for a one-year commitment, you will receive a tax credit of 75% of your contribution. For two years, you will receive a tax credit for 90% of your contribution.

You then have 60 days to make your gift to the Mount in one of these ways: Mount Saint Joseph Academy Scholarship Fund directly Henkels Foundation, with a designation to Mount Saint Joseph Academy Business Leadership Organized for Catholic Schools (BLOCS), with a designation to Mount Saint Joseph Academy. The remaining percentage that is not included in the tax credit may be claimed as a charitable donation on your federal tax return.

Who can apply?   

Corporate Net Income Capital Stock Franchise Personal Income

  

Businesses in Pennsylvania that pay the following taxes:

Bank and Trust Company Shares Title Insurance Companies Shares Insurance Premiums

  

Mutual Thrift Institutions Malt Beverage Pass-through Entities

Why is this support important to the Mount?

All money designated to the Mount from EITC/OSTC is applied to financial aid. Currently, 29% of students at the Mount receive some sort of financial aid and that number grows annually.

This level of financial support would not be possible without EITC/OSTC.

For more details on EITC/OSTC, including deadlines, go to www.msjacad.org/give or www.newpa.org. 18

From the Alumnae Association President Dear Friends of MSJA: A new school year…a time for new beginnings, new friendships, and new memories. It is also a time to reflect upon our lives in a meaningful way. As students enter the campus each day, they are working diligently to shape themselves into confident young women who wish to be leaders in our communities and in our world. In my role as Alumnae Board President, I challenge myself to work with others to foster relationships and strengthen our Mount Alumnae Association. It is important that every young woman who attends Mount Saint Joseph Academy understands that she is an integral part of the 6,194-member worldwide network of alumnae. We must carry our message proudly whether it be through mail, Facebook, Google, Instagram, email, or face-to-face contact. Our actions, our demeanor, and our lives speak volumes of our heritage.

In order to keep our Mount Alumnae community thriving, there are many people who work behind the scenes in various ways. Recently, the hard work of alumnae has been witnessed at our Golden Girls Luncheon that was filled with laughter and many fun recollections. Green Valley Country Club was the scene where golfers, benefactors, and volunteers enjoyed one another at the annual Golf Outing. The Founders’ Day celebration in October was the perfect time to recall the wonderful Sisters of St. Joseph who have sown the seeds into so many of our lives. Our Open House for prospective students was held on October 16th. We were blessed to have so many of our alumnae, parents, administrators, and students welcome prospective young women and their families. On October 22, 2016, many participated in our Third Annual “Miles of Magic 5K,” which raises money for the Stephanie Leonards Roman Scholarship. The year has been filled and we continue to be blessed by this wonderful gift, our Mount Alumnae Association. I look forward to seeing you at the various events in the remainder of 2016 and in 2017. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your President. I so appreciate your continuing support. Think hard about how we can partner to strengthen and grow our association. I look with excitement as I go into my final year as your President. May God continue to bless you and those you love with good health and much happiness.

Golden Girls Luncheon The legacy of sisterhood at the Mount is one that spans decades. This strong tradition lives on in many ways, one of which is through the annual Golden Girls Luncheon, where alumnae who graduated from the Mount 50 or more years ago reconnect over lunch. The 17th Annual Golden Girls Luncheon took place Friday, September 9, 2016 at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania. More than 105 alumnae attended. The Mount is proud of the strong ties in our alumnae community, especially ones that endure for 50 years and more!

Anne (Nancy) Meaney Phillips ’58 is enjoying retirement with family, including six grandchildren, and friends. Her oldest grandchildren, twins Anne and Thomas, started high school in September. Where did that time go?! She vacationed in Naples, Florida in March and saw some dear friends. She prays that the good Lord will continue to bless them!

1960s Margaret Anne Norrett Hughes ’60 is keeping busy with her husband, John; three adult children and their families (she is Memom to five grandchildren); and sports, all while working as a nurse for two orthopedic surgeons in Malvern, PA.

Pamela Smith Grimme ’50 and husband, Don, walked the Camino Del Santingo (75 miles) in September 2014 in thanksgiving for their long life together with prayers that their children and grandchildren would be similarly blessed. In March 2016, she passed her certification to become a Pharmacy Tech and help people without insurance enter a program with a pharmaceutical company that will supply them with their medication free of cost. How rewarding it is to be able to help people. Don’t ever let someone tell you, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks;” she’s proof you can. Judith Pierson Rowe ’63 and husband, Larry, have moved permanently to their cottage on Oquaga Lake in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in New York. They spend two months in the winter in Naples, Florida. They are blessed to have three daughters, son-in-laws, and eight grandchildren, all living in New York.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 “On the education of women largely depends the future of society” mount saint joseph academy

27

From the Chair of the Board of Directors

Dear Friends, As I begin my term as Chair of the Board of Directors for Mount Saint Joseph Academy, I want to thank my predecessor, Jim Welsh, for his years of dedication to the Mount in this role. His leadership of the board was exceptional and I look forward to carrying the torch forward. It is my pleasure to present the 2015-2016 Annual Report of Gifts. This report celebrates the most successful year of the Mount Fund, which raised an all-time high of $502,529 and surpassed its goal by over $75,000. This impressive achievement is due to the generosity of the members of the Mount community who are listed in the pages that follow, and to the hard work and dedication of the Mount Development team, and the Development Committee which was led by Cyndy Strolle ’71. Another record for last year was the number of Mount students who received either scholarship/grant awards or financial aid packages – also made possible by the generous support of Mount community. Thanks to private donations as well as EITC and OSTC designations, and the efforts of all the volunteers who helped coordinate the 23rd Annual Golf Classic and the Annual Miles of Magic 5k, 24 percent of Mounties in the 2015-2016 academic year received financial assistance of some sort. Additionally, I’d like to recognize the volunteers who helped execute key events such as the Mount Runway Fashion Show and Celebrauction XXXII – Celebrate the Magic of the Mount. Both of these events take countless hours of planning and immeasurable dedication and commitment to our girls. I don’t know where would be without our amazing parent and alumnae volunteers. To our Parents Association and Gold Key members, I express my gratitude for your work on activities such as the Freshmen Tea and Open House. These are pivotal events for making our new families feel welcome and bolstering our admissions outreach. Many thanks also to all the individuals and families who promoted the Open House with lawn signs and car magnets. I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to recognize our Alumnae Class Agents and the work they did to help with reunion, with the Mount Fund and with keeping the members of their class connected to each other and the Mount. This effort is a labor of love and one that is deeply appreciated. Lastly, I would like to thank all of the Mount faculty, administration and staff colleagues who, under the leadership of Sister Kathleen Brabson and Dr. Judith Caviston, spend their days ensuring that each Mount student is able to optimally capitalize on her time at the Mount. In addition, I applaud and thank my fellow Board members, members of the Board committees and the members of the Alumnae Board for their tireless efforts on behalf of the Mount. I look forward to the coming year with gratitude for everyone who helped make last year such a success. May our many accomplishments set the foundation for an even brighter future! Best, Robbie Brennan Hain Chair, Board of Directors

“We believe in the mission and spirit of

the Mount. Our daughters are developing into strong, confident young women who have voices and opinions of their own. We are very fortunate to be able to send our daughters to the Mount, so we’re happy to help other girls experience the same wonderful opportunities that a Mount education provides.” – David & Karen McGettigan, parents of Allison ’17 and Megan ’19

“I am fortunate to witness

the Mount Fund at work on a daily basis at school. In my experience both as a teacher and choreographer for the fall musical, I have seen our students benefit from our rich resources made possible by the generosity of those who donate. In the classroom, these resources enhance our girls’ ability to become leaders and innovators. On stage, your donations are visible through our vibrant Fine Arts program and our ability to provide the girls with an exceptional holistic education rooted in the mission of the Mount.” – Kathleen Ochs, teacher, Mount Saint Joseph Academy

“I remember the moment as if it were yesterday:

my eighth-grade self, clutching the kitchen phone in my hand, listening to S. Mary Dacey tell me that I had received an academic scholarship to the Mount. Given that I was switching from public school to private, the financial aid significantly lightened my family’s load, and my gratitude deepened with each passing year of rigorous academics, passionforming extracurriculars, and deep friendships that support me to this day. That’s why I contribute to the Mount Fund – to pay the gift forward, year after year – so students from all walks of life can reap the benefits of a Mount education and grow into dynamic, engaged women.” – Julia Rocchi ’01 mount saint joseph academy

“The Mount provided our daughters with an

excellent education, but it went far beyond the classroom. The Mount environment challenges young women to achieve their personal best; it is a place where confidence is built and compassion is a core value. It is a place where lifelong friendships are born. As our daughters progress through their academic careers, enter into their professional lives and remain active in community service, our appreciation for the Mount deepens. Our participation in the Mount Fund is a statement of gratitude for what the Mount gave our daughters and an investment toward the education of other promising young women who have the potential to be leaders in their chosen fields.”

Sister Claire Helene Society The Sister Claire Helene Society has been established to honor those alumnae and friends of Mount Saint Joseph Academy who have remembered the Mount with a planned gift or bequest. These gifts become a permanent part of the Endowment, providing a source of income upon which the school can depend and use for for years to come. The Society is named in loving memory of a beloved Latin, religion and French teacher who inspired two generations of Mount alumnae.

For more information about the Sister Claire Helene Society, please contact Jill Gregori, Director of Development, at (251) 233-1859 or at jgregori@msjacad.org.
