from the

President

Dear friends, Last spring, I met with all the seniors in small groups to get their take on what it was like for them during their four years at the Mount, and what makes the Mount different. After a few minutes, hands started to go up, and they found their voice. A number of students spoke about the relationships they formed, and the hope that these friendships would endure. Fast forward to September, when we welcomed the Class of 2021 to join the legacy of women united in the bonds of “unity and service to the dear neighbor in a spirit of gentle boldness.” Our colleagues worked conscientiously to ensure a smooth transition from elementary to high school life with Freshman Orientation, culminating in the “Amazing Race” throughout the Mount; thus the bonding began with our new young women. Certainly, the devastating natural disasters brought the entire Mount community together to assist in the relief efforts along the Gulf, Caribbean and Puerto Rico. We are never better than when we are “one with” each other, and with those most in need. I am filled with gratitude to report that we sent more than ten thousand dollars to Catholic Charities USA for relief efforts. In the spirit of Ignatius and Francis de Sales, whose spirituality pervades our SSJ spirit and mission, our young women are intentionally oriented toward an excellence tempered by gentleness, peace and joy. This spirituality is strengthened within our seniors on their Unitas retreat experience, where they have the opportunity to deepen their relationship with God, self and others. The first of four retreats was held the first week of October. You can read more about the Mount retreat program and how it impacts our young women on page 14. Our Open House was a great success, and the time for the Mount community to come together to put on the best face of the Mount. The spirit and deep pride of our parents, alumnae, faculty and staff connects to form the bonds of friendship and caring that is the DNA of the Mount. Another wonderful Founders’ Day was celebrated with our little pilgrimage to the Motherhouse chapel and the celebration of the liturgy that unites our hearts and minds in the Spirit. Each year, the students are invited to choose a star from the ceiling of the chapel, and to ponder how much we need them to partner with us in advancing our mission. Leadership Rooted in Gentle Courage and Compassion is our theme for the year; it could not be a better time for all of us to live the compassion of God in our broken world. I was happy to see many of our alumnae united via social media to celebrate their memories, and to wish our current students the best. This edition of Mount Magazine is very full, as it includes our Mount Fund gifts from 2016-17. Our success depends on you who believe in us and continue to keep the Mount high on your list of philanthropy. We could not do what we do without you and I am deeply grateful. As you read through this magazine, I hope you will find that it appeals to many across the alumnae and current Mount spectrum. Please, keep in mind how our belief in the spirit of our early Founders resides in each of our hearts. Let us continue to inspire each other to live the gentle courage and compassion of our sisters and early partners in mission. Blessings,

Sister Kathleen Brabson, SSJ President

Sarah Hodgson ’18, 2017 recipient of the M. Eileen McGill Meko ‘60 Music Scholarship, was selected to attend the one-week intensive Broadway Artists Alliance (BAA) program in New York City last summer. Sarah was selected through an audition process. During the workshop, she received professional training from a Tony Award winner, attended classes taught by Broadway Alliance Artists, worked individually with a BAA coach, and performed in a showcase for Broadway industry professionals. Pictured: Sarah Hodgson ’18 (right) with M. Eileen McGill Meko ’60, Dr. Judith Caviston (Principal), and S. Kathleen Brabson, SSJ (President). Over the summer, the Mount redesigned the library to allow for more collaborative work and student gathering spaces. The concept was designed by Ellen Rosa-Bian Cericola ’82, who incorporated large high-top tables atop ledges for students to store their bags, new couchstyle seating, and movable tables that can double as seating. New seating, carpeting, and flooring was installed in the Mount’s Fournier Auditorium over the summer. Fontbonne also got a new look, with updated furniture and more spaces for students to gather and study. The Firebirds, the Mount’s robotics team, hosted the 8th annual GirlPower event at the Mount in September. The event is an FRC off-season competition; all schools participating were required to have an all-girls drive team. The goal of the event is to give girls exposure to STEM fields. Student Leadership Council Induction took place on September 8, immediately following Opening Liturgy. New class officers and student council members were officially installed during the ceremony.

Katie Edling ’19 traveled to Sarasota, Florida, to compete in the World Rowing Championship’s Youth Regional Challenge in September. Edling rowed bow seat in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Women’s 1st Eight, which raced against five other regional all-star boats from across the country. The Mid-Atlantic Region placed 2nd in qualifications to advance to the finals. In the grand finals, Katie’s Mid-Atlantic Region Women’s A 8+ finished 2nd overall, which was the best finish of any of the MidAtlantic crews. The Mount joined the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in supporting relief efforts for victims of recent hurricanes in the U.S. and Caribbean. Donations from students, faculty, and staff were collected during Opening Liturgy on September 8. Donations were also accepted for two weeks through the Mount’s website. Because of your generosity, we raised more than $10,150, which was sent to Catholic Charities USA, who will disburse it to victims. Thank you for your generosity and your commitment to the Mount’s mission of “serving the dear neighbor.”

Mount Crew Boathouse Renovations Unveiled The Mount Crew Boathouse addition had its soft opening this fall. The addition replaces old storage space, and gives the team their own locker, meeting, and storage facilities on the Hines Rowing Center campus. The new space has been a long time in the making and includes cubbies for team equipment, a place to have “boat talks” in which rowers assess performances and strategize, as well as a much-needed new restroom! As the work continues to make a worldclass facility for our National Championship winning team, please reach out to the coaching staff if you would like a tour of our updated space. And as always, see you on the river!

Spotlight on The A rts

Two Mount students with a passion for vocal arts traveled last summer to attend programs that expanded their vocal repertoires and opened their eyes to new opportunities in the arts.

Audrey Trullinger travels to Indiana to attend

Songbook Academy Audrey Trullinger ’18 loves to sing. She spent part of her summer in good company, surrounded by students from across the country who share her same passion, at The Songbook Academy. This is the second consecutive year that Audrey was selected for the program. The Songbook Academy is a branch of the Great American Songbook Foundation, a non-profit founded by Grammy winner, singer, pianist, and entertainer Michael Feinstein. The foundation is dedicated to preserving and promoting the influential popular American songs and jazz standards from the early 20th century. The Academy is a unique week-long summer intensive for high school singers with an interest in the music of the Great American Songbook. Admission to the academy is highly competitive. This year, more than 300 students from across the U.S. auditioned. Only 40 students were selected; Audrey was one of them. Audrey, whose passion is musical theater, flew to Indianapolis, where she and the other students attending stayed in newly refurbished dorms at Butler University. Her days were spent at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana, home of the Palladium Concert Hall. Each student was assigned a music director and mentor, all of whom were professionals in the music industry – musicians, singers, songwriters, entertainers, and more. Audrey attended a master class each morning, and then went to the Palladium to work with her music director. She prepared two songs to sing before a panel of judges at the end of the week, and worked closely with her music director and mentor to perfect her technique throughout the week. One of the master classes she attended was led by Eden Espinosa, a singer known for her performance as Elphaba in the Broadway, San Francisco, and Los Angeles productions of the musical Wicked.

Each of the students performed at the showcase on Thursday before a panel of judges. Audrey earned a solo performance that night. Ten people were selected to perform at the final performance on Friday night. Audrey says she was thrilled to sing before judges such as Grammy-winning singer Sylvia McNair, TV producer Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives), and more musical luminaries. After her performance, she was able to get feedback from the judges, which Audrey says was extremely helpful. “One of the key points of feedback that was given to me by Marc Cherry was, ‘Choose a song that embodies you. Your voice is amazing, we can see that no matter what. Now, we just want to see you.’ I think that relates well to the things I learned there,” she says. Audrey says she learned some valuable advice during the week, but the thing that resonated most was a bit unexpected for her: the subtle differences in performing as a solo artist and performing to an audience as a character.

“I used to watch her on YouTube all the time because I love Wicked. I was starstruck,” Audrey says.

“When I attended this program last year, I went into it thinking, ‘I’m performing,’ but that’s not really what you’re doing,” Audrey says. “You’re putting forward what the composer was trying to convey through the music, and make an intimate connection with the audience. That’s so much different than what I do all the time.”

After Audrey performed for her, Eden told her she has a big voice that she cannot be afraid to use. She gave Audrey tips on how to best utilize and project her voice to make the most of it.

She says being able to work with professionals such as a cabaret singer and a Broadway singer/actress greatly helped her refine her own vocal technique.

“Understanding the lyrics and connecting with the audience helps with acting and musical theater,” Audrey says. “Now I know how to make something more genuine. I’m actually embodying myself in the music.” Audrey is cast as Cosette in the Mount’s fall production of Les Misérables. She also is a member of Glee Club and Sweet Madelines, is student manager of the Magic Shoppe, and takes private acting and voice lessons every week. She hopes to forge a career in musical theater and plans to study it in college. Audrey with Michael Feinstein mount saint joseph academy

Sofia Farrell’s

[Summer in I taly] Studying Oper a

When most Mount students think of their summer vacation, they are flooded with memories of lazy, sun-soaked beach days. When Sofia Farrell ’19 thinks of vacation, singing an aria with voice students from all over the world comes to mind. This past July, she spent four weeks in Florence, Italy after being selected to study voice in the Bel Canto Institute’s Summer Vocal Program. To be considered, she had to submit recordings of herself singing two Italian arias, as well as a bio and personal recommendations. As part of the program, Sofia studied musical aspects of opera to enhance her vocal technique, and was immersed in historical and cultural elements that influenced the genre. Participants received vocal lessons from worldrenowned coaches and performance classes on operatic style and tradition. Additionally, she received Italian language classes through La Scuola Leonardo da Vinci. The program culminated in two concert performances in public venues in Florence. Sofia stayed with an Italian host, Sandra, who she says spoke little English, yet treated her like family. “I felt right at home,” Sofia says. She started each day at 6:30 a.m., studying the Italian language and diction. She took private voice lessons with coaches from Florence and other parts of the world. Her days ended at 8 p.m. with a delicious two-course dinner prepared by Sandra. After dinner, Sandra would play Italian opera music, American jazz and even

a little bit of Elvis! It was an experience Sofia cherishes; she hopes to return to visit Sandra someday soon. Sofia’s trip centered on a performance of “Vittoria, Vittoria” by Giacomo Carissimi and “Se a te d’interno scherza” by Gaetano Donizetti in the Auditorium dell’ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze. The performers dressed in gowns and suits for the evening performance. The striking venue served as a gorgeous backdrop for the event: the walls of the auditorium were rich with historic art and a pipe organ was located behind the stage. “The best part of my trip was being surrounded by beautiful music every day, as well as people that were also studying music from many different parts of the world,” Sofia says. Having grown up listening to many different genres of music, Sofia started voice lessons at age 8 and has never looked back. “Music is truly a universal language. This summer, I was able to make such strong connections with people from all over the world because of our love of music.” Her time at the Mount has helped her reach her musical aspirations through her strong work ethic and dedication - attributes that will serve her well in the years to come. At the Mount, Sofia expands her vocal practice by participating in Glee Club, Sweet Madelines and recently performed in Mount productions of Footloose and Nice Work if You Can Get It. DARE TO

Live the Mission

CARRYING THE MOUNT

to Baltimore

Dona Schmidt ’15 and Maddie Ferrero ’16 share how experiencing Mount retreats moved them to become involved in retreat planning at Loyola University Maryland. Retreats are an integral part of the Mount experience. One of the many ways the mission and charism of the Sisters of Saint Joseph are imbued into education and student life at the Academy is through a strong retreat program. Dona Schmidt ’15 and Maddie Ferrero ’16 are students at Loyola University Maryland, where they plan and participate in retreats. Their experience in attending retreats while at the Mount inspired them to continue their involvement in college, and now they both play an active role in many of the retreats that Loyola hosts. At the Mount, students embark on a different retreat experience each year. Freshmen attend a mission immersion retreat at the end of their first month. Retreat is held at the SSJ Motherhouse at Chestnut Hill College. During retreat, students visit the Heritage Room, the Chapel, and attend presentations on the main pillars of the charism of the SSJs: service to the dear neighbor, heritage and her-story, and unity and reconciliation. Students gather in small and large groups as they learn about the importance of being agents of transformation while furthering the mission. Sophomores learn the importance of “serving the dear neighbor” with a morning of service at various locations. They are accompanied by senior student leaders and faculty members. After lunch, students return to participate in small group discussions concerning their day, and how they can continue service at school and at home. Junior Retreat puts into action the unity and reconciliation piece of the SSJs’ charism. Juniors spend a full day at Chestnut Hill College and the SSJ Motherhouse, where they share in group bonding experiences and small group discussions. Senior leaders give reflections on unity and reconciliation. Seniors embark on the UNITAS retreat at St. Raphaela Center in Haverford, Pennsylvania. Retreat is held on four different weekends so that the entire senior class participates by the end of the year. A team of six 14

Fall 2017

senior leaders and six adult leaders guide students through the days. This retreat merges the separate pieces of the charism again through various reflections, and focuses on love of God, love of neighbor, and love of self. Loyola, a Jesuit university, offers several retreat experiences that incorporate elements of Ignatian spirituality. All retreats are hosted at the Loyola University Retreat Center located in Flintstone, in the mountains of western Maryland (about two and a half hours from Loyola’s Baltimore campus). As with planning any big event, there are both challenges and rewards intertwined in the process. Both women say, due to their Mount retreat experiences, they are well-equipped to face whatever hurdles they may encounter as the retreats take shape. The biggest obstacle Dona and Maddie face is getting people to sign up for retreats. As Dona points out, being required to attend retreats, as Mount students are, is very different from having the choice to attend. At Loyola, retreats are optional, and students are able to sign up through an application form on the University’s Campus Ministry website. Dona and Maddie have also learned to be flexible with scheduling, as the planning process involves many moving parts, particularly when it comes to student availability. Maddie says that coordinating schedules can get complicated, partly because many Loyola students are involved in several different clubs and activities, and have classes throughout the day and evening. “Being able to balance schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and a social life, plus making time to write your reflection and go to meetings is a challenge,” Dona says. Maintaining a welcoming atmosphere is one of the most important aspects of planning. Both keep inclusivity in her mind throughout the planning process. They try to design retreats so that all participants—particularly

MISSION

and Beyond

THROUGH RETREATS

those who are shy—feel at ease, and are encouraged to embark on selfreflection. For Maddie, one of the tasks that takes the most time and thought is writing the reflection she gives at each retreat. The reflections are one of the most important and vulnerable aspects of the retreat, and she says that she chooses her words carefully and spends a good deal of time deciding on a topic. She is well-versed in these reflections from her Mount retreats. All retreat leaders give a reflection on a variety of topics that fall under love of God, love of neighbor, and love of self. The reflections weave in personal experience as well as Biblical references, prayer topics, and aspects of the SSJ charism. “It’s challenging to pick what you want your reflection to encompass and finding the right words to tell the retreatants,” she says. Maddie says the Mount’s Unitas retreat was the highlight of her high school years, and one of the main reasons she knew she wanted to be involved with retreats in college. She credits Rebecca Gutherman (known to the students as “Miss G”) of the Mount’s Campus Ministry department and her impeccable organization for making the retreats such a moving experience. Maddie says that prior to the retreats, Miss Gutherman gives students a guide to writing the reflections, which she found to be very helpful. The schedule of the retreat was handed out and multiple meetings were scheduled to ensure that the event went smoothly. “Dona actually led my first retreat at the Mount at Gretna Glen [Camp & Retreat Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania] with Miss G, and then again at Loyola at our retreat house in western Maryland, which makes it so much more special. It just goes to show that the bonds made on retreat will always be with you,” Maddie says. She also adds that while each retreat was unique and impacted her in different ways, one common thread through all of them was looking inward and learning her own strengths and passions.

Both Dona and Maddie say that participating in Mount retreats, and being exposed to the mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, prepared them to take on retreat planning on their own. “Both Maddie and I share what we consider our motto, ‘BWYFA: be where your feet are,’” Dona says. “This phrase was introduced to me on Junior Training Retreat (JTR) during the spring of my junior year [at the Mount]. When I became a leader for Maddie’s JTR, it was a phrase I wanted to continue sharing with the future UNITAS leaders. It is something I have taken to heart and try to remind myself of every day. To be where your feet are means to be fully present in the moment, and take in all it has to offer.” She credits being a leader on Unitas and JTR with helping her develop leadership skills and understand the importance of feeling vulnerable in a group setting. “I am a firm believer that you could go on the same retreat several times, and each time you will get something different out of it–sort of like a book,” Dona says. “You can read the same book a number of times at different points in your life, and each time you will take something new from it or look at something you already recognized but view it in a different light.” At the heart of all the retreats they have both experienced is introspection and bonding with close friends and acquaintances alike. Dona says as she began growing in her faith, she got more out of the retreats. “A retreat is an experience of yourself, others, and God,” Dona says. “You grow through your reflection, you connect with your teammates on a different level by spending extensive time with them planning and listening to their personal stories, and you find where you are in your relationship with God, whether it’s just the beginning or continuing to develop.” “On retreats, strangers become lifelong friends,” Maddie says. “Even if your lives don’t cross paths for years, you still share that special bond with someone.”

DARE TO

do it again!

Congratulations to everyone who DARED TO invest in the 2016-17 Mount Fund.Your overwhelming generosity raised $540,415, far exceeding our goal of $500,000. This incredible support allowed for things like the creation of the new collaborative workspaces throughout the building, supplies for the science labs and other classrooms, technology updates, and necessary art materials and athletic equipment purchases. Thank you for your incredible support! Now we need to do it again! The goal for this year’s Mount Fund is $550,000. This means we need you to once again Dare To care about the current Mount students as well as the future of the Academy. Meeting needs such as equipment updates, online library resources subscriptions, and software and technology purchases, is a challenge that is with us every year. Innovations such as new workspaces, classroom redesigns for deeper learning, new curriculum development such as Criminalistics Forensics and Historic Islam, and new extracurricular actives like the Video Marketing Club and the Citizenship Club are also ongoing and ever changing. All of these combined essential elements of the Mount are what the Mount Fund supports, because these are the types of dynamic differentiators that tuition alone does not cover. We are truly grateful to everyone who contributed to the Mount Fund last year, and we sincerely hope you will do so again for 2017-2018. We also invite those of you who have never given, or who haven’t given in a while, to DARE TO engage with the Mount in this meaningful way and be a part of the lives of the students and their successes throughout the coming year.

25th Anniversary Golf Classic Honoring Nicholas A. Giordano The Mount’s 25th Anniversary Golf Classic was held on September 29 at Green Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill. A beautiful autumn day of golfing was followed by cocktail hour, dinner, and a silent auction. The 25th Anniversary honored Nicholas A. Giordano, father of Colette ’93 and Jeannine ’93. Nick was a founding member of the Mount’s Board of Advisors, served on the Finance Committee, and as Board Chair. Nick helped to transform the Golf Classic into one of the Academy’s most successful fundraisers.

Proceeds from this event support the general endowment, which provides student financial aid and faculty enrichment programs. Proceeds are also contributed to the Eugenia F. Comerford ’37 Alumnae Award, given to the daughter of an alumna who qualifies for financial aid. Our sincere thanks to the 2017 chairs, Jules and Marybeth Quinones (parents of Grace ’18), and Mike and Nancy Reilly (parents of Jean ’18), and all of our committee members, sponsors, and participants.

letter from

A lumnae Board President Dear alumnae, families, and friends of the Mount community: In May, I had the great privilege of welcoming the 146 members of the Class of 2017 to the Alumnae Association as part of their Alumnae Induction. We had some fun as I pointed out just how much times had changed since my own Induction in 1996 (we didn’t have cellphones and barely had the Internet). More importantly, I also invited the girls to think about what has not changed in the great tradition of becoming an alumna of the Mount. I told the seniors: You are now connected to thousands of women who have shared a similar experience. These women believe in you and your abilities because you have been educated here. You are entering a challenging world that needs you. We need you to be unafraid to be leaders, to always ask why not, and dare to change the world in ways that we might not be able to imagine yet in this room today. But that’s a tall order--even for Mounties. You will need help along the way to greatness. We all do. I’m asking you to invite Mount alums into your life to be your mentors and your champions, and then to pay it forward and be that resource for other alums. Our relationship with one another as alumnae is very reflective of the mission and charism of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, which, whether we have realized it in the moment or not, has guided Mount students and alumnae from the beginning. In the charism of the Sisters, we are called each day to be welcoming and unioning. The circle always gets wider. There is always another seat at the table. I believe passionately that your relationship with the Mount and your fellow alums, both your opportunities to give to one another and to receive, can enrich your entire life and will in turn make the Mount community stronger. The Alumnae Board has ambitious plans (we are Mounties, after all) to provide new opportunities for alumnae of all generations to form productive and valuable relationships. Imagine the possibilities of greater connection. Internships and job opportunities, business relationships, friendships, support in difficult times....there is no end to the resource that we can be for one another. If you’ve never been back, or if it has been awhile, there has never been a better time to reconnect with the Mount and your fellow alumnae. Please know that there is always another seat at the table for you. Spes messis in semine, Erin McClafferty Erfle ’96

Golden Girls Luncheon

The legacy of sisterhood at the Mount is as old as the academy itself. The strong tradition is expressed in many ways by alumnae, one of which is the annual Golden Girls Luncheon, where alumnae who graduated from the Mount 50 years ago or more gather for an afternoon to connect over lunch. The 18th Annual Golden Girls Luncheon was held Friday, September 8, 2017 at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania. The Mount is proud of the strong ties throughout our alumnae community, especially those that endure for 50 years and more!

from the

Chair of the Board of Directors Dear friends, It is my pleasure to present to you the 2016-2017 Annual Report of Gifts. As you will see, we had a tremendously successful year! First and foremost, I am delighted to announce that the 2016-17 Mount Fund campaign raised $540,415, far exceeding its goal of $500,000 Thank you to all who DARED TO invest in the Mount Fund and all the other fundraising initiatives this past year. Your generosity had a profound impact on every student at the Mount. As you have read here in the Mount Magazine in recent issues, one of the quickest growing needs for the Academy is that of financial aid. Thanks to donations through EITC/OSTC, scholarship and grants, over 30% of Mount students received the aid they needed to help them attend. Proceeds from the highly successful 24th Annual Golf Classic and the student and alumnae-run Annual Miles of Magic 5k also provided tuition support for our students. I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped execute key events such as the Mount Runway Fashion Show - which keeps drawing sell-out crowds - and Celebrauction XXXIII – It’s a Shore Thing. Both of these efforts take countless hours of planning, amazing attention to detail and immeasurable dedication to our Mounties. I don’t know where we would be without our parent and alumnae volunteers. To our Parents Association, I am grateful for your work on activities such as the Freshman Tea, the Mount Magic Reception, Back to School Night and the many other events you do throughout the year to support students, parents and the Mount teaching and administrative colleagues. Many thanks to our Gold Key members for your incredible work with our admissions efforts including Open House, the entrance and practice exams, and attending high school nights. You are our greatest ambassadors. We also appreciate the individuals and families who promoted Open House with lawn signs and car magnets. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge and thank all the Mount faculty and administrative colleagues who, under the leadership of Sister Kathleen Brabson and Dr. Judith Caviston, spend their days ensuring that each Mount student is able to optimally capitalize on her time at the Mount. Thanks also to my fellow Board members, members of the Board committees and the Alumnae Board, as well as the Alumnae Class Agents for their tireless efforts on behalf of the Academy. As I look forward to the coming year, I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to continue to work with all these amazing people as we DARE TO build on last year’s success and serve our students and our dear neighbors in the mission and tradition of the Sisters of Saint Joseph and Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Best, Robbie Brennan Hain Chair, Board of Directors 26

“While I loved my time at the Mount, I did not truly appreciate the education I received until after college. I give back to the Mount because I feel that the Mount continues to give back to me in my daily life - as a friend, employee, wife and mother. The faculty always encouraged extracurricular activities coupled with challenging class schedules. I learned how to balance, prioritize and be a leader at a young age. I feel fortunate to still be tied into a strong, welcoming community.” – Katie McClernand Sacchetta ’05

Mount fund

“I give to the Mount Fund because I have seen its benefits firsthand: providing a holistic education to young people who may not otherwise be able to afford the Mount, creating a welcoming classroom and school environment through innovative furniture and use of space and providing cutting-edge technology in the classroom. Recently in my classroom, technology provided by the Mount Fund enabled students in my World Religions class to converse virtually with a woman of the Sikh faith to hear a firsthand experience of her faith and engage in interfaith dialogue, making connections and asking curious questions! This wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the Mount Fund and I am grateful for the opportunity to work in a school that constantly empowers our students to dare to discover the world beyond the walls of the Mount!” – Katie Kennedy, teacher, Mount Saint Joseph Acadmy

Sister Claire Helene Society The Sister Claire Helene Society has been established to honor those alumnae and friends of Mount Saint Joseph Academy who have remembered the Mount with a planned gift or bequest. These gifts become a permanent part of the Endowment, providing a source of income upon which the school can depend and use for years to come. The Society is named in loving memory of a beloved Latin, religion and French teacher who inspired two generations of Mount alumnae. For more information about the Sister Claire Helene Society, please contact Jill Gregori, Director of Development, at (251) 233-1859 or at jgregori@msjacad.org. EITC&OSTC TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS

Nearly 30% of current Mount students benefit from financial aid and that number increases annually. You can redirect your PA taxes as financial aid dollars to the Mount! The Educational Improvement Tax Credit and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit are Pennsylvania tax credit programs that allow Pennsylvania businesses that pay applicable taxes, as well as individuals who pay personal income tax through an LLC, S Corp, or who own or are a member of an LLP, to receive up to a 90% TAX CREDIT to be used by schools like the Mount for financial aid. “The PA EITC credit program is a great way to put the money that Philadelphia Insurance Companies would otherwise pay in Pennsylvania taxes to a cause we believe in – a Mount education. We know that my company’s tax dollars will go directly to the Mount to be used as financial aid for young women who need the additional assistance. We are thrilled to take advantage of this very convenient and effective opportunity to support the mission of the Mount.” Michael & Heather Kelly ‘88 [Michael, SVP Finance & Treasurer for Tokio Marine North America / Philadelphia Insurance Companies] Elizabeth ‘17 & Caroline ‘20
