from the

President “The

future enters into us, in order to tr ansform itself in us, long before it happens.”

r ainer maria rilke

In preparing my graduation remarks I turned to a favorite German poet of mine, Rainer Maria Rilke. Some have described his poetry as “mystical.” This quote from his writings caught my attention and, in what has become my practice, I now share my thoughts for the Class of 2017 with you. I confirmed that graduation day is the official launch into the next phase of their lives, and that the future is unfolding before them. I reinforced that each one of them can impact the future, and that this transformation has been happening in a deeply personal and exceptional way for some time. I spoke of how they have been immersed in the spirit and mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, and Mount Saint Joseph Academy during their four years at the Mount. I affirmed that, as the Class of 2017, they have demonstrated the qualities of transformational leadership. That is, they have the courage to take risks, that they can inspire others, and have shown by their choices, that they have set high standards for themselves. I asked the Class of 2017 to become Agents of Transformation, women who are attracted to the world of new ideas, wild imaginations, and the unceasing questions that challenge potential and build confidence. I reminded them that they have been immersed and surrounded by God’s grace and the many people who love them and call them to be their best. In closing, I returned to my opening quote and added another piece of wisdom from Rilke. Transformational leaders are women and men of hope sustained by the breath of their imaginations and the memories of their successes and failures. The future has entered your heart and mind in order to transform itself. “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves. Do not seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answers.” With confidence in them, I told them, to go with courage! Choose the future with hope, and be filled with pride as they become agents of transformation! This summer edition is filled with pictures from graduation, Alumnae Day and many of our spring events. I hope you will see people you know or better yet, that you will see yourself as you remember the events of these past months. I especially ask you to read our feature story, DARE TO INSPIRE: Alumnae in the Arts, and the article on page 12 about our students who traveled to the C/SSJ Leadership Conference in Cleveland. Please know that we at the Mount value being in relationship with you, and we count on your partnership and support. Enjoy the summer, rest and renew your spirits, and celebrate whenever you can! Warm regards,

Sister Kathleen Brabson, SSJ President

Several Mount students traveled to Italy over spring break. Here, students are pictured with the priest who said Easter Mass at il Duomo di Sorrento, Cattedrale dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo in Sorrento. On May 4, the Mount hosted the only Philadelphia-area screening of the documentary film I Am Jane Doe. Mrs. Kennedy’s Christian Morality class organized the event. The film explores the legal battles that families are waging after their middle school-aged daughters were victims of human trafficking organizations.

6

After the event, Mrs. Kennedy’s class invited S. Kathleen Coll, director of Dawn’s Place (a non-profit that supports women negatively affected by commercial sexual exploitation) to school. The class presented her with a check for $1,000 from fundraising efforts around the film screening and related bakesales. Broadway Wishes came to the Mount on May 19. The event was arranged by seniors Katie Hunter and Alyssa Mattia, with help from Colleen Mars and Maggie McDonald. Students from the Mount, La Salle

Students Tr avel to CSSJ Leadership Conference

in

Cleveland

On Thursday, June 8, five students (Emma Ferrero ’18, Molly Higgins ’18, Lily Howard ’19, Brenna Reilly ’18, and Kelly Ryan ’18), Mimi Bender (Latin) and Rebecca Gutherman (Director of Campus Ministry) traveled to Cleveland for the 3rd Annual CSSJ Student Leadership Conference. Mounties joined other student leaders from St. Joseph's Academy in Cleveland, St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge, St. Teresa's Academy in Kansas City, and Nazareth Academy in Chicago. After arriving at Baldwin Wallace University, where they stayed, students enjoyed icebreakers and group prayer. During the second day of the conference, students traveled to St. Joseph’s Academy for leadership sessions led by the faculty members of the schools in attendance. S. Phyllis DeFucchia, CSJ, from Cleveland, led the large group session on the charism, mission, and history of the CSSJs. Students were then able to attend sessions on leadership, relationships, environmental justice, and service to the dear neighbor. On Saturday, students and teachers visited one of four different service sites in Cleveland and performed a morning of “service to the dear neighbor.” Students went to one of the following: • St. Augustine Health Ministries, a not-for-profit organization founded by Catholic Charities (Diocese of Cleveland) dedicated to providing health care and social services within the community. • St. Augustine Hunger Center, run by St. Augustine Church, which provides meals to those in need and addresses other needs of the poor and the homeless such as food, clothing, emergency funding for rent and utilities, furniture, appliances, and serves as an advocate for members of the community living below the poverty line who are seeking medical help. • St. Herman House in Ohio City, which provides shelter, food, and clothing to the local community. The organization also holds “hospitality hours” and prayer services, where all are welcome to come and speak with caring individuals who listen and engage in authentic interaction and fellowship. • Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System that provides health care and supportive services to the elderly. 12

Summer 2017

“It was amazing to expand my leadership skills and the ways to serve others,” Lily Howard said. “I learned that service isn't just serving someone food; it's listening to them and treating them as a human being.”

Kelly Ryan gained a solid understanding of the SSJ charism when she attended the conference last year. Returning this summer opened her eyes to new ways she can implement the mission in her life.

That evening, students attended a Friends and Family Mass with the local CSJs and then had a cookout. Getting to know the Sisters was certainly a highlight for many.

“This trip reinforced my own interpretation of how I can live the mission in my life as well as how I can share it with others, especially those in my school community,” she said. “I am excited to implement the ideas we have to brighten the SSJ mission at our school.”

On Sunday, the group enjoyed a day of fun in the city by visiting the Cleveland Museum of Art and a Cleveland Indians/Chicago White Sox Game at Progressive Park. The conference concluded with a small group brainstorming hour during which all the schools conjured up ideas of how to further the mission and charism of the Sisters in their own schools. Finally, while traveling home on Monday, Mount students paid a visit to the Flight 93 memorial site. After returning home, the students reflected on the trip and what it meant to them.

This trip reinforced my own intrepretation of how I can live the mission in my life as well as how I can share it with others, especially those in my school community”

Brenna Reilly, who also attended last year, echoed many of Kelly’s sentiments. She also said that she learned “the true definition of a leader” from her peers in attendance, the adult ambassadors, and those she met during the trip. “I felt especially humbled to be a part of the wonderful community that is the CSSJ schools and excited to implement the charism into the Mount's personal legacy,” Brenna said.

Congratulations to A lyssa M attia, who was named

Valedictorian of the Class

of

Gr aduation

2017.

I

invite you to imagine your daily morning commute to school. Whether you drive, carpool, or take the bus, each of us experiences traveling up the Mount driveway. On some days, the sun is so blindingly bright we wish we were wearing sunglasses. We usually notice a cross to our right, welcoming us with open arms, the Campanile to our left, beckoning us to begin our day, and perhaps the banners that hang from the light posts, bearing our school motto, “Spes Messis in Semine.” Although we hear and see these words almost daily, we may not always take the time to think about their direct application to our lives and futures. The Latin phrase “Spes Messis in Semine” translates in English to “The hope of the harvest is in the seed.” This motto can serve as a summation of Jesus’s parable of the mustard seed. In this parable, Jesus says to his disciples, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed…It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown… It becomes a large bush, and the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.” Each of us, as students of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, are like the mustard seed of which Jesus speaks. As freshmen, we were young and inexperienced, not knowing what to expect from the years ahead of us. We feared reading The Odyssey and struggled to perfect the art of a correctly formatted Works Cited page. Yet slowly but surely, the Mount was nurturing us as seeds, encouraging us to grow into the best versions of ourselves. The next year, our confidence began to grow. We supported the seniors who reached out to Malala Yousafzai and admired their mantra, “Why not?” We stood in solidarity to “bring back our girls,” and we started to understand why Mount is regarded by alumnae as a sisterhood, not only with our classmates but also with girls around the globe. As juniors, we started to look beyond the Mount. Like a plant beginning to peek out from under the soil, we were reaching toward the sun, exploring various colleges while reading Pride and Prejudice and the driver’s manual on road trips. Our teachers helped us focus our goals, watering our ambitions and dreams. By senior year, we were ready to make the most of our last Founders’ Day, Mini-Thon, Charity Day, and prom. We bonded as a class through purple ribbons and Unitas retreats. Each special moment helped us grow out of the soil and closer to the sun, leading us to today, when we are in full bloom. Today, we are the flower, the strong fruit tree, the final result of a seed planted four years ago. Within each of us the Kingdom of God has grown, and we are now overflowing fonts of compassion, grace, and love, seeking always to serve the dear neighbor. Of course, we would not have become the young women we are today without being rooted in strong support systems that endlessly encouraged our growth. Our parents have tended us our entire lives and have made countless sacrifices to ensure our success. The Sisters of Saint Joseph, since the founding of the Mount in 1858, have dedicated their lives to our education in the hopes that we will pass on the mission of unity and reconciliation to all whom we encounter. Our teachers and administrators have worked tirelessly to give us a meaningful high school experience, filled with lessons that will influence us far beyond the classroom. The girls sitting beside us have lifted us up whenever we had difficulty. Take the time to look around at your sisters. Although today may be the last time we are gathered together as a class, we will always be united with one another because of the familial bond we share as Mounties. As written by novelist Jane Austen, “Children of the same family, the same blood, with the same first associations and habits, have some means of enjoyment in their power, which no subsequent connections can supply…” As we move forward to new places and endeavors, let us, too, cherish our Mount connection and our enjoyment in the power we have gained here to help us become the founders of tomorrow. Sitting among us are women who are destined to achieve greatness in various ways. Perhaps one of us is a future CEO of Google, a Nobel laureate, an Academy Award winner, a Time person of the year, a groundbreaking politician, a compassionate doctor, a creative entrepreneur, or a loving mother. We are the creators of the rest of our lives, and we now have the tools we need to go forth and turn our dreams into reality. If we believe in our abilities and remain faithful to the values the Mount has instilled in us, we will find success on whatever path we choose in life. From this day onward, as we metaphorically travel back down the Mount driveway, our possibilities are endless. In this unforgettable moment, we are the harvest. We are the mustard seeds that have grown into strong, towering trees. Let us stretch our branches toward the sun and toward others and never stop growing. Congratulations, Class of 2017. True to our alma mater, we have placed this motto before us in life: “Spes Messis in Semine.”

2017 Fournier Medal Recipient:

Robert W. Duff

The Fournier Medal is awarded each year to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of Mother Saint John through distinguished service and loyalty to the Mount. This year’s recipient is Robert W. Duff. Bob’s association with the Mount began when he and his wife, Joann, decided to send their two daughters, Johanna ’09 and Mary ’10, to the Mount. From his earliest days, it was evident that Bob was ready to invest himself in the life and mission of the Mount, and to be an example to his daughters of generosity and service. The Catholic community of Philadelphia and the Mount, in particular, has benefited from his faithfulness to his father and mother’s legacy of giving back with a generous heart. His dedication to Mount Crew is obvious in his unwavering and generous support of the team, along with renovations and accommodations to the Mount’s boathouse. Significant infrastructure enrichments happened here at the Mount under his conscientious leadership, as chair of the Facilities Committee. S. Kathleen Brabson, SSJ, President with Robert W. Duff

CONGRATULATIONS MOUNT COMMUNITY YOU DARED TO DO IT AGAIN! Thanks to everyone who supported the Mount Fund this year! Because of your generosity and understanding of why this fund is so important, we not only hit our goal of $500,000, we exceeded it, raising $540,414! Proving, once again, that the Mount community DARES TO believe in raising the bar by educating young women to be transformational leaders steeped in the tradition and mission of the SSJs. Because of YOU and your INVESTMENT in the Mount Fund, even more financial aid will be available to deserving young women who will go into the world as founders and game changers. Because of YOU and your APPRECIATION of the significance of the Mount Fund, all of our students will reap the benefits of superior faculty, outstanding classroom experiences and innovative and relevant elective opportunities…all of which provide a differentiating edge for college. And because YOU and your COMMITMENT to the Mount through the Mount Fund, we will continue to provide unsurpassed experiences beyond the classroom through extracurricular activities, service initiatives, and of course, our outstanding athletic and arts opportunities. YOU make the difference! If you did not make a gift to the Mount Fund this year, you can start us off for the 2017-18 year by going to msjacad.org/giving and make your gift today. And if you did give this year, THANK YOU and we invite you to keep the momentum going by giving to the Mount Fund again for 2017-18.

Mount Introduces New Uniforms for Fall 2017 Starting this fall, the Mount will debut a new element to the school uniforms. Students will be required to wear a Mount quarter-zip pullover in place of the green sweater. Students may also wear a long-sleeved golf shirt or a short-sleeved golf shirt under the new pullover. As always, we hope to instill in our students a sense of pride when wearing the Mount uniform. The green plaid pattern of the uniform skirt is exclusive to the Mount and representative of the uniqueness of the Academy. Our students are representatives of the Mount, even when they are off campus, and we are confident that the new uniform will continue to reflect the Mount pride that our students exhibit. The administration thanks families in advance for their cooperation in helping to enforce the updated dress code as we enter the new school year.

Incoming Scholars Reception On May 4, students from the Class of 2021 who received scholarships gathered in Fontbonne for a reception. Students and their families snacked on light fare as they were welcomed by S. Kathleen Brabson, SSJ, President and Mount faculty and staff. They were also treated to a performance by Mount’s Glee Club. The event gave incoming students the chance to meet some of their classmates before the start of the 2017-2018 school year, and allowed parents to meet the families of their daughters’ peers.

R ight Notes

Julia Tarlo Mulholland ’00 on her career in oper a As far back as she can remember, Julia Tarlo Mulholland ’00 has loved to sing. Empowered by the strength of her voice, she turned her passion into a career as a successful, classically-trained opera singer with an extensive list of roles that span the San Francisco Bay Area, East Coast, and Midwest. Julia and her family (husband, James, and children Gabriel, 3, and Lena, 1) live close to their San Francisco parish, Mission Dolores Basilica. Julia works there as a section leader for the choir and cantor. She also is preparing for the role of Elise Maynard from Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard with the Lamplighters Music Theater in San Francisco. The show debuts in August. “This particular Gilbert and Sullivan show is much closer to grand opera than many of their other works,” Julia says. “It is a lot of full, robust singing, and combines tragedy with traditional comedy. I am looking forward to exploring that juxtaposition.” Although a “typical day” is a bit of a misnomer for a professional artist like Julia, she usually attends rehearsals at night, giving her the opportunity to be with her children during the day. She admits it is difficult to practice with a toddler and a baby, but she gets creative when necessary; she will play music she is learning and sing while cooking or folding laundry. As a result, her children are already wellversed in a variety of music and will often sing and clap along. As a child, Julia loved to sing (she says Disney songs were her favorite). The summer before seventh grade, a friend asked her to audition for the summer stock play Beauty and the Beast. After the audition, Julia says the director told her mother she had a beautiful voice. She was cast in that play, and the following year, she landed the lead role in the summer stock production of Cinderella. She began taking voice lessons, and looked into high schools where she could develop her talent; but as the youngest of 11 children, private school was a stretch for Julia’s family. Her vocal teacher suggested she audition for a voice scholarship at the Mount. “The rest is history,” Julia says, “because that is really where it all started.” At the Mount, she participated in a variety of singing activities,

including the fall musicals and singing the national anthem at assemblies. “It was a busy time, and I had a lot of love and support from the Mount community, encouraging me to pursue music…so I did!,” Julia says. After graduation, she attended Manhattanville College in White Plains, New York. It was around this time that she says she became interested in opera. To focus her studies, she transferred after one year to SUNY Purchase to attend their conservatory of music. After four years of conservatory training, she graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Music degree. She moved to Chicago after graduation to attend the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. She graduated in 2007 with a Master of Music degree and a certificate in vocal pedagogy. Chicago was her home for seven years. She made her living as an artist, working with several opera companies and chamber groups, and singing with the Chicago Symphony Chorus for six seasons. She supplemented her income by teaching voice and piano lessons. She also met her husband while living there. They got married and he secured a job as a software designer in San Francisco. Because she was established in the Chicago opera scene, Julia initially struggled with the decision to relocate to the West Coast, but says it was one of the best moves she has made. “The Bay Area is a thriving arts community,” Julia says. “Within days of moving to San Francisco, I stumbled upon Opera On Tap, which is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to bring opera to people. I have been singing with them ever since.” Opera On Tap often sings in bars and other small community venues, but Julia has also performed staged opera productions with them. In 2015, she was a teaching artist with the San Francisco Opera Guild’s outreach program Opera à la Carte. There, she had the opportunity to show hundreds of Bay Area kids opera by singing Pamina in a condensed English version of Mozart's The Magic Flute. “The best part of being a performer, for me, is when you move someone,” Julia says. “There is nothing more rewarding than watching someone laugh out loud or cry with you.” mount saint joseph academy

Michelle Barbieri ’96, visual artist Growing up in Philadelphia, Michelle Barbieri ’96 was inspired by the surrounding street art and graffiti. However, she was unaware at the time that this inspiration would become a vital part of her future. After graduating from the Mount, Michelle earned a bachelor’s degree in geography from the University of Delaware, and a master’s in city planning from the University of Pennsylvania.

that can be used in virtual reality productions for a range of clients, such as the Bok Building (located at the former Bok Technical High School in South Philadelphia), Gillette, and Red Bull’s Art of the Can. Klip’s projects employ the technology of projection to create walls of art that are part of a space’s existing architecture.

Michelle was always fascinated by the contrast between the city and the artists that used "the city as their canvas, adding colors and incorporating them into their surroundings," she says. At University of Delaware in 1999, Michelle met Ricardo Riviera, who shared her passion for art, and together they operate Klip Collective, a company that creates largescale artscapes that are beautiful, captivating displays of art merging with technology. Ricardo developed the company while Michelle was working as a city planner, and she officially joined in 2009. For client Longwood Gardens, Klip Collective created Nightscape, a light and sound experience that immerses guests in an interactive adventure with lighted imagery projected onto buildings, statues, plants, trees, and other objects in the gardens. The effect is spectacular, as it literally lights up the night, using Longwood’s natural elements as both its backdrop and a key component of the experience. As executive director, Michelle facilitated the creation of this exhibit. “The goal was to create a new experience for visitors and members to see the gardens in a new way,” Michelle says. “We wanted to transform the formal gardens into something otherworldly, coming alive in a playful and psychedelic way. The visitor response was overwhelmingly positive.” She says that the concept of a collective such as Klip is dependent on teamwork and keeping everyone on the same page during collaboration. One of the many benefits of being a member at a collective is working closely with other creatives, from interactive designers to storytellers. Michelle’s role is to lay down the

foundation of a project and make sure everyone has what they need when they need it. While at the Mount, Michelle was active in the environmental club and promoted the academy’s recycling program. She also participated in the Science Olympiad and presented her work at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Her interests and goals include becoming more active in city planning, specifically emergency management, and “alleviating the negative impact of climate change.”

She encourages current Mount students and graduates to follow their passions, especially those related to art, as they can lead to great things. She also notes patience for the creative process is key for those pursuing a career in the arts. “It is very fulfilling to facilitate the creative process from conception to execution. To see a rough idea evolve with the hard work of many chasing a similar vision into something tangible is awesome,” Michelle says.

Learning to play the guitar at age 8. Writing poetry at age 10. These are just some of the creative expressions that Ellen R. Brooks ’76 exhibited as a child. It’s no surprise that she carved out a career as an artist and art educator.

Ellen currently operates her own studio, Ellen R. Brooks Art Studio, where she creates installations, sculptures, paintings, and drawings. She says that it is usually the imagery of an idea that calls her to work in one medium or another. She often goes long periods working in one medium. Recently, her focus had been on installations, but she is now gravitating back toward printmaking and painting. Rhonda Baker Lockwood ’98 Dancer, Royal Caribbean Production Studio, Consultant rhondalee711@hotmail.com

When it comes to her work, Ellen says her biggest inspiration is emotion—specifically, “the beauty that can be found in emotions. Things that trigger an emotional response.” Ellen says it was always important for her to have the freedom to explore her artistic interests. Throughout her education and the years beyond, as she pursued her studio projects, she worked in business to earn a living. Upon the recommendation of some of her professors at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), where she was working toward her undergraduate degree, she applied for and received residency grants through the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts to work as a teaching artist within various schools. A long-term residency at Holy Ghost Preparatory was a turning point; she suddenly knew she wanted to teach at the high school level. She currently serves as chair of the Fine Arts department at Villa Joseph Marie High School in Holland, Pennsylvania.

“I rejoice at guiding the discovery of [the students’] own abilities and watching them develop confidence along the way,” Ellen says. “Helping them meet the challenges required to move to higher levels of creating is both trying and exciting.” At her studio, she also offers private art lessons and portfolio-building sessions for high school and private students who want to continue studying art. Her formal art studies began at the Mount. She was encouraged to apply to both art and music schools, but was unsure which direction she wanted to take. She enrolled in art classes at Montgomery County Community College, where she developed a portfolio for applying to art school. With the desire to become a fine artist, she enrolled in PAFA’s fouryear certificate program, majoring in printmaking.

“There, I was encouraged to experiment and explore, developing my own techniques in various media,” Ellen says. Her time at PAFA was collaborative and inspiring. She says that often, other students would ask to work with her, or learn the techniques she used in the creative process. Exploration with materials and developing imagery became the foundation of her work as an artist. Compelled to work in sculpture, she would later return to PAFA to earn a master’s degree in fine arts. During her graduate schooling, she

Ellen knows that making a living as an artist is still a struggle for many. She found success working other jobs to supplement her income while developing her craft. “I encourage my students with design abilities to consider areas of commercial art to pursue in order to make a living in an artistic field. Alumnae Awards Hall of Fame Award Dr. Charrell Bullard-Bird ’92 Through her career and personal life, Charrell lives out the Mount’s mission daily. She chose a noble career in healthcare, and provides comfort to sick children and their families. She currently serves as a neonatologist at Nemours DuPont Neonatalogy at Inspira Health in Southern New Jersey, and is an assistant clinical professor in the department of pediatrics at Rowan University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine. Previously Charrell was a neonatologist at Pediatrix Medical Group of PA, a division of Pinnacle Health, in Harrisburg. In her acceptance speech, Charrell referenced the Mount’s motto, “spes messis in semine,” which translates to, “the hope of the harvest is in the seed.” She said, “Those words and lifelong message have applied to most of my achievements (and failures) in life as well as challenge my future endeavors.” She hopes that the legacy she leaves behind will inspire young women in future generations to think big in the field of medicine.

Rosemary McNally ’17 Alumnae Award Dona Travaline Schmidt ’77 This year’s Rosemary McNally Award recipient has been a devoted alumna for many years. She has contributed to the planning process of Reunions for her class, and served on the Alumnae Board of Directors, the Special Events Committee, and the Parent’s Association when her three daughters attended the Mount. Dona continues to serve as the parent coordinator of Quizzo at the Mount. The Academy is grateful for her many years of service and her belief in our mission of educating young women.
