letter from the President Dear Friends, Thank you! In just a few short months of my official arrival as the third President of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, you have graciously welcomed me back to this cherished institution that holds so much history and promise. The following pages offer a glimpse of those who believe in the Mount, believe in our mission of educating young women and believe in the promise of what we can accomplish together as a community. I am truly grateful for your continued commitment and generous support. My sincere thanks to S. Mary Dacey, Dr. Judith Caviston, Mr. Don Holdren and Mrs. Kathleen Guyger, who shepherded the Academy during a most challenging year. Their leadership enabled us to continue educating our young women and nurturing them during a critical time. Our faculty worked tirelessly to adapt to virtual learning and our stellar students responded in true Mount style. The fact that we were able to have a live graduation on the date that it was originally scheduled speaks volumes about the dedication of our Administration and Colleagues. I also extend my thanks to the Board of Directors and to the Alumnae Association for the countless hours that they gave throughout the year to ensure the success of Mount Saint Joseph Academy. It is a pleasure working with you! We were fortunate to have gathered as a community for many of our events in the early part of the year. Our 26th Annual Golf Outing, chaired by Sue Doney Leonard ’80, Tracy Allu Albertelli ’93 and Meghan Mahon, was a wonderful success and raised over $80,000 for financial need scholarships. On Founders’ Day, we gathered and blessed the S. Kathleen Brabson Turf Field. The Special Events Committee filled Whitemarsh Valley Country Club with excited students and proud families for the annual Mount Runway fashion show. The Alumnae Association sponsored Breakfast with Santa and the school was filled with joyful noises from the young children in their pjs and our student volunteers. Our Robotics program took center stage in February as we unveiled a new lab – custom made for our award-winning Firebirds team. Additionally, the Robert Foell STEM Scholarship was established to support an incoming student involved in STEM during her grade school years. Quizzo, graciously emceed by Dave Cavanaugh and Chris Lally, exhibited the fun competitiveness of our community and raised critical dollars for the Robotics program. In March we gathered at the Purple & Gold Gala to celebrate the commitment of one of our greatest supporters, Mr. Jim Paul. Jim’s dedication to the Academy knows no bounds. A father of two graduates, Kate ’99 and Tina ’01, former Chair of the Board of Directors and recipient of the Fournier Medal, Jim has been a champion of the Mount since 1996. We were happy to have the opportunity to honor him for his many years of service. While COVID-19 forced us to leave the physical buildings of the Academy, the work of the Mount continued. Our faculty continued to teach, our students continued to learn and our staff continued to work. And we did not accomplish this alone. Despite the pandemic, our generous community continued to ensure success at the Academy through support of the Mount Fund, scholarships and the EITC/ OSTC programs. When it became clear that some of our families needed help with tuition because of COVID-related issues, you responded to the Dear Neighbor Emergency Tuition Fund. I’ve always known that our community was filled with thoughtful, generous people who support “the dear neighbor.” Thank you for bringing life to our mission. We are certainly blessed to be surrounded by a community who continues to invest in our young women. I encourage others to join in support and make an impact on this next generation of leaders. letter from the Chair of the Board of Directors Dear Members of the Mount Community, As Chairwoman of the Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to present you with the 20192020 Annual Report of Gifts. The following pages offer a glimpse into the many ways our community partners with our Academy – and each other – to ensure sustainability to the Mount’s Mission. Because tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating our young women, the funds raised through your generous contributions help support our ever improving state-of-the-art facilities, our dedicated faculty and staff, and continued access for many outstanding students. Like so many, the Mount will recognize 2020 as the year of transition, one filled with challenges, triumphs, and opportunities. We are grateful for the leadership of Sister Mary Dacey who graciously returned to the Mount to serve as Interim President. She offered deliberate and focused vision. In July 2020, we welcomed Sister Charlene Diorka as MSJA’s third President. We are grateful for her leadership as we continue to strategize for a post pandemic world, one that will be ever more reliant, “on the education of women largely depends the future of society.” I am grateful to my fellow Board and committee members whose work ensured the Mount remained fiscally sound. The Development Committee, chaired by John Mischler, celebrated a successful Mount Fund appeal including gifts to the Dear Neighbor Emergency Tuition Fund for current families who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are grateful to the Sisters of Saint Joseph whose significant generosity initiated this focused appeal. The Facilities Committee, chaired by Nancy McKernan, continued to work on projects over the summer to update our campus for both aesthetics and safety. These projects included upgrading the cafeteria and installing new lavatories in the gym corridor. The Finance Committee, chaired by Dorothy Riehs, guided us through financial strategies that helped provide funding for the technology needed to switch to daily virtual learning. This committee also ensured protective equipment and safety protocols were made available for our students, educators and staff upon our school’s reopening. They also guided investments and budgets through various scenario plans to ensure fiscal sustainability. Our Enrollment and Marketing Committee, chaired by Beth Brown, developed a strategic plan to attract young women who desire a transformational educational experience and maintain our reputation as the premier all-girls Catholic Academy in the Philadelphia area. The Mission and Membership Committee, chaired by Sister Theresa Maugle, helped to bring our mission to life by reaching out to all constituencies and enhancing our partnerships in the community. The Mount’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, cochaired by Pamela Hunt Gwaltney ’79 and Jennifer Boston, have been engaging in developing and supporting social justice initiatives to enhance learning opportunities for all our Mount constituents. Our Alumnae Association, led by Laura Dolan Remaker ’00, continues to grow and create networking opportunities to Mounties across the decades. This year’s reunion was transformed into a “virtual event” which allowed for even greater participation. We look forward to celebrating with the 0’s and 5’s as well as the 1’s and 6’s at Reunion 2021! Sincere thanks to all who serve as Class Agents to encourage deeper engagement with the Academy throughout the year, especially those who consistently find creative ways to keep us connected. And, to the Class of 2020…. You have epitomized what it takes to be a Mountie. You are women of courage, compassion and conviction. There was no denying the smiles behind the masks as you walked across the stage at graduation on that picture perfect May afternoon. Mount Saint Joseph Academy hosts the area’s only in-person, socially distanced graduation ceremony in the parking lot of the Academy. Families stay in their cars for the majority of the ceremony. Accompanied by their parents, graduates process and walk across the stage to receive their diplomas.

The annual Golden Girls Luncheon brings together alumnae who graduated 50 or more years ago.

The new state-of-the-art Robotics Lab grand opening reveals an entirely renovated space for the Firebirds team to build, brainstorm, experiment, and store equipment. The space was redesigned and renovated thanks to the generosity of Eric Lintner, father of Brynn Lintner ’21.

Per the statewide order issued to slow the spread of COVID-19, Mount Saint Joseph Academy closes. The reality of the pandemic becomes clearer in the first few weeks following the closure, and the Mount remains closed for the entire school year. Throughout this time, students learn virtually, and faculty and staff work remotely.

Why I give to the Mount Fund

The Mount Fund is critical to the success of our beloved MSJA. Tuition covers only about 82% of the actual cost to send our daughters, nieces, granddaughters and loved ones to Mount. The other 18% comes from the Mount Fund. As a graduate and now (finally) an alumnae mother, I feel strongly that this is the best way to show my support and further the mission of not only the SSJs, but the mission of the school. A reflection on the value of maintaining the archives... The Spanish Flu in 1918 affected the Mount’s schedule as unexpectedly as the pandemic of 2020. But the administration rose to the occasion then just as it is doing so today. The school’s archives revealed documentation about this deadly disease in the 1918-1919 edition of “The Sheaf,” the Academy’s yearbook. The writer, a sophomore, reported that their school year had just begun on September 14, 1918, when “influenza crept in upon them and the pupils were sent home out of harm’s way.” She made special note of “the ever faithful sisters and a few altruistic girls who valiantly and successfully combated the spread of further contagion and nursed back to health those few unfortunates who had not escaped the disease.” Upon their return to school in November, she said that the year “sped by, requiring gigantic effort in order to accomplish nine months work in six.” The Mount’s archives are a repository of information that enables the visitor to learn about the school’s past as they navigate the present. When I reflect on our Golden Class of 1970, I feel we’ve been preparing for this since before 2010 and the preparations for our 40th anniversary. A Class List served as a starting point and many phone hours rendered a good sampling of girls I knew well and others I vowed to renew acquaintance. By Fall of 2019, my fellow Class Agent, Ginny Bendinger Wischhusen, and I laid the groundwork for planning a memorable 50th and set about options for our Class Gift. During a Class Brunch of 20+ girls, we discussed this topic and the proposal of Cathy’s scholarship fund became a sudden no brainer! One of our classmates, Cathy Fitzsimmons started a self-named scholarship a number of years ago with a personal goal to help an aspiring young woman from a single parent household benefit from the Mount education we all recognize and share, now 50 years hence. Soliciting funds from our anniversary class had a direct impact on our collective success. My written words to our class “It won’t render a brass plaque ‘From the Class of 1970’, but it may make a big difference in the scholastic life of some young woman who would otherwise not be able to attend the Mount. Thus we feel this is a worthwhile recipient of our consolidated donation.” I think we did OK! While the Coronavirus pandemic has prohibited us from being together to celebrate, we remain forever united via e-mail, Messenger, telephone and of course, our notorious monthly Breakfast Club - always behaving in true Mountie tradition…..I leave you with that! S. Claire Helene Society The S. Claire Helene Society has been established to honor those alumnae and friends of Mount Saint Joseph Academy who have remembered the Mount wih a planned gift or bequest. These gifts become a permanent part of the Endowment, providing a source of income upon which the school can depend and use for years to come.
