Letter from the President We who live by school calendars have a second celebration when it comes to January 1 and the start of the new calendar year. In some ways we do begin a new year. In other ways we continue, we enter into a second semester –- a half-way point in the school year. Whatever calendar we follow, this time invites us to reflect on what has passed, to hold hopes for future time, and perhaps to make resolutions for a better, happier life. Maya Angelou’s poem “Continue” captures this dichotomy. She invites, even challenges us to continue the good of being and doing for self and the other (what we call the “dear neighbor”). Not far actually from the Mount’s mission and quite a shift from making resolutions to exercise more often and to lose weight! Specifically, she calls us to continue: acts of kindness, humor and laughter concern for the least and the lonely, young and defenseless walking with the despised and diseased living with gratitude, faith and love. The lines of her poem that best capture my experience at the Mount these past months are these: to ignore no vision which comes to enlarge your range and increase your spirit, to love deeply and risk everything for the good thing. As a Mount community we are called to embrace the vision that enlarges our range--to grow…to develop…to embrace a world where change informs every area of life. We students, colleagues, alums, parents, and board members are called to work together, to resist complacency and to risk everything for “the good” in all aspects of school life. Father Medaille, the founder of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, would call it “the more.” At the same time, our mission calls us to deepen our spirit and to love deeply, to be agents of transformation in a world that is broken and in need of healing. As I look back on last year, I am grateful for the level of your honesty, your support, and your willingness to enlarge our vision and risk all for the good thing. Above all, I am grateful for the gift of community—it is what distinguishes the Mount, the glue that holds us together as we honor tradition and embrace the new. As I look ahead, I am confident that we will continue to work together for good. That is how we have weathered this past year, and that is how we will move into a new decade. I am delighted for the new life and leadership that Sister Charlene will provide and promise my support for a smooth transition. My prayer is that all of you find in the Mount community a place of safety, health, peace and love. Gratefully,

1 Sister Mary Dacey, SSJ President mount saint joseph academy

Rose Szczesniak Hemingway ’01 surprised students in the cast of MSJA’s fall musical, “Mamma Mia!,” with a guest lecture and Q&A session in late August. Students were thrilled to hear the perspective of not only a Broadway actress, but one who was cast in the musical they were preparing to perform. Hemingway starred in the national Broadway tour of “Mamma Mia!,” in which she played the role of Sophie. She also starred in the Broadway musical “How to Succeed in Business” alongside Daniel Radcliffe and John Larroquette, and was cast in the national tour of “Kinky Boots.”

GirlPOWER is an annual off-season competition featuring all-girl drive teams and fun activities for younger children. The goal of the event is to provide hands-on experience in robotics and STEMrelated activities to grade and middle school children, particularly girls. At the event, the Firebirds compete and perform robotics demos for the children in attendance.

The 2019 fall musical, “Mamma Mia!,” was performed in November to nearly sold-out crowds.

Keeping with tradition, the Senior Tree Trimming took place in early December. On the tree in Fontbonne hangs ornaments with the MSJA seal on the front and each senior’s name on the back; each student takes home her ornament before Christmas break.

The annual Christmas concert featured performances by the Glee Club, Orchestra, Sweet Madelines, Handbell Choir, and music scholars.

Thank You

Thanks to the extremely hard work and generosity of our crew families and supporters, the Mount’s boathouse space at the Hines Rowing Center underwent transformational renovations last year, making the layout fresh and stateof-the-art. We cannot thank enough the individuals and organizations that helped make these improvements possible. On behalf of the entire Mount community, our crew coaches, and of course, the girls on our crew teams ‌ thank you!

Founders’ Day October 15, 2019 The annual Founders’ Day celebration took place on a gorgeous sunny day in midOctober. Commemorating the founding of the Mount, the students walked from campus to the SSJ Motherhouse in Chestnut Hill, where they attended Mass in the newlyrenovated chapel. Following Mass, the entire student body, along with faculty and staff, gathered on the turf field to officially dedicate it as the Sister Kathleen Brabson Field. The afternoon was capped off with a student dance party as we celebrated the founding and growth of our Mount community.

appointed

Sister Charlene Diorka, ssj Next President of Mount Saint Joseph Academy

On December 17, 2019, the Board of Directors confirmed the appointment of Sister Charlene Diorka, SSJ as the next president of Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Her appointment followed a national search, which began in June 2019, by a 12-member Search Committee composed of representatives of the Board of Directors, staff, alumnae, parents, and the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia. She officially assumes the role on July 1, 2020. Sr. Charlene holds an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Chestnut Hill College and a master’s degree in Theology from Saint Michael’s College in Winooski, Vermont. She has also pursued further studies at the CSSJ Federation Leadership Development Program, “Leaders as Leaven,” in Albany, New York, and through participation in the Facilitation Workshop and Mentoring Program in St. Louis, Missouri. No stranger to the Mount, Sr. Charlene served at the Academy from 1992 to 2001 as a Theology teacher. During that time, she formed strong relationships with students, parents, faculty, alumnae, staff, friends, and benefactors. One of her favorite aspects of teaching at MSJA was the opportunity to work closely with the administration, faculty, and staff. She cites her years at the Mount as a remarkably formative time, where she grew both personally and professionally. Following her experience at the Mount, Sr. Charlene assumed a number of administrative leadership and management positions in various national and local organizations. Most recently, Sr. Charlene has served as director of the Collaborative Leadership Development Program, a shared initiative for young women religious with leadership potential from religious congregations around the country. Through the program, participants are called to identify their strengths, weaknesses, and skills in an effort to be better prepared to take on future leadership roles. “My favorite part about the program is the collaborative aspect,” said Sr. Charlene. “Relationships make all the difference. I loved the diversity of the participants and the depth and contemplative nature of the program.” One of the best pieces of advice she shared with the future leaders was to follow and engage what would be the best version of themselves. 12

Winter 2020

Although Sr. Charlene loved her time at the Mount, she was not actively looking to return. She had left the Mount to serve as a vocation director for the Congregation and feels as though God’s work brought her back to the Academy. “For me, it was a call,” she says. “God had my attention.”

Sr. Mary Lynch, Sr. Charlene Diorka and Sr. Kathleen Brabson on senior retreat in the late 1990s

She first learned that Carney Sandoe & Associates were embarking on a national search to fill the role of president in June of last year when they called her. She said she thought about applying, and did so for two full months, discerning whether this was the right next step for her. She sought clarity by praying to her close friend Sr. Kathleen Brabson, asking for guidance while pondering the Mount’s legacy and the mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Ultimately, she said it felt right to add her name to the pool of candidates, and heard Sr. Kathleen say, “We can do this together.” “Just about everything I’ve done in my life has led me here,” Sr. Charlene said. Given her past experience and leadership development role with the SSJs, Sr. Charlene feels that she is in a prime position to realize her vision at the Mount. She notes a strength as being able to imagine what is possible and making it happen. Her ability to see the big picture while maintaining an attention to detail will play a crucial part in her new role; and, combined with her passion, it has the potential to yield authentic and significant results.

Part of Sr. Charlene’s focus will be on cultivating and enhancing a diverse, inclusive community. She also is eager to hear feedback from students and to work alongside them on facilitating a welcoming and productive community environment.

My experience with leadership development has taught me the significance of serving, being an agent of transformation, working collaboratively, and being globally responsible.”

“Fostering a culture of inclusivity starts with enrollment,” Sr. Charlene says. “Taking a good look at how we attract, invite, maintain, and immerse a diverse student body will be crucial to the Mount’s growth.” Through her passion, energy, and enthusiasm for the mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph and the Mount, Sr. Charlene hopes to continue to move the Academy forward to benefit current and future students and the entire Mount community.

“My experience with leadership development has taught me the significance of serving, being an agent of transformation, working collaboratively, and being globally responsible. I look forward to working with all members of the Mount community to facilitate the type of school that we’d like to be.” mount saint joseph academy

Your Mount Fund in Action

On any given day, as you walk down the hallways of the Mount, you see the Mount Fund in action. You see it in the science classrooms as the girls are looking through microscopes, using beakers and test tubes, or building bridges to put the principles of physics to the test. You see it in the art classrooms as students are using supplies to learn to paint, sculpt, and create through technology using graphic design programs and 3-D printers. You see students in the library using online resources, and also working collaboratively in soft spaces and the recently remodeled Fontbonne…all made possible through the Mount Fund. After school, as they put their equipment on for practice or a game, or head into the auditorium to rehearse for a show or concert, or as they work in the robotics lab, Innovation Center, or attend a club meeting, that is the Mount Fund in action. And of course, the Mount Fund is also part of the financial aid that is awarded to over 30% of our students so that a Mount education is attainable regardless of socio-economic background. Is it then any wonder why this fund is so vital to the Academy and the students? Tuition, even “full” tuition, covers only 80% of what it costs to send a student to the Mount. This is so we can keep tuition costs down. It is the Mount Fund that helps make up that 20% gap, and it is the generosity of alumnae, parents, alumnae parents, grandparents, friends, faculty, and yes, even the students themselves that makes the Mount Fund possible. Our goal this year is $625,000. We need your help to make this happen. If you have already given to the Mount Fund this year, thank you! If you have yet to make your gift, please go to www.msjacad.org/giving to make your gift today. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference! The Mount would not be the same without the Mount Fund, and the fund would not be successful without you. Consider making your gift today so the girls can put it into action every day.

letter from the Alumnae Board President

Happy New Year! It’s amazing to see how much has happened since the start of the school year. In October, the Alumnae Board welcomed new leadership, several new members, and four new committees: Technology, Diversity & Inclusion, Engagement, and a Class Agent Task Force. These new committees are chaired by talented and passionate alumnae excited to make a difference in the Mount alumnae community, but we need your help! If you are interested in supporting these efforts or just learning more about our plans, please reach out to me. And, as usual, the fall schedule was packed with alumnae events. In September, we had record high alumnae participation at the Mount Golf Classic. October brought Mount Runway, the annual fashion show, with clothing provided by the boutique ellelauri, owned by Liz Rymar ’00, and The Cashmere Sale. More than 320 attended and took chances on some pretty exciting tombola prizes. They watched alumnae, students, senior moms, faculty, and even Sister Mary Dacey model the latest fashions on the runway. On December 7th, our popular alumnae event Breakfast with Santa drew a record high attendance of more than 425 people--the largest Breakfast with Santa to date! We are all happy to welcome Sister Charlene Diorka back to the Mount community as our new President this July. Although I did not have the opportunity to be a student in one of Sister Charlene’s classes during my time at the Mount, I had many friends who did, and they all remember her as thoughtful, strong, talented, and passionate about her work. I am excited to see what Sister Charlene will bring when she returns to the Mount community. Thank you to all of the new and returning Alumnae Board members who have worked hard to create great and meaningful experiences for all current (and future) alumnae! And thank you to the entire Mount community for attending and supporting these important events. I wish you all a warm and wonderful 2020! Laura Dolan Remaker ’00

Reminiscent of the lace so closely connected to the founding SSJs, the sisterhood of the Mount is also “laced in legacy.” The strong bonds of sisterhood were evident at the 20th annual Golden Girls Luncheon at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill. The Mount community is proud of the sisterhood abundant throughout the alumnae community, particularly in alumnae who have been friends for 50 years or longer!
